UAB checking into allegation of sports betting by DE Chris Rabb

UAB said it is looking into an allegation that defensive end Chris Rabb, a friend of Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, placed a $5,500 bet on the Seminoles to be tied or losing at halftime of last Thursday's game against Louisville.

"We're are aware of the allegation and looking into the matter," UAB athletic director Brian Mackin said in a statement via AL.com. "That is the only comment we will have at this time."

Before FSU came back to win 42-31, the Seminoles were down 21-7 after the first two quarters. A report said that Winston had knowledge of the bet, as he and Rabb share a gambling account, and was shaving points to get his friend the win. Rabb allegedly would have won $5,000 off his bet (plus his money back) by taking Louisville +1 in the first half. Sports wagering by athletes is against NCAA rules. Point shaving is a crime.

Rabb and Winston went to the same high school in Hueytown, Ala., and were both products of the class of 2012.

TMZ first reported that UAB was looking into the allegations. Click here for a previous attempt to interview the person behind the site where the original report was posted. The site has previously made allegations about the betting habits of a former ACC player.

While Florida State struggled in the first half, it's a stretch to link his struggles to a betting connection. Tomahawk Nation has a good breakdown of Winston's first half here.

We'll see how UAB's investigation turns out.

Spread Options: Dr. Saturday's Week 11 picks against the spread

Oh, the things we would give for back-to-back weeks above .500. After going 5-5 last week, the tally is 42-57-1 on the year.

Iowa at Minnesota (OVER 44), Noon, ET: Before two weeks ago, Minnesota would seem to be the pick here because the Gophers are at home. But after the loss to Illinois, it's tough to pick Minnesota. Iowa's offense has also exploded over the last three games, scoring at least 31 points in each. This game is a pick'em for a reason. Take the over.

Georgia at Kentucky (+10), Noon, ET: Raise your hand if you have faith in Georgia after what happened in Jacksonville last week. OK, we see you, Bulldog fans. Put them down. Kentucky's only home loss this season was to Mississippi State, a game that was close until those Bulldogs salted it away late. If Georgia is to win and cover, QB Hutson Mason is going to have to throw the ball down the field.

Baylor (+5) at Oklahoma, Noon, ET: Baylor's plan is to win this game and then root like hell for Kansas State against TCU, knowing that the Bears and Wildcats meet on the final week of the season. We'll fully admit that the confidence in Baylor winning this game isn't incredibly high, but it's hard to see Oklahoma blowing out the Bears. Baylor will not self-destruct with penalties like it did in Morgantown, and QB Bryce Petty and RB Shock Linwood have good days against Oklahoma's defense.

Duke (-3.5) at Syracuse, 12:30 ET: We're going to ride the Duke train as long as we can. The Blue Devils are on track for a rematch with Florida State in the ACC title game and an 11-1 regular season. There's no derailing that this week. Syracuse is likely down to its third-string QB, Austin Wilson. Terrel Hunt has a broken leg and AJ Long is having numbness in his throwing arm.

West Virginia (-3) at Texas, 3:30 p.m. ET: While the Mountaineers are coming off a heartbreaking loss to TCU at home, Texas demolished Texas Tech on the road. But Texas Tech was down to a walk-on QB and, well, the Red Raiders simply aren't good. Texas needs a really good game from QB Tyrone Swoopes to have a chance as the defense won't be able to shut down West Virginia. The likeliness of Texas' offense performing well is why we like West Virginia.

Iowa State (-3.5) at Kansas, 3:30 p.m. ET: This is both teams' best chance for a conference win this season. And it may be a game that decides the fate of both coaches as well. ISU's Paul Rhoads would find the seat he's on incredibly toasty if the Cyclones lose to Kansas, and if interim coach Clint Bowen wants a shot at the permanent position in charge of the Jayhawks, he needs to win this game, especially at home. While KU isn't as brutal as it has been, ISU is the better team.

Washington State at Oregon State (-8), 4 p.m. ET: An intriguing game between quarterbacks Connor Halliday and Sean Mannion is now missing Halliday after the gruesome injury he suffered against USC. While Oregon State has been a shell this season of what it was in the first half of 2013, the 4-4 Beavers absolutely need this game for any hopes of bowl eligibility.

UCLA at Washington (+6.5), 7 p.m. ET: Last week's loss against the Bruins isn't fazing us. This is actually a straight-up upset pick too. Both teams have battled inconsistency this season and since Washington is at home, we're giving the Huskies the edge.

Kansas State at TCU (-6), 7:30 p.m. ET: We wrote about the battle of turnovers that's likely to decide the game earlier in the week, and our hunch is that Kansas State commits a costly one. The Wildcats are extremely good at protecting the ball and it would be very Bill Snyder-esque if TCU thoroughly outgains Kansas State and the Wildcats win. But Trevone Boykin is the best player on the field and this will be his Heisman moment.

Ohio State at Michigan State (-3.5), 8 p.m. ET: Ohio State's reputation is perhaps being unfairly criticized because its lone loss is to Virginia Tech, a team that has played incredibly poorly of late. However, that's not why we're picking against OSU here. Michigan State's offense is better than it was in 2014 thanks to the improvement of Connor Cook, and Ohio State's defense isn't as strong as it was in 2013. While J.T. Barrett will have some success against MSU's defense, Cook is the difference in a relatively easy win for the Spartans.

Reports: Attorney for Jameis Winston asks to delay student conduct hearing

The attorney representing Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston asked the university to delay the student conduct hearing currently scheduled for the week of Nov. 17. Winston, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner, could face up to four violations of the university’s code of conduct stemming from an alleged sexual assault in December 2012.

According to ESPN.com, David Cornwell, Winston’s attorney, “requested the delay in a letter he sent to Florida State officials on Thursday.”

It is not known if the university has made a decision whether or not to grant Cornwell's request.

John Clune, an attorney for Winston’s accuser, told the Tampa Bay Times that Cornwell said he needs “more time to prepare for the case.”

“Mr. Cornwell obviously doesn’t want his client to ever do this hearing,” Clune said.

The school’s student conduct rules say a hearing can potentially proceed without Winston in attendance. From ESPN.com:

Under Florida State's student conduct rules and regulations, the university can proceed with a hearing even if Winston does not attend. Under the rules, Winston and the woman can have their attorneys advise them during the hearing, but the attorneys are not allowed to speak on their clients' behalf. Winston is not obligated to answer any or all questions from the independent hearing observer.

Retired Florida Supreme Court chief justice Major Harding will preside over the hearing.

The Seminoles, ranked No. 2 in the country, host Virginia on Saturday.

Louisville standout LB Lorenzo Mauldin to miss Boston College game

Louisville (6-3, 4-3 ACC) will have to deal with Boston College’s tenth-ranked rushing attack on Saturday without standout linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin.

Per the Courier-Journal, Cardinals head coach Bobby Petrino announced Thursday that the senior will miss Saturday night’s road contest due to a hamstring injury. The injury originally occurred during the Cardinals’ win over N.C. State on Oct. 18, but he was able to play through it last Thursday against No. 2 Florida State.

“It’s unfortunate,” Petrino said. “He’s played real well. It’s just a situation where he needs more time.”

The 6-foot-4, 252-pound Mauldin leads Louisville with 6.5 sacks and 12 tackles for losses. In all, he has 39 total tackles.

In Mauldin’s absence, Petrino said junior Trevon Young and sophomore Nick Dawson would see increased playing time. In seven games played, Young, a 6-foot-4, 229-pound junior college transfer, has six tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack. In eight games, the 6-foot-3, 257-pound Dawson has four tackles.

Saturday night’s contest with the Eagles (6-3, 3-2 ACC) kicks off at 7:15 p.m. ET at Alumni Stadium.

Notre Dame safety Eilar Hardy cleared to play by NCAA

Three weeks after being invited back to Notre Dame’s roster, senior Eilar Hardy has been cleared to play by the NCAA. Michael Bertsch, the school’s Director of Football Media Relations, announced the news Friday morning.

University of Notre Dame senior safety Eilar Hardy has been cleared bythe NCAA to participate in competition.

— Michael Bertsch (@NDsidBertschy) November 7, 2014

Hardy, a reserve safety, was one of five Fighting Irish players who were investigated for academic fraud beginning in August. The five were held out of competition and practice during the investigation, which concluded last month. The other four – cornerback KeiVarae Russell, receiver DaVaris Daniels, defensive lineman Ishaq Williams and linebacker Kendall Moore – are not permitted to return to the team this season.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said October 16 that Hardy had some academic work to do before he could return to the practice field.

“We have some things to work on, he’s working on right now,” Kelly said. “Some of his classes and things of that nature. But I’ve invited him back on the roster to practice and then we’ll take it from there.”

Hardy started two games and played in a total of 10 games for the Fighting Irish in 2013. He recorded 26 tackles and one tackle for loss, but was not listed on the team’s two-deep depth chart during preseason camp.

What to Watch, Week 11: It's time to thin the College Football Playoff herd

What a great week for college football.

There are 12 one-loss teams remaining among the Power Five conferences and six of them play each other this weekend.

While the College Football Playoff picture probably won’t be a lot clearer after this weekend, we might be able to definitively cross some teams off the list, and by extension, count some conferences out of contention.

This is the beginning of the thinning of the herd and marks the first of four very exciting final weeks of the college football regular season as we march to the inaugural College Football Playoff.

Here’s what to watch in Week 11:

Game of the week:

No. 7 Kansas State at No. 6 TCU, 7:30 p.m. ET

Let’s go ahead and say the purple team will win this game. This is an important contest for both teams because both are in the College Football Playoff mix. This is TCU’s last big game, so it needs to make a statement to impress voters and then it needs some help from the teams above it. That shouldn’t be a problem since several of those teams play each other. Kansas State is just on the outside looking in, but it has the type of schedule that could catapult it into the playoff if it wins out. Both of these teams have been playing well all season, so this should be a close game. Expect a lot of offense in this game as both teams have steady quarterbacks and star receivers. The biggest wildcard will be whether TCU star running back B.J. Catalon, who’s practiced sparingly this week, will be good to go.

Game to watch:

No. 5 Alabama at No. 16 LSU, 8 p.m. ET

Alabama is about to enter the toughest end-of-the-season gauntlets of any team in the country, starting with this weekend’s game against LSU. Both teams have had an extra week to prepare for this game, but it’s difficult to really prepare for playing a night game in Death Valley. The Alabama offense, which has been great in its past two games, will have to be sharp and patient because LSU doesn’t give up a lot, especially in the passing game. Bama running back T.J. Yeldon has been nursing a foot injury in the past couple weeks, so that could be a concern as well. LSU is one of the top teams in the nation when it comes to pass efficiency defense and it will be locked in on Alabama star receiver Amari Cooper. This might not be the 9-6 game it was a few years ago, but it definitely won’t be last year’s Alabama domination.

Also check out…

No. 14 Ohio State at No. 8 Michigan State, 8 p.m. ET

Thanks to the struggles of the Big Ten this season, this is one of the few marquee matchups of the conference’s season. Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has lost to one Big Ten opponent during his tenure with the Buckeyes and it was Michigan State during last year’s Big Ten title game. While he insisted that this wasn’t a rivalry, it’s clear there is a lot riding on this game. Both of these teams have one loss, and since the College Football Playoff committee isn’t a big fan of the Buckeyes losing to Virginia Tech, this game would go a long way toward pushing them toward one of the coveted New Year’s bowls. Michigan State, on the other hand, still has a chance to get into the College Football Playoff, but it needs this win to stay in the hunt. This game should be a lot of fun. Instead of a tradition, stodgy defensive Big Ten game, there should be some points scored and Michigan State should have a nice advantage against a soft Ohio State secondary.

Don't waste your time with:

Any of the early games

The morning games are usually hit and miss from week-to-week, but this week’s slate is especially awful. Even the contest between ranked Oklahoma and Baylor has lost a bit of its steam considering neither of those teams are as good as many expected them to be at the beginning of the season. Do you really want to see Ole Miss take out its frustrations on a lowly Presbyterian team or SMU-Tulsa fight for the bottom of the AAC? Perhaps, if you’re really looking for something to watch, Iowa and Minnesota might be worth your time. Personally, I’d suggest using the early-game time slot for spending time with your family, discovering a hobby or enjoying the fresh air. Then come back for the better football that begins at 3:30 ET.

Keep an eye on:

Blake Sims, QB, Alabama

Sims had some interesting comments this week about watching film of the Tide’s last game at LSU, studying former Tide quarterback AJ McCarron and trying to emulate his composure in a hostile environment. Death Valley is a tough place to play and Alabama has had a slew of communication problems on special teams and offense all season. All eyes will be on Sims as his tries to navigate the Tide through this pivotal game that could extend or end their College Football Playoff hopes. Sims, who is a first-year starter, will have to show the poise of a veteran if he want to pull out this win.

Upset alert:

No. 18 UCLA (-6.5) at Washington, 7 p.m. ET

It’s been really difficult to trust UCLA this season. One week the Bruins look amazing against Arizona State and the next they’re barely sliding by teams such as Cal and Colorado. Washington is the type of team that isn't really good enough to topple the best of the conference, but is good enough to give teams trouble, especially at home. With the exception of a weird game against Eastern Washington and, of course, Oregon, the Huskies have been strong on defense and should be able to get after UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley. This game will be close, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Huskies won outright.

Cal defensive end Brennan Scarlett out for season

After not playing for more than a month, Cal defensive end Brennan Scarlett has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

According to the San Jose Mercury-News, Bears head coach Sonny Dykes said Thursday that the redshirt junior had successful surgery on his injured knee last week. Dykes originally characterized the injury as a sprain, but it actually was a partial ACL tear.

The injury occurred in Cal’s 60-59 win at Washington State on Oct. 4. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Scarlett actually returned to the game against WSU after injuring the knee, but has missed the last four games since. Dykes hopes Scarlett can return to full strength next summer.

“Hopefully, July he’ll be fully released and ready to go,” Dykes said.

Dykes said Scarlett hoped to return this season without surgery.

“We were going to try to work through it and brace him and practice him and get him stronger,” Dykes said. “After discussing it with him and his family and doctors, we came to the conclusion it was best to go ahead and have the surgery.”

Scarlett missed all of the 2013 season with a hand injury, but came back strong in 2014. In five games, Scarlett registered 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.

“He was really starting to come into his own and starting to play well, so I think it’s frustrating for him,” Dykes said. “He’ll get through it and I expect him to have a great year next year.”

Scarlett started nine games in 2012 and racked up 40 tackles, six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He played in three games and made four tackles as a true freshman in 2011.

The Bears halted a three-game losing streak over the weekend with a 45-31 win at Oregon State and improved to 5-4. The team is off this weekend before heading to Los Angeles to play USC next Thursday night.

Jimbo Fisher and Mike London both have a child with Fanconi anemia

Saturday's game between Virginia and Florida State is the first meeting between Virginia coach Mike London and Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher.

WIth Virginia coming to Tallahassee on a three-game losing streak, the game isn't as much of a marquee matchup as it looked earlier in the season. However, it's a very rare game. Both London and Fisher have children with Fanconi anemia. According to the Kidz1stFund, the chances of two coaches having kids with Fanconi is one in 990 billion.

Ethan Fisher and Ticynn London have Fanconi anemia, which affects 131,000 people every year. It's an inherited anemia that is primarily a recessive disorder. If both child's parents have a defect in the same FA gene, the child has a 25 percent chance of getting the disease. Those with FA are likely to develop cancers and nearly all of those affected need bone marrow transplants before adulthood.

According to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, the median age for those with the disease is 33 years old.

The Kidz1stFund was founded by Fisher and his wife, Candi, and it has raised $2.8 million since it was founded in 2011. A $1 million check will be presented to the foundation after the third quarter of the game.

“Sharing the sidelines and bringing awareness to Fanconi anemia with Coach London is an honor,” Jimbo Fisher said in a statement. “At the end of the day, there is nothing more important than family, and Coach and I are fighting for much more than a football victory during this game.”

Florida State will also wear helmet decals for FA during the game. Kicker Roberto Aguayo and TE Kevin Haplea are also organizing a touchdown pledge drive. Fans can donate based off how many touchdowns the Seminoles score on Saturday.

“It’s amazing to me what those kids... you think they all care about themselves, but that’s not true," Fisher said. I mean what Kevin is doing and what Roberto and all those guys. My hats off to them and the greatest thanks because it’s not just for us, it’s for all the other children who have it and giving them hope. I think these guys get the big picture a lot, and that’s what it’s about.”
