Why Does Jameis Winston's Attorney Keep Naming Winston's Accuser?
Quarterback competition could be coming to Ohio State in 2015
When All-Big quarterback Braxton Miller went down with a shoulder injury in preseason camp, no one – even Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer – knew what to expect from redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett.
He had his growing pains, including a three-interception performance in a week two loss to Virginia Tech, but since then, Barrett has led the Buckeyes to seven straight wins and now Meyer may have a quarterback controversy on his hands heading into the 2015 season.
Of course, that’s not an issue right now with Miller out for the year, but Meyer used the word “competition” on Monday when alluding to his quarterback situation next season.
“Competition brings out the best and I’m really excited to have two really good quarterbacks next year, if that’s the plan,” Meyer said. “I think they’re both excellent quarterbacks and we’ll worry about that day when it comes.”
That’s a change of tune from what Meyer said in late September after Barrett threw for 330 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Cincinnati.
“Braxton is our quarterback,” Meyer said. “To be fair to Braxton, the Big Ten Player of the Year. But it’s good to know we’ve got both of them.”
Barrett’s improvement has been drastic over the course of the season. His best performance yet came Saturday night when the Buckeyes knocked off defending Big Ten champions Michigan State on the road to take over sole possession of first place in the Big Ten east. In the win, Barrett threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns while also running for 86 yards and two more scores.
Frankly, he’s looked like the best quarterback in the Big Ten and one of the best in the country.
“J.T.'s made incredible jumps as far as how he handles his business and accuracy of passing last week was fantastic,” Meyer said. “His biggest jump is just being the manager. He does a good job getting us in the right play. He understands defenses really well now. And his accuracy, when he's accurate, that's a tough one to stop. He's a very intellectual quarterback.”
Even with Barrett’s rapid rise, Miller has made every indication that he’ll return to the team for his fifth year. This situation is certainly a long way off, but when preseason camp rolls around in 2015, the Ohio State coaches could have a difficult decision on their hands.
For now, Barrett will lead the Buckeyes through their final three regular season games and a likely berth in the conference title game.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly is frsutrated QB Everett Golson's mistakes
Brian Kelly isn’t happy with his quarterback that much was clear Saturday evening as he spoke to the media following a 55-31 dismantling at the hands of Arizona State.
Everett Golson, who was once considered a Heisman contender, threw four interceptions, including two that were returned for touchdowns, and lost a fumble. In all, Arizona State scored 28 points off Golson’s mistakes.
"There were absolutely no changes in what they did, which makes it even more maddening and frustrating," Kelly said. "I guess that's what I'm most upset about because we could've moved the ball today effectively. It's one of those deals where you take one step forward and two steps back and he comes back in the second half and does some really good things. He's got to strive for consistency. If he plays clean in the first half, who knows where we'd be right now."
Most coaches aren’t quick to throw their quarterback under the bus during a loss, but Kelly had no problem laying the blame on Golson. At one point during his press conference, he got into a terse conversation with a reporter who tried to justify some of Golson’s mistakes.
But Golson’s poor performance didn’t exactly come out of left field, he does have 17 turnovers in his past six games.
“We’ve been working with him,” Kelly said. “I mean, I don’t know. Sooner or later he’s gotta take it on himself to take care of the football. I don’t know what else to do. We’re at that point now where it hurt us in the game, obviously.”
It’s unfortunate because if you take away the turnovers, Golson has been a star for the Irish. He’s thrown for 2,757 yards and 24 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for six scores. He had the Irish sitting at No. 10 in the College Football Playoff rankings and an offensive pass interference against Florida State away from being undefeated heading into the Arizona State game.
To Golson’s credit, he didn’t shirk the blame that Kelly put on him. He accepted responsibility for the Arizona State loss and acknowledged he had to get better.
"Basically, I honestly think it's all on me really," Golson said. "When you play with fire as much as I did today, you're going to get burnt eventually, so I've got to obviously be better, clean up a lot in practice and I think that's where it really starts, is in practice."

Oklahoma QB Trevor Knight does not have concussion, status unknown for Saturday
Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight left Saturday’s 48-14 loss to Baylor in the fourth quarter with a neck injury and OU head coach Bob Stoops said Monday that Knight’s status is currently unknown moving forward.
According to Soonerscoop.com, Stoops said Knight’s MRI and X-rays were negative, but he was “pretty sore.” Stoops said the sophomore would not practice on Monday and that the team will know more about his status for Saturday’s game against Texas Tech over the next few days.
Additionally, Stoops was clear that Knight’s injury is not a concussion.
Coach Stoops confirms that Trevor Knight did not sustain a concussion.
— Oklahoma Football (@OU_Football) November 10, 2014
With Knight currently sidelined, redshirt freshman Cody Thomas will take first team reps in practice. Additionally, Stoops said Blake Bell, who was converted to tight end over the offseason, would be Thomas’ backup if Knight cannot play.
Coach Stoops says that if Trevor Knight can't play this week, Blake Bell would likely be the backup QB to Cody Thomas
— Oklahoma Football (@OU_Football) November 10, 2014
Knight has started all nine games for the Sooners this season. He has thrown for 2,197 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions while also running for 340 yards and five touchdowns. If Thomas is forced to make his first career start in Knight’s absence, he’ll face a porous Texas Tech (3-6, 1-5 Big 12) defense that allows 41.6 points per game.
The loss to Baylor dropped the Sooners to 6-3 (3-3 Big 12) on the season.

Northwestern LB Collin Ellis retires due to concussions
Northwestern team captain Collin Ellis will retire from football due to medical reasons, head coach Pat Fitzgerald announced Monday. Ellis, a redshirt senior linebacker, has not suited up for the Wildcats since he suffered a concussion on Oct. 11 against Minnesota, his second of the season.

— #B1GCats Football (@NUFBFamily) November 10, 2014
“It’s a decision I think is absolutely the correct one,” Fitzgerald said per ESPN.com. “It’s one that he’s made with our medical team. And we’ve been in a lot of private conversations, Collin and I, and I think it’s the right decision short-term and also the right decision long-term.”
In five games played this season, the 6-foot-2, 235-pound Ellis registered 33 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack and one interception. After playing primarily on special teams in 2011 and 2012, Ellis emerged as a starter at strong-side linebacker last season and racked up 78 tackles and three interceptions.
“It’s really sad and disappointing that he wont get a chance to put on the helmet again and the jersey and go out and play,” Fitzgerald said. “But he’s had a wonderful career. He’s doing a great job passing on his knowledge, his love, his passion.”
The possibility that Ellis would not be able to return to the field has been in the cards for a few weeks.
“My heart’s broken for him,” Fitzgerald said late last month. “My hope is that if things work out, be will get a chance to play again, but we have to do what’s right for the rest of his life.”
Ellis is now the third Northwestern player to retire from football this season due to injury. Cornerback Daniel Jones retired during the summer due to a knee injury while Dwight White, also a cornerback, discovered he has only one kidney earlier this season and announced his retirement in October.
The Wildcats lost their fourth straight game over the weekend to drop to 3-6 on the season. They will travel to South Bend to play Notre Dame Saturday afternoon.

Ed Orgeron says he's ready to come back to USC
Less than a year after leaving USC, former interim coach Ed Orgeron wants back in the mix.
Orgeron told L.A. Times columnist Bill Plaschke that he would entertain an offer to be an assistant on coach Steve Sarkisian’s staff if Sarkisian asked.
But that's the thing, Sarkisian did ask — 11 months ago.
Orgeron said he was so hurt that he didn’t get the head coaching job after helping steer the Trojans through the firing of former coach Lane Kiffin that he couldn’t bear the thought of being around the program. Orgeron was 6-2 with the Trojans and helped them to a bowl game after they started the season 3-2.
"Pat Haden was gracious and kind and generous to me, Sark is a friend who made me an outstanding offer, everyone there has been nothing but classy and professional with me," Orgeron told the Times. "But it just hurt too bad to suddenly not be their head coach. Maybe me staying for the bowl game, being positive, that could have helped me in the long run, but I was heartbroken and I couldn't fake it."
But after spending a year as a stay-at-home dad and watching his two 15-year-old boys excel in tennis and football, Orgeron said he wouldn’t mind getting back in the game.
"I will be a USC Trojan forever, and, I don't know what they're thinking, but the door to come back there is always open in my mind," Orgeron told the paper. "If the right situation comes up this year and they ask me to go back, I'd be more than happy to listen.
"I'd come back as an assistant. I love the people there. I'm with my family now, but I miss my family there. I miss 'em right now. In the belly."
Sarkisian was asked Monday whether welcoming Orgeron back into the fold would be something he’d entertain, and Sarkisian sidestepped the question stating he didn’t speak about hypothetical situations.
“Ed’s a terrific football coach,” Sarkisian said. “He’s a friend of mine. I have a great deal of respect for Ed, but quite honestly, we play Cal Thursday night at 6 o’clock.”

Ohio State's Dontre Wilson out for 'a few weeks' with broken foot
Ohio State’s Dontre Wilson caught his third touchdown of the season Saturday night at Michigan State and he did so with a broken foot.
Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer confirmed on Monday that the sophomore H-back would miss time due to the injury, which occurred at an unknown point during the 49-37 win at Spartan Stadium. He underwent surgery on Sunday, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.
“He’s out for a few weeks,” Meyer said. “I don’t know the extent. They may have to put a pin in it.”
Though he caught two passes for 23 yards and a score, Wilson had an overall rough game against the Spartans. He fumbled twice on kickoff returns, one of which was recovered by MSU. He also dropped what should have been a long touchdown pass in the second half.
For the season, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Wilson has 21 catches for 300 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also ran the ball 18 times for 100 yards. On returns, Wilson has averaged 24 yards and 9.7 yards per attempt on kickoffs and punts respectively.
With Wilson out, Meyer said Noah Brown, Corey Smith and Nick Vannett are all candidates to fill the void.
Now 8-1 and 5-0 in conference play this season, the Buckeyes will travel to face 7-2 (4-1 Big Ten) Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.

Report: Maryland WR Stefon Diggs has lacerated kidney
Maryland wide receiver Stefon Diggs may not return to the field this season.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Diggs suffered a lacerated kidney against Penn State on Nov. 1. The injury will likely keep Diggs “out of game action through at least the end of the regular season.”
Diggs went down after a hard hit when trying to make a diving catch in the fourth quarter. Though he later returned to the game, the Sun’s Matt Zenitz said Diggs “was in noticeable pain while walking to the postgame media area after the game.”
Diggs was already suspended for Saturday night’s home game against Michigan State due to an incident before the Penn State in which Diggs and several other Terps initiated a confrontation with PSU players. Diggs made contact with an official during the scuffle and Maryland head coach Randy Edsall was reprimanded for failing “to control his team.”
Diggs, a junior, leads the Terps with 52 catches, 654 yards and five touchdowns. Deon Long, the team’s next leading receiver, has 35 catches for 389 yards and one score.
Beginning with the Michigan State game, Maryland (6-3) has three regular season games remaining. Following Saturday night’s game, Maryland will face Michigan on the road and Rutgers at home.

Steve Spurrier apologizes for walking out on press conference
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier apologized to the media during his weekly teleconference Sunday after walking out on them last week following the 45-42 overtime loss to Tennessee on Nov. 1.
“I need to apologize for not talking after that last ballgame we had here at Williams-Brice,” Spurrier said. “I came in there and made a quick statement and hit the road, and I should have stayed there and took a few questions and faced the music. So I apologize for that. I’ll try not to ever let that happen again.”
Spurrier made an opening statement following the loss and then got up and walked out without taking questions.
“I don’t need to take any questions, “ Spurrier said following the game. “You guys watched it. I need to just get out of here.”
The Football Writers Association of American sent a letter of complaint to the SEC following the shortened press conference, saying that Spurrier’s postgame actions were unacceptable.
Spurrier was clearly frustrated after his team lost a 14-point fourth-quarter lead. The Gamecocks have lost five games this season, the most they have lost since going 9-5 in 2010. Since then, South Carolina hasn’t lost more than two games in any of the past three seasons.

Oregon TE Pharaoh Brown remains hospitalized in Salt Lake City
After going down with a serious right leg injury against Utah Saturday night, Oregon tight end Pharaoh Brown remains hospitalized in Salt Lake City. According to The Oregonian, Brown was in stable condition as of Sunday evening “in the surgical intensive care unit” at the University of Utah Hospital.
The junior went down during the fourth quarter of the Ducks’ 51-27 win when he stumbled after stepping on a teammate’s foot. As he stumbled forward, Brown extended his right leg to regain his balance but he landed awkwardly and his leg buckled.
Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich, who described the injury as “significant,” said that Brown is out for the season. He is expected to undergo surgery this week.
“Going forward it’s a long process but that dude is a competitive guy and it’s already galvanized our team,” Helfrich said, “We walk into the locker room last night coming off the field and it was an unbelievable situation, a tough situation and just reveals more and more about our guys that we like.”
Helfrich said some of Brown’s family was at his side in Salt Lake City along with Horace Raymond, Oregon’s associate director for player development. Kim Terrell, Oregon’s director for athletic medicine, will also fly to Utah on Monday, Helfrich said.
“He needs to go through a couple of procedures here in the next three-to-seven days approximately to get as best a foundation as can be had going forward for his long-term prognosis, which we don’t know at this point at all,” Helfrich said.
In 10 games for the Ducks, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound Brown caught 25 passes for 420 yards and six touchdowns. Backups Johnny Mundt and Evan Baylis will likely see increased playing time in Brown’s absence. The two have combined for just three catches for 39 yards this season.
The win over Utah clinched a Pac-12 North title for the Ducks. Now 9-1 on the season, Helfrich’s team will round out the regular season with a home game against Colorado and a road game with Oregon State.

Nick Saban, Les Miles share a personal moment before game
Prior to Saturday’s pivotal and hard-fought SEC game between Alabama and LSU, coaches Nick Saban and Les Miles met at midfield to have a little chat about their mothers.
Miles’ 91-year-old mom passed away the night before the Tigers’ win against Ole Miss and at some point afterward Saban sent his condolences to LSU’s coach.
So Miles wanted let Saban know he appreciated the kind words.
“You know, it hit me because I was with my mother in Tennessee when [I heard],” Saban told Miles. “So, God bless you.”
“She’s sitting up there watching,” Miles responded. “We got another rooter upstairs, I just want you to know.”
It’s a pretty great moment between two longtime competitors, especially prior to a game that meant so much to both of their seasons.

Clemson freshman QB Deshaun Watson to start Saturday
After missing the last three games with a broken bone in his hand, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson will return to the starting lineup Saturday.
Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney said the standout freshman could have played Thursday night against Wake Forest, but senior Cole Stoudt was able to overcome a dinged up shoulder and lead the Tigers to a 34-20 win.
“(Watson) will take all first-teams on Monday,” Swinney said per TigerIllustrated.com. “We wanted to get through Thursday and not play him. He was ready to go if we needed him. We weren’t sure at one point that Cole would be able to make it through but he was able to gut it out.”
Stoudt started the season as the Tigers’ starter, but Watson showed his star potential and took over as starter in Clemson’s fourth game against North Carolina. Watson was injured two weeks later against Louisville and Stoudt returned to the starting role.
In Watson’s absence, Stoudt threw for 938 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions in wins over Louisville, Boston College, Syracuse and Wake Forest.
In all, Watson has played in six games (three starts), completing 75-of-112 passes for 1,176 yards, 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
Next on the schedule for the No. 21 Tigers is a road trip to Atlanta to meet No. 24 Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon. Now 7-2 (6-1 ACC), the Tigers still trail Florida State in the ACC Atlantic division standings.
