Big Ten guarantees four-year scholarships

From ESPN.com - College Football - Big Ten guarantees four-year scholarships

Catfished recruit shows scholarship offer letter he received from Florida

Houshun Gaines says he really did have an offer from Florida.

Last week, Gaines had a signing ceremony to announce that he was going to Florida. One problem, Florida coaches didn't know he was having the ceremony or that he was committing to the school.

Gaines, a defensive end, apparently had been communicating to someone on Twitter who wasn't affiliated with the Gators' coaching staff. When Gator coaches found out that Gaines had committed to the school, they were confused. They hadn't talked to him in weeks.

“When I talked to a coach, they told me they hadn’t spoke to Gaines in several weeks,” Nash Central High School athletic director Michael Mosley told the Rocky Mount Telegram last week. “I think he was talking to someone he thought was a coach. I guess he said (on Friday) that he had talked to a coach the night before, but they said he hadn’t talked to anybody on the coaching staff.”

Lol I didn't think about it that way but, I got catfished.. Haha

— Houshun Gaines (@HZGduoUno) October 6, 2014

At least Gaines took it well. And while he might have been duped by someone posing as someone affiliated with the Florida program, he reposted to Twitter the scholarship letters he said he got from the school in August along with a letter he said he received from North Carolina State.

For those who think my offer isn't legitimate. Don't believe everything you see on the Internet ppl. http://ift.tt/1rXLLtg

— Houshun Gaines (@HZGduoUno) October 7, 2014

As you can see, the Florida letter says the offer is contingent on Florida having space for Gaines. And given that the school told his athletic director they hadn't heard from him recently, it's reasonable to think the school thought Gaines was heading in a different direction.

“There is a commitment from Florida, but it’s not a commitment as far as what took place (on Friday). They want to see more from him, and that’s their exact words,” Mosley told the RMT.

Even if he doesn't play at Florida, Gaines should end up playing FBS football somewhere. He's a three-star prospect according to Rivals and the No. 17 player in North Carolina. According to Rivals, he has seven other offers from FBS programs, including North Carolina State, which also still has interest in Gaines.

Big Ten to provide multi-year scholarships for student athletes

The Big Ten announced that its schools have agreed to provide multi-year scholarships to all athletes in all sports.

The conference made the agreement official on Wednesday and it's the first step among a likely many from Power Five conferences when it comes to increasing athlete benefits.

Per the release, a student's scholarship "will neither be reduced nor cancelled provided he or she remains a member in good standing with the community, the university and the athletics department." If a student leaves the school for a "bona fide reason, that student-athlete may return to the institution at any time to complete his or her degree with the assistance of an athletic scholarship."

The Big Ten also said it would work towards the "implementation of additional student-athlete welfare proposals through individual institutional action, conference-wide action or under the NCAA autonomy governance structure, including full grant-in-aids to meet cost of education and improved medical insurance."

Indiana and Maryland, two Big Ten schools, have been leaders in the movement to guarantee multi-year scholarships for all athletes. Indiana introduced an athlete's bill of rights while Maryland announced the "Maryland Way Guarantee."

Now that the Big Ten has made multi-year scholarships a conference mandate, you can expect other conferences to soon follow suit with announcements of their own. The NCAA approved autonomy for the Power Five conferences in August, allowing them to make their own rules and increase benefits.

Former Vanderbilt coach James Franklin said he lied about seeing video of alleged rape

Former Vanderbilt University coach James Franklin testified Wednesday that he lied about seeing the video of an alleged rape involving four of his former players — Brandon Vandenburg, Brandon Banks, JaBorian McKenzie, and Cory Batey.

The testimony came during a hearing for two of the suspects; Franklin spoke for about 20 minutes via Skype.

Franklin said he lied about seeing the video in an effort to drive home his anger regarding the incident.

Franklin testified he initially told football players he saw video of the alleged sexual assault but now confessed that he lied to the team.

— Lori Mitchell (@LoriWKRN) October 8, 2014

Defense challenges Franklin on whether he saw the video, because he has said before that he did see "disgusting" video.

— Tony Gonzalez (@TGonzalez) October 8, 2014

Franklin in team mtg.: “I spoke as if I had seen the video. I didn’t want to water down the message to them."

— Tony Gonzalez (@TGonzalez) October 8, 2014

Buzzfeed reported last September that a source close to one of the alleged suspects said a player showed Franklin the video and that Franklin told the player to delete it. Franklin, though his attorney Hal Hardin, had denied the allegation.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Franklin reiterated that he told players that they should take the matter seriously and tell their parents because it was going to be something that was going to affect the rets of their lives.

Franklin said he initially learned about the incident while on vacation in Florida and was ordered by the university to return and “stay out of it.” Franklin also said the players, which he ultimately dismissed, tried to tell their side of the alleged incident and that he told them he couldn’t talk about it.

Franklin resigned his position with Vanderbilt last year to take the head coaching position at Penn State.

Dabo Swinney says he's not thinking about 'what if?' about Deshaun Watson

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says he has no clue what the Tigers' season would be like if freshman Deshaun Watson started the season under center.

Senior Cole Stoudt was the Tigers' QB out of fall camp. He was the starter through the third game of the season, when he was replaced by Watson against Florida State. Since playing the second half against the Seminoles, Watson has been the team's QB ever since. However, Swinney says he doesn't deal in hypotheticals when he was asked Tuesday about Watson taking the field as the starter against Georgia in the first game of the season.

"I have no idea. I don't deal in hypotheticals," Swinney said. We hadn't seen him play in that situation before. We have to go through that process. Cole clearly won the job in the spring. He was still No. 1 after camp, although we all recognized that Watson was really coming. But … we had no idea how he'd respond in a game. Hindsight is always 20/20, but seeing him in that UGA game, the stage wasn't too big for him. He played well against S.C. State and just kind of took off against Florida State. I don't sit around and play hypotheticals."

Saturday, Clemson hosts Louisville in a game that probably eliminates the loser from any shot of competing for the ACC Atlantic Division title. Each team has a conference loss already, and the loser would likely be two games behind Florida State.

The Louisville defense is giving up 12.7 points per game and is sixth in the country in scoring defense. And Watson has played very well since becoming Clemson's full-time QB. He's completed 69 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and one interception and is 2-0 as a starter. Something will have to give.

“I think we want him to stay within the system," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "Our system is set up to where they take what they are given. Obviously, we don’t want him holding the ball but he has done a phenomenal job at that. He really has. He took a sack last week. We had two sacks."

“One was one the offensive line and one was on Deshaun," Swinney said. "For the most part, he has had a good instinct as far aswhen to run and when to create and extend a play. He has not done a whole lot of just holding the ball. He has a very good feel for his progressions."

It may be a bigger game for Louisville than Clemson. The Cardinals host Florida State on October 30 and if Louisville gets a win on Saturday, the Thursday night showdown with the Seminoles could be for the Atlantic title.

On Monday, Louisville coach Bobby Petrino compared the environment at Clemson's Death Valley to Syracuse. As you can imagine, it's a comment that didn't go over well with the Clemson faithful.

I think it's something you look forward to and you enjoy," Petrino said. "To be real honest with you, it's gonna be very similar to last week. That was a loud place. It was extremely -- I don't know if it can get any louder, even though the crowd wasn't that big. On that first third down and everyone started screaming and yelling, maybe it can't get any louder than that. The stadium will be big. There will be a lot of people there. The field's the same length. The goal posts are the same height."

So there's now a Clemson movement to start a "silent out" for pre-game warmups. The idea is that the Cardinals will be startled by the noise level at the beginning of the game if the stadium is extremely quiet before the game.

Miami creates special day for Make-A-Wish participant Carter Hucks (Video)

Miami had a special guest at practice on Wednesday as it welcomed Charleston, S.C., third-grader Carter Hucks, a Make-A-Wish participant who is fighting a life-threatening disease.

Hucks will spend the next few days, including game day, with the Miami football program and his favorite player running back Duke Johnson. And so far, Miami has made the experience as special as possible.

It outfitted Hucks in custom pads, helmet and a jersey that had the No. 8 (Johnson’s number) and Hucks’ last name.

"Just a great day and hopefully a great three days coming up for he and his family," coach Al Golden said following practice. "We're excited to welcome him. He went to meetings. He got taped up, put pads on. We're excited for Carter and he's having a great day right now.

"He's entering a stage or a battle in his life where he needs this. He needs happy moments. He needs people supporting him and everything. I hope our kids get as much out of it as they are giving to him. In terms of appreciation and understanding where we are and keep perspective. I'm happy that he's with us this week for his sake. But I also think our guys are getting a lot from it as well."

Hucks’ father Derrick and mother Jessie accompanied him to Miami. Derrick Hucks told local TV station CBS-4 that his son had grown up playing football, but hadn’t been able to for the past year because of his illness.

We here at Dr. Saturday were even able to find some YouTube video of Hucks’ skills at running back and he’s pretty darn good.

"Because of things with his health, I think being out here, seeing the guys running around, moving around it reminds him of the things he used to do," Derrick Hucks told the television station. "I think that's a big spirit booster for [Carter]. I think it reminds him after this procedure is done he'll be able to get back to being who he is.

"I was making a joke that hopefully by the time this whole procedure is over the next time he's in Coach Golden's office he's here to commit to playing his next four, five years at the University of Miami. This is a stepping stone in that direction with the whole procedure he's going to go through. I would love to see him out here. It's good to see him out here running around and what he could possibly be."

Nick Saban doesn't agree with AJ McCarron's assessment of the Alabama offense

Nick Saban was asked Wednesday about AJ McCarron's comments regarding Alabama's offense in its 23-17 loss to Ole Miss.

McCarron said Tuesday on his weekly Alabama-area radio appearance that he's known Saban to "handcuff" his offensive coordinators and that the offense was lacking leadership. Saban didn't agree with McCarron's evaluations of the game.

"I don't know how AJ would really know, but I don't necessarily see that as the case," Saban said during his weekly media teleconference.

Saban complimented the leadership skills of Blake Sims, the man who succeeded McCarron as Alabama's starting QB. After McCarron was the starter for three years, Sims and Jacob Coker, a highly-regarded transfer from Florida State, competed to be Alabama's starting QB. While Sims did throw the interception that ended Alabama's chances of a win, he didn't play poorly against Ole Miss, either.

"I think that leadership is something that we have several guys that have played a lot of football around here that do a good job," Saban said Wednesday. "I think sometimes people look at the quarterback position as the guy that has to be the leader and I think sometimes when you have a new quarterback and that guy is really concerned about what he is supposed to do, maybe he doesn't look to be perceived as the guy that's affecting other people.

"But actually, I think Blake does a pretty job of ... (Sims is) very well-liked by his teammates. He's a very positive, high-energy guy that has shown leadership. I don't think we played real well last week for whatever reasons, I don't know that that's all leadership. I'm sort of responsible for all that as coaches and players to make sure we're ready to play our best against good teams in tough environments on the road."

South Florida makes purple homecoming shirts; homecoming game is against East Carolina

While purple may be an approved accent color for South Florida, it wasn't a good choice for the school's 2014 homecoming shirts.

Homecoming is this week for the Bulls and purple shirts promoting the week's activities were printed. There's just one problem. The opponent in Saturday's homecoming game is East Carolina, a team whose primary colors are purple and gold.

“It’s a student committee,” USF Center for Student Involvement Director Monica Miranda told the USF Oracle about who made the decision for the shirts. “They didn’t realize purple was the color of the opposing school.”

Oops. Its the teams' first meeting as members of the American Athletic Conference. East Carolina was a member of Conference USA in 2013.

Because of the mixup, students are now being encouraged not to wear the shirts to the game. According to the Oracle, 1,200 shirts were distributed and the color conflict was noticed Friday after 200 were given out. A replacement order of green shirts was made and received Tuesday.

Now the school has to figure out what to do with the remaining purple shirts that haven't been given out.

“It is Homecoming, come on; we should root for the right team,” sophomore band member Claudia Garrett told the Oracle. “Next time, we should look at what team we’re playing.”

ECU is a 15-point favorite. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. ET Saturday.
