Melvin Gordon congratulated Samaje Perine for breaking his record

Oklahoma's Samaje Perine (32) sprints into the end zone with a touchdown ahead of Kansas' Ben Heeney.(AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki) Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon was the talk of college football when he broke the single-game FBS record by rushing for 408 yards in a win over Nebraska on Nov. 15. Before Gordon broke it, the record stood for 15 years. This time? Seven days.

Oklahoma freshman Samaje Perine surpassed Gordon’s mark with 427 yards in a win over Kansas over the weekend. After initially expressing a bit of disappointment in losing the record, Gordon made sure to send Perine a message of congratulations on Twitter.

“He sent me a direct message, saying congratulations,” Perine said per ESPN.com. “We then joked around a little bit back and forth.”

Gordon made sure to give Perine some advice as well.

“It lasted so short, but I congratulated him and just told him there’s going to be pressure that comes with that,” Gordon said. “People are going to look for you to be explosive and make plays. And I just told him that, ‘Don’t worry about that too much. Don’t worry about the media and the expectations.’”

Gordon said the fact that Perine’s huge day came against a poor Kansas team does not put a negative spin on the record.

“For him to go out there and run for that much, it’s just crazy,” Gordon said. “Regardless of which team it was, rushing for 400-some yards, it’s still not easy. It’s still a Division I team, and that’s just hard to do. So, congrats to him.”

Perine was appreciative of Gordon’s graciousness.

“It was pretty cool,” Perine said. “The fact he reached out to me like that just speaks very highly of his character.”

11 Signs You’re Ready to Go Home for Thanksgiving

Will Muschamp's farewell setting up just like Ron Zook's did a decade ago

Ten years ago, former Florida coach Ron Zook was carried off the field on his player’s shoulders following an upset of a ranked Florida State team.

It was Zook’s final game as Florida’s coach and his unranked Gators did something no one thought was possible.

Could history repeat itself a decade later?

Saturday’s rivalry game against the Seminoles will be Will Muschamp’s final game as the Gators’ coach. An upset of the No. 3 Seminoles would be the fitting ending to what has been a tumultuous four seasons in Gainesville.

During Muschamp’s tenure, he’s taken the Gators to the Sugar Bowl and he’s also notched the first losing season since 1979. He’s had wins against Ohio State, LSU and Florida State, but he’s also lost to then-FCS team Georgia Southern.

Muschamp knows this game means little more than bragging rights and perhaps a slightly better bowl game. The Gators earned their bowl eligibility with a win against Eastern Kentucky last week, but Muschamp won’t coach in that game.

So, like Zook, the Florida State game will be Muschamp’s last chance to end on a high note.

"That ain't going to help us win the game," Muschamp said when he was told of the comparisons between him and Zook. "I can assure you of that. So we'll prepare well and we'll go up there and play well. That's what we need to do."

While Muschamp said he’s not going to get emotional in this game, he acknowledged that his players might. All last week, players attempted to stand up for Muschamp by threating to transfer or follow him to his next destination. Muschamp said he had to diffuse a lot of that because it wasn’t constructive for the team finishing out the season.

Still, players already have expressed what getting this improbable win would mean to them and to Muschamp.

Gators OT DJ Humphries says Muschamp will get carried of field with win: "He ain't got no choice. I'm too strong for him."

— Mark Long (@APMarkLong) November 25, 2014

“They don't need fireworks to get ready for this one,” Muschamp said of Saturday’s game. “They'll be ready to go. Our guys are excited about this game… They'll turn the tape on and understand the type of team we're going against and the preparation that's going to take place.

“I told them in the locker room when the [Eastern Kentucky] game was over. We've had a week to feel sorry about this, that or the other when all we can control is the controllable and that's getting ready for Florida State, a really good football team. We need to prepare better than we did this past week. We need to practice better than we did last week and they all agreed to that. They understood that. We need to prepare much better than we did this past week.”

Florida State’s last loss was to Florida on Nov. 24, 2012. The two programs have gone in two very different directions since and a win by the Gators would be a monumental feat.

Still, Florida State has struggled, especially in the first halves of games this season, and if Florida’s offense can find a little magic and Florida’s defense can play up to its billing, this game could get very interesting.

"Love our chances," defensive end Alex McCalister said. "We've got the whole team clicking and we're going to keep rolling from there."

8 Shows You’ve Never Heard Of That You Should Be Watching on Hulu

Notre Dame DL Jarron Jones, DB Drue Tranquill done for season

Notre Dame defensive line Jarron Jones (94) tackles Northwestern running back Treyvon Green (22) during the first half of an NCAA college football game in South Bend, Ind., Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014. (AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh) Notre Dame will be without three starters on defense for its regular season finale at USC on Saturday afternoon.

Head coach Brian Kelly announced Tuesday that defensive lineman Jarron Jones and safety Drue Tranquill suffered season-ending injuries in the Fighting Irish’s loss to Louisville. Jones, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound junior, suffered a Lisfranc injury in his foot that requires a 4-6 month recovery process.

Jones has started all 11 games for Notre Dame this season, registering 40 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. He is also tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with 7.5.

In addition to Jones, Kelly said that Tranquill, a true freshman, tore an ACL. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Tranquill has played in all 11 games for the Fighting Irish, but recently entered the starting lineup for three of the last four games. In all, Tranquill has 33 total tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and a half sack on the season.

Finally, redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Sheldon Day will miss his second straight game due to a knee sprain. Day started the first 10 games of the season and had 38 tackles – 7.5 for loss – and one sack. Unlike Jones and Tranquill, Kelly expects to have the 6-foot-2, 285-pound Day back for the team’s bowl game.

After starting the season 6-0, the Notre Dame dropped the fourth of its last five games against Louisville. Now 7-4, the Fighting Irish will look to return to the win column against the 19th-ranked Trojans at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday.

Jane the Virgin Recap: 5 Questionable Decisions

Arizona State expects WR Jaelen Strong back for Territorial Cup

Nov 8, 2014; Tempe, AZ, USA; Arizona State Sun Devils wide receiver Jaelen Strong (21) warms up prior to the game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Sun Devil Stadium. (Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports) Arizona State expects top wide receiver Jaelen Strong to return for Saturday’s rivalry game against Arizona. On the other hand, the Wildcats are not as cut and dry concerning the status of starting quarterback Anu Solomon.

In Strong’s case, offensive coordinator Mike Norvell said Monday that Strong has recovered from the concussion that held him out of last Saturday’s game against Washington State. Head coach Todd Graham expressed the same sentiment about the 6-foot-3, 212-pound junior, saying his presence is a huge boost to the Sun Devils’ offense.

“It makes us a lot better,” Graham said per Fox Sports Arizona. “He and D.J. (Foster) are two catalysts in what we do, so it’s going to be great to have him back. That’s going to help us tremendously.”

Strong, a Biletnikoff Award finalist who has registered 71 catches for 982 yards and nine touchdowns this season, suffered the concussion against Oregon State on Nov. 15. He warmed up with the team prior to the WSU game, but the training staff opted to hold him out.

With regards to Solomon (3,216 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions), who missed the second half against Utah on Saturday with an injured ankle, Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez said he would wait until Friday to name a starting quarterback for the Territorial Cup.

“Anu has been banged up for several weeks now, and he’s tried to fight through it,” Rodriguez said per the Arizona Republic. “If he cant go, we’ll go with Jesse (Scroggins), Jerrard (Randall) and Connor (Brewer) and the rest of the guys. We’ll try to get a couple first downs.”

When Solomon went out against the Utes, Scroggins filled in and completed 3-of-5 passes for 64 yards. If Solomon can’t go, Rodriguez expressed confidence in Scroggins.

“He made a couple of nice throws under pressure,” Rodriguez said. “He was composed and was seeing the field the way we wanted to.”

Arizona State is preparing as if Solomon, a dual-threat redshirt freshman, will play on Saturday. Graham spoke highly of Solomon and his ability to run Rodriguez’s offense.

"Man, he's done a tremendous job," Graham said. "Just a great operator of the offense, and his ability to extend plays, he really has a great knack for that. He's very elusive in the pocket, and you can tell he has a mastery of what they're trying to do. He does a great job."

In addition to in-state bragging rights, the Pac-12 South division could be up for grabs in this game. UCLA currently controls its own destiny and will clinch the division if it beats Stanford on Saturday. But if the Bruins lose, the winner of Arizona-Arizona State will represent the South in the Pac-12 title game against Oregon.

Both games kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Pan Trailer Is a (Pretty) Hot Mess

MEAC suspends 21 players after sideline-clearing brawl (Video)

The Mid-American Athletic Conference has suspended 11 players from Norfolk State and 10 from South Carolina State after a sidelines-clearing brawl during the fourth quarter of last week’s game.

Since that was the final game of both seasons, the players, who were not named, will be suspended for their respective 2015 season openers. Any seniors involved faced no punishment.

The altercation began with 12:35 left in the final quarter after Jalen Simmons’ 4-yard touchdown run gave South Carolina State 29-17. No one is sure exactly what started the melee, but after the touchdown, pushing and shoving ensued and punches were thrown.

No players were ejected, but South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough told media after the game he voluntarily removed two of his players.

"I don't know what I saw," Pough said. "The only thing I saw is that kids were just out roughhousing, fighting, that sort of stuff. It was a mess, I can tell you that. It was ugly."

It took more than 15 minutes to clear the field and restart the game.

South Carolina State won 30-20.

UCLA QB Brett Hundley: 'That was probably my last one against USC'

UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley celebrates after UCLA defeated Southern California 38-20 in an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, in Pasadena, Calif. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill) UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley had one of his best games of the season in the Bruins’ resounding victory over rival USC on Saturday night. Now it looks like that will be the last time Hundley faces the Trojans.

The redshirt junior appeared on The Jim Rome Show on Monday and admitted that this is likely his last year in college when asked if Saturday night would be his last game against USC.

“I think the chances are really high,” Hundley said. “The conversation keeps coming up. I’ve got my degree. I’ve done everything I wanted to do here. I’ve left something that’s really, truly great and I feel good. That was probably my last one against USC.”

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. He almost left after last season but decided to return to school to work on certain aspects of his game.

Three weeks ago, Hundley admitted that the pressure of trying to improve for the NFL affected his play early in the season. He said he “changed his game” in order to improve his draft stock instead of doing what made him successful in the first place.

“When you want to go to the next level, you want to show people you can do things,” Hundley said after beating Arizona on Nov. 1. “Sometimes it changed your game, honestly. People don’t realize how much pressure there is, but at the end of the day, when you think about what got you to this point, you have to stay on your foundation. Even though there’s a future ahead that you want to get to, you can’t focus on that, honestly, because it will really throw your game off.”

For the season, Hundley has thrown for 2,873 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 72 percent of his passes. He also added 566 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

Hundley has until January 15 to decide if he will declare of the 2015 draft, but after hearing his comments on Monday, it sounds like he has already made up his mind.

MAC reprimands CMU captains for refusing to shake hands with WMU captains

Western Michigan running back Dareyon Chance (22) tries to rush past the defense of Central Michigan's Jason Wilson (14). (AP Photo/Kalamazoo Gazette-MLive Media Group, Junfu Han) Much like Maryland a few weeks back against Penn State, Central Michigan’s captains refused to shake hands with the captains from rival Western Michigan before the coin toss of Saturday’s game.

Much like the Big Ten when it reprimanded Maryland, the Mid-American Conference announced a public reprimand on Monday night for four CMU team captains – wide receiver Titus Davis, linebacker Justin Cherocci, offensive lineman Andy Phillips and defensive tackle Leterrius Walton – for their actions.

(You can see brief video of the incident here)

“The MAC has determined that the actions of the Central Michigan captains, in intentionally failing to shake hands of the captains from Western Michigan during the pre-game coin toss constituted a violation of the Conference sportsmanship policy,” said MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher in a statement.

Central Michigan removed all four players as captains and the MAC said that it “endorses the institution’s decision” to do so.

“Sportsmanship is among the core values of intercollegiate athletics and a value reinforced by members of the Mid-American Conference,” Steinbrecher said. “While the pre-game handshake is a simple gesture, it is one that is symbolic of the ethics and traditions of the game. Team captains are expected to demonstrate leadership and have a responsibility to pattern behavior that exemplifies the very best values of the team and institution they represent.”

Additionally, per The Morning Sun, CMU athletic director Dave Heeke, head coach Dan Enos and the four captains released separate statements concerning the incident.

Heeke:

“The decision by our captains to not shake hands with Western Michigan after the coin toss is disappointing and does not represent the core values of Central Michigan University and our athletic department. I have spoken with our captains and made it clear that we do not condone this act of poor sportsmanship. I apologize to Western Michigan President John Dunn, Director of Athletics Kathy Beauregard, football head coach P.J. Fleck and the entire WMU football program for the behavior of our captains on Saturday.”

Enos:

“Our captains’ actions after the coin toss on Saturday goes against everything we teach about respecting our opponents. Being a captain is a privilege, and because of the actions of these four individuals, we have decided to remove them as captains. Our rivalry with Western Michigan is intense, but it must always be built on respect for each other’s programs. This action took the rivalry too far, and I want to apologize to WMU coaches and student-athletes.”

Former captains Cherocci, Phillips, Davis and Walton:

“We want to apologize to Western Michigan for not shaking hands after the coin toss on Saturday. What we did was disrespectful. We have reached out to coach Fleck and director of Athletics Kathy Beauregard today and apologized for our actions. We also apologize to our teammates, coaches and the entire university for not showing the leadership that is true CMU.”

Western Michigan won the game 32-20 – its sixth straight win – and improved to 8-3 (6-1 MAC) on the season. Central Michigan dropped to 7-5 (5-3 MAC).

Auburn's Davonte Lambert 'probably out' for Iron Bowl

Oct 25, 2014; Auburn, AL, USA; South Carolina Gamecocks running back Mike Davis (28) runs the ball past Auburn Tigers defensive lineman DaVonte Lambert (86) during the first half at Jordan Hare Stadium. (Shanna Lockwood-USA TODAY Sports) Auburn could be without two of its top contributors against Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

Defensive end Davonte Lambert, the team’s leader in sacks, went down with a left leg injury on the first defensive play of the Tigers’ 31-7 win over Samford on Saturday. The 6-foot-2, 293-pound junior was injured making a tackle, then went to the locker room and did not return to the field.

“He’s probably out this week,” Auburn defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson said Sunday, per the Montgomery Advertiser. “We don’t know for sure.”

Lambert, a junior college transfer, has 24 tackles, including seven for loss, and a team high 3.5 sacks on the season for the 8-3 Tigers. With it looking like Lambert will miss Saturday’s big game, Johnson said senior Gabe Wright will probably move out to end. Freshman Raashed Kennion could also see increased action.

“We’ve had Gabe and Montravius (Adams) out there before and I’m sure they’ll have to be repped and be ready to go,” Johnson said. “Raashed Kennion came in Saturday night and got almost basically his baptism as far as getting to play some. Whether he’ll be up for this or not, I don’t know.”

In addition to Lambert, leading receiver D’haquille Williams may not be ready to play against the Crimson Tide. He has missed the last two games with a sprained right MCL and is currently considered day-to-day.

“He’s getting better,” offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said. “The guys we held (out), we felt like it was the right decision, and we feel like it’s going to increase their chances of playing this week. We’ll just know when we get out there (Monday) and get after it and see where they’re at.”

Williams, a junior, leads the Tigers with 38 catches, 609 yards and five touchdowns on the season. He, along with Ricardo Louis – who was also held out against Samford – would provide a big boost for Auburn’s offense against top-ranked Alabama.

"It changes things a lot when you've got guys like (Williams) or even Ricardo and those guys out there," Lashlee said. “The more weapons you have, the more honest the defense has to play you. We want to be full strength, and we're optimistic we will be."

Here's the Taiwanese Animators' take on Samaje Perine's record-breaking day on Saturday. Perine rushed for 427 yards, breaking Melvin Gordon's week-old record that he had set against Nebraska.

It's hard to watch the video and not laugh, especially the part about the bad punt snap for Kansas. And if the person with the cameo at the end of the video breaks the rushing record on Saturday, well, that's the fastest recovery to an ACL injury we've ever seen.

This Virginia fan and his fake goose enjoyed win over Miami

When you've had a long, fun-filled day in college and your team is in the midst of a blowout victory, you need to let goose, er, let loose in the fourth quarter.

As Virginia played Journey over the loudspeakers at the stadium Saturday night, this Virginia fan sang along as loud as he could, even without a microphone. Why? Because he had a fake goose. We all wish we could go on stage with a goose.
