Bryce Petty's final 11 minutes against TCU might have been his Heisman moment

In the summer, there was talk that TCU might regret coming from the Mountain West to the Big 12 because it couldn’t keep up.

Well, TCU had a chance to quiet all of its haters and instead just gave them more fuel. TCU had 58-37 lead against Baylor with 10:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, tried to sit on the lead and watched one of the nation’s best offenses score 24 unanswered points to steal a win.

It wasn’t so long ago that Baylor was this team — on the cusp of breaking through as the top team in the Big 12.

But you don’t get to the top by letting up.

When Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty threw a pick-six with 11:38 remaining, the Bears could have easily been defeated. Instead, it was re-energized. In less than a minute, Baylor answered. After TCU did a poor job of trying to whittle down the clock, Petty continued to work his magic and scored again 4 minutes later. Baylor’s game-tying touchdown less than 2 minutes after that.

It’s easy to say TCU blew this game, but we also might have just seen Petty’s Heisman moment. Most quarterbacks would not have responded the way Petty did after throwing that pick-six. Most might have made more mistakes. Instead, Petty seemingly got better. The final 11 minutes of the game against TCU might have been the finest in his college football career.

TCU is only in its third year in the Big 12. It’s offense has finally caught up to its defense and it looks like, down the road, it can be a one of the powers in the conference — and could even still win it this year. But this game might have to be one of the necessary growing pains the Horned Frogs have to experience to get there.

Mississippi State beats Auburn 38-23

Is Mississippi State set to be the No. 1 team in the country?

A week after ascending to No. 3 in the AP Poll, the highest ranking in the school's history, the Bulldogs beat No. 2 Auburn 38-23 on Saturday thanks to a relentless ground attack and two Auburn turnovers on its first two offensive plays.

While the turnovers didn't fulfill the "set the tone" cliche for the Tigers, they certainly resulted in a hole that Auburn was unable to dig out of. On Auburn's first play, Nick Marshall threw an interception. That led to a 7-0 hole. On the next offensive play after the Tigers got the ball back, D'haquille Williams fumbled after catching a pass from Marshall. It was 14-0.

After a punt on Auburn's third drive, the game was 21-0 before there were 6 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Auburn twice got the game within one possession at 21-13 and 28-20 in the third quarter, but never got any closer.

Another turnover officially doomed Auburn. Mississippi State kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter to make the margin 31-20. On the ensuing kickoff, Ricardo Louis fumbled the ball while fighting for extra yardage. Mississippi State recovered the fumble and two plays later the game was 38-20. Ballgame.

MSU QB Dak Prescott's passing wasn't exceptional. He threw two interceptions, though he made up for it with his running ability. He had 21 carries for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He was complimented by RB Josh Robinson's 97 yards and two touchdowns.

As Mississippi State ran for 223 yards, Auburn ran for 232. And as Nick Marshall threw for 209 yards, because of the turnovers, it simply wasn't enough. Auburn rarely had chances to impose its high-speed tempo on the Bulldogs and dig out of the canyon. Pending Ole Miss' result against Texas A&M, MSU has a chance to be the only undefeated team in the SEC West.

The Bulldogs will certainly vault over Auburn in Sunday's polls. Will the win be enough to pass Florida State, which won on the road at Syracuse?

Both teams are off next weekend. In two weeks, MSU plays Kentucky while Auburn plays South Carolina.

Random man in Clemson shirt shows up on Louisville bench (Video)

You don’t see this every day.

During the second quarter of Saturday afternoon’s Clemson-Louisville game at Memorial Stadium, a random man wearing a Clemson t-shirt and a sideline credential made his way over to the Louisville bench. He was just sitting there as the Cardinals defense huddled up before being forcibly removed by security.

This is seriously one of the weirder things we’ve seen. The Louisville players were understandably perplexed by the situation.

The guy is probably no more than a fan who scored sideline passes and went somewhere he was not supposed to be, but it’s still a real head-scratcher.

Auburn OC Rhett Lashlee wiped out while calling a timeout (GIF)

Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee showed great determination his timeout call.

Lashlee wiped out on the slick sideline in the third quarter of Auburn's game at Mississippi State while trying to call timeout. He was sprinting towards the official on the Auburn sideline and when he went to stop he landed on his butt.

He did get the timeout.

The end of the second quarter of the game was played in a downpour and while the rain let up during halftime, the field was clearly slick. With Lashlee not wearing cleats on wet and painted grass, he learned that the hard way.

Marcus Mariota picked up his own fumble and scored a TD (GIF)

It wasn't the most glamorous of plays, but thanks to a lot of open space, Oregon QB Marcus Mariota deftly picked up his own fumble and scored a touchdown in the third quarter against UCLA.

Mariota was running a read option play and saw that UCLA had committed to the running back so he kept the ball himself and ran to the left. As he went to tuck the ball and run, he mishandled the ball and fumbled.

However, since UCLA had committed so significantly to the running back, Mariota had plenty of time to pick the ball up and stroll into the end zone.

The touchdown gave Oregon a 28-10 lead and the Ducks quickly made the lead 35-10. Mariota's scoop and score was his second rushing TD of the day and his fourth total touchdown of the game. Thanks to the suspension of Todd Gurley and losses by other teams, a big win against UCLA can help put Mariota near the top of the Heisman race.

Oklahoma withstands late Texas rally to win in Red River Rivalry

Texas was itching for an upset in Saturday’s Red River Rivalry game with No. 11 Oklahoma, but the Sooners withstood a late rally from the Longhorns to hold on for a 31-26 win.

Texas dominated much of the game statistically, but an Oklahoma pick six and a 91-yard kick return for a score allowed the Sooners to overcome just 29 yards of total offense in the first half and go into the break with a 17-13 lead.

The Sooners defense tightened early in the second half and the offense overcame its early struggles against the Texas D to put two touchdowns on the board. The lead, 31-13 with 12:50 to go in the fourth, looked comfortable, but the Longhorns, led by an impressive performance from quarterback Tyrone Swoopes, stormed back to make things interesting.

Swoopes, making his fifth career start, played by far his best game, throwing for 334 yards and two scores while running for 50 yards and another score. After he hit John Harris for a 6-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-goal to cut the deficit to 31-20, the sophomore used his running ability on the Longhorns’ next drive.

The 48-yard drive took just 1:41 and six plays as Swoopes ran for 33 yards and capped it off with a 12-yard score to cut the lead to 31-26 (UT failed on a two-point conversion and burned a timeout in the process) with five minutes left in the game.

Texas had a chance to get the ball back on Oklahoma’s ensuing possession, but the Sooners picked a good time to convert their first third down of the game. From the OU 31-yard line, Sooners quarterback Trevor Knight (12-of-20, 129 yards, 1 TD) found freshman running back Semaje Perine (18 carries, 62 yards, 1 TD) out of the backfield for nine yards on a 3rd-and-4. From there, Texas was out of timeouts and the Sooners were able to run down far enough that a final few plays by the Longhorns stood no chance, and Oklahoma improved to 5-1.

The Longhorns exhibited an inspired effort on the afternoon, and their fans gave Charlie Strong’s team a nice ovation as it exited the field. Strong’s squad dropped to 2-4, but showed marked improvement putting up 482 yards of offense while limiting the Sooners to only 232 yards. The Longhorns hope to rebound when they return to Austin next weekend to host Iowa State.

It wasn't pretty, but for an Oklahoma team coming off a tough loss to TCU, Bob Stoops’ squad should be happy to get back in the win column. The Sooners still have a great shot to come out on top in a crowded Big 12. That journey will continue next Saturday home against Kansas State.

Gurley did not make the trip to Missouri on Saturday after the university suspended him while it investigates allegations that he took money for autographs and memorabilia, an NCAA violation.

Gurley was a Heisman hopeful as the team’s leading rusher with 94 attempts for 773 yards and eight touchdowns.

Many counted Georgia out against Missouri because of Gurley’s absence, but the team seemed to play inspired for him. Backup running back Nick Chubb carried the rushing load with 38 carries for 143 yards and a score.

Georgia in charge of SEC East

No. 11 Oklahoma returns with 31-26 win over Texas

DALLAS (AP) Alex Ross had a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Zack Sanchez scored on a 43-yard interception return and No. 11 Oklahoma held on for another bounce-back victory under coach Bob Stoops, beating Texas 31-26 in the Red River rivalry Saturday. Georgia throttles Missouri 34-0 and becomes early SEC East frontrunner

Georgia RB Todd Gurley's suspension didn't matter on Saturday against Missouri.

Or maybe it did. With Gurley, the Bulldogs could have beaten the Tigers by more than 40. It was that much of a beatdown. Thanks to Missouri's putrid offense that turned the ball over five times, Georgia absolutely controlled a pivotal SEC East showdown and won 34-0.

Without Gurley and the injured Keith Marshall, Georgia started freshman Nick Chubb, the kid with the crazy vertical leap. Chubb immediately became Georgia's workhorse and while Missouri did its best to contain him, Chubb kept getting the ball. And getting the ball. And getting the ball. He finished with 38 carries for 143 yards and a touchdown while adding four catches for 31 yards.

While Chubb had 42 total touches, Missouri ran 43 offensive plays.

All five of Missouri's turnovers are attributed to QB Maty Mauk, who fumbled once and threw four interceptions. But two of the interceptions should have been caught; RB Marcus Murphy and WR Jimmie Hunt simply dropped catchable passes into the laps of Georgia defenders.

The other two? Well, they were bad. Mauk, who had a hard time making his progressions through receivers the few times he had time in the pocket, was flustered all day. One interception was to a waiting safety playing a deep zone. The other was a 'what are you thinking?' type throw into traffic across his body as he rolled to the left.

Mauk finished 9-21 passing for 97 yards. It was the first time Missouri was shut out since 2002 and the Tigers didn't even make it into the red zone. The first two times Mizzou got into Georgia territory, it turned the ball over.

While Mauk had the worst game of his career, maligned senior QB Hutson Mason played an efficient game for Georgia. With Missouri's defenders so focused on stopping Chubb and Georgia's running game, Mason was 22-28 for 156 yards and a score. Yes, he didn't throw much downfield again, an increasingly worrisome pattern for Georgia fans. But on Saturday, he didn't need to. Missouri kept giving the ball back to the Bulldogs.

Entering the game, Missouri was the only team in the SEC East without a conference loss and had the Tigers beaten the Bulldogs, would have been the clear favorites for the division. Instead, now Georgia has the tiebreaker over the Tigers and controls its own destiny to get to the SEC Championship Game, with or without Gurley, the star running back.

If Gurley is suspended for an extended length of time, there's no denying that Georgia isn't nearly as fearsome a team. But the Dawgs were rightful to be so confident in Chubb; while he may not rip off eight yards a carry like Gurley, he's clearly capable of being a lead back. And in an SEC East that may be as wide open as the West minus the great teams, Georgia is in control with or without its star player.

Kentucky WR Javess Blue makes crazy one-handed TD catch (Video)

After falling behind early against Louisiana-Monroe, Kentucky was able to build up a comfortable lead thanks in part to senior wide receiver Javess Blue.

Blue scored on an 83-yard catch and run for a score early in the second quarter, but his 21-yard TD catch from Patrick Towles in the third quarter was one of the better catches of the year and extended the Wildcats’ lead to 31-14.

As you can see, Towles found Blue on a deep slant, but with a Warhawks defensive back in tight coverage, Blue managed to deflect the ball to himself with his right hand, then corral it against his shoulder pad with the same hand while staying in bounds.

That is some incredible concentration.

Blue had no touchdown catches so far this season, but he really came to play Saturday afternoon to register his first two scores of the season in a 48-14 Kentucky win. Blue finished with three catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Third-and-goal snap goes off Texas QB Tyrone Swoopes' facemask (GIF)

Texas' offense is having issues with snaps near the goal line.

On Saturday against Oklahoma, Texas had a third-and-goal at the Oklahoma 3 in the second quarter. With QB Tyrone Swoopes in the shotgun and seemingly expecting the snap, it rifled off his facemask.

Perhaps it was a bit too hard? It was center Taylor Doyle's first game at center for Texas.

Texas recovered the fumble and was forced to kick a field goal. Instead of potentially tying the game with a touchdown, the Longhorns trailed 17-13 after the drive.

Last week against Baylor, Texas fumbled a snap on fourth-and-goal. Swoopes was under center that time, but the exchange was mishandled and Baylor got the football. The Longhorns lost the game 28-7 and failed to score an offensive touchdown.

The Longhorns' first half deficit against the Sooners has been largely self-inflicted. Texas has more offensive yards and has stifled Oklahoma's offense, but the Sooners have scored on kickoff and interception returns.

'Fire Al Golden' banner flies over Sun Life Stadium during Miami's game (Photo)

The Al Golden welcome wagon has officially crashed.

A banner that read “FIRE AL GOLDEN SAVE THE U” flew over Sun Life Stadium during Saturday’s game against Cincinnati.

Miami is 3-3 this season, but are 1-2 in conference play and have just one win against an FBS team with a winning record.

Up until this season, Golden’s teams had gotten better during each season, but he’s fallen far short of expectations to return Miami to its former championship-winning self.

About a month ago, a disgruntled Miami fan set up a GoFundMe campaign asking fans to donate funds to fly a “Fire Al Golden” banner above Sun Life Stadium during a home game. The campaign has since been taken down.

No word on who is responsible for the banner, it bears the hashtag #westendzone, but if it isn’t the guy who started the campaign, he’s probably going to be disappointed someone beat him to it.

Texas Tech WR Devin Lauderdale scores first two career TDs with name misspelled on jersey (Photo)

Texas Tech is off to a great start at home against West Virginia largely because of wide receiver Devin Lauderdale.

Lauderdale, a sophomore junior college transfer, already has caught two touchdown passes for the Red Raiders in the first quarter. There is one problem, however. Lauderdale caught the two touchdowns – the first two of his career – with his last name spelled incorrectly on the back of his jersey. Oops

Devin Lauderdale of #texastech scores 2 TDs in 1q. May never again let them spell his name correctly. @UniWatch http://ift.tt/1vZqx0O

— Craig Bradley (@Craigley) October 11, 2014

As you can see, the second 'D' is missing. That's not a good look for the TTU equipment department.

Coming into the game, Lauderdale had eight catches for 100 yards in five games for the 2-3 Red Raiders. He passed that yardage total Saturday in the first quarter alone with his two scores – one from 34 yards and another from 76 yards.

Maybe now that he’s making big plays on the field, Lauderdale's name will be spelled correctly in Texas Tech’s next game.
