UCLA beats Cal after late interception is upheld (GIF)
UCLA beat Cal 36-34 after an interception by Marcus Rios was upheld via replay review.
Two plays prior, Cal converted a fourth down and got to the UCLA 39-yard-line with over a minute left. After a running play on first down that gained three yards, Cal QB Jared Goff went deep on second down and Rios was right there.
This is how close it was.
The interception was called an interception on the field and upheld via replay review. While Rios' toes aren't visible, you can see that his foot was parallel to the sideline just briefly before he lost traction on the turf and his right foot went out-of-bounds.
With 3:40 to go in the fourth quarter, UCLA took the lead on a 26-yard field goal by Ka'imi Fairbairn, almost three minutes after Cal went ahead for the first time since the second quarter on a 23-yard touchdown from Goff to Kenny Lawler.
In the fourth quarter, WR Trevor Davis was taken off on a stretcher after taking a knee to the head on a kick return. Davis was down for an extended period of time and gave a thumbs up as he was being taken off the field. On the aforementioned fourth down play on Cal's final drive, WR Chris Harper stayed down after he was hit in the head on a tackle. Harper walked off the field.

TCU rebounds with 42-9 thrashing of Oklahoma State
TCU’s dream of being a Big 12 champion and representing the conference in the College Football Playoff took a major step forward on Saturday after a 42-9 dismantling of Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys were one of two Big 12 teams remaining that hadn’t lost a conference game. With the loss, Kansas State is the only team unbeaten in Big 12 play.
TCU was able to shake off a heartbreaking loss to Baylor last week in which the Horned Frogs blew a 21-point lead in the final 11 minutes of the game to lose on a last-second field goal.
But if the Horned Frogs were still hurting from that loss, they didn’t show it.
The offense, led by quarterback Trevone Boykin, who injured his non-throwing wrist last week, was as potent as it’s been all season long. The Horned Frogs rolled up 675 yards of total offense and the defense limited the Cowboys offense, which came into the game averaging 37.2 points per game, to just three field goals.
Even after the collapse against Baylor, no one doubted that TCU was one of the top teams in the Big 12. With Baylor losing to West Virginia and TCU still to play Kansas State, all of the goals are still out there for the Horned Frogs.
It’s hard not to argue that the teams wearing purple uniforms are the best in the Big 12 right now.

Ohio State WR Evan Spencer pulls in crazy one-handed TD catch (GIF)
Ohio State had absolutely no trouble handling Rutgers at home Saturday afternoon, and a highlight reel touchdown catch made by senior Evan Spencer put the cap on what will be a blowout win.
Already up 49-10 late in the third quarter, the Buckeyes were in the red zone again. On a second down play from the 11-yard line, quarterback J.T. Barrett took a shotgun snap and faked a handoff. He then saw Spencer open on a seam route. Barrett led Spencer a bit too much, but the 6-foot-2, 208-pound Spencer leaped and hauled in the pass with one handed.
Take a look:
The touchdown was the fifth of the day for Barrett (three throwing, two rushing) and the second touchdown of the season for Spencer.
The victory improves Ohio State’s record to 5-1 and 2-0 in Big Ten play heading into next Saturday’s road matchup at Penn State.

Cal WR Chris Harper hauls in awesome one-handed TD catch (GIFs)
At 4-2, Cal is a much-improved team in 2014, but it is facing its toughest test of the year at home Saturday against UCLA. Chris Harper, a junior wide receiver for the Bears, is doing all he can help Cal against the Bruins, an in-state Pac-12 rival.
Midway through the second quarter, the Bears had great field position at the Bruins 20-yard line after a muffed punt. Two plays later, on a 2nd-and-goal from the 7-yard line, Cal QB Luke Rubenzer looked toward Harper in the end zone.
Harper fought through a pass interference call and hauled in the pass with one hand for a touchdown, putting Cal ahead 14-10.
At just 5-foot-11, Harper showed impressive leaping ability and great concentration for his fourth touchdown grab of the year.
After Harper’s touchdown, UCLA responded by closing out the half with two touchdowns to take a 24-14 halftime lead. Cal isn’t going down quietly, though. The Bears opened up the second half with a 2-yard touchdown run by Daniel Lasco to cut the deficit to 24-21.
We’ve got a long way to go before this one is decided.

Tulane QB Nick Montana spikes ball on fourth down (Video)
Down 13-3 to UCF late in the first half, Tulane regained possession with 2:18 to go in the first half and was hoping to close the gap before halftime. What senior quarterback Nick Montana did was probably not in the Green Wave’s plans.
After a handful of runs and a few completions, Montana led the Green Wave down to the UCF 36-yard line, but the team burned its final timeout with 17 seconds to go before a third-and-six play. On the ensuing third down play, Montana, the son of San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana, found wideout Teddy Veal for five yards, but Veal could not get out of bounds.
It was now fourth-and-one and the clock was quickly ticking down. Montana apparently had no idea what down it was, because he did this:
Yep. He spiked the ball on fourth down, resulting in a turnover on downs.
You can’t do that, Nick!
Instead of possibly hustling the field goal unit out onto the field, Tulane ended the half with no points and ended up losing 20-13 to drop to 2-5 on the season.

West Virginia defeats No. 4 Baylor 41-27 as Bears rack up penalty yards
Baylor set a Big 12 record on Saturday at West Virginia. No, it wasn't for points or yards. Well, OK, it was for yards. Penalty yards.
The Bears committed an astounding 18 penalties for 215 yards in a 41-27 upset loss at West Virginia. While Baylor was the most-penalized team in the country last season and near the top of the penalty chart again this season, the barrage was absolutely wild. DB Xavien Howard committed five personal foul penalties and a face mask penalty on West Virginia WR Kevin White, the leading WR in the country.
White entered the game with 888 receiving yards and was unstoppable. In addition to the six fouls, he had eight catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns. The second touchdown came with the score tied at 27-27 in the fourth quarter. And, fittingly, with a pass interference penalty by Howard too. White broke the tie and gave West Virginia the lead for good with a nifty one-handed touchdown catch.
Perhaps all the penalties affected Baylor coach Art Briles' thinking. Usually one of the most aggressive coaches in college football, Baylor was facing a 4th-and-8 from its own 45-yard-line with over 5:30 to go in the fourth quarter and trailing 41-27. Instead of going for the conversion, Briles elected to punt and attempt to pin West Virginia deep.
While Baylor did get the ball back with 4:30 left, it didn't score on the drive. Given the context of the game, and Baylor's propensity for penalties, you have to wonder if the odds of converting the fourth down and scoring to pull the deficit to seven were better than punting and playing for two touchdowns, even with all three timeouts.
Undefeated and with games against Oklahoma State and Kansas State at home, Baylor was the favorite for the Big 12 title and the conference's best shot to make it to the College Football Playoff entering Saturday. While the presence of those games doesn't remove Baylor from favorite status in the Big 12, it's Playoff chances, and the Playoff chances of the Big 12 itself, are now teetering.
And as the Playoff hopes took a hit, so did QB Bryce Petty's Heisman chances. Baylor's QB was outplayed by WVU Clint Trickett, who rebounded from an early interception to finish 23-35 passing for 322 yards and three touchdowns. Petty was 16-36 for 223 yards and two touchdowns.

Oklahoma's unexpected kicking woes help Kansas State to a big win
Prior to the season, Oklahoma kicker Michael Hunnicutt shared a photo of his team iPad, which had just one instruction — kick the ball through the uprights.
Apparently Hunnicutt, who is considered one of the best kickers in the nation, misplaced that playbook prior to Saturday’s game against Kansas State because he missed two field goals, including a chip shot he pushed left, and had an extra point blocked to help Kansas State to a 31-30 win.
The victory keeps the Wildcats undefeated in conference play while it puts the Sooners on the outside looking in with two conference losses.
Kansas State is now in the hunt for a Big 12 title and possibly a spot in the College Fotball Playoff, which seems a little surreal considering even going into this game the Wildcats were not being talked about as contenders. Most of the Big 12 talk centered on Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma while the Wildcats lurked in the shadows, discounted because of their nonconference loss to Auburn.
But this is a good Kansas State team that has a strong offense, led by quarterback Jake Waters, who had 276 total yards and three scores in the win, and a defense that did enough to quiet an Oklahoma offense that has struggled with consistency in the past few weeks.
But what has been consistent for the Sooners has been its kicking game. Hunnicutt even tied the record for most field goals in Big 12 history after making his first kick. But it was all downhill from there. And on the last missed field goal, a kick that would have given the Sooners the lead late, Hunnicutt’s mechanics looked amiss, which could be a sign of bigger issues for the Sooners' kicking game down the road.
Right now, Oklahoma has gone from a team many saw competing in the playoff to an also-ran in a tough conference.
As for Kansas State, it still has its toughest conference football ahead of it. It hosts a feisty Texas defense next week, and still has to face Oklahoma State, TCU, West Virginia and Baylor. So, its place at the top of the Big 12 standings might be short-lived.
Still, if the Wildcats play like they have so far in Big 12 play, they could be the conference’s unexpected representation in the playoff when everything shakes out.

Oklahoma FB Aaron Ripkowski ejected for targeting on block (GIF)
Saturday's first targeting ejection came from an offensive player.
Oklahoma FB Aaron Ripkowski was called for targeting against Kansas State DE Ryan Mueller when he delivered a block to Mueller's head by lowering the crown of his helmet.
Targeting is not limited to defensive players. The rule states that "no player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, fist, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul." There was no disputing the call on Ripkowski. Thankfully, Mueller got up immediately from the hit.
OU QB Trevor Knight was injured on the play as well. As Knight dove to the ground, he was hit just after he was down and his left arm got pinched between himself and the ground. After briefly going to the locker room, Knight returned to the field and then to the game on Oklahoma's next offensive possession. He was replaced after the injury by Cody Thomas. OU finished the drive that Knight was hurt on with a touchdown.
