Arizona State lineman Edward 'Chip' Sarafin becomes first active player to come out as gay

In a recent interview, Arizona State offensive lineman Edward “Chip” Sarafin became the first active Division I college football player to come out as gay.

Sarafin, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound fifth-year senior from Gilbert, Ariz., decided to make his sexual orientation public in an interview with Phoenix-based Compete Magazine. The article focused on Sarafin’s biomedical engineering studies at ASU and mentions that Sarafin began to come out to his teammates last spring.(via Arizona State athletics)

“It was really personal to me, and it benefitted my peace of mind greatly,” he said.

Sarafin is following in the footsteps of former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam, who came out following a standout career with the Tigers and was drafted by the St. Louis Rams. Though Sam had come out to his teammates during his senior season, the news had not been made public. Sarafin will be the first to be an active member of a high-level college football team and be openly gay.

Sarafin is a walk-on who has mainly contributed on the scout team during his time with the program, but also “provided protection” on special teams in 2013, according to his player bio on Arizona State’s website.

Both head coach Todd Graham and vice president of university athletics Ray Anderson released statements of support for Sarafin.

"We are a brotherhood that is not defined by cultural and personal differences, but rather an individual's commitment to the Sun Devil Way," head coach Todd Graham said. "Chip is a fifth-year senior and a Scholar Baller, a graduate and a master's student. His commitment to service is unmatched and it is clear he is on his way to leading a successful life after his playing career, a goal that I have for every student-athlete. Diversity and acceptance are two of the pillars of our program, and he has full support from his teammates and the coaching staff."

Added Anderson:

"The entire athletics department is extremely proud of Chip and is unequivocally supportive of him. His undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, his pursuit of a master's in the same field, his research involving football-related concussions, and his heavy involvement in the community with both youth sports in Arizona and the Tillman Scholars embodies all the characteristics that set our student-athletes apart and allows our university to maintain an environment of inclusiveness and progression.”

Arizona State’s season opens up at home against Weber State on August 28. The Sun Devils are coming off a 10-4 record in 2013.

Arkansas introduces 'Razorback Rooftop' student club at Razorback Stadium

Sometimes athletic programs need to pull out all the stops to generate interest in a football team – especially when a team is coming off a terrible season. That’s where ideas like a “rooftop student club” come from.

Arkansas went 3-9 last year and did not win a single SEC game and on Tuesday the new “Razorback Rooftop” was announced.

Here’s how the program describes it:

The new Razorback Rooftop will provide University of Arkansas students an opportunity to sit together, socialize and mingle with friends while watching the best college football in the country. The Club will be located above the south end zone on the top deck which was used for student seating in past years.

The “club” will have a “live DJ, couches, TVs, and high-top tables,” among other amenities. For each home game, 2,000 wristbands will be made available for students who purchased an $85 “access pass.”

If it will get more students to attend the games, especially early season clunkers against Nicholls State and Northern Illinois, then it’s probably a good move for Arkansas. The rest of the team’s home slate includes games against Alabama, Georgia, UAB, LSU and Ole Miss.

Rutgers moves RB Justin Goodwin to CB after Dre Boggs is injured

Rutgers' second-leading rusher from 2013 spent Wednesday's practice as a cornerback.

Sophomore Justin Goodwin is switching over to defense after an injury to freshman CB Dre Boggs. Boggs was hurt on Tuesday. He sustained what the school termed a "lower body injury" and according to coach Kyle Flood, he's out for an undetermined amount of time.

CB Andre Boggs out with an injury. Length of time he is out still to be determined according to @KyleFloodRU

— Jason Baum (@JasonBaumRU) August 13, 2014

So Flood put Goodwin, who also played CB in high school, on the other side of the ball. The Scarlet Knights have Gareef Glashen, a fifth-year senior, at CB and a host of other players who are either freshmen or sophomores.

"At first, I was kind of surprised. But whatever they need me to do to help the team out, I'm going to do," Goodwin said via ScarletNation.com.

Goodwin was the Scarlet Knights' second-leading rusher last season, running for 521 yards and five touchdowns.

"Justin is certainly a smart football player," Flood said. "He is certainly not going to forget what he has learned on offense and with the whole offensive package being in, he can learn the little intricacies of the game plans as we need him so that he can always be there for us in an emergency role."

Could Goodwin's switch be permanent? Flood said he's going to keep Goodwin on defense through the team's scrimmage on Saturday and "go from there."

Goodwin admitted he was uncomfortable at CB, but that's natural. It was only his first day and he hasn't played corner in over a year. According to NJ.com, Flood also didn't rule out playing Goodwin at both positions last year, making him like UCLA's Myles Jack. A linebacker, Jack emerged as a weapon for the Bruins at running back late in the 2013 season.

Georgia FB Merritt Hall's career is over after multiple concussions

Georgia FB Merritt Hall won't play his junior season in 2014 after being medically disqualified because of concussions.

Hall suffered a concussion last week in practice. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it was at least Hall's third in the last two seasons.

"He was pretty upset about it," Georgia QB Hutson Mason said via UGASports.com. "You just feel bad for the kid and realize just how tough a position that is."

Mason said that Hall told him it wasn't because of the number of concussions he'd suffered but because of the way he had recovered from the latest one.

“Merritt told me he was medically DQ’d,” Mason said via the AJC. “He said it wasn’t necessarily how many concussions he’s had; it was how he responded to the last concussion, the symptoms he was having. They kind of threw up a red flag about it.”

Hall tweeted the following on Thursday morning.

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Proverbs 19:21

— Merritt Hall (@merritthall34) August 12, 2014

With Hall out, senior walk-on Taylor Maxey becomes Georgia's lead fullback and he hasn't played a college game. Hall played in all 13 games last year and started one. LB Detric Bing-Dukes recently moved to FB and Christian Payne is also a walk on at the position.

"A lot of people don't understand that relationship [between a fullback and running back]; I think the only person that understands that relationship is the running back, because he's the one that's right there in that room with you," RB Todd Gurley said. "We've got other guys like Detric (Bing-Dukes) and (Christian) Payne and they've been learning a whole lot these last few days. I feel they will be pretty good in the future."

Another day, another new uniform.

On Wednesday, it was UAB that revealed a brand new look for the 2014 season. The Blazers, in year one under Bill Clark, will wear the combination in its season opening game against Troy at home on August 30.

As is customary these days, a few lucky players got to model the new look and walk in to a team meeting room to show them off. In this case, the team’s reaction was awesome.

Notre Dame names Everett Golson starting quarterback

In an announcement that was not much of a surprise, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said Wednesday that Everett Golson will be the Irish’s starting quarterback when the season opens up against Rice on August 30.

Golson, a redshirt junior who led the Irish to a national championship game appearance in 2012, edged out redshirt freshman Malik Zaire. Kelly, who made it clear that he will not employ a two-quarterback system, said he reached a decision Tuesday night.

“Everett is the starter for Rice and we hope he’s the starter for the entire year,” Kelly said, via IrishIllustrated.com. “We’re all in this in a merit-based kind of situation. We’ve gotta win. Everett knows that.”

After throwing for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012, Golson did not play in 2013 after he was suspended from the university due to an academic violation. Golson admitted that he cheated on a test, but long maintained that he would return to Notre Dame once his suspension ended. He did just that in December.

When Golson was brought back to the team, Kelly said that Golson would have to compete with Zaire to regain the starting role and Zaire was confident that he could supplant Golson as the team’s No. 1 quarterback. Ultimately, however, Golson ended up being the better option.

Predictably, Zaire wasn’t pleased, but Kelly was happy with his reaction.

#NotreDame HC Brian Kelly: “I got the right answer from Malik. He wasn’t happy. If he gave me a hug, I’d be very disappointed.”

— Irish Illustrated (@NDatRivals) August 13, 2014

Golson said the competition was close and had nothing but praise for Zaire.

“It was very, very tight I would say and it was a close competition,” Golson on QB battle

— Irish Illustrated (@NDatRivals) August 13, 2014

“Malik is a tremendous quarterback. I think when he does get on the field, he’s gonna shine.” Golson on Zaire

— Irish Illustrated (@NDatRivals) August 13, 2014

In his time away from South Bend, the 6-foot, 200-pound Golson spent time working on his game with quarterback coach George Whitfield Jr. in San Diego.

Eric LeGrand and Adam Taliaferro to serve as honorary captains in Rutgers-Penn State game

There will be a special moment before Rutgers makes its Big Ten debut against Penn State at home on September 13.

Both schools announced Tuesday that Rutgers’ Eric LeGrand and Penn State’s Adam Taliaferro will serve as honorary captains for their respective university when the teams meet for the first time since 1995. Both LeGrand and Taliaferro suffered serious spinal cord injuries during their playing careers and will join one another on the field for the pregame coin toss.

Taliaferro’s injury occurred when he made a tackle as a freshman against Ohio State on September 23, 2000. He ruptured his 5th vertebrae and bruised his spinal cord and doctors gave him a five percent chance of ever walking. He has since miraculously made a full recovery and works as an attorney serves on Penn State’s Board of Trustees.

LeGrand was paralyzed from the neck down after fracturing his C-3 and C-4 cervical vertebrae while making a tackle on a kickoff against Army on October 16, 2010. LeGrand’s perseverance and work as a motivational speaker has made him an inspirational figure. Both LeGrand and Taliaferro are natives of New Jersey and have started foundations to help others dealing with paralysis.

“It’s going to be pretty cool,” LeGrand said. “Adam is a role model for me. From meeting him for the first time, seeing him on his feet again when doctors told him he’d never be on his feet, he has really pushed me during my recovery. He’s still a big inspiration to me.”

Taliaferro called the chance to serve as honorary captain with LeGrand an “honor.”

“For me, it’s an absolute honor to share this with Eric. Eric has inspired me ever since his injury and continues to do so each and every day,” Taliaferro said.

The two share a bond that goes back to a few days following the date of LeGrand’s injury.

“What makes this so special for me is that Adam was in touch with me from the very beginning,” said LeGrand. “I remember when I was first transferred to Kessler Institute; he came to see me the first month and a half. He has been supporting me and encouraging me from the start.”

Added Taliaferro: “I remember seeing Eric a couple of days after his injury, and I remember the first thing he told me is `I’m going to be just like you. I’m going to walk out of this.’ For him to still have that same tenacity to this day, as I said, Eric continues to inspire me. I believe in my heart he will get up and walk someday.”

LeGrand, who had his No. 52 retired by the schook, graduated from Rutgers in May and spoke to his fellow graduates at the school’s commencement ceremony. Taliaferro graduated from Penn State in 2005 and went on to earn his law degree from Rutgers School of Law-Camden in 2008.

To give the team an extra boost for the Friday night matchup, the Bulls will wear an all-black uniform combination for the first time and the program is asking fans to participate in a stadium-wide “blackout.”

The school unveiled the new look, including the brand new helmets, in a video on Tuesday.

UCLA WR Devin Lucien released from hospital following head injury

There was a scary moment at UCLA practice Tuesday night when wide receiver Devin Lucien went down with a head injury.

The redshirt junior was briefly hospitalized after he went up for a diving catch and “came down on his head.” Per the OC Register, Lucien was able to walk off the field and over to the training tent area, where he was treated by team doctors.

Lucien was later put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital in an ambulance, but was released from the hospital later Tuesday night. According to the Los Angeles Times, the receiver is expected to attend practice Wednesday, though the team did not say if he would participate.

“I think anytime something like that happens and you see an ambulance come on to the field of play, it’s tough,” said head coach Jim Mora. “As always, we’re going to be overly cautious with anything that has to do with the head, neck or spine. That’s not a tough decision.”

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Lucien started three games and caught 19 passes for 339 yards in 2013. He is expected to assume a full-time starting role for the Bruins in the upcoming season.

Lucien, a native of Encino, California, was a four-star recruit in UCLA's 2011 class.

New Mexico's Crusoe Gongbay and SaQwan Edwards reinsted after rape charges dropped

More than a month after rape charges against New Mexico players Crusoe Gongbay and SaQwan Edwards were dropped, the two players were allowed to rejoin the team.

The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office dismissed the charges against both players in June, but said there was a possibility they could be refilled. The DA’s office told athletic director Paul Krebs that the charges had been summarily dismissed against the two players and Ryan Ruff, a former New Mexico student but not a football player.

Krebs and coach Bob Davie decided to let the two players rejoin the team.

In April, a female New Mexico student accused the three men of raping her at gunpoint in the back of a blue BMW. Gongbay and Ruff were arrested on April 21 and Edwards was arrested nine days later.

George Anthony Bleus, an attorney representing Ruff, provided videos that he said proved no rape had occurred.

Gongbay, a senior, was the team’s third-leading rusher with 97 carries for 592 yards. Edwards, a senior, started at cornerback last season and finished with 42 tackles, an interception and recovered a team-high three fumbles.

Boise State shows off an alternate orange helmet (Photo)

Kansas unveils 'Crimson Chrome' uniforms (Video)

Kansas is going chrome in 2014.

The school teased "Crimson Chrome" uniforms the team will wear at some point this fall. The uniforms are all-red and feature a chrome helmet with an oversized Jayhawk logo.

While chrome helmets are quickly becoming an overused trend, it's not one of the two weird things about the uniform. First, the jerseys would look a lot better without the Jayhawk logo on the shoulderpads. It looks awkward and out of place, don't you think? Numbers or even nothing at all would be a better choice. Second, the Jayhawk isn't exactly the best logo for an oversized helmet logo, right?
