Freaky fumble return helps Oregon beat Utah 51-27

Ohio State runs over Michigan State 49-37 in statement win
Michigan State had no answer for Ohio State’s high-powered offense Saturday night.
Playing in front of a packed house at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, the Buckeyes put up 568 yards and scored on six straight possessions in a statement 49-37 win over the No. 8 Spartans. Now 8-1 and a perfect 5-0 in conference play, the No. 14 Buckeyes are in the driver’s seat in the Big Ten east division and more importantly, could be back in the conversation for the College Football Playoff.
On top of that, the win offers the Buckeyes a bit of revenge for last year's Big Ten title game loss at the hands of the Spartans.
Michigan State actually controlled the game early and had a chance to take a two-touchdown lead late in the first half after a Dontre Wilson fumble gave the Spartans the ball at OSU’s 18-yard line. It appeared that the Spartans would do just that, but a would-be 11-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Langford was called back due to a holding penalty.
After an incomplete pass, Michael Geiger missed a 39-yard field goal and the Buckeyes regained possession. On the next play, quarterback J.T. Barrett connected with Michael Thomas for a 79-yard catch-and-run. Just like that, the game was tied and the Buckeyes ran away with things from there.
Led by Barrett (300 yards passing, 86 yards rushing 5 total TDs) and running back Ezekiel Elliott (154 yards, 2 TDs), the Buckeyes scored on each of their next four possessions, eating up clock and dominating the vaunted MSU defense.
The Spartans did manage to keep things close for much of the third quarter, but the Buckeyes scored twice in a five-minute span to increase their lead from 28-24 to 42-24 early in the fourth quarter. The Ohio State offense was simply too much to handle.
As previously mentioned, the win is paramount for the Buckeyes for multiple reasons. First, with games against Minnesota, Indiana and Michigan left on the schedule, the Buckeyes have a clear path to the Big Ten title game. As long as Urban Meyer’s squad takes care of business in two of those three games, it’ll be on its way to Indianapolis.
With a handful of other teams ranked ahead of it in the College Football Playoff standings losing Saturday (No. 3 Auburn, No. 7 Kansas State, No. 10 Notre Dame and MSU), the Buckeyes could make a significant leap in next week’s rankings. OSU certainly still has work to do to ascend into the top four, but a spot in the Top 10 seems likely.
A win against 7-2 Minnesota next week would also bolster the Buckeyes’ resume. If the Buckeyes and Big Ten west leaders Nebraska win out and meet in the Big Ten title game with 11-1 records, would the winner of that game crack the final four? We’ll just have to wait and see.

TCU demolishes Kansas State, but it still won't be enough to crack CFP top four
A week ago, TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin apologized to his teammates for a poor performance in a one-point victory against West Virginia.
On Saturday, he was celebrating one of the best performances of his career with a career high with 123 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 17 carries and 219 yards passing and another score in 41-20 win against No. 7 Kansas State.
The performance couldn’t have come at a better time as the No. 6 Horned Frogs needed to add yet another signature win to their College Football Playoff resume.
TCU has defeated four ranked teams this season, but it still might not be enough to push the Horned Frogs into the coveted top four.
TCU was already behind No. 5 Alabama, which won in overtime at LSU. No. 3 Auburn lost, which means the Tide probably will slip into the top four leaving the Horned Frogs on the outside looking in, at least for the time being.
Saturday’s win against Kansas State was TCU’s last opportunity for a marquee win. It's final three games are against Kansas, Texas and Iowa State. Of those teams, Texas has the best record at 5-5; the other two teams have five wins combined.
Every other team ahead of the Horned Frogs faces at least one ranked team before the final playoff rankings are decided, which could help or hurt the Horned Frogs depending on the outcomes.
Still, TCU has done everything it can to be considered one of the nation’s top teams and Saturday’s win against Kansas State just accentuated that point.
TCU jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first half and then, on the first possession of the second half, Boykin scrambled for 19 yards, met two defenders at the goal line and flipped head over heels into the end zone. Boykin added a 24-yard touchdown run in fourth quarter and he got lots of rushing help from Aaron Green, who had 18 carries for 171 yards, which included a 65-yard touchdown run.
Even if TCU wins out, it might not make the playoff. It’s clear it needs at least one of the teams ahead of it to lose to find its way in. Still, if TCU falls short, it won’t because the Horned Frogs didn’t make a valiant effort. With the exception of a stunning loss to Baylor, the Horned Frogs have answered every bell.
They just might not get rewarded for it.

Utah's Kaelin Clay drops ball before crossing goal line, Oregon returns fumble for TD (GIFs)
One of the wackiest plays of the year changed the course of Saturday night's Pac-12 showdown between Utah and Oregon.
On a third-down play, Utah quarterback Travis Wilson found wideout Kaelin Clay on a deep slant. The speedy Clay separated himself from the Oregon defenders and ran toward the end zone for what appeared to be a 79-yard touchdown that would give the Utes a 14-0.
There was a problem, however.
Right before Clay crossed the goal line, he inexplicably dropped the ball.
As the Utah players celebrated what appeared to be a touchdown, the ball was picked up by defensive back Erick Dargan near the goal line. In a scramble with a Utah player, Dargan then fumbled and linebacker Joe Walker scooped up the loose ball.
With a convoy of blockers in front of him, the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Walker returned the fumble 100 yards for a Ducks touchdown, capping off a wild play.
Instead of taking a 14-0 lead, the wild sequence of events allowed the fourth-ranked Ducks to tie the ballgame.

Les Miles ate grass in the second half against Alabama (Video)
LSU coach Les Miles still has his eating grass habit.
The coach has admitted to eating grass during games, saying it makes him feel like he's part of the field. Heck, it's such a joke that Miles has filmed a commercial of himself making a grass smoothie.
And during the third quarter against Alabama on Saturday night, Miles did it again. CBS cut away from Miles during a live shot as the coach bent down to pick up some grass off the field. (While we understand there was a play to show, the possibility of Miles eating grass is worth missing a play) But after the sequence, CBS came back and showed us that yes, Miles had indeed put a couple of blades in his mouth.
Never quit being Les, Les.

Watch TCU QB Trevone Boykin go head-over-heels into the end zone (Video)
TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin knew if he wanted to get his team into the College Football Playoff — and earn an invitation to the Heisman ceremony — he’d have to have a big game against No. 7 Kansas State.
Nothing bigger than ignoring personal safety for a touchdown.
Boykin took advantage of strong blocking from his line and scrambled toward the end zone. As two Kansas State defenders tried to block his path, Boykin didn’t slide, he ran right on through and the result was fantastic.
While there’s always that initial fear of injury, Boykin popped right back up and sprinted toward his bench celebrating with every teammate along the way.
The touchdown put TCU up 24-7 early in the third quarter.
Nothing will fire up a team more than watching a quarterback put his body on the line for a great play.

Arizona State's 55-31 win against Notre Dame is first step toward playoff spot
Arizona State’s path to the College Football Playoff just got a lot less bumpy.
The Sun Devils handled its biggest obstacle to date with a 55-31 win against No. 10 Notre Dame to likely put themselves on the doorstep of the Top 6 of the College Football Playoff standings depending on what happens the rest of the college football Saturday.
And while the Arizona State offense was seemingly clicking on all cylinders, it was the much-maligned defense that was the star of the game.
The Sun Devils forced five turnovers, including three in the first half that resulted in three touchdowns. Arizona State was up 31-3 early in the second quarter and had only had the ball for a little more than 7 minutes.
However, Arizona State rested on its 34-10 halftime lead and Notre Dame slowly chipped away at the score during the second half with 21 consecutive points. But when the Sun Devils needed a touchdown, quarterback Taylor Kelly marched his team 75 yards in just over two minutes to give the Sun Devils a 10-point cushion. Defensive back Lloyd Carrington put the exclamation point on the win by intercepting a pass from quarterback Everett Golson, his fourth of the game, and running it back for a 58-yard score.
Arizona State still has three conference games remaining before a possible spot in the Pac-12 title game.
It has to get past Oregon State and Washington State, two teams with losing Pac-12 records, before it faces rival Arizona on the road. If it wins those games, it potentially sets up a date with Oregon for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
It’s a long way to go, but the way Arizona State is currently playing, it has to feel good about its chances.
Last week, Arizona State moved up five spots in the College Football Playoff rankings and figures to keep ascending, especially after No. 3 Auburn lost to Texas A&M, the Tigers second loss of the season, which essentially puts them out of playoff contention.
Arizona State is one of the few teams that controls it own destiny on the path to the inaugural playoff. So far, the Sun Devils have handled that responsibility well.

Florida DT Leon Orr gets on bus back to Gainesville after learning he wouldn't start at Vanderbilt
Well, this is a new one.
After learning he would not be in the starting lineup Saturday night at Vanderbilt, Florida senior defensive tackle Leon Orr opted to get on a bus and return to Gainesville. For real. That’s close to a nine-hour trip.
According to Gatorzone.com, Florida’s official website, Orr “expressed displeasure” when he found out he would not start. Even though it was explained to him that he would “be heavily involved in a game plan featuring an eight-man rotation” of defensive linemen, Orr decided to “leave the team and return to Gainesville on a bus.”
“He was more concerned with starting than being part of the team,” Muschamp said.
Orr, in his fifth year with the program, has played in 37 games during his career, including 10 starts. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Orr has 16 tackles this season.
Coming into this season, Orr tallied a total of 46 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss in his previous three seasons with the program.
The Gators are 4-3 after last weekend’s win over Georgia.

Minnesota coach Jerry Kill showed off his dancing skills after Iowa win (GIF)
Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill had plenty to be happy about after his team dismantled Iowa on Saturday afternoon. The Gophers racked up 429 yards – 291 on the ground – and improved to 7-2 (4-1 Big Ten) in a dominant 51-14 win.
It was a joyous scene in the Minnesota locker room after the game, and Kill let loose and showed off some hilarious dance moves (Full video here).
This is not the first time we’ve seen Kill show off his dancing skills after a win. When the Gophers knocked off Penn State at home last November, Kill pulled out some similar moves.

Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong makes a spectacular one-handed catch for a TD (GIF)
Arizona State jumped out to a big first-quarter lead against Notre Dame thanks in-part to its defense and thanks in-part to a spectacular touchdown catch by receiver Jaelen Strong.
Strong ran a crossing route from the 13-yard line to the end zone and turned just in time to see the pass from quarterback Taylor Kelly. He reached up with his left hand and made a one-handed catch for the score.
He even bobbled it a little bit while trying to secure it, but he had possession heading to the ground.
The score was a result of a fumble by Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson following a sack by Tashon Smallwood. Smallwood picked up the ball and returned it six yards. The touchdown made the score 10-3.
At the end of the first quarter, Arizona State leads 17-3 after turning two Notre Dame turnovers into touchdowns.

Baylor scores 45 unanswered points in 48-14 throttling of Oklahoma
How much did Saturday do to change the perception of Baylor in the College Football Playoff rankings?
After spending the second week of the College Football Playoff rankings as discussion fodder because of a weak nonconference schedule, Baylor scored 45 unanswered points against Oklahoma in a victory that's sure to move the Bears from No. 12 in the rankings.
Now we just have to wait until Tuesday to see how far the win pushes the Bears up.
After trailing 14-3 at the end of the first quarter, quarterback Bryce Petty found wide receiver Corey Coleman for a 33-yard touchdown. Then Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight, who was carted off in the fourth quarter after being tackled awkwardly by three Baylor defenders, threw his lone interception of the day to Baylor linebacker Bryce Hager.
In just 126 seconds, Baylor had a 17-14 lead and the rout was beginning.
While the Bears had five rushing touchdowns, the key to the offense was Petty and the passing game. Namely the connection to Coleman. Coleman torched the Oklahoma secondary for 15 catches and 224 yards, a total that was 58 percent of Petty's 387 passing yards.
It's no surprise, but when Oklahoma was rolling in the first quarter, Knight was playing well. Once the interception to Hager happened, Oklahoma's offense was all sorts of out of sync. On the drive following the pick, Michael Hunnicutt missed a field goal.
And the six drives after the field goal attempt? Four punts and two turnovers on downs while Baylor scored on every drive save for a punt and a clock-killing possession at the end of the game. It was an exceptionally ugly way to give Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops his first back-to-back losses at home since his tenure began in Norman. Two weeks ago, Oklahoma lost to Kansas State 31-30 in Norman.
But back to Baylor's role in the playoff conversation.
While the Sooners started the year ranked in the top five, preseason rankings are meaningless and Oklahoma is simply a power in name only at the moment. Is a road win over a now-three loss Sooner team impressive enough to put the Bears past many one-loss teams it entered the week behind?
Our guess is probably not. Barring any upsets, Baylor will vault ahead of three teams – two-loss Ole Miss, and the losers of Notre Dame-Arizona State and Kansas State-TCU. The Bears will still need some help and repeat this Oklahoma performance against Kansas State in December for a sniff of the four-team field.

Oklahoma's Trevor Knight carted off in fourth quarter of blowout loss to Baylor (GIF)
Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight was carted from the field in the fourth quarter against Baylor on Saturday after he was tackled awkwardly by three Baylor players.
As Knight was being sacked, his head got pinched between two defenders as he was converged upon.
After the hit, Knight moved his hips from side to side and relaxed and extended the fingers in his right hand. He was attended to by Oklahoma trainers and placed on a backboard and taken off the field.
While being taken off, Knight raised his right hand to the crowd. He was replaced by Cody Thomas in the blowout loss. Baylor won the game 48-14.
Knight finished the game 12-27 passing for 146 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also had 13 carries for 46 yards.

The Cardinals play at Boston College on Saturday. Quick is tied for the lead in catches for the Cardinals at 31 and has the most yards on the team with 459 receiving yards. He also has three touchdowns.
However, he's not the Cardinals' main threat in the passing game. DeVante Parker, who has 17 catches is. Parker has only played in Louisville's last two games because of a foot injury and will undoubtedly be even more of a focal point of the passing attack.
Quick was a four-star recruit in the class of 2013 according to Rivals and was the top player in Kentucky and ninth-rated wide receiver overall.
Louisville is also going to be without linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin against Boston College. Mauldin, who has 6.5 sacks and 12 tackles for a loss, has a hamstring injury.

Wacky deflection off defender's foot leads to Georgia Tech interception (GIFs)
A strange sequence of events took place early in the second quarter as NC State tried to take the lead over Georgia Tech.
Trailing 14-13, the Wolfpack faced second and goal from the 5-yard line and quarterback Jacoby Brissett looked to Bryan Underwood on a slant toward the goal line. Tech cornerback Chris Milton was tight in coverage and delivered a hit that caused the ball to pop out. As Milton and Underwood fell to the ground, the ball deflected off Milton’s foot and into the waiting arms of Quayshawn Nealy.
Nealy took off in the other direction and picked up a few blocks. He scampered 71 yards until NC State’s Jaylen Samuels tracked him down from behind. Not only did Samuels save a potential pick six, he actually stripped the ball away from Nealy and the Wolfpack regained possession.
The wackiness didn’t end there. Two plays later, Brissett threw another interception, but this time Tech was able to score as D.J. White took it 38 yards for a score. The pick six increased the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 28-13.

Minnesota's Maxx Williams' toe drag was so good his catch was first called incomplete (GIFs)
Maxx Williams is having himself a heck of a day against Iowa.
Minnesota's sophomore tight end has two touchdowns in the first half, but his best catch of the day was on a pass near the sideline that was originally called incomplete.
If you watch the play at full speed, you think there's no way that Williams got his feet down on the 3rd-and-7 pass attempt. Heck, it looks like he's not even protesting very much when the pass is ruled incomplete.
But watch his left toe on the replays in slow-motion. Williams did an incredible job of somehow keeping his left toe on the ground as he extends to catch the football.
Since you only need to have one foot down in college football for a completion, the incomplete pass call was overturned and Minnesota got a first down.
Through the first 30 minutes of Minnesota's blowout of Iowa, Williams has four catches for 43 yards and the two touchdowns. He now has six touchdowns on the season.
