O'Bannon: NCAA ruling is 'just the beginning'
O'Bannon: NCAA ruling is 'just the beginning'
Stever Spurrier shares his quotable thoughts on the Ed O'Bannon rulling
Steve Spurrier, champion of student-athlete rights (as long as they’re football players), could not let the ruling in the Ed O’Bannon case pass without commenting on it. So, less than 24 hours after a federal judge ruled in favor of a group led by O’Bannon against the NCAA in an antitrust suit, Spurrier came fast and furious with the quotable gems.
Steve Spurrier: "We all thought O'Bannon was going to win didn't we? He had a good case."
— Josh Kendall (@JoshatTheState) August 9, 2014
As part of the ruling, the NCAA and its member institutions would be required to compensate players for the use of their likeness in the amount of at least $5,000. While the NCAA can cap this amount, it can’t be less than the full cost of attendance.
Steve Spurrier: "You can’t use athletes to make millions of dollars and they get nothing. Wait a minute, that’s what we do isn’t it?"
— Josh Kendall (@JoshatTheState) August 9, 2014
Sometimes when Spurrier speaks, his words deserve some old-time Batman cutaways like "BOOM!" or "ZING!" or "OUCH!"
But, of course, he's right. Spurrier has never had any trouble speaking his mind, especially when he feels strongly about something, and no coach has been more vocal about student-athlete rights.
Lucky for us, this is probably just the beginning of Spurrier’s quips considering this ruling will likely be appealed multiple times over before a final resolution is made.

Tennessee unhappy quarterback play through first week of fall camp
Tennessee’s passing game, which ranked 13th in the 14-team SEC last season, didn't get much better in the offseason.
Coach Butch Jones lamented Friday about the inconsistent play of his quarterbacks Justin Worley, Joshua Dobbs and Nathan Peterman, and noted that if that position didn’t get better, it wouldn't spell good things for the Vols during the season.
“We're not playing winning football at that position right now,” Jones said. “I'm always going to be brutally honest with you, and those three individuals need to step up. It's just an overall consistency in performance.”
Quarterbacking plagued the Vols last season. Worley, Dobbs and Peterman all started one game last year and combined to throw 17 interceptions to just 12 touchdown passes. The quarterbacking corps were full of inconsistency, injury and just downright bad play.
But the future was supposed to be promising, especially since Worley and Dobbs spent part of the offseason training with quarterback coach George Whitfield, who is famously known for turning Johnny Manziel from a nonstarter into a Heisman winner.
No such fortune for the Vols’ quarterbacks who all struggled with consistency through the first week of fall camp. Jones said he counted 62 incompletions due to poor throws and noted that good teams have just “18 to 20 on the ground.”
“I want them to come out and execute the offense with a level of consistency where we're making what I call the pitch-and-catch throws, the easy completions,” offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian said. ''We came out today and had a good day, but again, if nothing else, that's an illustration of the consistency that we need.
“It's not good enough to have a subpar day yesterday and then come out today and have a great day. We need to perform at a high level day in and day out if we're going to be a great quarterback group.”
In theory, quarterback should be a position of strength for the Vols because they’re returning players. As a team, Tennessee is undergoing a major overhaul this season with the Vols replacing almost half of their squad from a year ago. They signed 32 players, including 14 that enrolled early. Jones knew there would be some bumps in the road, but he was hoping it wouldn’t be from players that had already been in the program.
Whoever does start will have some fine talent with which to work. Freshman receiver Josh Malone impressed in the spring game with six catches for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Marquez North added five catches and 106 yards. Junior college transfer Von Pearson also showed some big-play ability during spring ball.
Freshman running back Jalen Hurd had 93 yards and a touchdown on just 12 touches during the spring game and Jones noted during SEC media days that he’s become even more committed in the weight room.
But all of this talent could become moot if Tennessee doesn’t find someone who can consistently distribute the ball.
“Efficiency is what we're hunting — and we're not efficient right now at that position,” Jones said. “We're going to go back, we're going to refine it. But our passing game needs to take monumental strides the next couple of days and moving forward.”

Texas' first practice in pads was full of hard hits (Video)
With all the news of players being suspended and dismissed at Texas over the last few weeks, I’m sure the Longhorns were chomping at the bit to finally strap on the pads and get to work in Charlie Strong’s first preseason camp at Texas.
Based on this video from the first day in full pads Friday, the team is adopting a no-nonsense personality reminiscent of its new head coach.
Strong has been working hard to establish a strong foundation and a renewed identity for the program. He wants his players to respect the history of the program and has been holding them to a higher standard.
Strong has taken away some of the staples of Texas football, including the Longhorn logo from the team’s white helmets as you can see in the video. He wants his players to work hard to “earn” the logos back.
It looks like the team is buying in to Strong’s approach.

BYU receiver Nick Kurtz to miss 6-8 weeks with foot injury
BYU has high expectations for junior college transfer Nick Kurtz in 2014, but the Cougars will have to wait a little longer than expected before seeing him in action.
The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that Kurtz, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound wide receiver, will be out 6-8 weeks due to a stress fracture in his left foot. BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced the news following the Cougars’ scrimmage Saturday morning. Per the Tribune, Kurtz was seen at the scrimmage in a walking boot.
Despite Kurtz’s injury, Mendenhall was quick to point out his team’s depth at that position.
“Luckily, we have depth at receiver at this point,” Mendenhall said. “But Nick Kurtz was doing a really nice job.”
If Kurtz were to miss six weeks, he’d be out in BYU’s games against Connecticut, Texas, Houston and Virginia. In Kurtz’s absence, receivers like Devon Blackmon, Ross Apo and Kurt Henderson will need to step up.
Kurtz was highly sought after as a junior college recruit coming out of Grossmont College in El Cajon, Calif. He was rated four stars by Rivals and was considered to be the No. 22 overall junior college player in the country. He caught 18 touchdowns in two seasons at Grossmont and was expected to take over as a starter for the Cougars.
He chose BYU over offers from programs like Kansas State, LSU, Oregon, Texas Tech and USC.

VOD: Missouri players 'Jump On It' before practice
There might be a lot of question marks surrounding Missouri football right now, but their execution of the “Apache” dance is not one of them.
Prior to Friday’s initial run to start practice, some players, notably the quarterbacks and kickers, performed the choreography to Sugarhill Gang’s “Apache (Jump On It).”
And it was well done.
The precision of the dance moves is remarkable considering the song came out in 1981, long before any of these Missouri players were born. We can only hope off camera coach Gary Pinkel was getting his hip thrusts in as well.

Former Washington DE Josh Shirley transfers to UNLV, eligible immediately
Over a month after deciding to leave Washington, Josh Shirley has found a landing spot for the 2014 season.
Shirley, a fifth-year senior defensive end, will suit up for UNLV and is eligible immediately. The Rebels confirmed the move on Friday.
New #UNLVFB DE Josh Shirley took the field today. Washington transfer is immediately eligible. 18 career sacks. http://ift.tt/1A3iRv7
— Mark Wallington (@UNLVFBSID) August 8, 2014
"We think Josh will help us on the defensive line," UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck said. "Our people did a good job getting him admitted to graduate school and getting him out here today. We appreciate everyone's efforts and I think it shows a good spirit of cooperation on our campus.”
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Shirley registered 74 tackles, 25 tackles for loss and 18 sacks in 38 total games at Washington. A native of Fontana, Calif., Shirley was a four-star recruit who originally signed with UCLA out of high school. He registered 8.5 sacks as a redshirt freshman for the Huskies, but his production and playing time decreased as his career went on.
“I’m going to try to benefit the team any way I can,” Shirley said.
Shirley graduated from Washington, so he utilized the NCAA graduate transfer rule for his final year of eligibility. Hauck is pleased to add a player with Shirley’s experience onto the Rebels’ defensive line.
“He's a veteran who has played a lot of games and it's always a good thing to not have to rely on freshmen. He's going to give us a boost," Hauck said.
UNLV, who went 7-5 in 2013, is coming off its first winning season and bowl appearance since 2000. A low APR score initially meant that the Rebels would not be eligible for postseason play in 2014, but a recalculation of the program’s APR score in late June overturned that ruling.

Baylor WR Clay Fuller out 6-8 weeks with broken clavicle
One of Baylor’s top returning wide receivers will be out of action for a significant portion of time.
Senior Clay Fuller will reportedly miss at least six weeks due to a fractured clavicle he suffered while making a diving catch during practice Thursday. He could be out as long as eight weeks.
Baylor head coach Art Briles said that he hopes Fuller will be able to return by the Big 12 opener at Iowa State on September 27. In that scenario, Fuller would miss the Bears’ three non-conference games against SMU, Northwestern State and Buffalo. BU has a bye the weekend of September 20, which will allow Fuller to have an extra week to heal without missing a game.
The recently-engaged Fuller told reporters Saturday that he won’t have surgery and was advised by doctors to let it heal.

Fuller says he was running on a deep ball and dove. Knew right away because he broke his left clavicle in HS. This injury is his right.

Fuller, a 27-year-old who joined the Bears after playing six seasons of minor league baseball, was fifth on the Bears in 2013 with 32 catches for 512 yards and three touchdowns. He was also was a candidate to return kicks for the Bears.

Missouri's Evan Boehm took a football to the groin (Video)
It’s not easy being an offensive lineman. The guys on the line do all the dirty work and get none of the hype like the skill position players. Also, during practice, linemen have to keep a keen eye out for flying footballs – just ask Missouri’s Evan Boehm.
While the Tigers were going through a drill, Boehm, the team’s starting center, seemed to get lost in thought as backup center Brad McNulty took his rep. When McNulty went to snap the ball to a staff member, Boehm, a junior, got in the way, and the ball hit him in a place where no man wants to be hit.
The staff member in the black t-shirt tried to get Boehm, a two-year starter, out of the way, but it was too late.
While we’re not ruling out that McNulty might have been trying to sabotage the guy directly above him on the depth chart, it was probably an honest mistake. Boehm will probably pay closer attention to the drill in the future.

Michigan wideout Csont'e York facing three assault charges
Michigan head coach Brady Hoke announced last weekend that wide receiver Csont’e York was suspended from the team but did not offer specifics. A week later, news of York’s transgressions have emerged.
According to Mlive.com, York will be charged with three counts of assault stemming from an incident that occurred on July 18. Ann Arbor police have not provided details of the incident, but records show that York will be charged with “one count of aggravated assault and two counts of assault or assault and battery,” all misdemeanors.
Hoke said that York’s suspension was indefinite. He did not report for preaseason camp with the rest of the team Sunday.
“Csont’e York is suspended indefinitely for failing to meet team standards and will not report for fall camp," Hoke said in a statement when the suspension was announced. "We demand that every person in our program represent the University of Michigan and the Michigan football program the right way on and off the field. When people fall short of that, there are consequences.”
The 6-foot-3, 191-pound York saw action in just one game last year as a true freshman, but was expected to be in the miss at wide receiver in 2014. A native of Harper Woods, Mich., York was a three-star recruit in the Wolverines’ 2013 class. He picked Michigan over other offers from Cincinnati, Illinois and Syracuse.

Nebraska starting linebacker Michael Rose injures knee
The hits keep coming for Nebraska’s defense.
Per the Omaha World-Herald, sophomore linebacker Michael Rose posted on Instagram Friday night that he injured his knee, and it appears to be serious. Though the program has yet to acknowledge the injury, Rose, who started seven games last season, wrote in a comment that he “tore (his) ACL” and “possibly” injured his “MCL and cartilage” as well. He added that he’d find out more “tomorrow,” as he’ll likely undergo an MRI Saturday to get a true assessment of his injury.
Rose’s Instagram post, in full, reads:
I'm hurting... I'm not gonna lie. I'm hurting bad. So much work out in this off season to get my weight down and body fat to prove to people I can be an every down linebacker. A lot of film study critiquing myself and trying to learn techniques from some of the best linebackers to ever play on any level. It's hard right now for me. I can barely express how I feel right now cause I'm numb to it. It won't hit me until I see my boys, my brothers, my teammates run out on that field aug 30th against FAU. It won't hit me till I see my boy@ameerguapo and @afro_thunder80 put up touchdown after touchdown on defenses this year. It won't hit me until my man @zaireanderson and @vrvj98and randy lead the way to a top 10 defense. It's gonna be a long process back but I got a lot of good people on my side. I'm coming back stronger than ever. Trust and believe that!! Send prayers up to the man above for me but don't send me sympathy !! I will be back better than ever before !! #GBR #HUSKERNATION
Rose’s injury is the third loss this week for the Huskers’ defense. The program announced Friday that sophomore safety LeRoy Alexander will be suspended for the entire 2014 season. Additionally, junior cornerback Charles Jackson injured his left knee earlier in the week and will miss the season after undergoing surgery.
Rose was expected to be the team’s full-time starter at middle linebacker moving forward. As a redshirt freshman in 2013, he played in all 12 games and after starting the season in a reserve role, he moved into the starting lineup. In total, Rose registered 66 tackles – a record for a Nebraska freshman.
The 5-foot-11, 240-pound Rose, a native of Kansas City, Mo., was a three-star recruit in the class of 2012.
