Oklahoma confident Dorial Green-Beckham will play this season
Oklahoma officials think transfer Dorial Green-Beckham could suit up for the Sooners this season after he’s granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA.
Green-Beckham transferred to Oklahoma after he was dismissed from Missouri following several run-ins with the law during his two seasons with the program.
According to the Oklahoman, Oklahoma is planning to use something called the “run-off” waiver, which is in place for players who were removed from their programs through no fault of their own. Oklahoma will contend that Green-Beckham was dismissed from the Missouri team for a legal issue for which he was never charged.
On April 6, Green-Beckham was the subject of a suspected burglary after a Missouri student said Green-Beckham forced open her apartment door at 2:30 a.m. while trying to see his girlfriend. Columbia, Mo., police said they could not arrest Green-Beckham because the witness feared retaliation if she came forward with her complaint.
Columbia police said Green-Beckham’s girlfriend sent the witness 16 text messages asking her not to press charges. One of the text messages claimed Green-Beckham dragged his girlfriend from the apartment by her neck, which prompted a domestic abuse investigation, but the friend said she was drunk and didn’t remember sending the messages.
In January, Green-Beckham was arrested with two other men in Springfield, Mo., after police found a pound of marijuana in their car. However, no criminal charges were filed. Green-Beckham also was charged with marijuana possession in October 2012, but he later pleaded guilty to second-degree trespassing.
Oklahoma has yet to file its appeal to the NCAA as it is waiting on one final document from Missouri. Both Missouri coach Gary Pinkel and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said they talked regarding Green-Beckham before Oklahoma added him to the roster. Pinkel maintained that he thought Green-Beckham deserved a fresh start.
Green-Beckham caught 87 passes for 1,278 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons at Missouri. Oklahoma currently has just one receiver on its roster with significant college experience.

Georgia QB Hutson Mason wears No. 43 pin to honor late friend Philip Lutzenkirchen
When Georgia quarterback Hutson Mason met with the media Friday, his first official media day as the Bulldogs starter, he did so wearing a No. 43 pin.
The pin, which Mason said he plans to wear a lot this season, bears the Auburn jersey number of his good friend Philip Lutzenkirchen, who was killed in a single-car accident in late June.

— Radi Nabulsi (@RadiNabulsi) August 1, 2014
Mason and Lutzenkirchen had been friends since they were 7 years old. They played high school football and baseball together, and though Lutzenkirchen decided to play at Auburn while Mason went to Georgia, the two kept in touch regularly.
In fact, the two spoke just 48 hours before Lutzenkirchen’s fateful crash.
“It’s a conversation I’ll cherish,” Mason told the Marietta Daily Journal. “It seemed like it was God-ordained. He reached out to me and said he was praying for me. He wanted me to have a big year this season after all the things I went through (waiting four years for the chance to start).
“I was lucky Friday to have that conversation. I’m counting my blessings. I just wish I had a superpower where I could go back and tell him not to get in that car.”
Lutzenkirchen, 23, was a passenger in the 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe when it ran a stop sign, careened out of control and flipped several times before coming to rest on its roof. Lutzenkirchen, who was sitting in the second row of the vehicle on the driver side, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. He suffered a neck injury that resulted in a spinal fracture. Driver Joseph Davis also wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and suffered blunt force trauma to the skull as he was partially ejected from the SUV. They were the only two casualties. Two other passengers were injured.
Mason said he planned to honor his friend this season and the pin is probably just the first of many tributes especially since Mason credits Lutzenkirchen for helping him get recruited to Georgia.
“Philip really helped me with the recruiting process,” said Mason, who is a senior and getting his first opportunity to start. “Once he was done (with recruiting), he got me in touch with all his recruiting contacts. He helped me get my highlight tapes and my name out there.
“He really was the older brother I never had.”

Nike asked FSU for Jimbo Fisher's son not to wear Under Armour sweatshirt in November
Ethan Fisher, the son of Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, can't be accused of not supporting his father's team. He's usually wearing FSU gear while watching the Seminoles.
When FSU beat Miami on Nov. 2, 2013, Ethan had a Florida State sweatshirt on. However, that sweatshirt was made by Under Armour. Florida State has a contract with Nike for its teams.
Nike noticed this and emailed Florida State about it after the game. The Wall Street Journal obtained the emails via a Freedom of Information Act request that covered "a two-week period" in November. (In case you were wondering, allegations of sexual assault against FSU QB Jameis Winston surfaced on Nov. 13.)
In the email, Nike's Mark Dupes, the company's assistant director for football sports marketing, congratulated FSU on the win and then said:
"Hey got a text from the USA Director of Sports Marketing last night telling me of how good things look w FSU and our players and sideline staff, exposure for the Brand was exceptional. Then 5 min later I rec a new message…Said ABC cameras were on Jimbo and his Son ad end of the game…His son was Wearing Under Armour FSU sweatshirt! Ouch. Can we please ask Jimbo to eliminate that from the son's wardrobe in the future! Let me know if I can help w anything. Thx guys. MD"
Florida State senior associate athletics director Monk Bonasorte told the WSJ he remembered the email but said "What am I going to do, go to coach and say, 'Hey can you take that shirt off him? I'm not going to call Jimbo Fisher and tell him what his son can wear."
Bonasorte also classified the remark about the brand of sweatshirt as more of a joke than anything. Nike issued a statement saying that the contract with FSU does not extend to relatives of FSU athletic department members. However, the WSJ says photos from the rest of Florida State's season show Ethan in Nike apparel.
After Florida State won the BCS Championship Game in January, Ethan was wearing a Nike hat and shirt.
And at a Florida State basketball game in February, he was rocking the Nike gear too.
Plus, both of Fisher's sons have custom Nike jerseys.
Perhaps the following Nike sightings are a mere coincidence. But based off the email, even if Florida State hasn't formally said anything to the Fishers, we're going to guess that Ethan will have a Nike sweatshirt for games in cooler temperatures this fall. And probably a new jersey too after FSU announced it will have new uniforms in 2014.

Florida State transfer QB Jacob Coker makes his Alabama practice debut (Video)
With Alabama preseason camp officially under way Friday morning, we got our first glimpse at Jacob Coker in a Crimson Tide uniform. Coker, a Florida State transfer, is the man believed by many to be the replacement for AJ McCarron at quarterback in 2014.
It has been assumed all summer that Coker, a redshirt junior, would take over the starting role, but head coach Nick Saban has long maintained that Coker will battle it out with fifth-year senior Blake Sims and redshirt freshman Cooper Bateman for the starting role.
On Friday morning, according to Al.com, Sims was working first in drills with Coker second. Coker reportedly “had a handful of high throws,” but that’s not uncommon for a player in his first practice.
Here’s some video of Coker (No. 14) and Sims (No. 6), via TideSports.com.
Whoever wins the job will be making his first career collegiate start when the Tide opens up its season against West Virginia in Atlanta on August 30.
The 6-foot, 202-pound Sims, who has four years of experience in Alabama’s system, was the primary backup behind McCarron last year while Bateman redshirted. Coker, while at FSU, was in a heated battle for the starting role with eventual Heisman winner Jameis Winston.
Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher called the 6-foot-6, 235-pound Coker the most talented quarterback Saban has had in his tenure at Alabama.
“He’s more talented than anything they’ve had,” Fisher told TideSports.com. “I don’t mean to discredit the previous guys, they were all great. But this guy is extremely talented. Arm and mind. He’s a backup because he’s behind the best quarterback in America. (Coker) may have been one of the top three or four quarterbacks in America physically.
“We could have been right there in the same position last year with him, I really believe that. You just had to make a choice. If he had played, got his reps and got in that role, we would have done extremely well. I’m a Jacob Coker fan.”
That’s high praise for a guy who’s barely seen the field, but it really has given the Crimson Tide faithful high expectations for the transfer.
Friday’s practice was just the start. We’ll continue to monitor Alabama’s QB competition as it moves forward.

Saban suspends three for team rules violations
Three Alabama players suspended for violations of team rules
As its fall camp began on Friday, Alabama was without three players due to suspension.
After practice, coach Nick Saban said linebacker Tim Williams, defensive lineman Brandon Ivory and defensive lineman Jarran Reed were suspended due to violations of team rules.
"Each guy can return to the team on the completion of a requirement for what they have to do relative to their suspension," Saban said (via TideSports.com).
It's not known how long those requirements will take to fulfill or what they are.
Williams played in seven games last year and had three tackles. Ivory played in 12 games and had 24 tackles in 2013 while Reed joined the team this year after playing at East Mississippi Community College. He was arrested for DUI in July.
Saban also said that RB Bo Scarbrough didn't qualify academically and will attempt to have him join the team in January. Scarbrough was a five-star recruit out of Tuscaloosa Academy and the No. 2 RB in the Rivals class of 2014 behind LSU RB Leonard Fournette.
While the loss of a five-star recruit for the upcoming season is a big blow for most schools, it's different at Alabama, especially for running backs. While Fournette is expected to contribute immediately at LSU, Alabama already has T.J. Yeldon, Kenyan Drake and Derrick Henry in the running back rotation.

VOD: Alabama fan is camping out for 103 hours to be first in line for 'Fan Day'
The annual Alabama Fan Day will take place Sunday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Fans will get an early glimpse at the 2014 Crimson Tide by watching a team practice, and then they’ll get the chance to collect autographs from players and coaches.
One fan is very excited for the festivities.
Thanks to Busted Coverage, we get to meet 32-year-old Bobby Hunter, an Alabama fan who began to camp out for Fan Day at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning – a full 103 hours before practice begins on Sunday. For real.
Hunter told Busted Coverage that he’s using vacation time from work to camp out and that he’ll sleep in the tailgating chair for all four nights to maintain his first spot in line.
He also has a well-crafted sign depicting the extent of his fandom.

Michael Sam's former roommate at Missouri says he's changed
Eric Waters, a former TE at Missouri, said he thinks former Missouri DE Michael Sam, the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, has changed.
Waters and Sam were roommates at Missouri. In February, Sam publicly announced he was gay and was drafted in the seventh round of the NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams. Waters was undrafted and is currently at training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers. If Sam plays in a game for the Rams he'll be the first openly gay player to play in the NFL.
“He is a nice guy, but I will say the truth: A little bit of him has changed,” Waters told the Pittsburgh Tribune. “It is really not my situation to speculate at this point, but he is not the same Michael Sam anymore.”
How does Waters think Sam has changed?
“Just the way he acts and carries himself,”Waters said. “I was watching the NFL Network the other day and I think it was Marshall Faulk who said that he keeps referring to himself in the third person as Michael Sam this, Michael Sam that. That's not the same guy we knew back when we were living together. He is not the same fun-loving, joking guy that really didn't care about stuff like publicity.”
Waters added that he and Sam don't communicate currently. After Sam made his announcement, Waters made this series of tweets before saying he meant no disrespect to anyone, nor was he angry at all with Missouri, which he said had treated him well.
Sam told his teammates before the season that he was gay and according to many at the school, the entire team embraced him. His sexuality wasn't a story throughout Missouri's 12-2 season. After the season, Missouri was given the SEC Sportsmanship Award.
Waters had eight catches in 2013 and 14 throughout his career.
After Sam was drafted, plans to film a reality show were announced. However, they were scuttled shortly after they were made public.

Ohio State LB Joshua Perry shows off 30-pound weight gain in 2.5 years (Photo)
When Ohio State LB Josh Perry came to campus in January 2012, he weighed 222 pounds. Now, some 30 months later, he's 253 pounds, and most of that weight gain is muscle.
Need proof? Here are some pretty cool side-by-side progress pictures that Perry posted to Instagram on Thursday. If you follow college football closely, you hear a lot about how much weight players gain by entering an FBS strength and conditioning program. But you rarely get to see progress pictures like this.
Gotta love what testosterone, food, hard work and a good strength program will do for you. That's impressive, and a much more convincing transformation than any fake side-by-side comparison on an infomercial.

2014 season preview: Five games to watch in week 10
The college football offseason is long and arduous, but its end is almost in sight. We’re going to take a look at five games you have to look forward to for every weekend of the season. (This is also a handy guide to decide how to RSVP for any autumn weddings.)
All times are Eastern and all games are played on Saturday unless otherwise noted.
These games take place the weekend of November 1.
Previously: Week One (August 30) ~ Week Two (September 6) ~ Week Three (September 13) ~ Week Four (September 20) ~ Week Five (September 27) ~ Week Six (October 4) ~ Week Seven (October 11) ~ Week Eight (October 18) ~ Week Nine (October 25)
Stanford at Oregon (TBD)
The last two seasons Oregon has carried an undefeated record into a November game with the Cardinal where they were double-digit favorites. The last two seasons they have also been ranked within the top two spots in the polls and the last two seasons they have imploded against Stanford, dropping their division and any chance at a PAC-12 title or national title game berth. Last year was particularly embarrassing, as Marcus Mariota and the Ducks offense were held scoreless for three quarters before finally putting on a rally in a 26-20 loss. (Oregon lost 17-14 in overtime two years ago, their only 2012 black mark.) A few of the main roadblocks for Mark Helfrich’s offense have departed (Cardinal linebackers Shayne Skov and Trent Murphy are gone, as is defensive coordinator Derek Mason, now running the show at Vanderbilt), which should make it a little easier to score points, but David Shaw has enough holdovers who’ve won at Autzen remain to make this supremely interesting. There is little room for error in the PAC-12 in 2014, particularly against the team you’re most likely to need a head-to-head tiebreaker.
Florida State at Louisville (7:30 p.m., Thursday)
If you want to point to one moment that started Louisville’s rise from Conference USA to the ACC, you could do worse than a 2002 Thursday night game against No. 4 Florida State. In a driving rain the Cardinals battled for a 26-20 overtime win against the heavily favored Seminoles, picking off Chris Rix on the first play of overtime before punching in the winning score on a 25-yard Henry Miller run. (The whole game is available on YouTube, with a Mike Tirico/Kirk Herbstreit/Lee Corso booth. Bless the internet.) The two are now conference and division rivals, and while they would need to survive trips to Clemson and Syracuse, it is possible Louisville could be 8-0 and coming off a bye as they prepare for the national champs. But the Seminoles also have a bye prior to this game. And they have Jameis Winston. And Mario Edwards at the front of a rangy, powerful defense. And a beastly offensive line to get everything going. Jimbo Fisher’s defending champs are stacked, but a weeknight trip to Papa John’s Stadium could be their toughest test of the season. Must see TV on a Thursday night.
Florida vs. Georgia (in Jacksonville, TBD)
The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party was the Gators’ annual reminder of their dominance over the Bulldogs under Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer, who combined to go 18-3 between 1990 and 2010. However the last three years have belonged to Mark Richt’s Dawgs, scraping by with four, eight and three-point victories. Florida is considered a bit of an outsider in the SEC East race despite their loads of talent and 12-2 finish in 2012, and with Georgia not only a hated rival but the division favorite, this is a big, big game for Will Muschamp’s future in Gainesville. Georgia brings back eight starters from a defense that was forced to reload in 2013 along with a bevy of skill position talent, giving Richt a potential playoff contender. The Gator offense will try to find some semblance of life under new coordinator Kurt Roper (coming over from Duke) and young blue-chip talent at the skill positions (tailback Kelvin Taylor and wideout Demarcus Robinson could shine as sophomores). Florida almost has to be healthier and luckier than last year, right? Both teams are coming off byes.
Auburn at Ole Miss (TBD)
To show you how low the expectations were at the start of the 2013 season for Gus Malzahn and the Tigers, Ole Miss was favored by a field goal when these two teams played in early October – at Auburn. That was a bit of a coming out party for Nick Marshall, who ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns on the way to a 30-22 win, but it was the Tigers defensive line that handled things late, sacking Bo Wallace on third and fourth down to end the Ole Miss comeback threat. Marshall is back, along with most of his offensive and a potentially destructive new backfield mate in Racean “Roc” Thomas, a five-star freshman from Oxford, Alabama. (Go ahead and spend a few minutes with his highlight reel.) But the Rebels are at home and return nine starters on defense, including a five-star counter to Thomas in sophomore tackle Robert Nkemdiche (his highlights). Just another brutal chapter in the 2014 SEC West round robin.
Northwestern at Iowa (TBD)
It’s conceivable Iowa is 7-0 coming into this game, which begins a Big Ten West run that will decide whether they make the title game or not. Northwestern is primed for a bounce-back year, with their entire offensive line, a quarterback in Trevor Siemian who got plenty snaps last year following starter Kain Colter’s injury and a veteran receiving corps that will be bolstered by the arrival of Kyle Prater, a USC transfer who was one of the top players in the country coming out of high school. Iowa’s defense will need to reload their linebacking crew but they bring back a majority of their offense (including some improbably healthy running backs) and get the Wildcats in Iowa City. Both teams will be coming off byes and Northwestern has a recent history of ruining Hawkeye seasons, winning as a double-digit underdog against ranked Iowa teams in both 2009 and 2010.
Other games to consider:
Cincinnati at Tulane (8:00 p.m., Friday)
This takes place Halloween night in New Orleans. I don’t think we need to go much further on the potential weirdness that could occur.
North Carolina at Miami (TBD)
Everyone is really a potential favorite in the Coastal (except Virginia), but this pits perhaps the two most talented teams in the division against one another. These two actually tied for the division crown in 2012 but neither was eligible for the postseason, which sent Georgia Tech to the title game.
Texas at Texas Tech (TBD)
When discussing Baylor/Texas we mentioned the Longhorns current place in the state’s college football hierarchy. The Red Raiders are comfortably below the flagship school in Austin (five straight wins), but Kliff Kingsbury is building something in Lubbock with nine returning starters on the offense.
Arizona at UCLA (TBD)
In 2012, Rich Rodriguez’s first season as Arizona head coach, the Wildcats were drilled by the Bruins 66-10. Last year that improved to a respectable 31-26 loss at home, but he hasn’t been able to best Jim Mora during their PAC-12 tenures. Expect at least a few points here.
Wisconsin at Rutgers (TBD)
The Scarlet Knights are coming off their third straight bowl appearance and return 16 starters, including all five offensive linemen to go with their leading passer, rusher and receiver. A potential Badger upset in the swamps of Jersey, but Gary Anderson’s defense should have found a combination that works by this point in the season after needing to replace eight defensive starters.
USC at Washington State (TBD)
The loss that likely started the ball rolling on Lane Kiffin’s axing last year was a 10-7 week two defeat to the Cougars, which came at home in a game where Mike Leach’s team didn’t score an offensive touchdown. Would likely be wise for Steve Sarkisian to avoid a similar misstep against his old Apple Cup foe.

Top Georgia receiver Mitchell reinjures knee
Georgia WR Malcolm Mitchell to miss the start of camp after another knee surgery
Georgia WR Malcolm Mitchell's recovery from a torn ACL is not going smoothly.
Mitchell, a redshirt junior in 2014, underwent knee surgery on Thursday to fix what UGASports.com termed a "cartilage issue" in his right knee. Mitchell hurt his knee while running routes with the other Georgia receivers on Monday.
He's expected to make a "full recovery" but a timetable has not been set for his return according to school officials. Mitchell tore his right ACL while celebrating a touchdown against Clemson in Georgia's first game of 2013 and missed the rest of the season. He went up for a chest bump and landed awkwardly.
An injury to Mitchell's left leg forced him to miss spring practice earlier this year. When the school announced Mitchell's injury in the spring, it didn't provide specifics but said he would be ready for fall practice.
Mitchell had 40 catches for 572 yards in 2012. Georgia's first game of 2014 is again against Clemson on August 30.
