Oklahoma quarterback competition is still wide open

Apr 11, 2015; Norman, OK, USA; Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) looks to pass during the spring football game at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Red wins 20-7 over White. Mandatory Credit: Rob Ferguson-USA TODAY Sports With spring practice in the books, Oklahoma’s quarterback competition is still wide open. All four candidates – Trevor Knight, Baker Mayfield, Cody Thomas and Justice Hansen – are still in the running, and Saturday’s spring game didn’t make things any clearer for head coach Bob Stoops and new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.

“We’re gonna let this thing go until the fall,” Riley said, per ESPN.com. “It’s gonna be a great battle. There’s not enough separation.”

All four candidates saw their fair share of snaps in front of more than 30,000 at Memorial Stadium. As with any spring game, there were positives and negatives.

“They’ve had a nice spring again in their reads and what they’re doing with the ball,” Stoops said. “I think they were definitely putting some balls up that when it’s practice it’s no big deal, but when you’re in game-type situations it’s a bigger deal.”

Stoops said the forced passes and interceptions were not a reflection of the group’s solid play throughout the spring.

“They’ll learn from it,” Stoops said. “This isn’t indicative of what I’ve seen all spring. I’ve been pleased with what they’ve been doing all spring.”

Three of the candidates – Knight, Mayfield and Thomas – have a solid base of regular season experience, but each turned the ball over on Saturday.

Knight, who threw for 78 yards and an interception on 6-of-13 throwing on Saturday, burst onto the scene toward the end of his redshirt freshman season, especially with a standout Sugar Bowl performance against Alabama, but had a disappointing sophomore campaign.

Thomas started three games after Knight was injured (he returned for the Citrus Bowl) and completed just 46 percent of his passes while throwing two touchdowns and four interceptions. Thomas completed 5-of-12 passes for 83 yards and an interception on Saturday.

Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a true freshman at Texas Tech in 2013 before transferring to the Sooners. He showed flashes by converting 10-of-13 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions.

Hansen, a redshirt freshman, is the dark horse candidate of the group. He was 5-of-5 for 70 yards on the afternoon.

This will be one to keep an eye on as we inch toward the fall.

Former Mississippi State CB Jamerson Love arrested

Mississippi State defensive back Jamerson Love, back, breaks up a pass intended for Mississippi wide receiver Vince Sanders (10) during the first half of an NCAA college football game in Oxford, Miss., Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014. (AP Photo/Rogelio V. Solis) Former Mississippi State cornerback Jamerson Love was arrested in a domestic violence dispute last week.

According to the Clarion-Ledger, police in Oktibbeha (Miss.) County received a call about an incident on Thursday evening from “a female in distress.” Upon arrival, officers saw Love “standing outside of Destini Jones’ white Toyota” with “his head inside the car speaking with Jones.”

According to police, “marks were found on both parties” and “both were arrested and charged with domestic violence-simple.”

Love recently completed his senior season at Mississippi State and had 34 tackles. Overall in his career, Love appeared in 49 games (25 starts) and registered 121 tackles and four interceptions.

Love ran a 4.41 40-yard dash at the Bulldogs Pro Day last month, but is projected to go undrafted.

Vandy's 'Minute To Win It' is the best contest we've seen this spring (Video)

Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason participates in the team's Minute To Win It competition.

OK, we admit it, we handed out the Video of the Day award just a bit prematurely. And for that, we apologize.

While Northwestern’s Dizzy Bat Contest is a great, great thing, Vanderbilt’s "Minute To Win It" competition is absolutely hilarious.

Few teams need offseason bonding more than a Vanderbilt squad that is still learning under second-year coach Derek Mason. The Commodores were 3-9 in Mason’s first season after winning nine games in each of the previous two years under former coach James Franklin.

And nothing bonds a team together better than ridiculous challenges that include kicking shoes onto a table, stacking bolts off the end of a dowel and eating Oreos in an unconventional fashion.

Looks like Vanderbilt is having a lot more fun during the offseason than it did during the year.

Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett won't take reps during OSU's spring game

In one of the least surprising announcements of the spring, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said the quarterback competition would continue into the fall.

Cardale Jones and Stephen Collierr will take the bulk of the reps during the annual Scarlet and Gray scrimmage on Saturday; J.T. Barrett and Braxton Miller will be held out of the game completely.

"I don't know who our quarterback is going to be (this fall),” Meyer said adding that the subject of his quarterback rotation would be an "Aug. 15-type question."

Meyer did note that Barrett, who is recovering from ankle surgery, has progressed far quicker than anyone expected and that he’s already participated in some two-minute drills during spring practices. Miller’s rehab has been a little quieter. Meyer said the rehabilitation was going well, but that he didn’t have a timetable for Miller to return to regular football drills. Miller did throw some very short passes during the early part of spring football.

While Jones became a houeshold name after leading the Buckeyes to a national title, Collier is almost the forgotten piece in Ohio State’s quarterbacking race. He redshirted last season, but did a masterful portrayal of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota while the Buckeyes were preparing for national championship game. However, it will be difficult for him to see the field this year with so much talented traffic ahead of him.

Former Big 12 Newcomer of the Year to play one season with South Carolina

South Carolina’s secondary just got a little bit stronger.

Isaiah Johnson, a two-year starting strong safety at Kansas, tweeted Sunday that he is joining South Carolina.

Johnson has already graduated at Kansas and will enroll at grad school at South Carolina. Johnson will be immediately eligible and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Johnson, who spent seasons at Western Carolina and Iowa Western C.C., started all 24 games at strong safety for the Jayhawks during the past two seasons. He was named the Big 12’s Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2013 after posting 73 tackles and placing second in the conference with five interceptions. He had 75 tackles in 2014, which was second on the team.

South Carolina ranked seventh in the SEC in pass efficiency defense.

Defensive tackle Terrell Clinkscales announces he's leaving Kansas State

Terrell Clinkscales time at Kansas State has come to an end.

Clinkscales, a defensive tackle, announced via his private Twitter account that he has decided to leave the school.

“One door closes god opens another one,” he wrote. “I chased schools and juco and had every school in the country. I’m after my dream #NFL #godgotme.”

He also posted: “Things just didn’t work out. Everything is not for everyone. Upmost respect though. Closing this chapter on to the next one.”

Clinkscales was a highly touted junior college recruit out of Dodge City Community College, but only appeared in eight games as a backup last season and managed just two tackles.

This spring, coach Bill Snyder told media that Clinkscales wasn’t practicing.

“He and I are at odds right now,” Snyder said. “He’s not practicing with us right now. He’s doing some other things but he’s not practicing.”

Clinkscales was arrested last December for failure to appear in court and suspicion of witness/victim intimidation. The failure to appear warrant was due to expired tags or an unregistered vehicle. The charge of witness/victim intimidation and a later charge of criminal damage to property was connected to a domestic incident.

Former South Florida QB Mike White says he's going to Western Kentucky

Former South Florida quarterback Mike White has found a new place to play — Western Kentucky.

White, who was granted his release from USF on March 31, announced his decision on Twitter.

White will have to sit out a season, but would still have two years of eligibility remaining. That’s probably OK with White, since Brandon Doughty, last year's Conference USA Player of the Year, was granted a sixth year of eligibility.

White started 15 games at USF, but couldn't beat out Quinton Flowers and Steven Bench during the spring football competition. White lands at the school his former coach, Willie Taggart, put on the map.

Two Iowa State players arrested, including Paul Rhoads' son

(USA Today Sports Images) Two Iowa State players – Jake Rhoads and Terry Ayeni – are facing legal issues after separate incidents that occurred following Saturday’s spring game.

According to the Des Moines Register, Rhoads, the son of Cyclones head coach Paul Rhoads, was charged with public intoxication at 11:25 p.m. Saturday night. Rhoads, 20, is a redshirt sophomore wide receiver who caught three passes for 24 yards for the Cyclones last season.

Ayeni, a 6-foot-2, 278-pound defensive lineman, was arrested for disorderly conduct – a simple misdemeanor – early Sunday morning. Officers were called to break up a “scuffle” and saw Ayeni “punch a guy in the head,” according to Sgt. Joel Congdon of the Ames PD.

Ayeni, a redshirt junior, sat out the 2014 season due to a knee injury.

“We are aware of the situations involving our student-athletes,” Paul Rhoads said in a statement Sunday morning. “We are now in the process of gathering more facts and information.”

Coming off a 2-10 season, the Cyclones open their 2015 season against Northern Iowa on Sept. 5.

Lou Holtz, ESPN reportedly parting ways

NEW ORLEANS, LA - JANUARY 01: ESPN analyst Lou Holtz (R) congratulates Head coach Urban Meyer (L) of the Ohio State Buckeyes after defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide in the All State Sugar Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on January 1, 2015 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 42 to 35. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images) Lou Holtz is out at ESPN.

According to a report from Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch, the parting of ways between the 78-year-old Holtz and ESPN “was closer to a mutual agreement between the parties than Holtz getting forced out.”

Holtz, the former head coach at Notre Dame, South Carolina, Minnesota, Arkansas, N.C. State and William & Mary, had been a regular contributor to the network’s college football coverage since 2004. Holtz mainly worked with Rece Davis and Mark May on Saturday College Final, providing pregame, halftime and postgame coverage. Holtz also appeared on SportsCenter and occasionally worked as an in-game color analyst.

In an email with Deitsch, an ESPN spokesperson confirmed Holtz’s departure.

“Lou brought a champion’s perspective and a legacy of accomplishment to our coverage along with his distinctive style and humor. We appreciate his contributions and wish him all the best in the future,” the spokesperson said.

Holtz told 247 Sports in May that he would likely retire after the 2014 football season.

“I’d like to leave when people say, ‘Why are you leaving?’ not ‘When are you leaving?’” he said. “This is my fifth last year. They usually talk me into it,” Holtz said. “ESPN is a great organization to work for. We’ve been together nine years now. That’s unusual. They’re like my family. I love them. We enjoy it. There comes a time where you need to step aside and let the younger people do it.”

Holtz’s agent, Sandy Montag, also confirmed the move in a statement to SI.

“Lou enjoyed his time and friendships made at ESPN and looks forward to other opportunities in college football,” Montag said.

In addition to Holtz leaving the network, Davis is replacing Chris Fowler on College Gameday, so ESPN’s Saturday in-studio will certainly have a new look in 2015.
