Matt Leinart, Brian Bosworth and Heath Shuler yearn for college years in new commercial

Who says you can’t relive the glory days?

In Dish Network’s new commercial, college football stars turned NFL busts Matt Leinart, Brian Bosworth and Heath Shuler pine for their collegiate glory days.

It’s funny and sad all at the same time.

Leinart won the Heisman Trophy and a now vacated national championship as the quarterback at USC, Bosworth, nicknamed “The Boz” was a two-time All-American linebacker at Oklahoma and Shuler finished second in the Heisman voting as a quarterback at Tennessee.

The one thing all three men have in common is despite glorious collegiate careers, they did exactly nothing in the NFL. This commercial is the first of two starring the trio. We can all look forward to that in a few weeks.

LSU safety Jalen Mills returns to practice after battery charges are reduced

LSU starting free safety Jalen Mills was back on the field Monday afternoon after the second-degree battery charge that had been leveled against him was reduced to simple battery.

Mills had been suspended since May after Mills allegedly punched a female in the mouth. According to the warrant, the victim told authorities she was at his apartment complex looking for a friend when she knocked on Mills’ door. He opened the door, closed it and after the victim knocked on the door one more time, she started walking down the hall.

A short time later, the victim said someone called her name, she turned and was punched in the face by Mills. The victim was knocked unconscious and received four stitches in her lip.

Mills’ attorney Brent Stockstill claimed his client never struck the victim and that it was another woman who hit her.

Mills was the Tigers’ third-leading tackler last season after starting in 12 of 13 games. He started at safety as a freshman before moving to safety.

Coach Les Miles said Mills will continue to serve in-house punishment, but is fully reinstated to the team. He said because Mills was not able to participate in offseason conditioning, he's behind and will need to spend extra time catching up.

Ohio State DL Tracy Sprinkle back with team after July arrest

Less than a month after being booted from the team due to multiple charges following a bar fight, defensive lineman Tracy Sprinkle is back on Ohio State’s roster.

A team spokesman confirmed to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer that Sprinkle was back with the team as preseason camp began Monday. He participated in practice Monday morning.

The 19-year-old Sprinkle initially faced charges of rioting, failure to disperse and cocaine possession stemming from a large fight outside the “Grown & Sexy Bar” in Lorain, Ohio in the early morning hours of July 5. The scene was described as a “riot” by police and Sprinkle was arrested after engaging in a fight after being told to disperse by officers.

After being apprehended, police found 0.2 ounces of cocaine in stuffed into the seat of the police car that Sprinkle was placed in. Sprinkle pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and he was initially dismissed from the team on July 7.

Almost a month later, on August 1, Sprinkle pleaded no contest to a drastically reduced charge of failure to comply. Sprinkle’s attorney said that the redshirt freshman had his blood, urine and hair tested for controlled substances “two days after his arrest.” When all tests came up clean, his charges were reduced and he avoided all felony charges. Instead of facing jail time, Sprinkle will be on probation for two years and was fined $500.

Buckeyes head coach said at Big Ten Media Days last week that Sprinkle was no longer with the program and that his status would be monitored as the legal process played out.

The 6-foot-3, 282-pound Sprinkle was a three-star recruit in the class of 2013 and did not play in his first year on campus. He was expected to compete for playing time in a reserve role in 2014.

Eastern Michigan debuts new gray field at Rynearson Stadium (Video)

With new head coach Chris Creighton running the show at Eastern Michigan, the program is in the ground stages of establishing a new identity. Naturally, one of Creighton’s top priorities was to install gray turf at Rynearson Stadium.

The gray FieldTurf is supposed to resemble concrete because Creighton wants his team to be so tough that it will play anyone anywhere, even on concrete. A little more than six weeks after the details for the new playing surface were announced, the program gave fans their first glimpse at what the program is calling “The Factory.”

Take a look.

Here we go! Football activities taking place for the first time on the new Factory turf! #EMUFB http://ift.tt/WXiYKS

— Adam Kuffner (@AKuffnerEMU) August 4, 2014

It’s a definitely a unique look for the Eagles as the team begins practice Monday. Of course, EMU isn’t the first program to feature a non-green playing surface. Boise State’s famous blue turf comes to mind first, but Eastern Washington has also gone with red turf, while Central Arkansas went with a purple and gray look.

Creighton has a tough challenge in turning around an EMU program that has won just four combined games in the past two seasons. It has to be encouraging, though, that the athletic department supported his idea for the gray field.

After coaching at Drake for six seasons, Creighton will make his FBS debut when the Eagles’ season kicks off at home against Morgan State on August 30.

SEC Network will be broadcast in International Space Station

The SEC Network is going to space.

Astronaut Barry Wilmore, a native of Tennessee, made one request for his upcoming trip to the International Space Station with two Russian cosmonauts, he needed to see his SEC football games.

So, NASA made sure Wilmore could get his football fix via the new SEC Network beamed into the International Space Station.

"I don't watch a lot of sports — my wife might not agree with that — but I do like to watch football, the SEC Game of the Week, and I try to catch (alma mater Tennessee) Tech every chance I get," Wilmore told the Nashville Tennessean.

Wilmore travels to the International Space Station on Sept. 26 and won’t return to Earth until March 2015.

Wilmore walked on to the football team at Tennessee Tech and started at linebacker by his sophomore season. As a senior, he had 143 tackles, which is third on the school’s all-time single-season tackles list. He was inducted into the Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

So, now the SEC has won the space race and other life forms will come to know Les Miles and Steve Spurrier as our leaders, grass as our sustenance and Nick Saban as our arch enemy. Your move, Big Ten.

With assist from rival Bowling Green, Toledo starts camp with safe drinking water

When Toledo’s football team needed a helping hand, an in-state rival answered the call.

Over the weekend, Northeastern Ohio faced a significant water crisis when it was discovered that raised levels of a toxic chemical likely from algae in Lake Erie had contaminated the area’s water supply. This was a major problem as the Rockets approached the start of preseason camp Sunday, until long-time rival Bowling Green offered to help.

According to Sporting News, Toledo director of sports medicine Brian Jones called BGSU’s Alfred Castillo, who holds the same position as Jones, to ask if some staff members could make the 20-minute trip south to fill up some water jugs.

“We said ‘come on down,’” Castillo said. “I know that it’s a tense rivalry, but in my area, we try to take care of the other team as best as possible. Rivalry aside, they needed something. They’d do the same for us.”

The Rockets were able to retrieve all the water they could fit into their vans (“probably 500 gallons” worth) and head back to campus. Jones said both sides realized it’s important to put the on-field rivalry aside and to place the focus on the health of the student-athletes.

(via Sporting News)

“There probably are some rivalries out there that would not do that. If that’s the case, in my world, that’s a damn shame,” Jones said. “People are all, ‘I hate BG,’ and ‘I hate Toledo.’ I’m used to it by now. My issue is this – when it comes down to it, we need to protect the health and safety of these athletes.”

As of Monday morning, water in the Toledo area has been declared safe by the World Health Organization, so Toledo will be able to provide its players with water moving forward.

And if you think the assist from Bowling Green has softened the rivalry in any way, you are mistaken.

“We take care of each other, but yeah, when the ball goes up in the air in November, I want to whoop them,” Jones said.

Toledo has won the last four contests between the two schools, including last season’s 28-25 road win. In 2014, the two teams will square off on Wednesday, November 19.

Toledo is coming off a 7-5 season. Bowling Green, despite the loss to the Rockets, finished 10-4 and beat Northern Illinois to win the MAC title.

VOD: Clemson quarterback Cole Stoudt poses as a mannequin and scares the heebie-jeebies out of people

There is really nothing better than a good prank to start fall camp, and Clemson and quarterback Cole Stoudt pulled off a doozy.

Clemson set up several mannequins in the lobby of their football facility and Stoudt, the Tigers new starting quarterback, dressed similarly and waited for unsuspecting players, family and friends to come strolling by.

The results were hilarious.

Stoudt plays a mannequin very well. He startles several people and even causes one of his teammates to shatter something made of glass, though we’re not totally sure what it is. The best reaction came at the 1:46 mark, when some women are admiring Stoudt and he scares them so badly, he sends one running down the hallway.

Clemson can only hope Stoudt can be as fearsome to opponents on the field.

Charlie Strong removed the Longhorns logo from Texas' helmets (Photos)

New Texas coach Charlie Strong wants his team understand and respect the history of the Longhorns program. To get his point across, he’s taking some of the staples of the program away from players and making them “earn it.”

With preseason camp underway, according to Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.com, Strong has removed the famous Longhorns logo from the helmet of every player.

It’s a strange sight to see the iconic white Texas helmet without its customary Longhorns decal, but if the players’ conduct on and off the field meet Strong’s high standards, the logos will return.

During spring practice in March, Strong prohibited his players from throwing up the classic “hook ‘em horns” hand signal and he even had the Longhorn logo in the locker room roped off so it can’t be walked on.

The former Louisville coach has proven that he means business. In the past few weeks, a significant number of players have been suspended or kicked off the team due to violating team rules. Strong is trying to establish a culture.

He wants to make things clear that Texas players will be held to a higher standard under his leadership. Removing the logos from the helmets is just another way to get his point across.

Arizona starting safety Tra'Mayne Bondurant no longer with team

One of the leaders of Arizona’s defense in 2013 is no longer with the team.

Head coach Rich Rodriguez announced that senior safety Tra’Mayne Bondurant told the coaching staff he was leaving the program Saturday morning. According to Rodriguez, Bondurant was being disciplined for undisclosed reasons, but he did not complete the requirements of his punishment.

“Tra’Maybe Bondurant had some discipline things that he had to do, and he chose to leave the program, so he’s no longer a Wildcat as of today,” Rodriguez said, per the Arizona Daily Star. “You can do the discipline and be part of the team, or, I never lock the doors from the inside out. The doors are never locked.”

Rodriguez said that Bondurant’s status was not permanent and that he had not yet met with the safety one-on-one.

“I wouldn’t say no chance (he doesn’t return) because his position coach has talked to him, but I haven’t,” Rodriguez said. “He had some discipline to do and he decided to quit instead. So that’s where we’re at.”

Bondurant has been a significant contributor for Arizona throughout his career. In three seasons, he has made 30 starts, registering 191 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and seven interceptions. As a junior, Bondurant made 72 tackles – seven for loss – and intercepted four passes. He also picked up two sacks and five pass breakups.

The 5-foot-10, 216-pound Bondurant was a lightly-recruited two-star prospect out of Fairfield, California who immediately made an impact for the Wildcats as a true freshman, making six starts and playing in all 12 games.

Arizona’s season opens at home against UNLV on August 29.

2014 season preview: Five games to watch in week 11

The college football offseason is long and arduous, but its end is almost in sight. We’re going to take a look at five games you have to look forward to for every weekend of the season. (This is also a handy guide to decide how to RSVP for any autumn weddings.)

All times are Eastern and all games are played on Saturday unless otherwise noted.

These games take place the weekend of November 8.

Previously: Week One (August 30) ~ Week Two (September 6) ~ Week Three (September 13) ~ Week Four (September 20) ~ Week Five (September 27) ~ Week Six (October 4) ~ Week Seven (October 11) ~ Week Eight (October 18) ~ Week Nine (October 25) ~ Week Ten (November 1)

Alabama at LSU (TBD)

Early Tiger losses at Georgia and Ole Miss combined with the rise of Auburn to make this match up slightly less important than usual in 2013, but this is still generally where the SEC West is decided. In 2011, LSU won in Tuscaloosa in overtime, winning the division and the conference title (before falling to Alabama in the BCS title game). In 2012, T.J. Yeldon’s late touchdown catch-and-run knocked off the Bayou Bengals in Baton Rouge. Last year’s game wasn’t as close as the LSU defense had absolutely no answer for Alabama’s offense after tying it at 17 in the third quarter, giving up three unanswered touchdowns en route to a 38-17 loss. A.J. McCarron (who threw three touchdowns that night) is gone, but the deadliest of his weapons are all back, including a trio of effective tailbacks (T.J. Yeldon, Derrick Henry, Kenyan Drake), probable top-five pick Amari Cooper at wide receiver and perhaps the best tight end in the country in sophomore O.J. Howard. But the Tigers are at home and return seven defensive starters after the previous offseason’s talent drain. They also have bulked up the offensive firepower, with five-star freshmen at tailback (Leonard Fournette, of the Adrian Peterson comparisons) and wide receiver (Malachi Dupre). Both teams will be coming off byes.

Ohio State at Michigan State (8:00 p.m.)

A rematch of last year’s surprising Big Ten championship tilt, which featured the Spartans blowing a 17-0 lead in impressive fashion before rallying for the final 17 points of the game in a 34-24 victory that ended Urban Meyer’s 24-game Buckeye win streak and denied their conference mates a chance at the BCS title game. Due to the reorganization of Big Ten divisions (farewell, Legends and Leaders), these two are now division rivals competing with mutual enemy Michigan for a berth in the title game. Ohio State returns most of the front seven that couldn’t stop Connor Cook in the fourth quarter but has to rebuild their secondary. It will be interesting when Ohio State has the ball, as their rebuilt offensive line attempts to aid Braxton Miller in moving the ball on a Pat Narduzzi defense missing most of its 2013 stars. Worth noting that Michigan State is coming off a bye.

Baylor at Oklahoma (TBD)

Last year’s clash of top-12 teams turned into the Bears’ hot katana going through a Sooners team that spent most of the game impersonating particularly malleable butter, the final result a 41-12 Baylor win. Oklahoma was still going with Blake Bell at quarterback at that point, and with his switch to tight end and Trevor Knight’s emergence, the Sooners offense should be a little more reliable. (It wouldn’t hurt if they could get a transfer waiver for former top receiver recruit Dorial Green-Beckham, who was booted from Missouri.) Baylor will score points as long as Art Briles walks their sideline, and while he has to replace a few parts, he brings back quarterback Bryce Petty (32 touchdowns, three picks in 2013) and top receiver Antwan Goodley in addition to the enrollment of All-Name first-teamer and blue-chip freshman wideout K.D. Cannon. Baylor has only beaten Oklahoma twice in the series’ history (2011, 2013), both at home.

UCLA running back and linebacker Myles Jack. (Jayne Kamin-Oncea/USA TODAY Sports) UCLA at Washington (TBD)

Just your weekly PAC-12 clash between a team that could be potential playoff contender dealing with a challenger that could easily win ten under the right circumstances. The Bruins prevailed 41-31 in Pasadena last year, but this is the seventh game in a seven-game stretch without a bye for Jim Mora’s crew. UCLA has to replace some stars in their linebacking corps and settle on a running back, but there’s one man who might be right for both jobs: Sophomore Myles Jack, who had 75 tackles, 267 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in one of last season’s most surprising performances. Jack is talking Heisman, and why not? He might not be the only two-way player in the game, as Washington linebacker Shaq Thompson – a five-star junior who’s the team returning tackle leader – is making a case to get some action at running back. This could be the rare occasion where a linebacker stuffs a running back who gets to return the favor on the next possession. This will be a dandy.

Texas A&M at Auburn (TBD)

It may be tough for this year’s game to match last year’s totals (1217 yards and 86 points) or entertainment value (Tre Mason’s touchdown with 1:19 left gave the Tigers at 45-41 road win), but it’s a Gus Malzahn offense versus a Kevin Sumlin offense so expect at least one of these teams to score a whole lot of points. Sumlin is still searching for his Manziel successor, with freshman Kyle Allen and sophomore Kenny Hill expected to split reps during camp. The Aggies will also be without their 2013 Defensive MVP Gavin Stansbury, who recently announced a transfer to Houston.

Other games to consider:

Notre Dame at Arizona State (TBD)

A rematch of last year’s entertaining neutral site clash at Cowboys Stadium, where Notre Dame broke a 27-27 tie to prevail 37-34. This match up was the cause of a minor kerfuffle when former Arizona State athletic director Steve Patterson (now in the same role at Texas) publicly admonished the Irish for possibly maybe trying to move or cancel this game.

Iowa at Minnesota (TBD)

This is Iowa’s toughest road game of the season in a schedule set up perfectly for a run at the Big Ten West. Due to a scheduling quirk, these two also played in Minneapolis last year, a 23-7 Hawkeyes win.

Northern Illinois at Ball State (8:00 p.m., Tuesday)

Weeknight MACtion! Ball State’s only conference loss last year was to Northern Illinois, costing them a trip to the MAC Championship. These two teams have combined to win 41 games over the last two seasons, and while they’re both replacing prolific quarterbacks both have been picked to finish near the top of the MAC again.

Steve Spurrier would rather schedule East Carolina than a 'bottom Big Ten team,' and rightly so

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has never been known to hold back his opinion, and at his media day press conference Sunday, the Gamecocks head coach offered what could be perceived as a slight at the Big Ten.

Spurrier, who is entering his tenth season with the program, was asked about the upcoming vote that would give additional autonomy to the schools in the “Power Five” conferences moving forward. Before voicing his support for providing full cost of attendance for student-athletes, Spurrier focused his answer on non-conference scheduling.

“Well I like the other conferences, too. Heck, those guys deserve the chance to go play just like the big conferences,” Spurrier said. “The SEC – we’ve got some down the line teams just like every conference has down the line teams. The big five conferences all playing each other, I don’t think that makes a lot of sense really. Playing East Carolina is a lot tougher game than maybe picking up one of those bottom Big Ten teams. Plus the fans around here, we’d rather see a team from close by.”

Earlier in the offseason, the SEC voted to keep an eight-game conference schedule. However, starting in 2016, all SEC teams will be required to play a team from one of the other power conferences – the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or Pac-12. Notre Dame also meets that qualification.

Spurrier’s point is that he’d rather schedule a tough regional American Athletic Conference opponent like East Carolina than schedule a lower-level Big Ten opponent like, for example, Purdue or Illinois. ECU is coming off a 10-3 season and is entering its first year in the AAC. The Pirates and Gamecocks will square off on September 6 in Columbia and that game is going to be a lot more exciting for fans in that region of the country than a forced matchup with a Power Five school without a lot of recent success.

To me, Spurrier’s comment is more of a compliment toward ECU than a slight to the Big Ten. Spurrier could have named any of the other conferences there. And like he said, “every conference has down the line teams,” even the SEC.

Additionally, Spurrier is addressing a comment made by Nick Saban a few months ago that schools from the power five should only play other power five schools.

Nick Saban wants Power 5 conferences to play only games against other P5 schools. “Better for fans & for players"

— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) May 27, 2014

So even though his answer didn’t really address the question he was asked, Spurrier’s point is a good one.

Al Golden doesn't rule Kevin Olsen out of Miami's QB competition

Miami coach Al Golden didn’t address the status of quarterback Kevin Olsen during a radio interview with 560 WQAM on Monday morning, but he did say Olsen would still be part of the quarterbacking competition.

“(I am going to) refrain from commenting on any of that as it relates to any suspension,” Golden said. “Anything that comes directly from (assistant athletic director of communications) Chris Freet and (athletic director) Blake James, that’s how we conduct ourselves.”

ESPN, citing the Miami Herald and WQAM radio, said Olsen would be suspended for the season opener against Louisville after failing a drug test.

Olsen was the projected starter after the Hurricanes’ first choice, Ryan Williams, tore his ACL in the spring. Williams is rehabbing, but won’t be ready for the start of the season.

That leaves fifth-year senior transfer Jake Heaps as the next logical option for the Hurricanes. Heaps has started at BYU and Kansas during his career.

Miami opens camp on Tuesday and Golden maintained that four quarterbacks — Olsen, Heaps, Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier — would compete early, but that number would be quickly trimmed to two.

"It's going to be an interesting battle here as we kick off tomorrow," Golden said.

Watch Alabama fans sprint 100 yards for Nick Saban's autograph (Video)

Alabama fans sure do love Nick Saban.

Sunday was “Fan Day” at Bryant-Denny Stadium, where fans get to watch a team practice and then take the field to collect autographs from players and coaches. We already showed you the guy who started camping out for Fan Day over 100 hours before the event began, and thanks to Al.com, we have four different angles (!!!) of footage of Tide fans sprinting over 100 yards for Saban’s signature.

It is a sight to behold.

As you can see, this is serious business.

I think my favorite part of the video is the worker at the very beginning who jumps out of the way to avoid getting trampled.

As you can see by the end of the video, the line eventually stretched long enough to cover the entire field. That’s a pretty long wait just for a man’s signature.

Guess which line is for Nick Saban's autograph. http://ift.tt/1slUPbg

Perhaps you stood in line to see "Guardians of the Galaxy" this weekend. You might have even stood in a long line.

But here's guessing your queue was nowhere near as lengthy as the one for Nick Saban autographs at Bryant-Denny Stadium during the Alabama Crimson Tide's fan day.
