Navy QB Keenan Reynolds cleared to play after knee injury scare
Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds has been cleared to start Saturday’s game against Texas State, according to coach Ken Niumatalolo.
Reynolds suffered a knee injury against Temple last Saturday after he took a helmet to the knee. While Reynolds was hobbled, an MRI on Monday revealed no structural damage and Reynolds’ injury was determined to be a severe bruise.
Reynolds did not practice Monday and Niumatalolo said he wasn’t sure how much Reynolds would play leading up to Saturday’s game.
"We have to be smart and listen to the training staff. It's also up to Keenan and how he feels," Niumatalolo said. "We'll listen to our medical staff and listen to the kid and proceed with caution."
There is no doubt Reynolds, a budding Heisman hopeful, is the engine that makes Navy go. In his first two games this season, Reynolds has amassed 215 rushing yards and three touchdowns while adding 50 passing yards in Navy’s option-heavy offense. His 173 rushing yards against Temple were the third-most in his career trailing a pair of 200-yard performances against Hawaii and San Jose State last season.

Texas WR Jaxon Shipley questionable for UCLA game
Texas announced Wednesday that WR Jaxon Shipley is questionable to play against UCLA after sustaining what the team said was a head injury against BYU.
Shipley left the game against the Cougars on Saturday. BYU won the game 41-7, and now the Longhorns get the No. 12 team in the country in week 3.
"Jaxon is being evaluated, treated and is currently going through our rigorous return to play protocols," Texas trainer Anthony Pass said in a statement.
Shipley, a senior, had five catches against BYU and has 11 in the first two games. He had 59 catches for 737 yards in 2012 and 56 catches for 589 yards last year. He's by far Texas most experienced and established receiver, and his loss is yet another subtraction for the Texas offense, which is missing QB David Ash. Ash is out indefinitely after he suffered a concussion against North Texas.
In addition to Ash and possibly Shipley, Texas won't have tackles Desmond Harrison and Kennedy Estelle back for the UCLA game either. Texas coach Charlie Strong said Monday both players broke "a core value" and there's no timeline for their return.
Strong also said there's been no decision made on Daje Johnson's status with the team. In Shipley's possible absence, Johnson, who had 24 rushing attempts last season and 24 catches, could be counted on to be a playmaker. However, it's doubtful that Johnson, and S Josh Turner, players who have both been suspended since the beginning of the season, will be available to play against UCLA.

Miami fan starts 'GoFundMe' campaign to fly a 'Fire Al Golden' banner during a home game
Miami coach Al Golden has been with the program since 2011 and some fans think it’s been long enough.
Last week, a “GoFundMe” campaign surfaced asking Miami fans fed up with Golden to donate money to pay for a "Fire Al Golden" banner set to fly over Sun Life Stadium during the Nov. 15 game against Florida State.
"The goal of flying the banner versus FSU is to get more exposure," Danny Vazquez, the man behind the campaign, told the Miami New Times. "We feel like board members will take note. We have had good recruiting classes since Golden has been here. The talent is there."
At the time of this posting, the campaign had raised $545 of its $1,000 goal.
This page was made after much demand from many University of Miami football fans, season ticket holders and alumni.
The money raised here will be used towards funding a #FireAlGolden advertisement in Miami. UM fans have had enough and 10 years of mediocrity is too much. Our voice is not being heard and we must take action. UM has too much history and tradition to continue down this path. Al Golden tried to bail on UM and leave to Penn State, we have not forgotten. It is one thing to lose, but another thing to get out coached and not be prepared week in and week out.
During his four seasons, Golden has posted a 23-16 record that includes a 13-12 mark in ACC play. In 2012, the Hurricanes finished first in the Coastal Division, but were ineligible for postseason play thanks to a self-imposed ban stemming from potential NCAA violations that occurred prior to Golden’s tenure.
In 2013, the Hurricanes started the season 7-0, but lost star running back Duke Johnson against Florida State and finished 9-3. This year, Miami started this season with a lopsided loss to ACC newcomer Louisville, which prompted the “GoFundMe” site.
“The problem a lot of us have is that we continue to come out unprepared, even in games we have ample time to prepare for," Vazquez told the website. "Any time we play a decent team, we seem to be out-coached and make no adjustments... Golden's record against teams with winning records is poor."
During Golden’s first three seasons, the Hurricanes were 7-12 against FBS teams that finished the year with winning records and were 0-3 against in-state rival Florida State.
Still, Al Golden has had to deal with some self-imposed sanctions, a sordid NCAA case looming over the head of its program and yet has still — as Vazquez notes — has managed to secure some talented recruiting classes despite the stigma regarding the program.
Anyone who thought the mess Golden inherited — a mess he didn’t know he was inheriting when he took the job — could be cleaned up in a couple years was delusional. It’s almost a small miracle Golden has not had a losing season since he’s been there, and last year’s 9-3 campaign shows that the program is actually improving and moving in the right direction. It was the first nine-win season since 2009 and only the fourth season with nine or more wins since 2004.
And while Vazquez might be serving a small portion of Miami faithful who want to see change, it’s hard to imagine any coach would have been able to weather all of the off-field issues Golden has had to deal with at Miami. The season-opening loss to Louisville is disheartening, no doubt, but that’s a Louisville team that could win the ACC. Golden was given a contract extension because the powers-that-be knew he was put in a bad situation and that he would need several years to clean it up. He currently still has six years remaining on his contract. It’s going to be difficult to find the money and maybe even the willingness to buy him out at this point.

Houston will wear helmets with American flag logo for game on 9/11 (Photo)
Houston will travel to Provo, Utah, for its first road contest of the season against BYU on Thursday. The game is taking place on September 11, and to commemorate those lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, the Cougars will wear white helmets with an American flag “UH” decal.

Houston isn't the only team embracing a patriotic look in Week 3. Maryland's uniforms for Saturday's game against West Virginia have words from the National Anthem on them. Additionally, Virginia Tech's helmets will also feature the stars and stripes inside the logo on Military Appreciation Day at Lane Stadium.
The Cougars improved to 1-1 Saturday with a blowout home win over Grambling State. It will be a tough test to knock off BYU, who recently entered the Top 25 rankings after blowing out Texas on the road, 41-7. The game is BYU’s home opener for the season, so it will sure to be a raucous environment at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Maryland to have words of national anthem on uniforms Saturday (Photo)
Maryland will honor the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore with special Star-Spangled Banner-themed uniforms against West Virginia on Saturday.
The helmets and sleeves of the jerseys will feature the words of the national anthem. (That's the outline of Fort McHenry on the helmets.)
On September 13, 1814, a British naval fleet attacked Fort McHenry in Baltimore. After a bombardment of over 24 hours, the Americans didn't surrender and the British retreated. After the attack ended, what's now known as the Star-Spangled Banner was raised over the fort.
Francis Scott Key witnessed the attack and composed a poem, which is now the national anthem.
From Under Armour:
The uniforms highlight the poem ”Defence of Fort McHenry,” which is sublimated onto the jersey sleeve, helmet and footwear. The logo on the helmet and pant features the outline of Fort McHenry and an image of the famous flag that flew through the night of the Battle, which inspired our national anthem. That flag was also unique in that it only had 15 stars and 15 stripes and is the only flag in American history in which the blue field is touching a red stripe. That detail is incorporated into the shoulder design of the jersey and stripe details on the pant legs and socks.
The uniforms also feature red belts like the ones the American soldiers wore during the battle. As part of the unveiling, Under Armour also announced a 10-year contract extension with Under Armour.
In the pictures released by Under Armour Wednesday morning, "Triumph" is on the back of the Maryland jerseys in lieu of player names. Per a Maryland spokesperson, the school was given a one-time exemption to have the slogan on the back. The NCAA outlaws slogans on the back of jerseys in lieu of player names for all non-service academies. (Remember the controversy surrounding Vanderbilt's jerseys in week one?)
What do you think? Overall, they're a good look. Patriotic jerseys can tend to be garish, but these aren't exceptionally so. They get a thumbs up.

Utah unveils new white helmets, team goes crazy (Video)
Team reaction videos never get old.
Coming off a dominant 59-27 win at home over Fresno State, Utah was back to the grind on Monday. Though the team has a bye this week, its next matchup is a trip up north to the Big House to face Michigan in Ann Arbor – one of the more intimidating environments in college football. So to give the team a little bit of a boost, head coach Kyle Whittingham unveiled some new white helmets.
Predictably, the team went nuts in one of the better reaction videos so far this season.
The helmet reveal had a good setup, too. Senior defensive end Nate Orchard came out in a white uniform wearing the Utes usual red helmet, but then the white helmet is pulled out from behind the podium to complete the look.
The video even has multiple angles! Well done, Utah.
Oh, and here’s a closer look at the new lids.

It’s not confirmed when the Utes will debut the white helmets, but a nationally televised game against Michigan with the chance to improve to 3-0 would make a whole lot of sense.

Virginia Tech will wear patriotic helmets Saturday (Photos)
Fresh off of its upset over Ohio State Saturday night, Virginia Tech unveiled a new patriotic helmet Monday night. The team will wear the helmets in this weekend’s matchup against East Carolina, which will be Military Appreciation Day at Lane Stadium.

According to a release from the school, the helmets are meant to honor those who have served, are currently serving, or those who have lost their lives or injured in the line of duty. Throughout the game, there will be several activities and ceremonies that will recognize the Military, including video tributes and a WWII B-25 flyover.
The win over Ohio State gave the 2-0 Hokies a boost to No. 17 in the rankings. East Carolina won its opener over North Carolina Central before hanging close with South Carolina in a 33-23 loss.
Saturday’s game will kick off at noon.

Penn State students rallied for the return of the Joe Paterno statue Monday night (Video)
A large and vociferous group of Penn State students converged on Old Main at the Penn State campus Monday night to clamor for the return of Joe Paterno's statue.
Monday, the NCAA announced that the two years left on Penn State's bowl ban would be lifted and the Nittany Lions would be immediately eligible for postseason play.
As part of the sanctions for the sex abuse scandal surrounding former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, Penn State was hit with a loss of scholarships and a bowl ban among other penalties. The team will also have a full scholarship allotment in 2015.
The group chanted "Where's the statue?" in reference to the statue of Paterno that was taken down outside Beaver Stadium on July 22, 2012, a day before the penalties were announced against the school.
According to the Penn State Collegian, the rally had over 1,000 students and before the group ended up at Old Main, they were at Beaver Stadium. It was largely a peaceful protest, and the paper reported that the only damage from the gathering occurred to a stop sign.
While we can see the need for some to celebrate the removal of the sanctions, immediately turning the sentiments towards the statue of Paterno, a statue that has been gone for over two years, is odd. But odd is a great way to describe the sentiments of some Penn State fans surrounding the statue.
The statue was removed by the school after details of Paterno's role in the scandal were known. It was not part of the NCAA sanctions against the school and, quite frankly, it's insignificant for any reasons other than symbolic ones if the statue goes back up.
Plus, there's a stark difference between the reduction of penalties and the absolution of them. The NCAA's penalties didn't simply just disappear and Sandusky was found guilty on 45 of 48 charges in his criminal trial. Monday's action doesn't mean everything can return to what it used to be before the statue was taken down and the sanctions weren't put in place. There's a time and place to discuss any future tributes to Joe Paterno. Monday night was not one of them.

Florida State to make midseason tweaks to helmet and away uniform
Did you think the colors on Florida State's new away uniforms looked a little odd when the Seminoles played Oklahoma State? You were not alone.
The Seminoles' away uniform will undergo some midseason changes. The helmet will be tweaked as well, and it'll be different in time for FSU's game against Clemson on September 20. The changes primarily center around making the garnet and gold on the uniforms, well, more garnet and gold.
Senior associate athletic director Monk Bonasorte confirmed to Warchant.com on Saturday that the gold helmets will be painted darker before the Seminoles take the field on Sept. 20 against Clemson. The facemasks also are expected to be returned to the proper shade of garnet.
"We made a commitment to get everything sent off on Monday, since we have an open week and we'll make the adjustments we need to make," Bonasorte said before FSU's game against The Citadel.
The biggest change to the away uniforms will be garnet numbers instead of gold numbers. According to Warchant, the school knew of gold-on-white issues and were planning on making changes before a potential bowl game. However those changes will be accelerated. Florida State has four more games where it would potentially wear white.
The facemask paint on FSU helmets was peeling during the Oklahoma State game and the school said the color was already changed for the game against The Citadel. The top picture is from the game against The Citadel while the bottom picture is from the Oklahoma State game.
