Utah State QB Chuckie Keeton likely out for the season with knee injury

Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton stands on the sidelines after injuring his leg against Wake Forest during an NCAA football game, Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, in Logan, Utah. (AP Photo/Eli Lucero) Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton will likely miss the rest of the season with an injury to his surgically repaired left knee.

Keeton was injured during the second quarter of the Sept. 13 game against Wake Forest and hasn’t played since. Coach Matt Wells said at the time he was hopeful to get Keeton back for this weekend's game against BYU, but at this time it appears unlikely.

“Chuckie’s health is our top priority and he has not been cleared to play by our medical staff,” Wells said. “We will continue to monitor his progress throughout the fall, but given his current condition it is unlikely that he will play in any games in the foreseeable future.”

Keeton originally suffered a torn MCL and torn ACL against BYU last October. The injuries required surgery and Keeton missed the back half of the season.

Keeton, a senior, has not redshirted during his Utah State career, so he could come back to play next season.

In the two games he played this year, Keeton was 51 of 92 for 426 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushed for 81 yards and one score. Keeton currently ranks fifth among active FBS quarterbacks in completion percentage (.654), seventh in career touchdown passes (58), eighth in total touchdowns responsible for (73) and 10th in total offense for a career (7,621 yards).

Sophomore Darell Garretson, who took over for Keeton last year, started the Aggies last game, a 24-14 loss to Arkansas State on Sept. 20, and will be the starting quarterback going forward.

Could Georgia coach Mark Richt use two QBs against Vanderbilt?

Mark Richt is no stranger to alternating quarterbacks at Georgia. While he hasn't employed the strategy in recent history – Aaron Murray's presence helped dissuade it – Richt isn't saying no to using two QBs in the near future.

Senior Hutson Mason took over for Murray last year after Murray suffered a knee injury. Mason entered 2014 as the starting QB and has kept the job. However, he hasn't been dynamic; through the first four games he hasn't thrown for over 200 yards.

Richt was asked Tuesday if he planned to use backup quarterbacks Brice Ramsey or Faton Bauta against Vanderbilt. Given that Georgia is a heavy favorite at home and Vanderbilt is the worst team in the SEC, it'd be a prime opportunity to give either QB a chance to play in a conference game.

"A plan to? I don't know," Richt said via UGASports.com. "We're just practicing like usual, and we'll figure that out Thursday when we talk."

Early in Richt's tenure at Georgia he played both QB David Greene and QB D.J. Shockley. He didn't downplay the benefits of using two QBs Tuesday.

"I've done it over the years," Richt said when speaking of the two QB system. "I was used to doing it at Florida State, then when I got here, we did it with Shock [Shockley] because that's kind of what I was used to doing. I was kind of used to it but I don't think [offensive coordinator Mike Bobo] felt quite as strong so we kind of got away from it. Still, it's not a bad thing to do."

Saturday against Tennessee, Mason threw his first two interceptions of the season. While he's only thrown for 566 yards all season, Georgia's successful running attack with Todd Gurley and others means Mason doesn't have to carry the load of the offense. And it also means Richt can afford to look at options for the future at QB if he so chooses.

Mason said he's been putting too much pressure on himself and vows to start attacking defenses more. If he's successful, he can make his head coach think twice about truing a new QB for a series or two.

"Again, I think some of my problem in the past has just been maybe putting too much pressure on myself to try and get everything right, and that's slowed down my ability to play, mentally," Mason said. "As a quarterback you always want to be the guy who always gets the protection right, gets the check right, know 100 percent what the defense is doing," Mason said. "Sometimes when the defense is doing a good job disguising it takes a little while instead of just playing off your basic rules of playing freely. I think that's what I've kind of done a bad job of in the past, putting too much pressure on myself to getting it 100 percent right instead of attacking what I see, so that's what I'm going to fix."

Michigan fans march on UM president's home calling for the firing of coach Brady Hoke and AD Dave Brandon

About 1,000 Michigan students marched to the home of Michigan president Mark Schlissel on Tuesday evening to protest athletic director Dave Brandon and coach Brady Hoke.

The protests came just days after Hoke came under fire for keeping quarterback Shane Morris in the game after he was clearly struggling with an array of injuries.

"Down with Dave" goes the chant http://ift.tt/1xCpLsC

— David Jesse (@reporterdavidj) September 30, 2014

"Dave Brandon should not be the athletic director at the University of Michigan." http://ift.tt/1xCpLIU

— Alejandro Zúñiga (@ByAZuniga) September 30, 2014

Hoke issued a statement Sunday saying it was the athletic training staff that said it was OK for Morris to continue playing while Brandon issued a statement claiming the university failed to make the proper decisions regarding Morris’ welfare.

Schlissel also issued a statement late Tuesday evening:

“Despite having one of the finest levels of team medical expertise in the country, our system failed on Saturday,” Schlissel said. “We did not get this right and for this I apologize to Shane, his family, his teammates, and the entire Michigan family. It is a critical lesson to us about how vigilant and disciplined we must always be to ensure student-athlete safety. As president, I will take all necessary steps to make sure that occurs and to enforce the necessary accountability for our success in this regard.”

Morris suffered a leg injury early in the game that had him hobbled much of the second half. In the fourth quarter, a Minnesota player rolled Morris’ ankle, causing Morris to limp even worse. A few plays later, Morris suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit, which caused him to collapse into the arms of one of his offensive linemen.

Morris played one more play before being relieved for backup Devin Gardner. Then Garner lost his helmet, was forced to come out of the game and Morris was sent back in to take a handoff.

Hoke was already on the hot seat after Michigan’s poor performance netted the school a 2-3 record. The three losses are the most the Wolverines have suffered in September in the 135-year history of the program.

Students carried signs and chanted “Down with Dave” and “Fire Brandon” during the protest.

No one with authority at Michigan has commented on the fate of either Hoke or Brandon and Hoke insisted during his press conference Wednesday that he and Brandon are on solid footing.

”Dave Brandon and I have a great relationship,” Hoke said. “It's been built on trust, it's been built on integrity, it's been built on character. We also understand the leadership and the roles of leadership we both have. Dave, being a former player here and playing for coach (Bo) Schembechler, I think, obviously, he understands those expectations that we all have. That is, we want to win football games, we want to mentor kids so they learn great life lessons and we want to do it with high integrity and high character."

Hoke also maintained that it was not his call to leave Morris in the game.

"From the start, when you're a leader, you always have to take responsibility," he said. "I take responsibility for our student-athletes, and I would take it for their health and welfare. But I'll also make it clear I don't make decisions on the health and welfare, and that shouldn't be the coach's decision. That's why we have some of the best trainers, some of the best doctors in the country. … They will, unchallenged, have the authority to make those decisions."

Davis Webb practices Tuesday, could start against Kansas State

After suffering a left shoulder injury in Thursday night's loss to Oklahoma State, Texas Tech QB Davis Webb's status is day-to-day according to coach Kliff Kingsbury on Monday.

However, Webb might have taken a step towards playing Saturday against Kansas State during Tuesday's practice.

A spokesperson for Texas Tech confirmed to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that Webb practiced Tuesday. Webb had been seen fully dressed for practice.

When Kingsbury addressed Webb's status Monday, he said Webb needed to be able to protect his shoulder. When Webb was scrambling in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma, his left forearm landed on the turf and his arm jammed into his shoulder.

"Just make sure he can protect himself, really, and operate at a level we need him to operate," Kingsbury said Monday. "But more than anything, that he can handle taking a hit and protect himself."

Webb is 118-186 passing for 1,356 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions through four games. Against Oklahoma State he threw 54 passes in just over three quarters worth of action. The six interceptions have come in three games. He threw two in a close win against Central Arkansas and two each in losses to Arkansas and OSU. The Red Raiders are 2-2.

Following the injury, Webb went to the locker room in obvious discomfort but returned to the sidelines a short time later without a look of incredible pain on his face. However he wasn't cleared by Tech's medical staff to re-enter the game for fear of instability in the shoulder.

He was replaced by freshman Patrick Mahomes against Oklahoma State. Mahomes would get the start if Webb is unable to go.

"[Mahomes] gets a ton of reps during the week, so we'll make sure we script it appropriately," Kingsbury said. "But he gets plenty of reps where we can get him things that we know he's comfortable with and get him repped."

Ohio State fan that ran on the field loses his academic scholarship

The Ohio State student who became an Internet joke after being body-slammed by an Ohio State coach is losing his academic scholarship.

Anthony Wunder, 21, ran onto the field during last Saturday’s Ohio State home victory against Cincinnati and as he got close to the Ohio State bench, he was stopped and slammed by assistant strength and conditioning coach Anthony Schlegel, a former Ohio State linebacker.

Wunder, a fourth-year engineering student, is part of the Evans Scholars program, which provides tuition and housing for former golf caddies. Because Wunder is facing chargers of misdemeanor criminal trespassing, the program revoked his scholarship and housing privileges, according to his attorney Mark Collins.

Collins entered a not-guilty plea.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he did have a talk with Schlegel about the hit.

"I appreciated him protecting our players," Meyer said earlier this week. "[But] I'd rather him not have a lawsuit if something bad would happen, you drill a guy like that.

"So we had a partial-serious conversation. And we also gave him a 'Hit City' award, our team, and had a little fun with it, too."

Collins told the Columbus Dispatch that the veracity of the hit would be something he would continue to look at and discuss.

Arizona State QB Mike Bercovici to start against USC

Aug 28, 2014; Tempe, AZ, USA; Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Mike Bercovici (2) looks on during the second half against the Weber State Wildcats at Sun Devil Stadium. (Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports) Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly will miss Saturday’s game against USC, according to coach Todd Graham.

Kelly suffered a foot injury against Colorado three weeks ago and hasn’t played since. Graham said he hoped to have Kelly back by the Oct. 18 contest against Stanford.

Mike Bercovici played in his stead and completed 42-of-68 passes for 488 yards and three touchdowns. The 42 completions marked a school record. However, he also had two interceptions, including one at the end of the first half that was returned by Ishmael Adams 95 yards for a touchdown. Prior to the interception, Arizona State trailed 20-17 and was in a position to tie the game or even take the lead heading into the half. However, the pick-six put the Sun Devils in a 10-point hole from which it never recovered.

Bercovici also had a fumble that led to a UCLA score.

Arizona State suffered its first loss of the season, 62-27.

"That was embarrassing. It was a frustrating night," Graham said following the game. "The standard that we set here was not met tonight."

Bercovici put the turnovers on himself and said with the kind of numbers he had, the offense should have been able to be a little more productive.

"With those kind of numbers, we should be putting up 60-something points,'' Bercovici said. "I take that personally as a quarterback."

Arizona State will face a similar issue this weekend trying to put up points against a USC defense that only allows 17.5 points per game. But Bercovici said getting that first primetime game under his belt would help his confidence heading into another primetime game against the Trojans.

"I feel like I've done a pretty good job of understanding situational football, but you don't realize the magnitude of each play when you're in a Thursday night, prime-time game like that," Bercovici said. "It was a huge learning experience. I wish it wasn't a learning experience, but basically, going into this next game I got even more confidence."

Georgia Tech will take bitcoin payments for concession items

Don't have any cash at a Georgia Tech football game? You can buy popcorn and a drink now with bitcoin.

The school announced Wednesday that it would accept bitcoin for concession purchases at Bobby Dodd Stadium. As part of the partnership, students will be able to use bitcoin on Georgia Tech's campus as well. The bitcoin stations at the stadium will be at the student section.

“We look forward to working with BitPay to make bitcoin a viable payment option for our students and fans,” Georgia Tech athletic director Mike Bobinski said in a statement. “At Georgia Tech, we are always looking to lead in innovative ways, and this partnership with BitPay gives us an opportunity to do so by integrating this new technology at a sports venue and in the daily lives of our students."

Students will be able to use bitcoin on their BuzzCards, the student credit payment method.

In June, BitPay announced that the former Beef O'Brady's Bowl would become the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl.

Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer online currency system. People can buy bitcoins at bitcoin exchanges online and store them in a virtual wallet. The payment system also allows users to be anonymous; transactions are only tracked by wallet ID rather than by the user's name.

Will other schools follow Georgia Tech's lead? If bitcoin continues to take off and Georgia Tech students utilize it, it's very likely. Though after the value of bitcoin skyrocketed at the beginning of 2014, it's starting to decline as questions have risen about the security of the payment method. When the St. Petersburg Bowl sponsorship announcement was made, the value of a bitcoin according to this website was $608. Wednesday, a bitcoin was worth $385.

Cincinnati football staff member fired after sex abuse charge

Antrione Archer, the Cincinnati Bearcats' director of player welfare and development, has been fired from his post.

According to WKRC, Archer, 28, was in a grocery store and exposed his genitals and touched a worker at the store.

According to court records, police said Archer was in the Fort Mitchell Kroger May 27 and asked a 73-year-old employee for help finding some vitamins. Police said while she was helping him, Archer quote, "pulled his penis from his pants," and also, "placed his exposed penis against her backside." Police said he did this several times at different locations throughout the store. The incident was caught on store surveillance cameras.

Two weeks later, after police had identified Archer as a suspect, he was interviewed and confessed.

Archer was booked and charged on June 14, according to Cincinnati.com. Per Cincinnati athletic director Mike Boh, the school learned of his charges on Friday and suspended him before dismissing him on Tuesday.

“UC Athletics is fully committed to upholding the highest level of professionalism and conduct for our staff, coaches and student-athletes,” Bohn said. “The university will cooperate with the authorities in this matter.”

Archer had been with the school since 2011. In his role with the team, Archer helped prep players for the future and his case is set to go to trial on October 15.
