Starting New Mexico lineman Jamal Price arrested, suspended by team
New Mexico’s Jamal Price, a senior starting offensive lineman, was arrested and is reportedly facing charges of “breaking and entering” and “conspiracy to commit a fourth-degree felony” following an incident Monday night.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, Price allegedly pushed his girlfriend, Lobos women’s basketball player Kadijah Shumpert, in a “dispute over an ‘Apple’ television.” The criminal complaint said that Shumpert called police saying that Price “had broken into her residence” along with another man. Additionally, an officer said that “Shumpert’s hand was bleeding” and that there was “blood on the wall in an entry way.”
Head coach Bob Davie said Tuesday that Price has been suspended from the team following the incident. Price is now the third New Mexico player to be suspended by Davie this offseason. Running back Crusoe Gongbay and cornerback SaQwan Edwards were arrested in a rape case in April, but the charges were dropped.
The team began camp for the 2014 season Wednesday.
“I do think there is a level of frustration that’s shared by the coaches and the players,” Davie said of the arrests. “In fact, I know that. I know guys want to make the right decision. They understand what it takes to make the right decision and they are hurt by this. I know our football team is hurt by this.”
The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Price has played in 34 games in his New Mexico career, making 13 starts. As a junior, Price started 10 games at right guard.

Random offseason tweet of the day: Miami's new helmets are awesome (Photo)
Welcome to our Dr. Saturday feature titled "Random offseason tweet of the day." With real games still weeks away, coaches and players will be tweeting about non-football-related things as the season approaches. In this space, we'll try to find the funniest and goofiest tweets of the day. If you see something, don't hesitate to send it to us.
After teasing fans and players for months, Miami unveiled four new interchangeable uniform combinations in April. The school showed off the variety of different combinations of pants, jerseys and helmets the players could wear on gameday on a specially-made website, but Wednesday, the Canes finally gave us a closer look at two of the team’s more intriguing options.
Let me introduce to you the “juice” and “surge” helmets. They are beauties.

— Hurricanes Football (@CanesFootball) July 30, 2014
White “stormtrooper” and gray “smoke” helmets are also at the Hurricanes’ disposal and the ‘Canes’ official Twitter account tweeted to ESPN’s Darren Rovell that “players and coaches will decide” the uniform combinations prior to each game.
They have a quite a collection to choose from.

— Miami Hurricanes (@MiamiHurricanes) April 13, 2014
The new uniforms are still representative of the classic Miami look, but at the same time, they have a sharp, modern feel. Uniforms can be a big deal to players and recruits, as evidenced by the team’s reaction to the uniform reveal back in April.
Miami, in its fourth season under Al Golden, will kick off the 2014 season with a Monday night matchup at Louisville – the Cardinals’ first game in the ACC.

Texas S Josh Turner reportedly still part of the team
Josh Turner has not been dismissed from Texas' football team.
On Friday, it was reported that Turner was one of four Longhorns dismissed by coach Charlie Strong. However Turner hadn't apparently had the chance to meet with Strong and on Wednesday, Orangebloods.com reported that Turner was still part of the team.
"He's grateful to be part of the program, to have the opportunity to finish his degree. He's close to getting his degree and he's very happy about that," Kevin Cox, a former high school football coach of Turner's told Orangebloods. "He's excited about having the chance to better himself as a person and a student.
"He's still on the team and he's very thankful that things turned out the way they have."
A senior in 2014, Turner was set to start at safety for Texas. He had 37 tackles in 12 games last season.
RB Joe Bergeron was one of the players dismissed from the team last week and he's received his unconditional release from the school. According to Orangebloods, Bergeron attempted to appeal his dismissal from the school and the appeal was denied.

Barry Alvarez says LSU and Alabama 'weren't interested' in home-and-home series with Wisconsin
Wisconsin will open both its 2014 and 2016 seasons with neutral site games against LSU, but Badgers athletic director Barry Alvarez had hoped the two-game series would be played under different circumstances.
Alvarez, the long-time Badgers head coach who took over as AD in 2012, told the Wisconsin State Journal at Big Ten Media Days that he tried to schedule a home-and-home series with LSU where the Badgers would travel to Baton Rouge in 2014 and the Tigers would make the trek north to Camp Randall Stadium in 2016.
LSU, however, “wasn’t interested” in playing the games on campus in a traditional home-and-home arrangement, Alvarez said.
“They wouldn’t tell you why. They just weren’t interested.”
Instead, the 2014 contest will be played in Houston, Texas, at NRG Stadium. In 2016, the Badgers and Tigers will meet for the first college football game at Lambeau Field since 1983.
Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen would have preferred the games being played on campus, too.
“As it went forward, it was very obvious that if we were going to play these games, they were going to get played on a neutral field,” Andersen said. “But you would love to play it in Camp Randall. Going down to Death Valley would be a great experience, a very difficult place to play.”
Additionally, Wisconsin will open its 2015 season with another neutral site game against Alabama at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Alvarez said the Crimson Tide had no interest in traveling to Wisconsin either, but he is currently in the “infant stages” of setting up a home-and-home arrangement with another SEC school. Before you begin to wonder, Alvarez says it’s not former UW coach Bret Bielema’s Arkansas program.
With the institution of the College Football Playoff in 2014, more emphasis will be placed on strength of schedule. Alvarez, who is on the CFP selection committee, and Andersen said that is the main motivation behind scheduling SEC opponents.
Like Andersen said, these types of games being played on a school’s home turf would create an awful lot of excitement. But at the same time, neutral site games are better than the usual non-competitive non-conference matchups from power conference teams we’ve seen in years past.

VOD: 340-pound DL and 170-pound RB combine for hilarious chest bump
At 342 pounds, 6-foot-4 Ohio State junior defensive lineman Chris Carter is the second heaviest player on the Buckeyes’ roster. Conversely, 5-foot-7 sophomore running back Devonte Butler is the lightest player on the roster at 170 pounds.
When you combine those two players together for a chest bump, the results aren’t pretty, but they are hilarious.
Take a look.
The video above was recorded Wednesday at Ohio State’s photo day. As evidenced by these photos from OSU’s Twitter account, Carter can look intimidating, but he can’t hold that mean mug for too long.

2014 season preview: Five games to watch in week 8
The college football offseason is long and arduous, but its end is almost in sight. We’re going to take a look at five games you have to look forward to for every weekend of the season. (This is also a handy guide to decide how to RSVP for any autumn weddings.)
All times are Eastern and all games are played on Saturday unless otherwise noted.
These games take place the weekend of October 18.
Previously: Week One (August 30) ~ Week Two (September 6) ~ Week Three (September 13) ~ Week Four (September 20) ~ Week Five (September 27) ~ Week Six (October 4) ~ Week Seven (October 11)
Notre Dame at Florida State (TBD)
Should Notre Dame make it into this game with a respectable record (possible but not easy with games against Michigan, Stanford and North Carolina), you can bet a decent amount “College GameDay” will be bringing the show to Tallahassee. Why? Because the very first “GameDay” road show was in South Bend for Noles/Irish in 1993, and they were there in 2002 when FSU hosted ND. Although there is likely no way to stop Jameis Winston, the Irish may have a weapon capable of at least slowing him down in linebacker Jaylon Smith. Smith, a five-star sophomore gaining some preseason All-American accolades, is comfortable attacking or dropping back into space to make plays like this. He’ll need to play like a superstar if the Irish hope to slow down Winston, who gets four offensive line starters back in addition to his leading receiver and top tight end Nick O’ Leary. Jimbo Fisher’s squad will likely be riding a 22-game winning streak into this game.
Kansas State at Oklahoma (TBD)
Last time these two met in Norman was in 2012, when the 16-point underdog Wildcats stunned the sixth-ranked Sooners 24-19 on their way to the Big 12 title. Oklahoma gained a measure of revenge last year (41-31 in Manhattan), but did so behind 200 yards on the ground from running back Brennan Clay, who is projected to make the Denver Broncos roster this fall. Replacing Clay will likely be sophomore Keith Ford, a top-fifty recruit from Texas who averaged 5.8 yards per carry on only 23 carries last year. (Sophomore Alex Ross, another four-star option, will also likely see plenty of touches.) Kansas State only returns 11 starters but Bill Snyder has his usual assortment of JUCO transfers coming in to backfill the roster, including big Terrell Clinkscales, a four-star defensive tackle from Dodge City Community College.
Texas A&M at Alabama (TBD)
Unlikely this clash maintains the drama of the two Johnny Manziel games (a 29-24 Aggies win in Tuscaloosa in 2012, a 49-42 Tide victory in College Station last year), but it’s late enough in the season that Kevin Sumlin will have had a chance to get presumed start Kyle Allen up to speed in his offense. Then again, no matter how talented Allen is or how good Sumlin is at running an offense, a true freshman coming into Bryant-Denny Stadium will be a tough task. (Manziel was at least a redshirt freshman when he knocked off the Tide on the road in November.) Looming as potential superstars and Aggie tormentors on the Tide defense are all-everything junior safety Landon Collins (the team’s second-leading tackler in 2013) and sophomore end A’Shawn Robinson, who managed five and a half sacks as a true freshman.
Washington at Oregon (TBD)
One of the oldest and most frequently played rivalries in the land (105 meetings since the first one in 1900), this northwest border war had been consistently dominated by Washington, who had a 58-33-5 advantage. That was the series record going into the 2004 game and Oregon hasn’t lost since, reeling off ten straight, all by double digits. Chris Petersen had some success against the Ducks while at Boise and now has a roster with more recruiting stars than anything he assembled at the height of blue field fever, which could swing this series back into competitive territory. The Ducks are plenty capable of handling the hypothetically resurgent Huskies, as potential top NFL draft pick Marcus Mariota’s return for his redshirt junior season gives them perhaps the perfect player to orchestrate Mark Helfrich’s offense (Mariota shined last year with a 31:4 touchdown-to-interception ratio). Probably worth noting that Oregon will be coming off a trip to UCLA while Washington has a rebuilding Cal team the week prior.
Stanford at Arizona State (TBD)
This is a rematch of last year’s PAC-12 title game where the Cardinals rolled the Sun Devils 38-14 in Tempe, their second victory over ASU that season. That game clinched Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan’s second conference championship in as many years as starter, as the junior from Virginia completed a second season doing something Andrew Luck couldn’t quite manage in his illustrious career: Beating Oregon on the way to a PAC-12 title and the Rose Bowl. Hogan matches up against another accomplished quarterback in Taylor Kelly, who has 67 total touchdowns in two years as a Sun Devil starter and a career completion percentage of 64.6. Arizona State will be coming off a bye while Stanford is smack in the middle of a very challenging stretch (at Washington, at Notre Dame, Washington State, at Arizona State, Oregon State, at Oregon).
Other games to consider:
Virgina Tech at Pittsburgh (7:30 p.m., Thursday)
Two old Big East rivals and potential contenders in the clustered Coastal Division, this will be Pitt quarterback Chad Voytik’s first action against a Frank Beamer/Bud Foster defense. He’ll be able to lean on eight returning offensive starters but will need some protection against Hokie defensive tackle Luther Maddy, who accrued six and a half sacks and another 16 QB hits in 2013.
Fresno State at Boise State (8:00 p.m., Friday)
Your two Mountain West division favorites and the purveyors of last year’s 41-40 dandy, a Bulldogs comeback that mainly rode the arm of departed quarterback Derek Carr (460 yards and 4 touchdowns). Expect plenty of points as you start your weekend.
Michigan State at Indiana (TBD)
Indiana had some success moving the ball against Sparty’s ridiculous defense last year (28 points in a 42-28 defeat in East Lansing), and get Mark Dantonio’s reigning Big Ten champs at home with 17 returning starters. The Spartans now share a division with Ohio State, meaning they can’t avoid many (if any) slip-ups against some of their less regarded conference foes.
Nebraska at Northwestern (7:30 p.m.)
Unlikely to match the drama of last year, where Nebraska contributed to Northwestern’s nightmare season with a Hail Mary touchdown grab as time expired. A big game in what could be a clustered Big Ten West.
Missouri at Florida (TBD)
This is the end of an important stretch for the Gators, who travel to Tennessee before hosting LSU and Missouri, the reigning SEC East champs who blasted Florida 36-17 in Columbia last year.

Iowa to give free tuition to five students who purchase football tickets
As declining student attendance at college football games becomes a bigger and bigger issue, Iowa is giving five students free tuition if they buy season tickets.
The deadline for Iowa students to buy season tickets is Friday and on Tuesday, the school announced the promotion to give randomly-selected students free tuition. The prizes are based off of current in-state tuition rates and the value is estimated at $8,000.
"We want students in Kinnick Stadium, and the staff has spent the year listening and planning ways to increase the fun and excitement. A loud and active student section is such an important part of the game day experience," Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said in a statement.
In addition to the free tuition, students will also be eligible to win grocery gift cards and free textbooks and supplies. Any student who purchases season tickets by the deadline is eligible to win.
Getting students to come to games is becoming harder for many schools and universities because of the potential difficulty to get cell service and the ubiquity of high-definition televisions. With almost every game on television and the rise in technology and the second-screen experience while watching sports, the allure of watching games in person isn't as strong as it once was for some.
Heck, New Mexico State even offered students cash prizes last season if they stayed through games.
Iowa is also having a special tailgate for students before each game that includes cornhole, music, body paint and face tattoos. Music and games could have simply been enough. The addition of body paint and face tattoos is a big bonus. And we have another idea. Iowa OT Brandon Scherff should power clean a car in the parking lot before every game to fire up the crowd.
In case you were wondering, Iowa's tickets are reasonably-priced. Students can pick either six or seven-game packages and tickets are $25 per game.

Herb Hand wants recruits to know that social media can decide a scholarship offer
Possible Penn State recruits should be quite cognizant of what they're posting to Facebook and Twitter and the perceptions that the messages create.
Penn State offensive line coach Herb Hand tweeted Wednesday morning that the school dropped a recruit because of his social media presence.
Dropped another prospect this AM due to his social media presence...Actually glad I got to see the 'real' person before we offered him.
— Herb Hand (@CoachHand) July 30, 2014
Not only does the tweet serve as a subtle message to the recruit that Penn State is now not pursuing, but it doubles as a warning to all other Penn State recruits that coaches are watching what they post. Oh, and it's also a way for Penn State to say that they won't just take any recruit.
Is it an effective message? We'll see. Saying whatever you want without fear of consequences on social media is an enticing proposition, especially for teenagers. But as Hand has said before, Penn State says it's watching everything.

Georgia Tech recruit reportedly suffers fractured skull in ATV accident
Georgia Tech commit Jaylend Ratliffe reportedly suffered a fractured skull in an ATV accident.
According to JacketsOnline.com, Ratliffe "suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries according to a source close to the situation and Jaylend was airlifted to Charlotte for surgery for bleeding on the brain."
He was reportedly a passenger on the ATV with "several" of his Scotland High School teammates.
910Preps.com reported that Ratliffe was listed in critical, but stable condition and was responsive to commands and able to move his arms and legs. The site also said the ATV flipped over in the accident.
Ratliffe is listed as a three-star recruit according to Rivals and the No. 20 dual-threat quarterback in the country. He was the third commitment to Georgia Tech for 2015 and led his team to the North Carolina Class 4A state championship in 2013.
