Reports: Washington State hires Mizzou's Alex Grinch as DC

(Getty Images) More than a month after Washington State fired Mike Breske, the Cougars reportedly have hired his replacement.

According to FootballScoop.com, PowerMizzou.com, and WazzuWatch.com, WSU head coach Mike Leach reached into the SEC and hired Missouri safeties coach Alex Grinch to lead the Cougars’ defense.

Leach later confirmed the hire to Fox Sports.

Grinch, who has never been a defensive coordinator at any level, has coached safeties at Mizzou under Gary Pinkel, his father-in-law, for the past three seasons and developed a reputation for being one of the better recruiters on Pinkel’s staff.

Before arriving at Missouri, Grinch coached defensive backs at Wyoming from 2009-2011, at New Hampshire from 2005-2008 and was a graduate assistant with the Tigers from 2002-2004.

Grinch will now have the task of improving a Washington State defense that was No. 97 nationally in total defense (442.3 ypg) and No. 114 nationally in scoring defense (38.6 ppg). Additionally, the Cougars forced only eight turnovers for the entire season.

The Cougars took a step back and finished 3-9 in Leach’s third season with the program after reaching a bowl game in 2013.

Grinch is the second defensive coach to leave Missouri in this offseason. Defensive coordinator Dave Steckel left to accept the head-coaching job at Missouri State and Pinkel hired Barry Odom to replace him.

LSU hires Ed Orgeron as defensive line coach

A day after hiring Kevin Steele as defensive coordinator, LSU has added another coaching veteran to its defensive staff.

The program announced on Wednesday that Ed Orgeron, the longtime USC assistant who took over as interim head coach after the firing of Lane Kiffin in 2013, will coach the Tigers’ defensive line.

Welcome home, @Coach_EdOrgeron! #LSU #GeauxTigers http://ift.tt/1symWru

— LSU Football (@LSUfball) January 14, 2015

Orgeron spent 2014 away from coaching after not getting the full-time head-coaching gig with the Trojans and now he’ll join Les Miles’ staff in his home state of Louisiana.

In addition to coaching defensive line at USC from 2010-13 and 1998-2004, Orgeron was also the program’s recruiting coordinator. Previously, Orgeron was the head coach at Ole Miss from 2005-07 and was an assistant at Tennessee, Syracuse, Nicholls State, Miami (FL), Arkansas, McNeese State and Northwestern State. He also spent a year in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints.

Orgeron has long been known as one of the nation’s best recruiters and he helped USC bring in Top 10 recruiting classes in 2010, 2011 and 2012 – including the No. 1 class in 2010.

LSU, which finished 8-5, ranked ninth nationally this season in total defense (316.8 yards per game) and also fifth in scoring defense (17.5 points allowed per game).

Iowa State WR Jauan Wesley charged with OWI

Iowa State Cyclones wide receiver Jauan Wesley (18) runs with the ball against Oklahoma State. (Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports) Iowa State wideout Jauan Wesley has been suspended after an early Tuesday morning arrest.

According to the Ames Tribune, Iowa State Police found Wesley “in a car with marijuana” and charged him with operating while intoxicated (OWI).

Police received a call about a suspicious vehicle at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and encountered two passengers in “a running black Pontiac.”

Wesley was the driver while the passenger, Cavion Clanton, “was found holding a marijuana cigarette.” Clanton was charged with possession of a controlled substance and Wesley was given a field sobriety test, which “came back with a preliminary positive test for THC.”

In a statement, Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said that Wesley is suspended indefinitely.

“We are aware of the charges filed against Jauan, and we are disappointed,” Rhoads said. “Jauan has been suspended indefinitely from the football team under the student-athlete code of conduct policy.”

Wesley recently finished his true freshman season with the Cyclones. He played in eight games and caught 10 passes for 107 yards.

Furniture store owes $1.5 million in rebates after Ohio State win

Approximately 500 customers are getting free furniture thanks to Ohio State's win against Oregon.

Like many other big-game promotions, Morris Furniture Company ran a money-back special before Ohio State's College Football Playoff National Championship matchup against Oregon. The terms were simple; if Ohio State, the underdog, won the game by more than 7 points, customers who purchased more than $1,999 in furniture got their money back.

As you know, the Buckeyes won 42-20.

The promotion was good at 15 Ohio-area Morris Home Furnishings and Ashley Home Furniture stores. As you can imagine, the people who are benefitting from the promotion are incredibly happy. The total value of the reimbursed purchases is near $1.5 million.

From the Dayton Daily News.

"They are thrilled,” Morris Home Furniture Store vice president of marketing and advertising Rob Klaben said. “The promotion created a lot of great conversations in our showrooms.”

A third-party company underwrote the promotion and will pay out the money, Klaben said. Customers will have to return to the store to fill out a claim form to get their money back.

Asked if his company regretted making the promotion, Klaben said, “Absolutely not.”

“It’s been a great story for the Buckeyes and it has created good buzz for our stores,” Klaben said.

The promotion ran for roughly the last half of December.

It's also fitting that the 2014 season ends with a free furniture giveaway. After all, it began with one too. A College Station, Texas, Ashley Furniture Store gave away $1 million in free furniture after Texas A&M beat South Carolina in the first big-conference game of the season in August.

We'll see if Ashley stores keep the promotions going in 2015.

Did Jameis Winston break transfer news on his Instagram account?

Houston quarterback John O'Korn is seeking a transfer. Was his new school revealed on Jameis Winston's Instagram account?

You're forgiven if you're immediately wondering how those two sentences fit together. We'll explain.

Winston was with O'Korn while attending Lakewood Church, the church of famous pastor Joel Osteen. The Florida State quarterback and likely high pick in the 2015 NFL draft posted a picture of the two together (and a picture of himself with Osteen) to his Instagram account with the following caption:

S/O to my dawg @johnokorn5 the next great QB at the University of Texas! for the great experience of attending @lakewoodchurch and having the honor to meet Mr. Joel Osteen #heavilyFavored

Here's the picture.

O'Korn transferring to Texas wouldn't be a surprise. The Longhorns have been mentioned as one of his possible landing spots and Texas is certainly in need of a quarterback. Tyrone Swoopes struggled in 2014 after replacing David Ash, who was forced to retire because of concussions.

O'Korn started the 2014 season as Houston's quarterback but lost his job to former receiver Greg Ward, who became the Cougars' starter as the season went on. O'Korn's last game as a starter was against UCF in October.

He finished the season 90-173 passing for 951 yards and threw for six touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Oregon's Arik Armstead heading to the NFL draft

Oregon defensive star Arik Armstead is going pro.

Armstead made his declaration official Tuesday night on Oregon's official website. A 6-8, 290-pound junior defensive lineman, he's a likely early pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

"After three years preparing with my teammates and coaches, I feel I'm ready to test myself at the next level," Armstead said via GoDucks.com. "All the support I've received from [Oregon defensive coordinator Ken Pellum] and [defensive line coach Ron Aiken], the rest of the Oregon coaches and staff and in my academics has prepared me to make this jump."

“I’ve had an awesome three years here, and I'm so happy I made the decision to be a Duck. I want to thank my coaches, the academic support and athletic training staffs, the Eugene community and Duck fans everywhere for supporting me throughout my three years here. I’ll always be a Duck.”

Armstead finished the 2014 season with 46 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. In Monday night's national title game, Armstead recovered the fumble Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones committed when he dropped the ball while scrambling to his right.
