Arizona beats Cal on Hail Mary touchdown (GIF)

Long after most of us had gone to bed, the Pac-12 made a lot of us wish we’d stayed up for a little Pacific Time zone football.

While the Oregon-Washington State game was decided by a touchdown (Oregon escaped 38-31), it was the Arizona-Cal finish the stole the evening show.

With no time remaining and Arizona trailing Cal 45-43, Wildcats quarterback Anu Solomon heaved the ball 47 yards to the end zone and into the waiting hands of Austin Hill, who was triple covered. Apparently, none of the Cal defenders thought it might be a good idea to try to knock the ball down.

The touchdown marked the first time Arizona led in the game and capped a 36-point fourth quarter. The Wildcats trailed 28-6 at the half, but outscored the Bears 43-17 in the second half.

Guess this will teach us all to stay up for those late games.

Louisiana-Lafayette turns botched field goal into 14-yard gain (GIF)

Whenever a holder on a field goal or extra point attempt fumbles the snap, the play usually instantly turns into a big panic for the kicking team, and more often than not, that panic does not yield a positive result.

Louisiana-Lafayette managed to defy those odds Saturday night against Boise State.

On fourth-and-14, Hunter Stover was lined up for a 38-yarder when the snap was fumbled. Stover scooped up the bouncing ball, rolled right and heaved the ball down field. Remarkably, after Stover absorbed a big hit, the pass found tight end Evan Tatford, who made a falling catch for a 14-yard gain and a first down.

The first down set up a first-and-goal for the Ragin’ Cajuns at the Boise 7-yard line. Unfortunately, the team could not turn the remarkable play into six points.

Three plays later, Stover was back out on the field for another field goal attempt. Things went smoothly this time, and the senior nailed the 22-yard attempt.

Mississippi State racks up 570 yards of offense in road upset of No. 8 LSU

For much of the offseason, we heard that Mississippi State would be a surprise contender in the SEC West in 2014. On Saturday night, the Bulldogs proved why.

Dan Mullen’s squad went into Death Valley and overwhelmed No. 8 LSU from the opening kickoff in a 34-29 win that was much more lopsided than the final score indicates (LSU scored twice in 28 seconds late in the fourth quarter). The Bulldogs racked up a whopping 570 yards of total offense – and they made it look easy en route to the first MSU win in Baton Rouge since 1991.

The Bulldogs’ offense came out firing early and often, leaving the vaunted LSU defense looking confused. Junior quarterback Dak Prescott was on point for four quarters as he threw for 268 and two touchdowns while also racking up 105 yards and another score on the ground. In addition to Prescott, the Tigers had no answer for the running prowess of Josh Robinson. The 5-foot-9, 215-pound junior running back registered 197 yards on just 16 carries.

The MSU defense never allowed the Tigers’ ground game to get going. Though the Tigers put up 430 yards of total offense, only 89 of those yards came via the run on 35 attempts – a 2.5-yard average.

LSU split snaps between Brandon Harris (6-of-9, 140 yards, two TDs, one INT) and Anthony Jennings (13-of-26, 157 yards) at quarterback, and both were subjected to some hard hits from the MSU front seven, especially when they tried to run. The two combined for just 25 yards on 13 carries.

With a strong start, the Bulldogs had the luxury of playing with a lead for most of the night. It was 17-0 early in the second quarter. When the second half rolled around, the Bulldogs pulled away for good early in the fourth quarter when it was 34-10.

LSU cut the lead to 34-16 when Kenny Hilliard scored on a one-yard run with 14:49 to go – and that looked like the closest the Tigers would get. However, Harris found freshman wideout Malchi Dupre on a 31-yard TD pass with 1:48 to, cutting the score to 34-22.

After a failed LSU onside kick, the Bulldogs had a major gaffe when the center snapped the ball over Prescott’s head as the offense tried to run the clock out. LSU recovered and Harris found Dupre in the end zone again two plays later for the Tigers’ second score in 24 seconds.

All of a sudden it was 34-29. The Tigers’ had a final crack at pulling out a miraculous win, but Harris’ Hail Mary pass was intercepted by Will Redmond as time expired, and the Bulldogs were finally able to exhale.

So what does it all mean? For one, Mississippi State is definitely a threat in the SEC West. The Bulldogs will find themselves ranked next week, but things won’t get easier. Next on the schedule? A home contest with sixth-ranked Texas A&M.

On the other side, LSU showed that it is still undergoing the typical growing pains of a very young team. Though the final score indicates otherwise, the Tigers really looked helpless at times and were thoroughly outperformed in front of a huge home crowd at Tiger Stadium.

Les Miles’ bunch will bounce back. His teams always do, but one can’t help but wonder if we overrated the Tigers a bit. New Mexico State, the team’s last non-conference game of the season, is next on the schedule for the Tigers before they enter the rigors of the SEC schedule.

The jury is still out on the Tigers – but I suspect we’ll learn a lot more after they face Auburn in two weeks.

Oklahoma's Samaje Perine runs for 242 yards and four TDs in win over West Virginia

Oklahoma RB Samaje Perine did an OK job assuming lead back duties in Keith Ford's absence.

Who are we kidding? It was more than OK. In Oklahoma's 45-27 win at West Virginia Saturday night, Perine became the first Oklahoma freshman RB to run for over 200 yards since Adrian Peterson did it in 2004.

Perine finished the night with 34 carries for 242 yards and four scores.

Ford, Oklahoma's leading rusher through the first three weeks of the season, was hurt during the Sooners' week three win over Tennessee. In his place stepped Perine, who had nearly the same amount of carries (32) as Ford did (34) in Oklahoma's three blowout wins.

With the game tied 24-24 at halftime, Perine became the focus of the Oklahoma offense in the second half. Three of his four TDs came in the final minutes and his night was capped off with a 19-yard score that extended Oklahoma's lead to 45-27 and the game out of reach for West Virginia.

Perine wasn't even the most highly touted running back in Oklahoma's class, either. A 5-11, 243 pound bowling ball out of Pflugerville, Tex., he was a four-star recruit and the No. 13 RB in the class of 2014 according to Rivals. But he was overshadowed by Joe Mixon, the top RB in the country and No. 8 prospect overall.

However, Mixon was suspended for the season after punching a female student in a restaurant over the summer. That meant Perine assumed the top backup role behind Ford, and he clearly proved he's capable of being a feature back. West Virginia defenders almost comically bounced off him at times as he thundered upfield.

While his emergence is a safety net for Ford if he misses a few more games, it's also one for Oklahoma QB Trevor Knight. The breakout performer in the Sugar Bowl against Alabama has been inconsistent throughout his career and Saturday night wasn't a performance to remember.

Sure, Knight got his first career reception, a four-yard TD catch where he was wide open on a reverse pass, but he was 16-29 for 205 yards and an interception throwing the ball. As Oklahoma put the game out of reach, the offense was Perine, Perine and more Perine.

The win was also Bob Stoops 100th in the Big 12. He's the first coach to reach triple digits.

Michigan offense fails to reach red zone in lifeless 26-10 home loss to Utah

Things have gotten ugly in Ann Arbor.

In a 26-10 home loss to Utah that featured a weather delay that last nearly two and a half hours, Michigan’s offense, which was supposed to be an improved unit under new coordinator Doug Nussmeier, turned the ball over four times and did not reach the red zone a single time.

The Wolverines simply could not throw the ball with any consistency or success. Devin Gardner completed 14-of-27 passes for just 148 yards and two interceptions. Gardner, who was benched early in the fourth quarter for Shane Morris, looked lost at times and was the furthest thing from the senior leader he has been hyped up to be.

Though he was facing a two-score deficit, Morris was worse. The sophomore completed only four of his 13 attempts for 42 yards. He threw an interception of his own and coughed up a fumble on the Wolverines’ final drive to seal the loss.

The Wolverines had won 18 straight non-conference games at home, and despite the offense’s struggles, the defense did all it could to try to extend that streak – for the first half at least.

After Utah quarterback Travis Wilson left the game following a scary fall on a dive, Michigan defensive lineman Willie Henry intercepted Utes backup Kendal Thompson on an attempted short pass. Henry tipped the ball to himself and brought it to the house for a 7-yard touchdown to tie the score at 10-10 with 5:01 left in the first half. Thompson brushed off the mistake and led the Utes on a methodical 16-play, 54-yard drive that resulted in an Andy Phillips 38-yard field goal to give Utah a 13-10 halftime lead.

Wilson, who threw for 172 yards and a score, returned for the Utes in the second half and quickly engineered a 67-yard touchdown pass that took just five plays and 1:27. As the Michigan offense continued to sputter, the Utes chipped away and added on to their lead with two long Phillips field goals to go up 26-10.

The lead was just too much for the lifeless Wolverines to overcome. Boos were heard from the Michigan fans, and once the severe weather hit, what was once a crowd of 103,890 fans turned into an eerily empty Big House.

The Brady Hoke hot seat talk has been stewing all season, and a loss like this will only intensify things. To make matters worse, Hoke was seen arguing with defensive coordinator Greg Mattison on the sideline.

That’s not a good look as the 2-2 Wolverines enter their Big Ten slate against Minnesota next Saturday.

Conversely, Utah improved to 3-0 while looking like a surprise team that can upset some teams in the Pac-12 this season. Coming into the game, the Utes were putting up 57.5 points per game and the team’s front seven put up an impressive performance for four quarters against Michigan. After his career was in jeopardy this offseason, Wilson looks healthy and isn’t turning the ball over like he has in years past.

The Utes will likely improve to 4-0 when they host Washington State next Saturday. After that, the Utes will face five ranked conference opponents in the next six weeks.

Indiana beats No. 18 Missouri on last-minute touchdown run

Indiana beat a ranked opponent for the first time since 2006, and it did so in the final minute of a 31-27 road win over Missouri.

Senior running back D’Angelo Roberts registered the game-winning score for the Hoosiers on a diving 3-yard run with just 22 seconds to go. The score was the culmination of an impressive six-play, 75-yard response after Missouri took a 3-point lead with 2:20 to play.

The Hoosiers racked up 493 yards of total offense and ended a streak of 47 consecutive games where the Mizzou defense caused a turnover. Junior Nate Sudfeld was solid for IU, throwing for 252 yards and a score, but the Hoosiers' ground attack was the story. A three-pronged attack of Roberts, Tevin Coleman and Devine Redding combined for 246 yards on 44 carries. Coleman led the way with 132 yards and his 44-yard catch-and-run on a swing pass from Sudfeld set up Indiana’s winning score.

Maty Mauk threw for 334 yards and two scores for the Tigers, while running back Russell Hansbrough added 119 yards on just ten carries. With 12 catches for 153 yards, Bud Sasser was Mauk’s favorite target.

The two teams were fairly even for much of the ballgame and things were tied at 17 at halftime. Indiana scored late in the third quarter on a J-Shun Harris II touchdown catch late in the third, but the Tigers quickly tied things up again three minutes later when Mauk hit Sean Culkin on a one-yard pass.

After a series of punts, Mizzou regained possession with 6:34 to go. Mauk led the Tigers down into the red zone, but the Hoosiers’ defense forced a 40-yard Andrew Baggett field goal to give Mizzou a 27-24 lead.

When Indiana took over on offense, it quickly faced a fourth-and-6, but were bailed out by a Missouri pass-interference penalty. Sudfeld hit Coleman for 44 yards on the next play, leading to Roberts' game-winning TD run and the upset over the defending SEC East champions.

Following a rough loss to Bowling Green, the Indiana win elevated its record to 2-1. Additionally, the win is an unexpected boon for the Big Ten in what has been an encouraging weekend for the downtrodden conference. Indiana’s win, coupled with Iowa’s win over Pitt and Maryland’s win over Syracuse gives the conference three of its four wins over Power Five teams this season.

For Mizzou, this one stings. Coming off a dominant win over UCF, the Tigers (3-1) were set to start 4-0 heading into the SEC schedule. Things will only get more difficult from here on out.

From the look on FSU coach Jimbo Fisher's face in this video, it did not seem to be a team decision to allow Winston to warm up in his pads.

Unless Winston did something during warmups, it's hard to imagine why there would be a look of disgust on Fisher's face. If Winston did in fact wear the pads himself, it's an incredibly poor decision. But at the same time, we haven't come to expect good decisions from Winston outside of games during his tenure at Florida State.

Winston is suspended for the entire game against Clemson after he yelled an obscene remark on Tuesday while standing on a table at Florida State's student union. He was initially suspended for the first half of the game but the suspension was upped to a full game on Friday night after Winston reportedly did not own up to his actual role in the incident to FSU officials.

Sean Maguire is starting for Winston.

Alabama weathers turnovers and shows the many ways it can beat a team

Alabama wants everyone to know that it’s not going anywhere.

While much of the nation’s attention has been on teams such as Oregon and Oklahoma, Alabama showed during its 42-21 win against Florida on Saturday that it’s in as much of a hunt for a national championship as anyone else.

It also showed it might have a better and more complete team than anyone else, too.

Alabama was not perfect against Florida — it had an astounding four turnovers — but it also kept its composure in the face of those mistakes. The defense was strong, holding the Florida offense to just 200 total yards. And quarterback Blake Sims had the game of his career with 445 passing yards and four touchdowns on 23 completions.

But when the game was tied at 21 in the second half, Alabama turned to its bread and butter — its ground game.

Derrick Henry did yeoman’s-like work juking defenders and pushing the pile. His effort in conjunction with fellow back T.J. Yeldon, wore the Florida defense down and ultimately secured the game. Sims only threw for a little more than 100 yards in the second half while the running game did the work.

That’s what makes Alabama so scary.

Sims can throw for 335 yards in the first half, the game can be tied and the Tide can not only win, but dominate, by going to a completely different facet of its offense. How many teams can do that? Better question: How many teams would have the confidence to do that?

Florida is not the top of the SEC, it might not even be the middle, but it provided a good look at all the options Alabama has at its disposal to beat an opponent.

And that's not only a championship quality, it's also pretty scary.

BYU staves off Virginia 41-33, remains undefeated

BYU's undefeated season continues after the Cougars defeated Virginia 41-33 on Saturday.

Virginia's trip to Provo, Utah, was a potential trap game for the Cougars after the Cavaliers defeated Louisville in week three. Plus, The Cavaliers got the Cougars at Virginia last year, winning 17-14.

There was no Virginia win this season.

The Cavaliers led at halftime but BYU scored 14 points in the third quarter to take control of the game. Both touchdowns were on the ground. One was courtesy of QB Taysom Hill on a tackle-breaking 15-yard run and the other was from RB Jamaal Williams, who scored from two yards out.

Virginia tried to answer in the fourth quarter, but with the exception of the Cavaliers' final score, which came with 1:48 left in the fourth quarter, the next score after every Virginia one was by BYU.

Hill finished with 187 yards passing and 72 yards rushing.

BYU's schedule is one of the most favorable of anyone's to go undefeated. While the Cougars' schedule isn't easy -- trips to Central Florida and Boise State aren't guarantees -- they now have potentially the best shot of anyone in college football to go undefeated.

However, it may not do them any good. If the Cougars keep winning, you'll keep hearing about it. Because of its schedule as an independent, a potentially undefeated BYU team has a miniscule chance of making the College Football Playoff.

But if the Cougars keep winning, who knows. College football armaggedon may happen and we may be left with an undefeated BYU team as the only team without a loss.

For Virginia, it's a promising loss. It's an adjective that doesn't fit well with the noun, but the Cavaliers, projected to be one of the worst teams in the ACC, have lost to two top-25 teams by single digits. In a weak ACC, the bowl chances for Virginia look much higher than they were before the season and another upset or two in the ACC doesn't look farfetched at all.

Melvin Gordon's big day moves him atop career yards per carry charts

Melvin Gordon now holds a lofty perch in college football history. The question now becomes if he can keep it.

The Wisconsin RB ran for a staggering 253 yards and five touchdowns on just 13 carries in the Badgers' 68-17 blowout win against Bowling Green on Saturday. The incredible 19.5 yards per carry means Gordon now has the most yards per carry of any running back in college football.

Enering the game the career leader was Glenn Davis, who played at Army from 1944-1946. While partnering with FB Doc Blanchard, the two formed a Mr. Outside (Davis) and Mr. Inside (Blanchard) combination. For his career, Davis averaged 8.26 yards per carry.

With his monster game, Gordon, a senior, currently has 2,759 career yards on 321 carries, an average that works out to approximately 8.6 yards a carry. Before the game, Gordon's average was 8.13.

While two of Gordon's TDs were two and three yards each, he made up for them with TD runs of 21, 50 and 69 yards. It's crazy to think, but his average could have been better too. He also had a carry for no gain and a carry for a loss of a yard.

Yes, it's still early, but Gordon is still firmly in the Heisman Trophy race, especially with the likely elimination of Florida State QB Jameis Winston after his suspension against Clemson. While Wisconsin did lose in week one to LSU, Gordon was a nonfactor in the second half because of a hip flexor injury. If Wisconsin keeps winning, the Badgers' struggles without Gordon (and his importance) will be magnified. He certainly looked completely healthy Saturday.

Gordon will have some serious work to do to keep ahead of Davis. If he averages 7.5 yards per carry over his next 100 attempts, his average will be just north of 8.3 for his career. But based off his incredibly productive junior season, it's possible. He ran for 1,609 yards on 206 carries, an average of 7.8 yards per rush in 2013.

If he can hold on to the record throughout the entire season, he'll garner some serious Heisman attention. Breaking a record that has stood for almost 70 years isn't taken lightly.

Virginia Tech QB Michael Brewer scored after scooping up a teammate's fumble (GIF)

After throwing a brutal pick-six to give Georgia Tech a 17-16 lead, Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Brewer made a heads-up play in the fourth quarter that may end up being the difference in the game for the Hokies.

On the seventh play of the drive that followed the interception, Brewer handed the ball off to freshman tailback Marshawn Williams on a first-and-10 from the Georgia Tech 31-yard line. Williams carried the ball left, then cut back right and fumbled. Several GT players attempted to fall on the fumble, but the ball bounced away and it was none other than Brewer who was Johnny on the spot.

He scooped up the fumble and ran it in from 21 yards out for the go-ahead score.

The Hokies then converted a two-point conversion to increase the lead to 24-17.

In addition to the score on the fumble, Brewer has thrown for 297 yards and run for 50 yards so far in the ball game.

East Carolina WR Cam Worthy suspended two games for school conduct code violation

East Carolina announced prior to its game against North Carolina on Saturday that star senior receiver Cam Worthy has been suspended two games for a school student code of conduct violation.

According to a release from the school, ECU’s Office of Rights and Responsibilities handed out the suspension during a review hearing prior to the game. The suspension is a result of an argument Worthy had with another male student this past summer.

Worthy has been suspended from all school activities through Oct. 4.

“Since I arrived at ECU we have always had a strong disciplinary response to any actions by our players,” McNeill said in the statement. “Cam is an outstanding young man with an exemplary record as a student and representative of our football program. His family has been involved and fully supportive throughout this process as has our entire football family.”

This is a huge blow to East Carolina. Worthy led the Pirates with 302 receiving yards and had six catches for 224 yards during the upset of Virginia Tech last week.

Iowa WR Damond Powell makes awesome one-handed catch against Pitt (GIF)

Iowa, known for its conservative run-first offense, has opened up its playbook a bit on the road against Pitt.

After taking a couple shots down field and even scoring on a fourth down play-action pass in the first half, the Hawkeyes went deep again on its fourth play of the third quarter.

On a first-and-10 from the 20, backup quarterback C.J. Beathard took a deep drop and fired a strike downfield toward senior wideout Damond Powell. The pass was slightly overthrown, but Powell managed to corral it in smoothly with one hand for a 63-yard gain down to the Pitt 17-yard line.

It is definitely one of the better catches we’ve seen in a few weeks and the fact that Powell hauled the pass in so nonchalantly makes it even more impressive.

The big gain set up a Mark Weisman 10-yard touchdown run three plays later to narrow the Hawkeyes’ deficit to 17-14.

Pitt currently leads 20-17 late in the third quarter.

The 'T' was stolen from Virginia Tech's Lane S_adium

The “T” has gone missing from Lane Stadium — again.

Virginia Tech fans rolled up to Lane Stadium for Saturday’s game only to see the “T” in Stadium had been pried off the wall.

While Georgia Tech faithful have not claimed ownership of the prank, this is a time-honored tradition by students at the school. According to lore, Georgia Tech students have been stealing the "T" from the Tech Tower on their campus since the 1960s, but in recent years, the prank has been made part of this rivalry when Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech meet in Blacksburg, Va.

Unfortunately, the last time Georgia Tech pulled this prank in 2012, its team lost 20-17 in overtime.

Behold the LSU Tigers coffin cooler (Photo)

This LSU fan takes the term "Death Valley" seriously.

Death Valley is the nickname for LSU's Tiger Stadium and this LSU fan has decided to create an LSU Tiger-striped cooler out of a coffin.

Nobody tailgates quite like LSU. http://t.co/AY2EVxBUy9 http://ift.tt/XS0hrD

— Fancred (@Fancred) September 20, 2014

It's got ample space, as you can see. But portability would be an issue. You can't simply put that thing in the trunk and head out to the tailgate.

But this person clearly has the space. We appreciate the ingenuity and we have to wonder how in the world you can find a coffin cheap enough to use it as a cooler. Craigslist?
