Bret Bielema earns first SEC win Arkansas' 17-0 shutout of LSU

Arkansas cooach Bret Bielema, left, has a word with an official during the first half against LSU in an NCAA college football game in Fayetteville, Ark., Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014. (AP Photo/David Quinn) It took 14 tries, but Arkansas coach Bret Bielema finally has an SEC win.

The Razorbacks have made significant strides in Bielema’s second year with the program, and their improved play was on display in an impressive 17-0 victory over No. 17 LSU at home Saturday night. The win marked Arkansas’ first shutout since Sept. 6, 2006.

That elusive conference victory has been in the Hogs’ grasps many times this season. Three of the team’s five losses were by just one possession against Top 10 teams, and the Hogs finally got over the hump Saturday night in the Battle for the Golden Boot.

The Arkansas defense wreaked havoc for Anthony Jennings and the LSU offense all night. In all, the Tigers could muster only 123 yards of total offense. Jennings was limited to 12-of-22 passing and only 87 yards while the Tigers bevy of running backs was shut down for 36 yards on 32 carries.

The Arkansas offense wasn’t flashy, but it did just enough to get the job done.

A 32-yard Adam McFain field goal accounted for the only points of the first quarter for the Hogs. A quarter later, a methodical 15-play, 60-yard drive allowed Arkansas to open up a 10-0 lead. That drive culminated third-and-goal one-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Williams (18 carries, 55 yards, TD).

LSU had a chance to get on the board, but Colby Delahoussaye missed a 27-yard chip shot midway through the second quarter.

The defensive struggle continued in the second half as Delahoussaye missed another field goal for the Tigers, this time from 47 yards. Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen (16-of-27, 169 yards) then led the game-clinching touchdown drive for the Hogs in the fourth, which ended on a 5-yard Alex Collins (16 carries, 46 yards, TD) touchdown run with 11:03 to go.

The win is big for Arkansas (5-5) on its quest for bowl eligibility. With two games left on the schedule at home against Ole Miss and at SEC East leading Missouri, Bielema’s squad will have to pull off another upset to reach postseason play.

LSU drops to 7-4 with the loss, its second straight. This is only the second time a Les Miles-coached LSU team has lost back-to-back games. The Tigers will look to get on track in its final game of the season – a Thursday night showdown at Texas A&M.

Florida State runs down Miami 30-26

Nov 15, 2014; Miami Gardens, FL, USA; Miami Hurricanes quarterback Brad Kaaya (15) throws a pass against the Florida State Seminoles during the first quarter at Sun Life Stadium. (Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports)

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - You keep sticking your head into the lion's mouth, one day the lion's going to decide it likes the taste. For Florida State, today was not that day.

For the fifth time this season, Florida State made what should have been an easy steamroll into an adventure. And for the fifth time, the Seminoles escaped, this time with a 30-26 victory over hated rival Miami.

The Seminoles needed overtime to beat Clemson, trailed both NC State and Louisville by more than two touchdowns, and were one fortuitous penalty away from losing to Notre Dame. This game, Florida State needed 56 minutes and 55 seconds to take the lead. While other teams' fans would have passed out from holding their breath, Seminole Nation knew better.

And those thoughts were officially verified with Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya's interception with 39 seconds left.

From an aesthetic perspective, this was another night to forget for Florida State, but then that could describe much of this winning-ugly season. The shadows of scandals both confirmed and alleged loom large over the program, and it’ll be a long time before the Seminoles shake the body blows the program’s reputation sustained this year.

But when you want to cover up a dark stain, you use an even darker paint, and burgundy does that job quite nicely. Florida State always seems to need a half to wake up, shake off the snooze button, and remember it’s actually playing a game.

Jameis Winston showed once again why he’s a nightmare for both supporters and detractors. He made costly mistakes, dropping two snaps and slinging an ill-advised interception to end the first half. But he also picked at the Hurricane defense like he was sampling a Vegas buffet, finding receivers Travis Rudolph and Nick O’Leary in the midst of the Hurricane secondary virtually whenever the occasion demanded. Florida State’s rushing game was nonexistent; remove Delvin Cook’s two long touchdown runs, and the Seminoles barely ran far enough to cross a kitchen.

For Miami, which hasn't beaten Florida State at home in a decade, the frustrations ran deep, as did the missed opportunities. Freshman Kaaya had the poise necessary to post a 23-7 lead on the defending national champions, but nonetheless floated two guaranteed-touchdown passes over the heads of his receivers. Running back Duke Johnson became the first Hurricane to total 5,000 all-purpose yards in a career, but couldn't get separation at the game's most crucial moments.

Florida State advances and moves on, and even an ugly victory is better than a loss. Miami, meanwhile, must wait another two years for an opportunity to defeat their northwest rival.

Texas gets bowl eligible with win over Oklahoma State

Texas is going bowling.

The Longhorns got win No. 6 Saturday night against Oklahoma State, dominating the Cowboys 28-7 in Stillwater.

Texas' defense made the night easy for the offense, but it was combined with quarterback Tyrone Swoopes' most impressive performance as a starter. Swoopes topped 300 yards passing and was efficient in doing so. He finished 24-33 for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

The Texas defense held Oklahoma State without a third-down conversion until the Cowboys' touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter. Heck, before OSU scored to make it 22-7, the Cowboys had three first downs the entire game. Texas didn't need Swoopes to step up.

But he ended up having what may be his best day in a Texas uniform. Swoopes posted his highest completion percentage of the season and while he topped 300 yards passing, it was the first time he'd done so without throwing an interception.

It also came after one of the worst games of his season. Last week against West Virginia, Swoopes was 11-29 for 124 yards passing.

Entering the season, one of the themes surrounding Texas' season and Charlie Strong's first year was culture change. After losing to Kansas State on October 25, the Longhorns' third loss in four games, Texas was 3-5. It was a perfect time to see if the Longhorns would keep fighting for a bowl or simply wilt.

And since then, the Longhorns have won three straight games over Texas Tech, West Virginia and Oklahoma State. And while all three haven't been exceptionally pretty, they've been convincing.

Yes, a matchup against TCU on Thanksgiving looms to possibly push Texas back to .500. But even if Texas loses to the Horned Frogs, the optimism from the three weeks should carry over to 2015.

Northwestern shocks Notre Dame 43-40 in overtime

Northwestern kicker Jack Mitchell (8) celebrates with quarterback Christian Salem (18) after a field goal against Notre Dame in overtime of an NCAA college football game in South Bend, Ind., Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014. Northwestern won 43-40. (AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh) Northwestern kicker Jack Mitchell had not made a kick longer than 29 yards all season – until Saturday.

The sophomore who doubles as a Wildcats baseball player hit field goals of 31, 46, 45 and 41 yards, including the game-winner in overtime, to give the Wildcats a 43-40 comeback win over Notre Dame in South Bend.

The Fighting Irish led the entire game until Mitchell tied things up at 40 with a 45-yarder with 19 seconds left in regulation. Up 40-37, the Fighting Irish had a chance to run out the clock, but the normally reliable Cam McDaniel fumbled the ball, allowing the Wildcats to take over at their own 28-yard line with 1:28 to go.

Senior quarterback Trevor Siemian (30-of-48, 284 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) quickly led Northwestern down the field, completing five consecutive passes to open the possession. After reaching the Notre Dame 28-yard line, the drive stalled, but Mitchell came through and sent the game to overtime.

The Fighting Irish started the extra frame on offense, but couldn’t gain a single yard. Kicker Kyle Brindza, who had already missed from 38 yards, missed again – this time from 42 yards.

The Wildcats kept it conservative when they took over, running the ball three times for a total of one yard. Mitchell then trotted out again with a chance to win the game and calmly booted the game-winner, completing the comeback.

Notre Dame seemed to be in control for most of the game, but the Wildcats kept clinging on. The Fighting Irish led by as much as 11 at two different junctures of the game, including with 10:34 left in the fourth quarter when Everett Golson (21-of-40, 287 yards; 78 yards rushing) hit William Fuller for an 11-yard score. After that score, Golson’s fourth (3 passing, 1 rushing) of the day, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly opted to go for two and failed. Instead of taking a 12-point lead, the lead was 11 points, 40-29.

That point would end up haunting Kelly as a Siemian TD run and two-point conversion cut Notre Dame’s lead to three with 4:10 to go. From then came McDaniel’s fumble, Mitchell’s two clutch kicks and Northwestern win.

The loss could potentially drop the Fighting Irish, who were ranked No. 18, out of the College Football Playoff rankings.

For Northwestern, the win halted a four-game losing streak. Now 4-6, the Wildcats have a chance to reach bowl eligibility with wins over Purdue and Illinois in their last two games of the season.

Alabama beats Mississippi State 25-20

There will be a new No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday.

No. 5 Alabama beat No. 1 Mississippi State 25-20 on Saturday in Tuscaloosa in a win that undoubtedly moves the Crimson Tide into the College Football Playoff top four and into first place in the SEC West.

Two years ago in Tuscaloosa, then-Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel put himself in position for the Heisman Trophy when the Aggies upset the Crimson Tide. On Saturday, Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott likely lost the Heisman Trophy as he threw three interceptions, including one with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs drove down the field to attempt to close the deficit to a single possession.

Mississippi State pulled within 19-13 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Alabama responded with a clock-chewing counterpunch. The Tide drove 76 yards in 15 plays in over six minutes, the final play being a seven-yard touchdown run by T.J. Yeldon.

Until that point, Alabama's offense had been stagnant in the second half, accumulating 39 yards on 14 plays in its first three second half drives. But with the aid of two crucial third-down scrambles that turned into first downs by quarterback Blake Sims, 65 of Alabama's yards on the touchdown drive were on the ground.

Before the drive, Alabama had 62 yards rushing.

Prescott's second interception was also incredibly costly. Mississippi State bookended halftime with field goals and drove to the Alabama 15 on its third drive of the second half. On second down, Prescott saw that he had single coverage but threw the ball woefully behind his receiver, giving Cyrus Jones an easy pick in the end zone.

While one of Alabama, Florida State or Oregon will likely be No. 1 in Tuesday's playoff rankings, the big question for the committee becomes how far Mississippi State will fall. No. 4 TCU won, but it was comeback 34-30 win over Big 12 doormat Kansas. Will TCU keep its spot in the top four? Or does it drop to five and Mississippi State stays in the top four?

The next rankings aren't the end-all, anyway. Mississippi State still has a game against Ole Miss while TCU plays Texas and Iowa State. At 11-1 with victories over Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M, MSU's end-of-season resumé would be very strong, even if it wouldn't make the SEC Championship Game.

The committee's job determining the four best teams in college football just got even tougher.

TCU rallies to turn back Jayhawks' upset bid

No. 5 TCU turns back Jayhawks' upset bid 34-30

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Aaron Green ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns, Cameron Echols-Luper returned a punt 69 yards for another score and No. 5 TCU turned back a spirited upset bid from Kansas in a 34-30 win Saturday that kept the Horned Frogs in playoff contention. From College Football News : CBSSports.com - No. 5 TCU turns back Jayhawks' upset bid 34-30

TCU's 34-30 escape against Kansas could cost its top 4 spot

TCU coach Gary Patterson knew there was potential for a letdown this week against Kansas; he’d been through something similar before.

His Horned Frogs, coming of a big win against Kansas State that vaulted them into the top 4 of the College Football Playoff standings, escaped Lawrence with a 34-30 win, but just getting a win won’t do them any favors when it comes to a College Football Playoff rankings committee that’s looking for style points against weaker competition.

Kansas led by as many as 10 at two different points in the game before TCU rallied in the second half and pulled out the victory. But the game was full of mistakes and turnovers, including a key fumble midway through the fourth quarter that put Kansas on the TCU 10-yard line down a touchdown. The TCU defense held and forced a field goal that resulted in the final score.

TCU came into the game a four-touchdown favorite. Kansas has just one Big 12 win this year and had been unceremoniously beaten by almost every other foe it faced. But TCU was lackadaisical. It strolled into Lawrence like a team that thought it could just show up and win, and now it might lose its top 4 ranking because of it.

Patterson actually used a similar situation as a bit of a cautionary tale during his press conference earlier in the week.

During the 2010 season, TCU defeated No. 5 Utah by 40 points and turned around and nearly lost to San Diego State the following weekend. At the time, it was competing with Boise State for the coveted nonautomatic qualifying spot in the BCS. The close win dropped the Horned Frogs behind the Broncos for a BCS bowl berth.

There are a lot of one-loss teams behind TCU just itching for one of those top 4 spots and TCU might have just opened the door to give its away. Alabama, which was No. 5 in last week’s rankings, had its way with No. 1 Mississippi State, so it will definitely move into the top 4. No. 2 Oregon was idle and No. 3 Florida State plays Miami later in the evening.

Meanwhile, TCU’s newly-named nemesis, Baylor, also was idle, but TCU’s struggle might be enough to vault the Bears or might be enough to keep Mississippi State hanging around.

Bottom line is that TCU got the win. It remains one of a handful of one-loss teams in the College Football Playoff rankings and it still has an impressive body of work even if Saturday’s victory was a less-than-impressive win.

We’ll all just have to wait and see if Patterson’s cautionary tale plays out once again.

Oh, and a side note to that, Boise State went on to lose the Nevada, and TCU earned a spot in the Rose Bowl where it beat Wisconsin to cap an undefeated season.

Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon sets single-game FBS rushing record

Nebraska had no answer for Melvin Gordon.

Through three quarters, Wisconsin’s standout junior running back broke the NCAA FBS single-game rushing record, racking up 408 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.

Gordon reached the end zone on runs of 62, 1, 6 and 26 yards on the afternoon, helping the Badgers storm back from an early deficit to take a 52-17 lead. He also gashed the porous Nebraska defense for runs of 42, 39, 44, 43 and 68 yards on the record-setting afternoon.

The previous record was 406 yards by TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson, who set the mark against UTEP on Nov. 20, 1999.

That kid @Melvingordon25 bad!! Congrats on breaking the NCAA single game rushing record. #respect

— LaDainian Tomlinson (@LT_21) November 15, 2014

Gordon’s historic performance will undoubtedly vault him into consideration for the Heisman Trophy. He may now even be considered the favorite.

He led the country with 1,501 yards rushing and 19 scores coming into the game. With two games left for the Badgers against Iowa and Minnesota, it looks like Gordon will be hard to catch for this year’s rushing title.

While Gordon has been the unquestioned star of the day, the Wisconsin defense has forced four Nebraska turnovers and held the Huskers to just 172 total yards.

The Badgers, ranked No. 20 in the country, look primed to take over the top spot in the Big Ten’s West Division. If the Badgers take care of business against the Hawkeyes and Gophers in the coming weeks, Wisconsin will head back to the Big Ten Championship Game.

Kansas WR Nigel King makes what could be the TD catch of the year (Video)

Kansas has done all it can to try to pull off the upset against TCU, including a spectacular touchdown catch by receiver Nigel King.

King was on the right sideline when a pass from quarterback Michael Cummings was tipped out of his hands. However, King alertly stayed with the play, tipped the ball a couple times to himself, hauled it in, tiptoed the sideline, and outraced the defense for the 78-yard score.

It was definitely one of the best catches we’ve seen all season.

At the time, the score gave the Jayhawks a 27-17 lead with 8:27 remaining in the third quarter. But the good feelings were short-lived.

TCU scored two consecutive touchdowns, including a punt return for a score, to take a 31-27 lead late in the third.

Gators' late collapse another blow for Muschamp

Georgia Tech's win, Duke's loss means the ACC Coastal will come down to the wire

The ACC Coastal Division got a lot more complicated on Saturday after Georgia Tech defeated Clemson and Duke lost to Virginia Tech — two unexpected outcomes.

The win put Georgia Tech in the temporary driver’s seat to win the Coastal, but it’s done with its conference schedule. The loss doesn’t push Duke out of the running, but it does mean the Blue Devils must win both of their final games. If they do that, both Georgia Tech and Duke will be 6-2 in the conference and Duke will hold the tiebreaker with the head-to-head win.

Oh, did we mention Miami?

Yes, there’s still a chance — albeit a slim chance — the Hurricanes could claim the Coastal title if they win their final three games. That means, however, the Hurricanes would have to defeat Florida State on Saturday night.

Then there would be three teams tied for the Coastal title and they would all have a victory against each other. So the tiebreaker would come down to Coastal Division winning percentage and that won’t be determined until all the conference games have been played.

Whew!

Did you follow all that?

The only thing we know for sure in the ACC is that Florida State clinched the Atlantic Division title thanks to Clemson’s loss. Now that’s a good thing and a bad thing for the Seminoles. It’s a good thing because that means FSU will play for another ACC championship. It’s a bad thing because Clemson’s 28-6 loss to Georgia Tech was so brutal that it will probably knock the Tigers out of the top 25, thus taking away a top-25 win from the Seminoles, a much-needed brownie point when discussing the College Football Playoff race.

Clemson lost more than just the game, too. It lost its star quarterback Deshaun Watson to a knee injury. Backup Cole Stoudt threw three completions and three interceptions, including two pick-sixes. And third-stringer Nick Schuessler completed all four of his pass, but it was for a measly 19 yards.

Georgia Tech, meanwhile, was as impressive on defense as it has been all season and would definitely cause a little bit of intrigue if it was to meet Florida State for the ACC title.

As for Duke, well its 17-16 loss was all the Blue Devils’ doing. It had three turnovers and all of Virginia Tech’s points came off those errors. Duke had come into the game with just six turnovers all season. Virginia Tech hadn’t forced a takeway since Oct. 16.

Duke will have to regroup if it wants to win its second consecutive Coastal title. Its remaining games are against North Carolina and Wake Forest, so certainly winnable if the Blue Devils don’t shoot themselves in the foot again.

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in December 2012 and running back Karlos Williams was part of a domestic battery investigation this season. However, Winston was not charged because of a lack of evidence in the case and the alleged victim in the investigation involving Williams wanted the case dropped.

Winston faces a Title IX hearing on December 1 for the incident and Williams could be subject to a Title IX investigation as well.

The Hurricanes and Seminoles kick off at 8 p.m. ET. Florida State enters the game with a 25-game winning streak.

J.T. Barrett sets OSU TD record in win over Minnesota

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett set both single-game and single-season records in the Buckeyes' 31-21 win over Minnesota on Saturday.

Barrett was 15-25 passing for 198 yards, three touchdowns and an interception and ran for 189 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. The four total touchdowns pushed Barrett's season total to 38, which is a single-season Ohio State record.

Barrett's rushing yards were the most any Ohio State quarterback has amassed in a single game. It was a total boosted by his second carry of the game, which was an 86-yard touchdown run. Oh, that's the longest run for an Ohio State quarterback too.

He broke Braxton Miller's total touchdown record of 36 with his second touchdown pass of the game, which was a 30-yard pass to Michael Thomas on an incredible blown coverage by Minnesota. The safety to Thomas' side bit on the underneath route despite the presence of two other Gophers' defenders in the area and left Thomas all by himself near the end zone for the easy touchdown.

As you likely know, Miller was slated to be Ohio State's starting QB this year but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in August. And as Barrett has stepped in he's broken the record Miller set just a year ago with at least three games to go in the season. Plus, he's making a great case for an invitation to the Heisman Trophy ceremony as a quarterback competition for Ohio State in 2015 looks more and more likely.

Despite Barrett's success, Minnesota had a chance late thanks to three OSU turnovers, including two fumbled kicks. The Gophers were in position to tie the game if they recovered an onside kick with just over a minute remaining, but the kick went straight ahead and into the arms of an Ohio State player to end any chances of an upset.

Does the win do much for Ohio State's College Football Playoff chances too? The Buckeyes now have a common-opponent victory to share with TCU, who is ahead in the rankings. However, the Horned Frogs beat Minnesota 30-7 at home. A seven-point road win probably isn't going to be a big boost, if anything. Ohio State still needs some help. But if Barrett keeps playing like he is, Ohio State's playoff argument keeps getting better and better.

Two Florida linemen blocked each other (GIF)

A play where two Florida linemen blocked each other in a loss to Georgia Southern seemed to encapsulate Florida’s disastrous 2013 season. It happened again on Saturday.

During the first half of a home game against South Carolina, linemen Max Garcia and Trip Thurman briefly blocked one another as quarterback Treon Harris dropped back to pass and then scrambled forward for a four-yard gain.

Sure it wasn’t quite as bad as last season’s blunder, but it brought back bad memories that Florida fans would love to forget.

The 5-3 Gators can clinch bowl eligibility with a win over the Gamecocks. The two teams are tied 10-10 early in the second half.

Georgia Tech RB Broderick Snoddy suffers an apparent broken leg (Graphic Video)

Georgia Tech running back Broderick Snoddy suffered what appeared to be a broken leg during the first half of the Yellow Jackets’ game against Clemson.

** WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO **

Georgia Tech RB Broderick Snoddy suffers a broken leg.

Snoddy suffered the injury after taking the option pitch from quarterback Justin Thomas moving to his left. Snoddy started to accelerate downfield when a Clemson defender grabbed him. Snoddy’s left leg kicked his right leg causing it to bend in half.

Georgia Tech medical personel immediately came out with a stretcher and Snoddy’s teammates surrounded him as he was carted off the field.

Snoddy’s injury was the second major incident of the half. Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered what looked like a knee injury earlier in the game. Both injuries were a result of players getting tripped up by the turf.

Nebraska fan cited after trying (and failing) to jump over moving cab

Saturday afternoon’s game between Nebraska and Wisconsin may decide the Big Ten’s west division, so fans are pretty fired up. One Nebraska fan, who traveled all the way to Madison, was a little too fired up Friday night.

According to the Wisconsin State-Journal, Bryce Consbruck, a 22-year-old Nebraska fan, was cited for “Sudden Pedestrian Movement” early Saturday morning after “attempting to jump over a moving taxi” shortly after 2 a.m.

Consbruck’s attempted acrobatics did not go well. He missed and sustained facial injuries. Consbruck, who was described as intoxicated, was taken to a local hospital.

The wackiness doesn’t end there. After being cited, officers said Consbruck went on an “expletive laden statement” where he “expressed his desire for the Cornhuskers to defeat the Badgers.”

He also promised to officers that he would “never try and jump over a moving car again.” That’s probably a wise idea, Bryce.

Clemson QB Deshaun Watson suffers knee injury (Video)

Clemson star quarterback Deshaun Watson left Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech with an apparent knee injury following a quarterback draw.

Clemson QB Deshaun Watson suffers knee injury.

Watson, who was in the midst of his seventh carry, appeared to step awkwardly before falling to the turf and clutching his left knee. He was able to get up and off the field under his own power, but, according to ESPN sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards, the Clemson medical staff did a knee stability test and then told Watson something that made him visibly upset. He was immediately escorted to the locker room.

Senior Cole Stoudt replaced Watson and threw a pick-six two plays later.

Clemson QB Cole Stoudt throws an interception.

Watson was in his first game back since suffering a broken hand against Louisville in early October and there was a positive feeling that Watson could keep Clemson in the hunt for a top-tier bowl. During his brief time in the game, Watson had either run or pass the ball on 14 of the Tigers’ 18 plays. He left the game completing 5-of-7 passes for 27 yards and had 40 rushing yards.

Following the Stoudt pick and the news that his knee injury might be severe, Watson gave a look that was representative of the feelings of many Clemson fans.
