Georgia DB Rico Johnson's career is over because of neurological condition

Georgia announced Thursday that DB Rico Johnson would be put on a medical scholarship and his football career was over.

The school said Johnson "experienced some neurological symptoms" at practice on Wednesday and doctors discovered a neurological condition when he was looked at afterwards.

"While we are very disappointed for Rico from a football standpoint, we feel extremely fortunate that he is healthy and that we were able to diagnose his condition and protect him from a possible catastrophic injury," Ron Courson, Georgia's Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, said in a statement. "Although he cannot continue his football career, he should be able to have a normal life."

Johnson has played in every game this season and primarily on special teams. He has five total tackles this year and a forced fumble. Earlier Thursday he tweeted the following:

Why this gotta happen to me??

— Rico Johnson (@Ric_johnson7) October 2, 2014

“I’m thankful we caught this condition when we did,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “Now we can help Rico transition to life after football. He will stay on scholarship through his graduation and we will assist him in finding employment through the P.O. Network.”

Johnson was a three-star recruit in the class of 2013 and played at a prep school that season before going to Georgia. According to UGASports.com, Brendan Langley, a sophomore WR, saw time at CB in practice Wednesday and could move back. He was a CB before he was moved to WR in spring practice.

Michigan AD Dave Brandon absolves coach Brady Hoke of wrongdoing in handling of QB Shane Morris

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon has absolved coach Brady Hoke of any wrongdoing in regards to the handling of quarterback Shane Morris, who suffered both a leg and head injury during the game.

Brandon, who was doing one of his first media interviews since last Saturday’s game, told the Detroit Free Press that the responsibility of diagnosing Morris with any injury that would have prohibited him from staying in the game should have come from the medical training staff.

"I don't think Brady deserves any blame for what happened on the sidelines," Brandon said. "Because Brady is responsible for coaching.

"Our medical staff, which incorporates all of our trainers, our physicians -- it's a rather large complement of people down there -- their job is to notify the coaches if a situation occurs where either somebody needs to come off the field or somebody cannot go back on the field."

Morris took a helmet-to-helmet hit during the fourth quarter against Minnesota and emerged wobbly. He has already been hampered by a leg injury. Despite teammates asking for the training staff to come onto the field and look at Morris, Morris waived them off and he stay in the game one more play before coming off the field. A few plays later, after backup Devin Gardner lost his helmet on an out-of-bounds play, Morris returned to the game to take a handoff.

Morris was later diagnosed with symptoms consistent with a concussion.

When Brandon was asked whether what happened with Morris would affect Hoke’s job status Brandon replied: "No. I just said the problem on the sideline Saturday had nothing to do with the coaches."

Hoke has faced staunch criticism in the past week for the way Morris’ injury was handled but he’s been consistent in saying that he was not responsible for deciding whether Morris should have remained on the field. However, when Morris collapsed into the arms of his offensive lineman, a moment that was caught on camera, someone on the sideline should have had the common sense to pull Morris out of the game despite his insistence that he stay in.

In response to the handling of Morris’ injuries, Michigan announced Thursday that it was putting a member of the athletic training staff in the press box to better spot injuries. The athletic training staff also will use two-way radios to communicate with each other rather than hand signals. The medical staff also will secure the helmets of any player that is deemed unfit to return to the game — a practice most programs have been employing for several years.

Brandon told the Free Press that it was an internal communication error that led to the mishandling of Morris injuries.

"Part of the problem here that we own, that we're apologizing for is a lack of internal communication," Brandon said. "That's part of the problem. There's a lot of voices, a lot of moving parts, a lot of people involved, a lot of people who had opinions and perspectives on what happened and we did a horrible job of gathering all that together and getting everybody on the same page. That's one of the things we have to apologize for, own up to and fix."

Charges dropped against former UNC tutor Jennifer Wiley Thompson

The Orange County District Attorney has dropped charges against Jennifer Wiley Thompson, the tutor at the heart of the academic misconduct case against North Carolina.

Thompson, who is cited as Jennifer Wiley in court documents, was one of five people accused of violating the state's agent-athlete inducement law by providing money and gifts to former North Carolina football player Greg Little.

"After looking at the facts and sitting down with Ms. Thompson, (district attorney) Mr. (Jim) Woodall determined that the cases against her should be dismissed. Ms. Thompson committed no crime at any time and we commend Mr. Woodall for doing the right thing and dismissing these cases," Joe Cheshire, Thompson's attorney, said in a statement. "Ms. Thompson has suffered too much over the last four years and hopefully can now begin to put all of this behind her."

Initially, Thompson faced four felony charges, including purchasing a round-trip airline ticket for Little in May 2010 and delivering packages to Little containing $2,000 and $150 cash. Investigators claimed Thompson was trying to persuade Little to join sports agent Terry Watson of the Georgia-based Watson Sports Agency.

Thompson’s lawyer claimed that Thompson was a naïve college student who was just trying to help out the players she tutored.

During an investigation, the Secretary of State’s office learned through Thompson’s phone records that she had extensive contact with UNC student athletes as well as sports agent Peter Schaffer.

Each one of Thompson’s felony charges carried a maximum penalty of 15 months in jail.

Thompson was banned from helping student-athletes, having contact with them and was not allowed to enter any UNC athletic facilities.

Watson still faces 14 felony counts — 13 for athlete-agent inducement and one for obstructing justice. Patrick Jones, a Georgia-based real estate agent and longtime associated of Watson, is accused of providing money to former North Carolina player Robert Quinn through a third party and former North Carolina Central quarterback Michael Wayne Johnson Jr., is facing a charge of arranging a meeting between Watson and Little and providing a mailing address for Watson to send cash to Little.

Michigan AD Dave Brandon says he has not considered firing head coach Brady Hoke

Despite the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the handling of quarterback Shane Morris’ concussion, Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said he has not considered firing head coach Brady Hoke, nor has he considered resigning.

Brandon, in an interview with The Michigan Daily, did admit to mistakes made by the athletic department when Morris was left in the game for another play after being hit hard in the helmet.

Hoke, who defended Brandon Thursday, maintained that he and other medical personnel did not see the hit on Morris and said Monday afternoon that he thought Morris was removed from the game because of an ankle injury. Brandon said he does not know how Hoke learned of Morris’ concussion.

“That was just another example of the failure of communication that took place between the doctors, all of the trainers – in this case, the head coach – to try to piece together what happened,” Brandon said.

Brandon said he spent Sunday “getting further acquainted to what happened on the sidelines,” but did so without Hoke. He then gathered further information about what happened on the sideline Saturday afternoon throughout the day on Monday, leading to the statement released early Tuesday morning acknowledging "a serious lack of communication."

“The appropriate person in athletics — and I judged that to be me — needed to make it very clear that a mistake was made,” Brandon said. “We own it, we recognize and we acknowledge that a mistake was made, we apologize for it — and I did — and we immediately committed that we would learn from it and make changes to ensure that it wouldn’t happen again.”

As he did in Tuesday morning’s statement, Brandon detailed new protocols that will change moving forward. That includes having a medical professional in the press box that will have access to monitor injuries on television broadcasts as well as in real time.

More than 10,000 people have signed a student-run petition calling for Brandon to lose his job. Additionally, students led a protest Tuesday calling for university president Mark Schlissel to fire Hoke and remove Brandon from his position.

Brandon said the student protest was “hurtful.”

“That’s very hurtful,” Brandon said. “Anybody who thinks that they want groups to gather with the topic being criticism and sometimes very personal attacks on the work and the job. It’s hurtful. It’s hurtful to me, it’s hurtful to my family. I’m not tone-deaf. I felt very badly. My job and my personality is to the best of my ability, I have to fix that.”

Brandon, who played football for the Wolverines in the 1970s, hopes to mend the relationship with the student body by making more public appearances. And above all else, he does not want the focus to move away from Michigan’s student-athletes.

“Michigan athletics cannot be successful without the community embracing this work, caring about student-athletes and caring about coaches, and supporting the work they do.” Brandon said. “I’m just hopeful that with the controversy, personal attacks, and demonstrations aside, we stay focused on the real purpose and mission of the Athletic Department and the young people we care about.”

Ohio State TE Jeff Heuerman on Maryland: 'We're going to show them what Big Ten football is'

Maryland will play its first home game as a member of the Big Ten when Ohio State visits College Park Saturday afternoon. Buckeyes tight end Jeff Heuerman wants to make sure the Terrapins’ home conference debut does not go very well.

“We’re going to go there and we’re going to welcome them to the Big Ten,” Heuerman said per Cleveland.com. “We’re going to go on the road and it’s going to be a big game and we’re going to show them what Big Ten football is and hopefully it’ll come out in our favor.”

Cleveland.com’s Doug Lesmerises said Heuerman’s comments “sounded maybe 65 percent neighborly” and “35 percent like a warning.”

Maryland knocked off Indiana 37-15 on the road in its first Big Ten game over the weekend. The win improved the Terps to 4-1 on the season, putting them at the top of the Big Ten East Division.

Saturday’s game is the first conference matchup of the year for the 3-1 Buckeyes, who are coming off a dominant 50-28 win over Cincinnati. With the added importance of conference play, Heuerman said the Buckeyes will pick up the intensity.

“We’ll show you what’s up,” Heurman said. “They’re saying it’s one of the biggest games in Maryland history. Whatever that means.”

With the Big Ten down as a whole this season, the East division is wide open. The Terps and Buckeyes have a good shot as anyone to represent the East in the Big Ten Championship game, especially with fellow East division squad Michigan State hosting a tough Nebraska squad. If Michigan State loses, the winner of the OSU-Maryland game will jump to the top of the division standings.

Florida LB Jarrad Davis is not impressed with Tennessee freshman RB Jalen Hurd

Tennessee true freshman running back Jalen Hurd leads the Vols with 328 yards on 72 carries through four games. Despite the solid 4.6 yards per rush average and a career high 119 yards in his SEC debut over the weekend against Georgia, Florida sophomore linebacker Jarrad Davis is not impressed.

"He's physical. He's fast, but he doesn't have top-end speed," Davis said of the 6-foot-3, 221-pound Hurd. "We have to come downhill, we have to hit him early. We have to let him know what it is and we have to welcome him to the SEC."

Heading into Saturday’s matchup between the 2-2 Vols and 2-1 Gators at Neyland Stadium, Davis says Hurd has not seen a defense as good as Florida’s.

“Georgia was a big test for him, that's a physical team,” Davis said. “But I feel like we have more to offer for him. We're going to come down, we're going to talk to him a little bit with the pads. We're not going to talk with our mouth, we're going to hit him and get back and get lined up. I don't think he can hang with us. He's a good athlete, but we've got a whole defense coming for him.”

Florida gave up 672 yards of total offense in its last game against Alabama, so its defense still has a lot to prove in order to back up Davis’ boasts – stopping Hurd will be a big part of that.

In contrast to Davis, Gators defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin offered praise for the freshman.

"I just think he's gaining more and more confidence each game. I think their coaching staff is gaining more confidence in him each game. I think he's getting more carries and playing more as they go,” Durkin said. “I don't think he's a freshman anymore. I think he's a guy that's got good playing experience now. He's playing within their scheme and doing well.”

Hurd was a five-star recruit from Hendersonville, Tennessee, and was a huge in-state pull for Vols head coach Butch Jones. He’s already have a big impact for a rebuilding Tennessee program and Durkin knows containing him will be a challenge.

"He's not a guy you can go hit and butt down. He's not going to go down," Durkin said. "You've got to hit him, wrap him up and tackle and get more guys to the ball.”

Michigan coach Brady Hoke defends AD Dave Brandon, but is still passing the buck on Shane Morris

The narrative Michigan coach Brady Hoke has been peddling all week didn’t change much during his weekly Thursday morning appearance on the "Stoney and Bill Show," but he did want to make one thing clear — he’s running Michigan football, not athletic director Dave Brandon.

According to the Detroit News, the hosts of the show asked Hoke about the calls to fire Brandon in light of the situation with quarterback Shane Morris. Morris played in two plays after suffering what Michigan has called a mild concussion.

"I think it's funny people think Dave's making all the decisions in the football program," Hoke told the radio station. "No, Dave and I are very, very close, and we have a great relationship that's built from respect, trust and character.

"We value the leadership that both of us have and the responsibilities that we have and we understand the demands and the expectations that we both have when it comes to Michigan football.

"It's all nonsense. If you're sitting in my seat you would see it and you would probably laugh about it a little bit. People think Dave made the change when we hired (offensive coordinator) Doug Nussmeier, so he's running the program. It is just amazing to me the criticism that he's gotten when it comes to this whole deal."

Hoke reiterated that it’s up to the medical staff to decide whether Morris should have been taken out of the game or gone back in. This is a claim Hoke has stuck to despite arguments that anyone looking at Morris should have seen he was in pain from both the hit to the head and a leg injury he sustained earlier in the game and that he should have been pulled out as a matter of common sense.

Hoke also said he tried to call a timeout when Gardner’s helmet came off, but that officials wouldn’t let him.

You're on the field, you're coaching football. You're at it, you're making adjustments, you're doing everything you can,” Hoke said. “When Devin's helmet came off I tried to buy him back in the game with a timeout and was told I couldn't, which was wrong. I was told for about an eight to nine second spot there I couldn't until another official corrected the head referee. By that time Shane was on the field."

Hoke also explained why third-string quarterback Russell Bellomy didn’t come into the game instead of Morris. When Gardner had to come out of the game, cameras went to Bellomy, who was searching for his helmet. Bellomy tried on two different helmets and neither appeared to be his. By the time it was all sorted out, Morris was already on the field.

"Here's what you guys don't know because you're not on the sideline: You always have the second's (backup's) helmet, so whoever the second is, you have their helmet -- someone has it,” Hoke said. “You usually don't have the third. That's usually on the bench somewhere. So when you talk about confusion and all that, that's where that came from and it all stemmed from buying a guy back in and not being able to buy him back in. (So) 99 percent of the people don't know unless you've been on the sideline."

Hoke defended starting Morris over Gardner against Minnesota by saying Morris had earned the spot and that Gardner needed to sit and reflect. But, as Hoke has said at times already this week, he feels bad for Morris, who has now, unintentionally, become the center of controversy.

“I feel bad for Shane. I feel bad (for) his family — there are reporters at their front door, there's people calling him, because that's what the media does,” Hoke said. “I feel bad for him. As far as an attitude and a teammate, he's awesome."

At the end of the interview, one of the hosts made a comment about the offense being worse under first-year offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier than it was under fired coordinator Al Borges.

"Well, that's an opinion," Hoke said.

"It's kind of fact too, actually, as far as statistics," host Mike Stone said.

"Statistically, yeah," Hoke said.

Overall, Hoke is trying to keep a positive attitude in the face of what is a dismal situation. Few people believe Hoke will be retained at the end of the season and many think he’ll be fired before the season ends. But Hoke said he’s trying to block that out and focus on coaching.

"I'm doing fine. When you're in a position of leadership, there's always criticism. That's part of it,” Hoke said. “I do think from the football side of it and getting ready for Rutgers it's been a very good week, how the guys have competed. They've got a little bit of an attitude to them, which I think will carry over to Saturday, and it's been fun to be with the kids. Because at the end of the day, and I've said it 100 times, that's why I got into coaching, is to be with these kids. The rest of the stuff is what it is. The good thing is about being at Michigan, you don't hide from it. You fix it when things aren't going right or there's an issue that comes up. We're going to fix it from the president on down."

Bo Wallace says Alabama media are 'like fans of Bama'

Before last year's game against Alabama, Ole Miss QB Bo Wallace said his team could put points on Alabama (or anyone for that matter) and the matchup between the Rebels and Crimson Tide would be a close game.

He also said the week before the game that his team had better receivers outside than Texas A&M, a team that had fallen 49-42 to Alabama two weeks before.

Wallace's words were not prescient. Alabama shut out Ole Miss 25-0 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on September 28. Wallace finished 17-31 passing for 159 yards.

His comments got a lot of attention, both before and after the game. Wallace remembers the attention.

"I was just showing confidence in our players," Wallace told CBS Sports. "They just turned it around as much as they could. Their media is like fans of Bama."

It's not just an Alabama phenomenon; local media across the country can have a tendency to lean to the team it primarily covers. But you can bet that it'll be chuckled at heartily in newsrooms across the state even if there may be a semblance of truth for some.

When previewing this year's game during his media availabilty this week, Wallace made no statements resembling last years' when he was asked about the shellacking. Saturday's game is much bigger game for the Rebels' than last year's was. With a home win, Ole Miss would vault into the conversation for not only the SEC West title but the College Football Playoff as well.

"I just think we’re a different offense than we were last year,” Wallace said. “I think that our guys have matured. Our young guys, that was one of their first big tests, going into Bama and having to play them. So those guys have matured and are making great plays and we’re getting the run game together at the right time. Had a real good rushing game last week so we’re just going to go out and play ball and see what happens."

Kentucky players suspended for shooting BB guns on campus formally charged

The four Kentucky players who were suspended for shooting BB guns on campus Sunday night have been formally charged in Fayette County (KY) District Court, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Quarterback Drew Barker, wide receiver Dorian Baker, defensive end Tymere Dubose and running back Stanley Williams, all freshmen, were charged Thursday morning with second-degree disorderly conduct after surveillance footage captured them during a campus alert of shots fired near a dorm complex. The charge is a class B misdemeanor and is punishable by up to 90 days in jail.

Court documents said the players had “up to four pellet or BB guns,” one of which they discarded. The players told police they were playing “man hunt” on UK’s campus Sunday night. The reports of shots fired were issued around 10 p.m. Sunday. Police searched the area, but no suspects were found. Per the Herald-Leader, an airsoft gun was recovered in the area where shots were reported. Later on, surveillance was reviewed and showed “someone discarding the gun.”

The players are due in court on October 28.

Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops suspended the players for Saturday’s game against South Carolina for a violation of team rules.

“Proper conduct is emphasized as a core value of our program,” Stoops said in a release. “If we have a situation in which someone who does not act according to our standards, we hold him accountable.”

While Dubose and Barker have not played for the Wildcats this season, Williams leads the team in all-purpose yards. Through four games, he has 101 rushing yards, 105 return yards and 75 receiving yards on five receptions. Baker had 11 catches for 122 yards and one score.

Coming off their first SEC win since November 2011, the 3-1 Wildcats host South Carolina at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Could Jimbo Fisher's opinion on JaMarcus Russell be hurting Jameis Winston's draft stock?

When JaMarcus Russell was at LSU, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher was his offensive coordinator. While it's been more than seven years since Russell was taken No. 1 overall in the 2007 NFL draft, is there a chance Fisher's opinion of Russell could hurt the evaluation of Florida State QB Jameis Winston when he enters the NFL draft?

When NFL scouts were evaluating Russell before the draft, Fisher spoke well of Russell. Given the questions that have arisen about Winston's maturity level off the field, that good opinion of Russell could raise some skepticism in the NFL about Winston.

From SI.com:

“He told the entire NFL that JaMarcus Russell was a great kid,” the person said. “He was a f------ turd then.”

Russell, of course, went on to be one of the NFL’s biggest draft busts after the Oakland Raiders took him with the first pick in 2007. The team released him after three disappointing seasons that featured dreadful play, a bad attitude and poor work ethic.

NFL personnel haven’t forgotten Fisher’s rosy endorsement of Russell. Combine that with all of Winston’s misdeeds under Fisher’s watch and whatever Fisher might say positive about his star quarterback won’t count for much.

Is it a little harsh to use what Fisher said over seven years ago against Winston? Yes. And it's no surprise that Fisher has been publicly supportive of his QB. Winston is the face of Florida State football and without him, the Seminoles may not go undefeated and win the BCS Championship Game in 2013.

But Fisher doesn't have to say the same exact things to scouts that he does on camera. Coaches will obviously proect their players to an extent, but will tend to be more open when they know the comments are private.

However, it's also way too soon to be wondering how a Fisher evaluation could affect Winston's draft stock. We don't know if Winston will declare for the 2015 NFL draft. After his game suspension for shouting an obscene gesture and then downplaying the incident to FSU officials and his shoplifting citation and other incidents, he could come back to school in 2015 to help rebuild his draft stock.

And even if Winston does go to the draft after this season, there is plenty of time for him to keep a low profile off the field. Four in-season months could change a lot of perceptions about Winston. Couple that with comments from Fisher and how Winston has changed and there wouldn't nearly be as much potential skepticism, right? (And what if Fisher tells scouts he was wrong about Russell?)

There's still plenty of time before the draft. And while Winston and Russell are both quarterbacks, they both have different body types and skillsets. As the time for Winston to be drafted (whenever it is) approaches, there will be plenty of time for NFL teams to look at everything for selection. Assuming now, seven months before Winston could possibly be drafted, that Fisher's opinion of Russell could have a significant impact is a bit premature.

USC players read tweets from their teammates (Video)

You've probably seen the segments from the Jimmy Kimmel Show where celebrities read mean tweets about themselves from other people. Inspired by those videos, USC decided to put a twist on the theme.

The school had players read tweets from their teammates and the results are about as awkward as you'd expect. There are too many confused expressions and too much head shaking to count.

The best is when DE Leonard Williams reads TE Randall Telfer's tweet about Erykah Badu. "Erykah Badu makes cheese fries?" You can tell that Williams is intrigued for a second.

We also wonder how DB coach Keith Heyward got roped into it. He read a tweet from safety Su'a Cravens and judging by the look on Heyward's face, he'll probably be cracking a joke at Cravens' expense in team meetings the rest of the season.

Jim Kelly to serve as Miami's Homecoming Grand Marshal

Former Buffalo Bills and Miami Hurricanes QB Jim Kelly is returning to Miami to be the Hurricanes' grand marshal for homecoming.

Kelly has been battling cancer for most of 2014 and has undergone chemotheraphy and radiation treatments. However, an August exam brought great news and showed that Kelly had no signs of cancer. Kelly first had surgery to remove cancer from his jaw in 2013 but the cancer had spread, necessitating further treatment.

“The University of Miami was and remains an important part of my life,” Kelly said in a Miami statement. “My family and I are honored and we look forward to being Grand Marshal of the Homecoming Parade and Honorary Captain for the Homecoming game.”

The game on November 1 against North Carolina will also be designated a #KellyTough green-out and all fans will be encouraged to wear green to the game.

Kelly was at Miami from 1979-1982. He led he Hurricanes to a win over No. 1 Penn State in 1981 and a win in the Peach Bowl the previous year. It was Miami's first bowl game in 14 years. Kelly's arrival on campus was at the same time as coach Howard Schnellenberger's. In Schnellenberger's five years as Miami coach, the Hurricanes were 41-16. Miami was 20-34 in the previous five seasons.

“Jim Kelly to me is as much responsible for rescuing the University of Miami football program and athletic department as anyone,” Miami OL coach Art Kehoe, a teammate of Kelly's while at Miami, said. “So many people have been important to this program, but Jim Kelly was a guy that took us from being ready to drop football to being a national championship contender and having prominence again. He was such a tough guy and such a leader. That’s how he was the whole time he was here. He always wanted to fight and scrap, always trying to compete and win. For me, no one can be the Grand Marshal of our Homecoming ceremonies better than Jim Kelly.”

After leaving Miami, Kelly played in the USFL and then for the Buffalo Bills from 1986-1996. He was inducted into Miami's Hall of Fame in 1992 and the team's football Ring of Honor in 2008.

AIr Force shows off new blue helmets for Navy game (Photos)

Air Force's pursuit of the Commander-in-Chief's trophy will begin with some pretty cool looking blue helmets.

The Falcons debuted their new lids for Saturday's Navy game on twitter Tuesday.

Debuting our newest helmets. Falcons will wear them this Saturday afternoon against service academy rival Navy. http://ift.tt/1rvrRrP

— Air Force FB Equip (@AFFBEQUIPMENT) October 1, 2014

The helmets are basically a reverse of Air Force's standard helmets with the blue fading to white at the front and bottom of the helmet.

The game with Navy kicks off round-robin series with Air Force, Navy and Army that will determine the winner of the Commander-in-Chief's trophy, which is given to the top football service academy.

We'd love to see Navy wear its white helmets for the game too. If the Midshipmen do, the game may be the best-looking special helmet game of the season.

To get ready for the game, former NFL and Georgia RB Herschel Walker spoke to Air Force on Tuesday. Walker still looks like he could suit up and play, though we'll probably be saying that when he's 80.

Thank you to the great @HerschelWalker for coming to speak to the team today! The guys really appreciated it! http://ift.tt/1uDNSG4
