Kent State will wear No. 54 on helmets to honor fallen teammate Jason Bitsko
A day after the tragic death of starting center Jason Bitsko, the Kent State players have already come up with a way to honor their fallen teammate.
Head coach Paul Haynes said Thursday that Bitsko’s teammates will wear his number, No. 54, on the side of their helmets through the season.
— Kent State Athletics (@KSUAthletics) August 20, 2014
“Jason Bitsko was not just a Golden Flash, he was a son, he was a brother, he was a mentor, he was a friend,” Haynes said.
After not showing up for practice Wednesday morning, Bitsko, a redshirt junior from Huber Heights, Ohio, was “found unresponsive in his bedroom” by his roommate around 9 a.m. Police believe the cause of death to be “an undetermined medical issue.” He was 21 years old.
"Kent State University and the entire Kent community mourns his passing," Kent State athletic director Joel Nielsen said in a statement Wednesday. "We are heartbroken by the news of Jason's death. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, teammates and everyone whose lives he touched."
The program recently honored Bitsko with an award for “exemplifying hard work and dedication beyond the call of duty.”
Additionally, memorials have been popping around campus to honor Bitsko.

Bitsko’s family wants to make sure that the loss of their son can have a positive impact on another member of the Golden Flashes. According to August Fagerstrom of Ohio.com, Bitsko’s father “wanted to make sure Jason’s scholarship went to a walk-on.”
Haynes and his wife visited Bitsko's family at the hospital yesterday. The father wanted to make sure Jason's scholarship went to a walk-on.

South Carolina is installing massive Steve Spurrier banner outside Williams-Brice Stadium (Photos)
When Texas A&M arrives at South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium for next Thursday night’s season opener, the Aggies will be greeted by Gamecocks’ head coach Steve Spurrier.
No, the Ol’ Ball Coach will not be personally waiting outside the stadium when A&M’s team bus arrives. Instead, an enormous Spurrier banner will be hung up on the side of Williams-Brice.
This thing is massive. Take a look.

Iman Marshall asks fans on Twitter to decide his final visit between Oklahoma and Texas
This is an idea that sounds really good when you don't consider the possible drawbacks.
Iman Marshall, a five-star DB recruit according to Rivals, wants to take six official visits. However, NCAA regulations only permit five. Notre Dame, Florida State, LSU and Michigan are set and the fifth visit is between Oklahoma and Texas. So Marshall decided to enlist the help of fans on Twitter to decide his fifth visit.
Had To Put A Twist To It #HereYouGo http://ift.tt/1mqtQH2
— Biggie (@iman_marshall8) August 21, 2014
We know how vicious fans can be on social media, so while Marshall may have good intentions, he's in a spot where he's opening himself up for a lot of trash talk, both towards himself and Texas and Oklahoma from the rival fanbases.
There's a slight chance that Marshall wants to find out what fans would turn heel against the other school the quickest and make his decision based on that but it seems like an unsound way of doing things. Judging a school by its fans on social media isn't exactly fair.
Our guess? Marshall is wanting to see how much of an impact he can make with the announcement and is fishing for mentions and attention. At least that's what we hope, anyway. Rabid fans who tweet recruits don't need tangible evidence that they can help sway the college decisions of a recruit in a positive manner.
Marshall is the No. 1 DB in the country according to Rivals and the No. 3 prospect in the class of 2015.

Steve Spurrier says Mike Davis could miss South Carolina's season opener
South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier voiced some concern Wednesday about the status of star running back Mike Davis for the Gamecocks’ season opener against Texas A&M next Thursday.
“Mike Davis has been hurt, he hasn’t practiced all week,” Spurrier said, per The State . “I don’t know if he’d even be able to start or not. But we got Brandon Wilds, he’s ready to go. Shon Carson, Dave Williams, so we’re in good shape there.”
Running backs coach Everette Sands told The State he didn’t believe Davis’ injury, which occurred Saturday, was serious, but Spurrier made it sound like Davis may be limited for the ninth-ranked Gamecocks.
“He hasn’t practiced much, so we’ll see how much he’s ready to play for the game,” Spurrier said.
If Davis is limited or can’t go, the guys Spurrier mentioned – Wilds, Carson and Williams – should be able to fill the void. Carson and Wilds, both juniors, have seen significant touches in reserve roles for the Gamecocks throughout their careers. Williams, a well-regarded redshirt freshman from Philadelphia, is also ready to see his first game action.
Davis’ ailment has been as a “rib injury” and the junior, who rushed for 1,183 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, took to Twitter to quell the concerns of the South Carolina fanbase.

Elsewhere with the Gamecocks’ offense, starting guard Mike Matulis suffered a knee injury in last Saturday’s scrimmage. The injury, according to GamecockCentral.com, is being “labeled as a severe sprain,” but it could “turn out to be season-ending” when the knee is re-evaluated in the coming weeks.
The injury is a tough break for Matulis, a redshirt junior. He missed the second half of 2012 and all of 2013 with shoulder injuries. He started five games as a true freshman at tackle in 2011 and five more in 2012 before his injury.

Ohio State retails expect to take a hit from No. 5 jersey sales
No one wants the jersey of an injured player.
According to the Columbus Dispatch, Ohio State jersey retailers expect to take a significant hit this season because they have too many No. 5 jerseys and not enough people who want to buy them.
Ohio State announced earlier this week that quarterback Braxton Miller would miss the season after suffering an injury to his throwing shoulder. Even though Miller said he’d be back next season, no one wants to pony up the money in case that doesn’t work out.
“People want the numbers that are on the field, typically,” Kelly Dawes, owner of College Traditions near Ohio Stadium told the paper. “We felt it. Everybody who came in yesterday, they were all taking about” Miller’s season-ending shoulder injury.
Even though the jerseys don’t have Miller’s name on them — that’s against NCAA rules — most people associate that number with the star quarterback and not freshman linebacker Raekwon McMillan, who also wears that jersey.
Dawes told the paper the store has 1,000 No. 5 jerseys that sell for $90 - $140 each. If they don’t sell, that means the store could be missing out on nearly $100,000 in revenue.
Dawes said she spoke to Nike on Wednesday and asked if it could produce and send jerseys with the numbers 16, for new starting quarterback J.T. Barrett, or 97 for star sophomore defensive end Joey Bosa.
“We spoke with Nike yesterday about maybe coming out with No. 97 or No. 16,” Dawes told the paper. “ Whether they can get that done in time, I don’t know.”
But in the end, Dawes said her company would sit on the No. 5 jerseys that aren’t sold and hope that Miller comes back next season and that Ohio State doesn’t change its jersey design in 2015.

ROTOTD: Will Muschamp's doppelganger spotted in Tallahassee
Welcome to our Dr. Saturday feature titled "Random offseason tweet of the day." With real games just days away, coaches and players are still tweeting about non-football-related things as the season approaches. In this space, we'll try to find the funniest and goofiest tweets of the day. If you see something, don't hesitate to send it to us.
Will Muschamp was spotted working at a Mellow Mushroom in Tallahassee on Wednesday night — well at least it was someone who looked like Muschamp.
Brendan Sonnone, who writes about Florida State for the Orlando Sentinel, tweeted out this gem of Muschamp’s doppelganger serving up some tasty pizza.

That’s not a bad likeness. The guy even has the right colored shirt on.
Of course this wasn’t really Muschamp, but go ahead and start the “Jobs Will Muschamp will have after he’s fired” jokes anyway.
