Former South Carolina QB Stephen Garcia says SEC players are often paid for autographs

Former South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia is familiar with the world of college football, and in particular, the SEC. And when asked about players being compensated for autographs – one of the hotter issues in the sport – Garcia, who played for the Gamecocks from 2007-11, said autograph collectors approached players frequently and players often accepted money.

“I saw it all day every day, to be honest with you,” Garcia said in an interview with Charlotte radio station WFNZ-AM, per the Post and Courier. “I wish they would have come to me, but they thought of me as some rich white kid, so I didn’t get the benefits from that. But I saw it firsthand with a lot of players, and talking to other guys. I’m friends with a lot of guys around the SEC, and some of the stories they tell me, it makes the Todd Gurley thing seem insignificant by a long shot.”

Of course, Garcia is referencing the suspension and ongoing investigation into Gurley, Georgia’s star running back. The junior allegedly accepted cash for signing memorabilia. While some reports have indicated that Gurley accepted $400, Garcia said he heard of a player accepting “about $160,000” over the course of a season.

“I’m going to go out on a limb and say it doesn’t happen at Vanderbilt, and maybe not Kentucky either,” Garcia said. “Since day one, compliance and coaches set rules for us. We know what to do and what not to do.”

In Gurley’s case, Georgia officials met with the NCAA Thursday but there is no new update on his status at this time.

Regarding Todd Gurley's eligibility, the NCAA is continuing to work with Georgia and is awaiting the school's request for reinstatement.

Michigan fan gives passionate pre-game speech at tailgate (Video)

Things have been tough for the Michigan football program this season. Head coach Brady Hoke and athletic director Dave Brandon are on the hot seat and heading into last weekend’s matchup with Penn State, the Wolverines struggled to a 2-4 start.

The team managed to pull out an 18-13 win over the Nittany Lions at home, but if the team heard this impassioned speech from a fan, the margin of victory would have been a whole lot greater.

This speech really has everything you need. With a beer in hand, this guy preaches passion, togetherness, brotherhood and pride in the university.

The Wolverines are off this week, but Hoke may want to take some notes from this guy for his pre-game speech before the team’s next game – a road contest with in-state rival Michigan State.

Report: 2,000+ pieces of signed Jameis Winston memorabilia on authentication site

The number of Jameis Winston autographs on an authentication website keeps increasing.

After hundreds of items signed by the Florida State QB were found on the James Spence Authentication website, ESPN.com reports that there are more than 2,000 items on the site signed by Winston. ESPN said it did an "in-depth" search of the site.

From ESPN.com:

James Spence, the authentication company's owner, told ESPN on Thursday he will not reveal the identity or identities of the customers who submitted the signed Winston items for authentication. Spence also won't verify the number of items because he says his database is not searchable by name.

But Spence does stand by his company's opinion that the signatures are real. Spence also said that no one at his company has any knowledge of whether the clients who submitted the Winston items paid the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback for his signatures.

Earlier this week, Florida State said it was investigation if Winston had signed memorabilia for money. Georgia RB Todd Gurley is currently suspended indefiniltey amidst reports that he received money for his signature.

Spence told ESPN that he hadn't heard from Florida State.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday that Winston hasn't been paid for his autograph. Some of the items on the Spence site are consecutively numbered, meaning they were likely submitted together.

"We feel very good," Fisher said via Warchant.com. "Talked to him and I know people have talked to the owners of the company and different people and from what I understand, we'll see. But I'm not concerned."

Fisher also noted Winston's propensity for signing items before and after baseball games.

"Never taken a dime," he also said said. "He's signed thousands of things. The guy sits for an hour-and-a-half before a baseball game and signs, an hour-and-a-half after a baseball game. I mean, there are thousands of things out there with his name on there. He is very accommodating."

Miss St. coach Dan Mullen speaks out against websites that endorse hiring or firing coaches

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen knows the ebbs and flows of the coaching profession as well as anyone, and that’s probably why he’s not impressed by a couple new websites promoting him as the next Florida coach.

In fact, Mullen told “Head to Head Radio” in Mississippi on Wednesday that it angers him more than anything.

"It's really an insult to coaches and to players at institutions," Mullen said. "Whether they're putting websites out to hire you or fire you or do all these different things, I don't think that does any good for anybody.”

"At the end of every season, there are coaching changes, but people put so much in. You're so committed, yourself, your family, your team, everybody's so committed, that I think it's insulting to the job everybody does.

"I know there are fans that like that stuff. I don't think that stuff is great. People can have their opinions and call in on shows, but to take it that far, I don't think it's good for anybody on either side of the fence."

Florida coach Will Muschamp has been on the hot seat for the past two seasons and things don’t appear to be getting any better, especially as Florida keeps struggling and Mullen, a former Florida assistant, has helped Mississippi State ascend to the No. 1 ranking.

But Mullen can relate to the fire Muschamp is under, he went through something similar a year ago.

"I know there was a website here at Mississippi State to fire Dan Mullen last year. Now there's probably one to keep me here," he said.

Mullen went on to note that Muschamp is a good coach who is trying everything he can to make the Florida program successful and that it’s unfair for fans to say Muschamp is doing anything less.

"Everybody wants to win. Everybody's giving their best effort out there,” Mullen said. “Fans are entitled to their opinion, and they get that stuff and put that stuff out there, but they need to know I've never met a coach that's not going to give everything he has.

"You should respect and appreciate how much everybody in every program puts in to what's going on on the field."

And while fans might want Mullen to return to Florida, Mullen said he’s not looking to leave Starkville any time soon.

"One, both my kids are born here. I love Mississippi State. I've loved being here,” he said. “I love the community. I love the state. I have a great administration. They've given us what we need to build a successful program. I think we've built that program. We love being here. That's No. 1."

Florida State DE Chris Casher being sued by lawyer

The former lawyer of Florida State defensive end Chris Casher is suing him for non-payment of services rendered while he was defending Casher during his school code of conduct hearing.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Casher agreed to pay Tallahassee-based attorney Adam Ellis $2,500 for his representation during the May hearing, but the firm has received no money from Casher and that attempts to reach Casher or his father have been unsuccessful.

"Morris Parnell & Ellis provided legal services as agreed and represented you at the hearing," attorney Adam Ellis wrote to Casher in July, according to The Democrat. "The hearing was a success and you were not suspended or expelled from school, and you will be permitted to continue playing on the football team."

Casher and FSU cornerback Ronald Darby faced student conduct code violations for their roles in the alleged sexual assault involving quarterback Jameis Winston.

While the results of the hearing are unknown, the Wall Street Journal reported that Casher did receive one year of probation after being found responsible for two violations of the school's conduct code: acts that invade the privacy of another person and the recording of images without consent.

Casher missed the first game of the season because of academic issues, but has played in ever game since.

Ohio State student tackled by assistant coach on field fined $100, faces counseling

The Ohio State student that ran onto the field and was tackled by a Buckeyes assistant will be fined $100 for his actions.

According to The Lantern, Anthony Wunder, a 21-year-old fourth-year student studying mechanical engineering, appeared in court Thursday morning. He faced up to 30 days in jail and a $250 fine on a criminal trespassing charge, but due to his “age and lack of criminal history,” Wunder will pay a $100 fine while also spending “three to nine months in counseling.”

The incident occurred Sept. 27 when the Buckeyes hosted Cincinnati. Wunder ran onto the field during the second quarter and was promptly tackled to the ground by OSU assistant strength and conditioning coach Anthony Schlegel. Video of the incident subsequently went viral.

“He’s taken responsibility for his actions,” said Mark C. Collins, Wunder’s attorney. “He’s going to commit himself to whatever’s required of him.”

Wunder apologized to both his family and the Evans Scholars Program – the program that has provided him a full academic scholarship during his time at Ohio State.

“I made a mistake, and it was very poor judgment,” Wunder said.

The incident jeopardized Wunder’s standing with the program, but “as long as he complies with the scholars group,” he will not lose his scholarship. However, he will lose his housing privileges and won’t be allowed to “participate in Evans Scholars activities” while the disciplinary process plays out.

“That is a lot of punishment in and of itself,” Collins said. “It’s a close-knit group, and he’s very tied to that group and he’s proud of that. He’s embarrassed by any attention he’s drawn to the Evans and any misconceptions out there.”

As far as being slammed to the ground by Schlegel, Collins said Wunder will not pursue legal action against the coach.

“As far as we’re concerned, this case is over,” Collins said.

USC to wear metallic helmets with chrome facemasks for homecoming (Photo)

USC is going with a brand new helmet for Saturday’s homecoming contest against Colorado.

The program unveiled these awesome metallic helmets with chrome facemasks on Twitter on Wednesday. It’s a fresh take on the Trojans’ classic helmets.

Even traditionalists can appreciate this helmet, especially if it's worn on an occasional basis. It still maintains the long-standing USC look. The logo is unchanged and the facemask is still gray – it’s just shiny now!

Coming off a road win over No. 10 Arizona, the 4-2 Trojans, now ranked No. 22, will look to get a winning streak going against the 2-4 Buffs – a team coming off back-to-back close conference losses to Cal (59-56 in 2OT) and Oregon State (36-31).

The game will kick off at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at 6:00 p.m. ET.

CB Paris Head and RB Brian Kimbrow leave Vanderbilt football team

Vanderbilt is down two players after CB Paris Head and RB Brian Kimbrow have left the team.

Kimbrow has been suspended since September 22 for conduct detrimental to the team. When he was suspended, Mason declined to reveal the reason but said that one player was not bigger than the team.

"He has not been with us for a month (for practices or team activities), but he has come to say hello and ask for some advice on some things," " Mason said Wednesday via The Tennesseean.

Head simply chose to focus on school, Mason said, citing philosophical differences.

"Paris came here under one coach and one philosophy (James Franklin) and inherited another philosophy, so that paradigm shift was a little tough on him," Mason said. "He has chosen just to pursue his degree. There were no conduct issues or anything else with Paris. It was his decision, but we just came to a mutual understanding when we talked about it after the Georgia game (on Oct. 4)."

Kimbrow was productive as a rusher in his first two seasons. He had 66 carries for 413 yards in 2012 and 81 carries for 341 yards in 2013. This season, he had one carry for -6 yards.

Head, a sophomore, started three games for Vanderbilt in his career. He's played in four games this season and has 11 total tackles.

Indiana will likely start third-string quarterback Zander Diamont vs. Michigan State

Indiana’s tough homecoming matchup against No. 8 Michigan State (5-1) Saturday just got tougher.

According to the Indianapolis Star, the Hoosiers (3-3) will be down to their third-string quarterback – true freshman Zander Diamont – against the Spartans. The team’s second-stringer, true freshman Chris Covington, won’t play for undisclosed reasons. Covington, who came on in relief of injured starter Nate Sudfeld against Iowa last weekend, was listed as the starter on IU’s depth chart Tuesday, but his mother told the Star that her son would not play against the Spartans.

The Indiana coaching staff hoped to redshirt Diamont, a 6-foot-1, 175-pounder from Los Angeles, but he appears to be the best option for the Hoosiers this weekend.

The 6-foot-2, 221-pound Covington, a native of Chicago, missed a few practices last month due to a knee injury but IU head coach Kevin Wilson didn’t offer any answers about an injury for Covington on Wednesday. Wilson also opted not to publically name a starter.

Diamont’s high school coach said that “all signs point to him playing,” and Wilson alluded to the possibility of both Covington and Diamont playing during his Monday press conference.

“Zander is a good player, throws well, runs well," Wilson said Monday. "He's a smaller guy. You've got two freshmen, so you've just got to be careful of what you ask those guys. When you have freshmen, you have some mistakes, and they are going to be challenged, but the defense is going to do everything they can to make his role uncomfortable."

Diamont, who enrolled at IU in January in order to participate in spring practice, threw for 3,501 yards and 47 touchdowns as a high school senior.

Hoosiers offensive coordinator Kevin Johns said that Diamont, a three-star recruit in the 2014 class, has “a little Johnny Manziel in him.”

He’ll have to unleash his inner-Manziel if he wants to help the Hoosiers pull off the upset.

TCU QB Trevone Boykin will play with cast on left wrist against Oklahoma State

TCU QB Trevone Boykin sufferd a left wrist injury against Baylor but he's going to play against Oklahoma State with a cast on it.

Boykin throws right-handed and has been practicing all week according to coach Gary Patterson.

"He's been practicing since Sunday. He's been awesome. I really haven't noticed anything (about him being hurt)," Patterson said via PurpleMenace.com. "[Former TCU LB] Tank Carder had the same thing on a Wednesday or Thursday and still played. It's about tolerating, but he wasn't even wearing a soft cast today. He will for the ball game, but it's about him managing it. He's a tough kid."

Earlier in the week, a report emerged that Boykin had surgery on his left wrist and would miss 4-6 weeks. TCU quickly debunked the surgery report, but confirmed an injury Wednesday.

Boykin has been one of the best QBs in the Big 12 this season. He's thrown for 1.463 yards, 11 touchdowns and two interceptions. If he's somehow unable to play, TCU's backup QB is Matt Joeckel, a transfer from Texas A&M. Joeckel started Texas A&M's 2013 season-opener after Johnny Manziel was suspended for a half game.

Mark Richt doesn't anticipate change in Todd Gurley's status for Arkansas game

Georgia fans might have gotten some false hope about finding out a quick decision about RB Todd Gurley's eligibility status on Wednesday.

Coach Mark Richt said Wednesday that the team expected to know about Gurley's status before the Bulldogs left for Saturday's game against Arkansas.

"If we know he's not going to play, he won't travel. I don't know if that answers your question. If we know he's able to play, he'll travel and if he's not able, he won't," Richt said via UGASports.com. "He's been practicing, getting some reps. But until we know something for sure one way or another … again, I'll just go back to the beginning, if he's able to play, he'll travel, if he's not he won't travel."

Richt then said "I think so" when asked if he would know Gurley's status by the time the team leaves for Arkansas.

However, that answer, according to UGA officials, was about the Arkansas game specifically and not a status update from the NCAA regarding Gurley's suspension amidst allegations that he received money for signing autographs.

From UGASports.com:

Shortly thereafter, Georgia associate athletic director and sports information director Claude Felton informed the beat writers that Richt was referring solely to the question about when he would know Gurley would travel with the team, and was not referring to when Georgia might receive an answer from the NCAA.

Richt tweeted Friday morning that he doesn't anticipate Gurley's status to change before the Arkansas game.

I will try to clear up Todd's status. "We will let you know if his status changes. Not anticipating it to change this week."

— Mark Richt (@MarkRicht) October 16, 2014

J.J. Green, Georgia's second-leading rusher in 2013, is back at running back this week. Green moved to safety for the 2014 season because of Georgia's riches at RB, but he's back in the offensive backfield as Gurley's status for the weekend is still in doubt and RB Keith Marshall looks unlikely to play with a knee injury. Without either RB, freshman Nick Chubb is likely to get his second straight start at Arkansas.

Last season, Green ran for 384 yards and three touchdowns. But as long as he's at RB, he's probably not going to play both offense and defense.

"It would be tough to do. It's possible," Richt said. "He certainly hasn't forgotten everything on defense but he hasn't been repping it and I don't know how much faith [defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt] would have, but circumstances could dictate that. I think he could do it."
