Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury takes out full-page ad thanking students for attendance and asking for more
Kliff Kingsbury, college football’s hippest and coolest coach, took an ad out in the Daily Toreador, the student newspaper, thanking students for their attendance last year and encouraging them to come to games this year.
Coach Kingsbury took out a full page ad in the @DailyToreador for 1st day of class today with this message #WreckEm http://ift.tt/1t7tQTz
— Eric Ward (@EricWard_7) August 25, 2014
Here’s the text of the ad:
Raider Nation, thank you for the incredible support you showed last season. Together we shattered the record for highest student attendance at over 11,000 students per game. This year it’s time to get live and fill all 12,577 student seats every game and show the world why ESPN named you the best student section in the Big 12. Every game will be packed, so get there early, stay late and let’s get rowdy! It all starts this Saturday night at 6 p.m. in the Jones. Guns Up!”
The ad also includes Kingsbury’s signature ad his photo.
Support for Texas Tech is at an all-time high. The school has already sold out its season ticket allotment and just 3,000 tickets remain for the season opener against Central Arkansas (yes, Central Arkansas).
In a time when student attendance is waning at many schools, including Alabama and Florida, Tech students seem to be rallying around the energy of their young second-year coach and it’s paying dividends for the program. Kingsbury creates a measure of pride for the students by citing the records it set last season.
Perhaps more coaches should take out ads in the student paper telling their students how awesome they are.

Arizona to start freshman QB Solomon vs. UNLV
Arizona names Anu Solomon starting quarterback
The four-man quarterbacking race at Arizona has ended and the youngest competitor has come out on top.
Coach Rich Rodriguez announced Monday that redshirt freshman Anu Solomon would start Friday night’s season opener against UNLV.
Solomon beat out USC transfer Jesse Scroggins, LSU transfer Jerrard Randall and Texas transfer Connor Brewer.
The decision didn’t come as much of a surprise as Solomon was getting the bulk of the reps with the first team this fall. Solomon emerged after Scroggins, who was ahead in the spring, was in a car accident and missed extensive time in the offseason.
Even though Solomon is the announced starter, Rodriguez said he might play more than one quarterback against UNLV.
If Solomon can hold on to the starting spot, he’ll be the first non-senior to start at quarterback during Rodriguez’s tenure at Arizona. Senior Matt Scott started in 2012 and senior B.J. Denker was the starter last season.
Solomon, who was a four-star recruit and second-best dual-threat quarterback in the nation in 2013, according to Rivals.com, went 57-3 as a four-year starter at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. He threw for 10,112 yards and 138 touchdowns with just 17 interceptions.

19 Things You Can Expect Your First Semester Of College
Paralyzed former Tulane player Devon Walker makes first trip to the stadium where he was injured
Former Tulane football player Devon Walker will make his first appearance at Tulsa's H.A. Chapman Stadium since suffering an injury two years ago that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
Walker will attend the game between Tulsa and Tulane and will be recognized on the field at halftime along with his mother, Inez, and various medical personnel, a TU spokesman said. The video boards will play a thank-you message from Walker to athletic trainers from both schools, the EMTs who responded to the call and the staff at St. Francis Hospital who treated him for 10 days.
On Sept. 8, 2012, Walker injured his C3 and C4 vertebrae when he collided with a teammate while trying to make a tackle during the final play of the first half. Walker was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he underwent a three-hour surgery to stabilize his spine.
After an extensive rehabilitation, Walker resumed his schoolwork at Tulane in August 2013 and graduated last year with a degree in cell and molecular biology. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints and is listed in the media guide as reserve/retired.
He recently accepted a position to advise for the College Football Assistance Fund, which provides resources and financial assistance to players who have suffered severe injuries while playing college football.
Walker just began work on his master’s degree.
"I think it's nothing short of amazing what Devon has done to date in dealing with the injury, the paralysis, and moving forward with his life and being an example and an inspiration for his team and for people with spinal cord injuries," Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship told the Tulsa World. "It's still very surreal looking back. ... It is not lost on us that this is the first time we will have played Tulane in our stadium since that happened."

Charlie Strong puts the Longhorn logo back on Texas' helmets
At the beginning of fall camp, Texas coach Charlie Strong stripped the Longhorns logos from the team helmets, telling players they would have to earn them back.
On Saturday, Strong informed his team that he thought the Longhorn should be restored.
"I told them on Saturday I think they earned the right to get the decal back on their helmet," Strong said. "They earned the right to raise the horns. When I said it in practice, they started screaming 'oh, we can do that. We finally can do that.' It's something they worked for now to earn that right just because of their hard work, but they deserve it.”
Strong also took away the charter bus that drove players to practice and roped off the Longhorn on the floor of the locker room so players couldn’t step on it. Strong has no plans to bring back the buses, but he has softened on the locker room logo.
"In the locker room, the only time I will ever remove the rope from around is on game day because when we stand on game day, that's what we're playing for," Strong said. "We're playing for one another, pride and what it means. I'm going to remove it only on game day, but they can raise the horns now, they'll have it on their helmet, the decal. Other than that, in the locker room, it stays the same."
Strong came into the Texas job with a no-nonsense approach and has held firm to it. He taken away privileges, dismissed players and called out guys who aren’t doing the right thing. It's been difficult for some players to adjust, but if he said the players earned their logo back that must mean what he’s instilling is finally taking root.
We’ll see if it pays dividends on the field when the team opens the season against North Texas on Saturday.

Ohio State QB Braxton Miller to have surgery Tuesday, named team captain
Braxton Miller won’t be on the field for Ohio State this season, but coach Urban Meyer is making sure he’s not left out of the Buckeyes' 2014 campaign.
Miller, who is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday for a torn labrum in his right throwing shoulder, has been named a team captain and will travel with the team.
"Braxton Miller was the high vote-getter," Meyer said. "He's down getting surgery. He met with the doctor, I got a text this morning that he met with Dr. Andrews today. Surgery is set for tomorrow.
"He'll be one of the 70 (on the travel roster this season) if he can go. He won't be able to go this time, but there will be times where we'll have to make that decision."
Miller suffered the season-ending injury during practice last week. An MRI revealed a torn labrum to his shoulder that had been surgically repaired in February.
Renowned physician Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery.
It’s a great gesture by Meyer to continue to include Miller with the 2014 team. He’s been a leader for the program during his three seasons as starter and no doubt will continue to do so. Also, having him on the sidelines to provide tutelage to new starting quarterback J.T. Barrett, who will take his first collegiate snaps against Navy on Saturday, will be helpful as well.

VOD: The Singing Hog Lady returns and wants Arkansas to know 'The Heat Is On'
Arkansas’ favorite super fan Liz Honey is back with a new song just in time for the season to kick off this week.
Honey, who is affectionately known as the “Singing Hog Lady,” has her nose taped up and is ready to Woo Pig Sooie with her Arkansas-themed rendition of Glenn Frey’s “The Heat Is On.”
Last season, Liz Honey, whose actual name is Liz McDaniel, provided entertainment for college football fans all over the country as she tried to spur on the Razorbacks with her Arkansas-infused versions of songs that were popular like 30 years ago.
McDaniel, a city clerk treasurer in Nashville, Ark., gained a lot of attention for her work but as Arkansas started to struggle, she faded into the ether perhaps thinking she was the cause for the team’s woes.
So, we’re super excited that she’s come back for a new season with a new attitude and, apparently, new(ish) music.
So, here’s hoping the Singing Hog Lady can change the Razorbacks’ fortunes so we’re treated to a new serenade every week.
Thanks to College Spun

Louisville WR Devante Parker needs foot surgery, could miss half the season
Louisville will be without its top receiving target for the first half of the season.
Coach Bobby Petrino announced Monday that senior wide receiver Devante Parker would miss 6-8 weeks with a broken left small toe.
Petrino said Parker broke the fifth metatarsal and will undergo surgery later Monday.
"He's such a calm guy, you wouldn't know that it really bothers him that much, and obviously it does," Petrino said of Parker. "He's a great competitor and a great player. He took it better than I probably did."
Parker suffered the injury during Friday night’s practice and went to Charlotte, N.C. for further evaluation from orthopedist Bob Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist.
Parker was Louisville's leading receiver last season with 55 catches for 885 yards and a school-record 12 touchdowns. He was supposed to make the transition from former quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to Will Gardner an easy one, but his departure leaves a major void in the Cardinals’ receiving corps.
Kai De La Cruz,, who had 15 catches for 271 yards last year, is listed as Parker’s top backup. Eli Rogers and James Quick are the other two starting receivers for the season opener against Miami on Sept. 1.

Alabama lists QBs Jacob Coker and Blake Sims as co-starters for season opener
Those hoping Alabama’s recently released depth chart for the season opener against West Virginia would provide some clarity regarding the quarterback situation were disappointed Monday.
Coach Nick Saban listed Jacob Coker and Blake Sims, the two frontrunners in the quarterbacking derby, as co-starters on the depth chart and said both would continue to take reps with the first team this week.
"We're going to continue to rep both guys," Saban said. "We feel like both guys have been doing a very, very good job. Obviously somebody has to start the game. We'll make that decision probably at some point in time this week.
"I think both guys are doing a good job right now. We're going to continue to try to develop both of those players at this point."
While this might be a game-time decision, Saban and offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin have to have a favorite going into the season opener. Coker is a transfer from Florida State and was hyped by former coach Jimbo Fisher as the best quarterback Saban will have coached at Alabama. Sims has been overshadowed, but Saban has been quick to make sure no one forgets about Sims and that he has a chance to become the starter as well.
According to tweets from media, Saban noted that whoever starts against West Virginia might not finish the game.
"You've got a starting pitcher, doesn't necessarily mean he is going to go nine innings," Saban said.
And we all know the old adage about having two quarterbacks; if you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks.

Oklahoma names Blake Bell starter at tight end, not listed on QB depth
For those worrying that Oklahoma’s quarterback situation might be up in the air after reports surfaced that Blake Bell was taking snaps can now rest easy.

More importantly, Bell isn’t listed on the quarterback depth chart. Cody Thomas is the backup and Justice Hansen is third string.
Full offensive depth chart for Saturday: http://ift.tt/1AO0sTo
— Oklahoma Football (@OU_Football) August 25, 2014
There was some concern about the quarterbacking position last week when Oklahoman reporter Jason Kersey reported that Bell, who competed with Knight for the starting quarterback role last season, was “splitting some of his time this week in practice.” Kersey noted those reps had been limited and against the Sooners’ second-team defense.
Kersey also reported that Thomas, who Stoops had said all along was the No. 2 quarterback, had an undisclosed injury, but that the injury wasn’t believed to be serious.
Bell made eight starts at quarterback last season before Knight eventually took hold of the position. Bell had spent the past two seasons as a quarterback, but made the transition to tight end in the spring. Obviously, the move to tight end was a good one as he’s earned the start at least for the opening game of the season.

Southern Arkansas WR Brandon Hobdy killed in a drive-by Sunday morning
Southern Arkansas wide receiver Brandon Hobdy was fatally shot early Sunday morning after being struck by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting.
According to Little Rock TV station KTHV, Hobdy and former Southern Arkansas student Wayne Payton, who also was fatally shot, were outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars building on campus when a car carrying people who had been removed from the building after causing a disturbance started firing shots into the crowd.
Police said both Hobdy, 23, and Payton, 24, were innocent bystanders.
The University said the event the men were attending was not affiliated with the university.
A candlelight vigil was held on campus Sunday evening.
Hobdy played in nine games for the Muleriders, all last season, and had nine catches for 108 yards. He was a transfer from Bakersfield College in Bakersfield, Calif.
"Everyone at Southern Arkansas is deeply saddened by this tragic news,” Southern Arkansas athletic director Steve Browning said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Hobdy family in particular and to all those that are affected by this tragedy."
Police have not made any arrests.

Arkansas starting quarterback Brandon Allen woke up Monday morning to find his truck on fire in what police are investigating as an arson case.

Allen said he wwoke up to the sound of the alarm on his Chevy Avalanche going off. He saw the car ablaze and called the police. Allen said the truck was a gift from his father and his golf clubs were in it.
Allen, who was named the starter earlier this fall, played the bulk of last season with a separated AC joint in his shoulder and completed just 49.6 percent of his passes for 1,552 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2013.

West Virgina suspends CB Ickey Banks three games
West Virginia will be without cornerback Ickey Banks for the first three games of the season, according to coach Dana Holgorsen.
Banks had an academic eligibility issue in mid-August that forced him out of fall camp. Holgorsen said the NCAA had cleared Banks, but that the team imposed the suspension.
Banks started 12 games last season and had 32 tackles and two interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown. Banks was one of two defensive returners that started every game last season.
This isn’t great news for a defense that allowed 33.3 points per game and ranked 97th in the country in defensive pass efficiency especially when the Mountaineers open the season against Alabama. Banks also will miss games against Towson and Maryland. Sophomore Daryl Worley already locked down one cornerback position and Terrell Chestnut and Travis Bell were competing to replace Banks.

Louisville names Will Gardner starting quarterback
In a surprise to pretty much no one, Louisville coach Bobby Petrino named Will Gardner the Cardinals’ starting quarterback.
Gardner, a redshirt sophomore, backed up Teddy Bridgewater last season and was the favorite despite the fact that Petrino said it was an open competition.
Gardner had a strong spring and an even better fall camp to earn the starting nod.
"I thought Will and outstanding fall camp," Petrino said. "He demonstrated good decision-making and executed our offense."
Gardner appeared in six games last season as a redshirt freshman. He completed 8-of-12 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns. He was always considered the quarterback-in-waiting for when Bridgewater moved on. Bridgewater was a first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in this year’s NFL draft.

Watch the 7-year-old daughter of Penn State coach James Franklin hit the blocking sled like a champ (Video)
It’s game week and there’s no better way to get ready for the start of the college football season than to watch the daughter of Penn State coach James Franklin hit the blocking sled and yell, “We are… Penn State!”
Franklin posted the video to Twitter on Sunday and called watching his 7-year-old daughter Shola hitting the sleds like a champion a “proud dad moment.”

Maybe some of that intensity will rub off on some of Penn State’s players this week as they make the long trek to Dublin, Ireland to play Central Florida. Dish Network customers could miss college football games on FS1 this season
Looking forward to watching Rutgers-Washington State this opening weekend? How about Colorado-Colorado State or North Dakota State and Iowa State? Perhaps you’re a fan of SMU or Baylor? Well, if you have Dish Network, you’re not going to get these games.
Sorry.
According to the website dishsportsvalue.com, the television provider is in a dispute with Fox Sports 1 and the price it’s charging to show college football games this season. As a result, Dish Network says it won’t be showing any college football games on FS1 until the dispute is resolved, which could take all season.
Unfortunately, you're visiting this website because a FOX Sports 1 event is not available on DISH. FOX agreed to pay an inflated price for certain sports events on FOX Sports 1. Now, FOX is demanding we pay them a significant additional charge to carry these events. We are unwilling to pass these costs on to our customers.
The site goes on to note that it won’t be able to show the games I mentioned above, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. If the dispute continues, Dish Network will miss a handful of Pac-12 and Big 12 games.
Of course, when Dish Network subscribers from the College Football-loving world got wind of this, Dish Network’s Twitter feed @dish_answers went into damage control mode.

This is truly a strange situation and it’s weird that no other provider is noting similar issues with FS1 or at least not going to battle over it. My monthly DirecTV bill might have gone up, but not so much that it’s been noticeable. And honestly, if that gets me the games on FS1 (because I don’t get Pac-12 Network) then I’m OK with it.
Not sure how many customers Dish Network is actually going to lose over this because it is a small amount of games that aren’t available, but if it continues to press on, especially as important games within the Big 12 and Pac-12 begin, things might get ugly.
What say you, Dish Network customers?
