Texas captain Desmond Jackson apologizes for coin toss gaffe
Texas’ game against UCLA over the weekend got off to a strange start before the opening kickoff even took place. Before Jerry Neuheisel led the Bruins to a comeback win, it was the coin toss – yes, the coin toss – that managed to gather some headlines.
Texas captain Desmond Jackson somehow managed to botch the coin toss so UCLA received the kickoff to begin both halves. Jackson, a senior defensive tackle, apologized to Texas fans for the gaffe via Twitter on Tuesday.
To everyone including longhorn nation.. That's my fault on the coin toss.. You live and you learn. It won't happen again.
— SugaRay Jackson (@tank_texasboy99) September 16, 2014
People never can talk about their own mistakes but wanna talk about everyone else.. I'm human an sometimes you freeze up an make mistakes..
— SugaRay Jackson (@tank_texasboy99) September 16, 2014
So I learn from it. And I'm moving forward and continue to be one of the best d-lineman and best teammate I can be in the country.God bless
— SugaRay Jackson (@tank_texasboy99) September 16, 2014
As Jackson alluded to in the second tweet, he “froze up” after the Bruins won the toss and deferred their choice to the second half. When this happens, he should have elected for his team to receive the opening kickoff since there was no chance the Bruins would choose to kick to start the second half.
Here’s video of the toss, which even included the referee explaining the circumstances clearly.
The Longhorns ended up losing 20-17, so an additional possession certainly wouldn’t have hurt in a game that went down to the final minutes.

FSU QB Jameis Winston shouted an obscene phrase in the student union
For nearly a year, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher has been exhaustive telling everyone who would listen — and that's a lot of us — that quarterback Jameis Winston is a really mature guy.
And habitually, Winston proves his coach wrong.
The Heisman Trophy winner’s latest act of immaturity came Tuesday when he stood up on a table in the Florida State student union and yelled an obscene phrase at the top of his lungs.
Winston’s choice of phrase wasn’t random. It came from a fake newscast video that surfaced earlier this year (please note that the link contains obscene language). The obscene phrase was then turned into a meme and people then thought it was funny and cool to yell it during live newscasts… and apparently in student unions.
It’s easy to chalk Winston’s behavior up to some childish college prank, but when is enough going to be enough? He’s not an average college student; he’s not just some guy. He’s the face of the Florida State football program — some would even say the university itself — and a Heisman Trophy winner. If former Heisman winners were up in arms about former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel sullying the bronze trophy’s image with his partying, one can only imagine what they think of continually seeing Winston’s name attached to negative headline after negative headline.
It was just five months ago that Winston was cited for stealing crab legs from a local grocery store and six months before that he was the subject of a sexual assault case. He’s still at the center of an unresolved Title IX investigation involving the same alleged victim.
There also was a BB gun fight that resulted in thousands of dollars worth of damage to an apartment complex and Winston stealing soda at a Burger King.
And he’s only been on campus a couple years.
Florida State has yet to address Winston’s latest headline and it's unclear if it even will. Think Fisher might suspend him for Saturday’s game against Clemson? Well, if Fisher didn’t suspend him when he was accused of sexual assault, Winston is probably not going to see much punishment following his obscene outburst in front of a bunch of his peers.
Winston might be a proven leader on the field, but off the field he has proven to be a liability. At some point, Florida State is going to have to weigh the cost of winning with the cost of its own integrity.

Some fans organizing 'Joe-out' for Penn State game against UMass
With the bowl ban and NCAA scholarship sanctions for the Jerry Sandusky scandal now officially in the past for Penn State, some fans are organizing a tribute to former coach Joe Paterno during Saturday's game at UMass.
A small group wants to organize a "Joe-Out" before and during the game. What does that mean? Well, it means tributes to Paterno, whether it be dressing like him, bringing pictures or something else.
“He will forever stand as a great founder of our university, shoulder to shoulder with Atherton, Beaver, Pattee, Sparks and more. There will be other coaches, other presidents, other trustees and great men in Penn State’s future, but that does not mean we should forget this one man, who made Penn State great. My family and I eagerly await the future — but we will never forget to honor Joe,” Susan Beck Wilson said (Via CentreDaily.com.)
Paterno had an NCAA-record 409 wins as a head coach but as part of the sanctions against the university, 111 of them were taken away. Paterno was fired in November 2011 as allegations surrounding Sandusky's crimes became public. Three university officials are awaiting trial for their role in the cover up.
Sandusky is currently serving life in prison after being found guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse. In 2001, Paterno was told of an incident involving Sandusky and a boy in the showers at Penn State's football facilities. He passed the report on to Penn State officials and has been criticized for failing to take the matter to police.
Shortly before the sanctions were announced against Penn State in 2012, the statue of Paterno was taken down.
The "Joe-Out" is far from a mass movement. According to PennLive.com, there were 339 attendees on Facebook as of Tuesday morning. It's doubtful there will be a stadium full of Paterno lookalikes on Saturday. However, those behind the event are wanting to be known. It's a take on the white-outs and blue-outs the school organizes for fans.
“We want to make an impact, as Joe would say,” Laurie Anne Stannell told Centre Daily.

Duke will look to improve its record to 4-0 when it hosts Tulane at Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils have won their first three games over Elon, Troy and Kansas by an average of 31 points, so the defending ACC Coastal Division champions are off to a good start in 2014.
To keep the good times rolling before the ACC schedule starts, the Blue Devils will wear special white throwback helmets against the Green Wave for Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. ET kickoff.

Wife of Florida OC Kurt Roper has great response to his press conference comment
Florida offensive coordinator Kurt Roper met with the media on Tuesday and, as most coaches do, cracked a joke.
His wife, Britt Roper, is a former sports reporter. So it gave Kurt Roper the chance to joke about the media in attendance and he said that his wife looked better than most reporters. Though he may want the qualifier back after Britt saw the comment on Twitter.
@ZachAbolverdi did he really say "most"?
— Britt Roper (@brittaroper) September 16, 2014
We definitely laughed.
We're not going to assume that Britt is mad at Kurt, rather that this is going to be a joke that he won't live down at home in the foreseeable future. And a cue for Kurt to open his next press conference by definitively stating his wife is a lot better looking than everyone assembled to ask him questions.
Florida plays Saturday at Alabama. It's Roper's first game against Alabama as Florida's offensive coordinator. After coaching at Duke last season, he replaced former offensive coordinator Brent Pease.

Following DUI arrest, Miami QB Kevin Olsen no longer enrolled at school
A day after being arrested for DUI and possession of a fake or stolen driver’s license, Miami quarterback Kevin Olsen is no longer with the Hurricanes program.
The Miami athletic department announced the news in a short press release Tuesday afternoon.
“Kevin Olsen is no longer a student at the University of Miami. We wish him the very best in the future,” the statement read.
Olsen, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman, was arrested and booked after 4 a.m. Monday morning after South Miami Police were called to investigate an incident at a home. According to a police report, police encountered Olsen when he drove up to the home and asked what was going on. At that point, an officer observed that Olsen had “bloodshot watery eyes and an odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath as he spoke in a slurred speech.”
Olsen then failed a field sobriety test because he was unable to maintain his balance. He blew a .04 on a Breathalyzer test and was also in possession of five different IDs from four different states.
Miami head coach Al Golden expressed disappointment on Monday.
“What’s of paramount concern right now is just his well-being, helping him through this,” Golden said. “I just want to make sure that he’s getting the help that he needs and that he’s safe – his well-being is what we’re thinking about.”
Olsen, former four-star recruit, never saw the field for the Hurricanes. He was suspended for the first game of this season after he reportedly failed a drug test. Though he briefly took first-team reps during spring practice, the suspension allowed freshman Brad Kaaya and Kansas transfer Jake Heaps to pass Olsen on the depth chart.
Coming off a win over Arkansas State, the Hurricanes are 2-1 this season. Golden’s squad will travel to Lincoln for a Saturday night matchup with Nebraska this weekend.

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione says OU wouldn't have recruited Dorial Green-Beckham now
When Oklahoma announced it was adding Dorial Green-Beckham to its roster, just three months after Missouri had kicked him of its squad for multiple run-ins with the law, it raised some eyebrows.
The final straw for Missouri was a police report that said Green-Beckham had forced his way into his girlfriend’s home and pushed her roommate down four stairs. The report also said Green-Beckham dragged his girlfriend out of the apartment by her neck.
No charges were ever filed because the roommate feared backlash and the girlfriend was uncooperative. But it was enough for Missouri to cut ties.
It wasn’t, however, a deal breaker for Oklahoma at the time, but in light of the situation involving former NFL running back Ray Rice and his domestic abuse issues, Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione told Sports illustrated that his university probably would not have allowed Green-Beckham to join its roster if he had tried to transfer now.
“If someone presented a case like that now, I think you would be fair to say that he probably wouldn’t be at Oklahoma,” Castiglione said. “Just because of the attention and the cases now in the public consciousness, the university would have been unlikely to take on a situation like that.”
Castiglione also noted that the school does not regret adding Green-Beckham to its roster, so not sure how much those comments to Sports Illustrated are worth at this point. I mean, this is a school that tried to get Green-Beckman immediate eligibility from the NCAA by claiming that he was unfairly released from Missouri since he was never charged with a crime. And while that incident is the one that’s highlighted, it’s important to note that Green-Beckham had two prior run-ins with the law because of drug possession. So, it’s not like Castiglione is sticking up for a model citizen that made one mistake. There’s a pattern of bad behavior that was ignored by Oklahoma, which claimed Green-Beckham needed a second chance. Actually, this would be his fourth chance, but whatever.
Oklahoma did suspend freshman running back Joe Mixon for the season while he’s being investigated for punching a woman and breaking four bones in her face during an altercation at a restaurant prior to the school year. That was the right move.
However, Oklahoma’s stance on Green-Beckham is ridiculous. Domestic abuse is domestic abuse and it shouldn’t take a video of it hitting TMZ for people to finally gain a conscience about it.

Marcus Mariota holds as the betting Heisman favorite through three games
Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is still at the top of the Heisman odds, but there are a couple of new faces right behind him.
According to the Bovada sportsbook, Mariota remains the Heisman favorite at odds of 11/2 through the first three weeks of the season. Georgia RB Todd Gurley is second at 7/1 while Texas A&M QB Kenny Hill is third at 15/2.
Florida State QB Jameis Winston is still fourth, but he's now tied with another QB. Notre Dame's Everett Golson has moved from 16/1 to tie Winston at 10/1. (Winston was previously 8/1.) Through the first three games of the year, Golson is 62-96 passing for 780 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions. He also has four rushing touchdowns.
BYU's dual-threat QB Taysom Hill started the season off the board and he's now tied for the ninth-highest favorite at 20/1. He's tied with Nebraska's Ameer Abdullah, the RB who had the miraculous run-after-catch for Nebraska to beat McNeese State.
Here's how the entire top 10 looks.
Oregon QB Marcus Mariota 11/2
Georgia RB Todd Gurley 7/1
Texas A&M QB Kenny Hill 15/2
Florida State QB Jameis Winston 10/1
Notre Dame QB Everett Golson 10/1
Oklahoma QB Trevor Knight 12/1
Baylor QB Bryce Petty 14/1 (missed game against Northwestern State)
Auburn QB Nick Marshall 16/1
Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah 20/1
BYU QB Taysom Hill 20/1
The odds for champions of the first College Football Playoff are largely unchanged from last week. Florida State is the top favorite at 5/1 and the Noles are followed by Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma. USC, which was 12/1 to win the national title after beating Stanford in week two is now listed at 40/1 and the 17th favorite.

Wake Forest Photoshops a recruit onto a People Magazine cover with Kim Kardashian (Photo)
Recruiting is weird.
Coaches will go to extreme lengths to land a top prospect, and a recent trend shows programs photoshopping recruits onto magazine covers. Most of the time, the player will be superimposed onto a cover of a sports magazine like Sports Illustrated with a headline about the player leading a program to prominence.
Wake Forest took a different approach with three-star defensive end Kengera Daniel.
— Kengera Daniel (@WYWH_Daniel22) September 16, 2014
Yup. This is weird.
That’s Daniel on a fake cover of People Magazine with Kim Kardashian being touted as “pop culture’s newest power couple.” They even have a “KimGera” nickname like Kardashian does with her husband Kanye West (KimYe).
The cover also touts the ACC as the “real power conference.” Also, don’t miss the program-building feature with Dave Clawson!
This is even weirder than Tennessee Beyoncé cover for Shy Tuttle from last month.
they snapped with this http://ift.tt/1zvtkND
— Shy Tuttle (@KingTut_90) August 26, 2014
Daniel, the 16th-best weakside defensive end in the 2015 class, also has offers from schools like Alabama, Florida State, Michigan and Tennessee, so he’d be a great pull if Wake Forest was able to land a commitment. And if Wake does get Daniel’s signature, the Kardashian cover will undoubtedly be the reason why.

Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley says he is better than Jadeveon Clowney
Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley saw plenty of No. 1 overall NFL pick Jadeveon Clowney when Clowney was suiting up for South Carolina, Clemson’s biggest rival. Beasley, a fifth-year senior who is also considered to be a highly regarded NFL prospect, doesn’t mind comparing himself to Clowney either.
“I feel like I’m the better player,” Beasley told Sports Illustrated.
Through two games for the Tigers this season, the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Beasley has registered three tackles for loss and two sacks. That’s a solid start following an All-American 2013 campaign where he racked up 44 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and 13 sacks compared to 28 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and three sacks from Clowney.
With 23 career sacks, Beasley is just one sack behind Clowney’s career total of 24. He could surpass Clowney this weekend when the Tigers take on top-ranked Florida State.
Beasley feels like he has one thing that separates him from the rest.
“I feel like I’ve got the best first step in college football,” Beasley said.
Clowney, now with the Houston Texans, is known for a fantastic first step too, but at 266 pounds, he is a different kind of end compared to the 235-pound Beasley. Beasley is a speed rusher, while Clowney is known for his rare combination of speed and power.
Beasley could have left school early like Clowney to enter the NFL. He said the NFL Draft Advisory Committee gave him a second-round grade, but he opted to return to school to get his degree.
Beasley will find his way onto an NFL roster next year, where he may continue to be compared alongside Clowney for years to come. It remains to be seen who will have the better career.

Law firm that says it represents Arkansas State player wants crosses back on helmets
A law firm wants cross decals back on Arkansas State's helmets.
Red Wolves players had a cross decal on the back of their helmets for the first two games of the season. The cross had the initials of DT Markel Owens and manager Barry Weyer on each side after Owens was shot and killed in an attempted robbery in January and Weyer died in a car crash in June.
However, the school removed the crosses after a complaint following the team's game against Tennessee on September 6. Now, a firm which says it represents an unidentified player who fears punishment, is wanting the crosses back on the helmets.
The Liberty Institute wants the crosses back on the helmets by Wednesday.
“ASU’s actions in defacing the students’ memorial stickers to remove their religious viewpoint is illegal viewpoint discrimination against the students’ free speech,” Hiram Sasser, director of litigation for Liberty Institute told Fox News.
But as we said when the school first announced the stickers were being removed from the helmets, this isn't simply a players' rights issue. Since Arkansas State is a public university, the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution is applicable here. It's what the university cited after it had removed the stickers based off the counsel of its lawyers. If the stickers were undoubtedly constitutional, the university would not have taken the action it did after receiving the complaint.
The school should never have used a religious symbol in the first place as a memorial helmet decal. The debate is the same whether it's a cross, six-point star or a Tao symbol. A publicly-funded university can't give off the impression that it is promoting one belief system or another, even if a religious endorsement is clearly not the football team's intent.
And the cross's presence is now causing legal wrangling that wouldn't have existed if the decal was a circle or square with the two sets of initials. Common sense and constitutional awareness should have prevailed before the season began and Owens and Weyer could have been remembered appropriately without a side circus of legal threats.

West Virginia CB Daryl Worley suspended indefinitely
West Virginia sophomore CB Daryl Worley has been suspended indefinitely.
The school announced his suspension Monday evening. Worley has been an important player for the West Virginia defense through the first three games of the season. He has 17 tackles, third-best on the team, and has two interceptions. One was Saturday against Maryland and the other came in the first game of the season against Alabama.
His suspension comes at an inopportune time for the Mountaineers as well. They host Oklahoma and QB Trevor Knight on Saturday. According to WVSports.com, Ishmael Banks could start in Worley's place. Banks was suspended for the first three games of the season. In August, coach Dana Holgorsen said Banks had an academic issue but that the suspension was team imposed.
Worley was a three-star recruit in the class of 2013 according to Rivals. He played in 11 games last season as a freshman and had 45 tackles and an interception.

Arkansas State player pretended to die during bad fake punt attempt at Miami (GIF)
Our guess is that this fake punt play is a one-and-done for Arkansas State.
In the second quarter of the Red Wolves' loss to Miami on Saturday, ASU went for a fake punt. Not only did the play not get the desired result, but Arkansas State's Booker Mays pretended he had died to try to fake out the defender in front of him.
It did not work. However, we're not sure what "works" would mean in this context. Make the defender yell to his teammates for help? Hope all 11 Miami players saw it and stopped playing? Make us all laugh uproariously after the play happens? (If it's the final option, yes, it did work.)
Mays' role wasn't integral to the outcome of the play, though it was by far the most entertaining part of it unless you're a Miami fan. Arkansas State punter Luke Ferguson tossed a, uh, vastly underthrown pass into double coverage. It was intercepted.
When ASU tried the fake, the score was 20-7. The turnover led to a Miami touchdown and a 27-7 lead. The Hurricanes eventually won 41-20. We'll be stunned if this is ever tried again, though the special teams coaches of the teams on Arkansas State's future schedule must be prepared.
