After not playing for more than a month, Cal defensive end Brennan Scarlett has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
According to the San Jose Mercury-News, Bears head coach Sonny Dykes said Thursday that the redshirt junior had successful surgery on his injured knee last week. Dykes originally characterized the injury as a sprain, but it actually was a partial ACL tear.
The injury occurred in Cal’s 60-59 win at Washington State on Oct. 4. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Scarlett actually returned to the game against WSU after injuring the knee, but has missed the last four games since. Dykes hopes Scarlett can return to full strength next summer.
“Hopefully, July he’ll be fully released and ready to go,” Dykes said.
Dykes said Scarlett hoped to return this season without surgery.
“We were going to try to work through it and brace him and practice him and get him stronger,” Dykes said. “After discussing it with him and his family and doctors, we came to the conclusion it was best to go ahead and have the surgery.”
Scarlett missed all of the 2013 season with a hand injury, but came back strong in 2014. In five games, Scarlett registered 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.
“He was really starting to come into his own and starting to play well, so I think it’s frustrating for him,” Dykes said. “He’ll get through it and I expect him to have a great year next year.”
Scarlett started nine games in 2012 and racked up 40 tackles, six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He played in three games and made four tackles as a true freshman in 2011.
The Bears halted a three-game losing streak over the weekend with a 45-31 win at Oregon State and improved to 5-4. The team is off this weekend before heading to Los Angeles to play USC next Thursday night.
