Ohio State QB Braxton Miller is healthy and coach Urban Meyer wants him to stay that way

Quarterback Braxton Miller hasn't played an injury-free season during his time at Ohio State, but coach Urban Meyer thinks this season could change that.

During Big Ten media days on Monday, Meyer said Miller, who missed all of spring practices, was healthy after recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

"He is ready to go," Meyer said. "He's full speed, best shape he's ever been in his life."

Miller suffered the injury in the 40-35 loss to Clemson in the Orange Bowl, one of the many injuries Miller has suffered during his three playing seasons at Ohio State. Many of those injuries have been a product of Miller's scrambling. Miller, who is one of the nation’s best dual-threat quarterbacks, has rushed 557 times for 3,054 yards during his career.

But Miller said despite offseason conditioning and bulking up from 212 pounds to 221 pounds, he doesn’t plan to take the same kind of hits he’s taken in past seasons.

Braxton Miller up to 221 pounds (from 212) but still feels faster. As for taking same pounding as last year? "That ain't gonna happen."

— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerCBS) July 28, 2014

But keeping Miller healthy will really be dependent on an offensive line that’s made up of four new starters. Meyer said he likes the group’s work ethic, but he won’t know what he’s got until they get into a game situation.

“Concern No. 1, I mean, that's it,” Meyer said of his offensive line. “There's a bunch of concerns you always have. It's A through F, A through Z, A through X, whatever it is. But the number one on the list is development of that offensive line for the reasons you just said, among many other.

“You want to win that game, but protecting our quarterback is paramount. I don't want to say that's all our focus, but that's where a lot of our focus is right now.”

Michigan AD: NCAA facing 'tumultuous' period

Big Ten media day: Pat Fitzgerald apologizes to Nebraska; Bo Pelini's cat makes Chicago debut

Unlike the other power conferences, the Big Ten jam packs its media day festivities into one day where all 14 conference head coaches, along with players from each team, address reporters in Chicago.

There wasn’t a whole lot of noise made at this year’s event, but now that Rutgers and Maryland have become official members, the league has re-aligned into an eastern and western division.

The west has already been pegged by league media as the weaker of the two divisions, but coaches aren’t looking at it that way. Wisconsin, despite its question marks on offense, is considered the top contender in the division, largely because of what is said to be a weaker schedule against its west division counterparts.

Badgers head coach Gary Andersen doesn’t buy that theory.

"We're all going to put our helmets on and go out on play,” Andersen said. “That will define this year's teams. So to sit here now and say this division is this and this division is that based off traditions of a school, I don't buy that. There's tremendous tradition and both teams on both sides. We'll all fight it out in the defining moment and we'll see who's who."

Pat Fitzgerald says his team is 'united,' apologizes to Nebraska

On his home turf in Chicago, Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald, coming off a disappointing 5-7 season, kicked things off Monday morning. Fitzgerald, entering his ninth season in charge of the Wildcats, expressed excitement about having senior quarterback Trevor Siemian and fifth-year running back Venric Mark back on offense.

He also alluded to the unionization effort from the spring as a “distraction” and discussed the mood of the team in the months following the NLRB ruling and subsequent closed-ballot vote.

“I'm proud of the maturity our guys demonstrated throughout the whole process that we went through this offseason,” Fitzgerald said. “As I look back and reflect upon the experiences that our young men went through and our entire football program went through, that's what jumps out to me is their maturity. I believe there's no more unified football program in the country.”

Additionally, Fitzgerald offered an apology to Nebraska fans for saying the Cornhusker State is “boring.”

"I make a bad joke. I own a bad joke," Fitzgerald said, per the Lincoln Journal Star. "I've only spent two days in the state so I don't quite have the experience level to say whether it is or it isn't. But it was a bad joke."

Hazell looking for improvement in year two

Darrell Hazell’s first year in the Big Ten was a rough one. The Purdue head coach didn’t win a conference game in a 1-11 campaign, but the second-year head coach believes he and his coaching staff laid the groundwork for future success in the program.

“I think our guys are walking around with a lot more confidence right now,” Hazell said. “We didn't finish as well as we'd like to last year. But I think this is the time where you rip off the rearview mirror and you take a look at what's in front of you and all the things that we need to do to be successful in this 2014 season.”

Hazell’s Boilermakers return 19 starters, but he didn’t want to specify if he had any sort of goal in mind for the 2014 campaign – other than competing on a weekly basis and erasing last year’s disastrous season from his team’s collective mind.

Hazell also mentioned that the team has a 6-foot-8, 400-pound offensive guard who transferred to the team from a junior college. That certainly is #B1G.

Illinois looks to replace Scheelhaase

Next up was Tim Beckman of Illinois, who on his 15th attempt, finally won a Big Ten game last season. Now in year three at the helm, Beckman said he has 34 returning players who were on the two-deep depth chart last season. He hopes that’ll translate into more wins.

“We're still a very young football team, but we're an experienced football team,” Beckman said. “This program is heading in the direction that we are looking for, but we want to win more football games. There's no question about that. That's why we play the game.”

After it seemed like he had been in the Big Ten forever, Illinois finally is looking for a quarterback to succeed Nathan Scheelhaase. Beckman said that Wes Lunt, Reilly O’Toole and Aaron Bailey are battling it out to earn the starting role.

“It’s going to be a great competition. We look forward to it, and I know they look forward to it.”

Minnesota is 'starving'

It was more of the same when Minnesota’s Jerry Kill took to the podium. Kill’s squad surprised some people last season with eight wins, but the head coach said his team should be “starving” for more success. The 2013 campaign ended in a disappointing three-game losing streak, including a 21-17 Texas Bowl loss to Syracuse.

“When we came back from our Bowl game and we had a team meeting, I shared with our kids: Right now you should be starving,” Kill said. “We made some great strides last year. We did some good things. We've done some things that hadn't been done for a while. We want to continue to improve on what we did last year.

“If you don't have a mission to win the Big Ten, then why play?”

Kill added that Mitch Leidner will be the team’s starting quarterback and Chris Streveler will be the primary backup.

Bo Pelini's cat made its Chicago debut

Switching gears a bit, Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini reiterated his thoughts about national signing day, saying it should be eliminated from recruiting.

“I said publicly I believe it would be a great idea if we would look at maybe getting rid of signing day,” Pelini said. “That's something that I think would make a lot of sense. You come to an agreement, somebody commits to your school, you've made a commitment to a young man to come play in your program, why do we have to wait to any certain day?”

Despite have a few blowups in the media and on the sideline last season, Pelini has showcased his lighter side on several occasions, especially when he brought his beloved cat onto the field before the spring game. Pelini said that he is “pretty laid back” away from the field. He also supposedly brought a friend with him to Chi-Town.

“First of all, my cat is‑‑ he's enjoying a nap up in the room. So he is here in Chicago and enjoying the Windy City.”

Ferentz expects improvement from Rudock

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, the conference’s longest-tenured coach, was saved for last. He was quick to acknowledge this.

"When I played little league I batted 9th. Guess I've moved down five spots."

The assembled reporters must have been a little weary after listening to 13 other coaches toss off clichés all day, so Ferentz’s session was shorter than the rest. Ferentz praised senior lineman (and weightlifting monster) Brandon Scherff, along with running back Mark Weisman and added that quarterback Jake Rudock has made strides as he enters his second year as starter.

"People tend to get better if they've got the right attitude, a good skill set. And I think we saw that with Jake in the spring. He's certainly more confident. You can't hand confidence to a player; they've got to go out and earn it on the field," Ferentz said.

Larry Fedora has visible six-pack abs (Photo)

Welcome to our Dr. Saturday feature titled "Random offseason tweet of the day." With real games still weeks away, coaches and players will be tweeting about non-football-related things as the season approaches. In this space, we'll try to find the funniest and goofiest tweets of the day. If you see something, don't hesitate to send it to us.

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora has better abs than a lot of his football players. Just look at this picture of him from the beach.

Larry Fedora, w/daughter, on his 6-pack abs secret: “No beer, no cardio, lift weights 45 minutes 4 days/week” http://ift.tt/1pxDmbY

— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) July 28, 2014

The "no cardio" that Fedora likely refers to is a lack of running or other hamster work at the gym on an elliptical or stairclimber. Instead, his cardio is coming via his weightlifting sessions.

Yes, weightlifting can be cardio too. The lifting sessions Fedora is engaging in are probably raising his heart rate above and beyond what it would be at through a session of steady-state running or pedaling. And there's likely little rest time between sets either.

The method of "no cardio" is an extremely effective one too. You can burn lots of calories in an intense weightlifting session and get stronger at the same time. That's a double-benefit. Add in a caloric deficit and weight loss happens.

WIll you look as good as Fedora? Well, genetics play a large role too. But his secret above really isn't much of a secret at all. It's just underutilized.

(We'd be remiss not to link to EDSBS's wonderful post about Fedora's abs. He's a man who has whacked a tire with a sledgehammer before.)

Michigan State's Mark Dantonio claims the Spartans are 'one of the hunted'

Mark Dantonio didn’t want to put his team on too high of a pedestal.

Sure, Michigan State is coming off its best season in school history with a 13-1 record, Big Ten title and the first Rose Bowl crown since 1988, but Dantonio is trying to temper expectations in a league where the Spartans aren’t even the favorite this year.

“First of all, I termed ourselves one of the hunted, so I think that’s important to recognize — not ‘the hunted,'” Dantonio said during Big Ten media day on Monday. “We’re not looking for any entitlement, anybody to put us up there. We’ll get what we earn. Every game will be a challenge, beginning with our first game … We’ve had a knack for winning football games these last couple years, but we’ve also taken a step back at times. It’s important that we understand that we’ve done that.

“We’ve stuck our foot in the ground and driven forward when those things have happened. We found the inches last year, We have to continue to find those inches and gain even more ground because respectability could fly right out the window on us. I understand that. It’s what we’ve done lately that you’re basically judged on. We continue to build our future as we move forward.”

To show how fleeting success can be, Michigan State was picked by Big Ten media to finish second in the East Division behind Ohio State, a team the Spartans beat to capture the conference crown a year ago.

But Dantonio knows credibility comes with consistency. And while the Spartans have won at least 11 games in three of the past four seasons, it also had a 7-6 slipup in 2012.

The Spartans return five players from a defense that ranked in the top three in the four main defensive statistical categories a year ago. Seven players return on offense, including quarterback Connor Cook, who came into his own in the postseason when his performances earned him Big Ten championship game MVP and Rose Bowl offensive MVP.

But more than anything on the field, Dantonio knows his team is going to have to deal with expectations off it. It’s uncharted territory for Dantonio and the Spartans, and while they welcome the newfound respect, they know that they have to take the next step to keep it.

“I think the Big Ten Conference, you’ve always got attention coming your way,” Dantonio said. “It’s what you do with that and how you handle that, so what we’ve tried to talk about, really, is how do we handle success now? We’ve had success, we’ve gotten to a point where we’ve done some special things. What’s our agenda next? How do we handle that success? And that’s going to be really one of the biggest things we’re going to have to deal with this year.

“I think we’re a little bit more of the hunted,” Dantonio added. “That’s a good place to be, but it’s also a very precarious place to be as well.”

Former Tennessee tailback Corey Larkins: 'Derek Dooley was a loser'

Returning Tennessee to its former glory has not been easy.

Since the Vols won the national title in 1998, they have won 10 or more games just four times, had six losing seasons, including four straight, and are on their third coach since Philip Fulmer was forced out in 2008.

And while many of the former players think Tennessee is on its way back behind second-year coach Butch Jones, it’s hard for them to let go out the years since Fulmer's departure.

"I really don't even want to say the names of the two guys who were there between Coach Fulmer and Coach Jones,” former linebacker Al Wilson told the Times Free Press. Wilson was one of several former Tennessee players working a youth football camp this past weekend and asked about his thoughts on the state of the program.

“They don't deserve to have their names mentioned with Tennessee football. As somebody who went 45-5 while I was at UT, that's a place I care a lot about and I'm just glad that there's somebody in charge again who gets it and who wants to be there and take the program back to where it was and where it should be.”

Wilson wasn’t the only one who had unkind words for Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley, two coaches who bridged the gap — poorly — between Fulmer and the current regime. Kiffin spent just one year with the Vols, got the team in hot water with the NCAA and then bolted for USC. Dooley came from Louisiana Tech, struggled to a 15-21 record in three seasons and made very few friends among the former alumni.

"With Coach Jones, when you walk into the facility now it's like you never left,” said former fullback Troy Fleming, who was with the Vols from 1999-2003. “The guys who have worked around the program for years are at ease now, which tells you things are good again. The biggest thing about Coach Jones is he actually does his job. Unlike that guy we call Derek Doolittle, who really did very little.”

And these were the kind comments.

Former tailback Corey Larkins, who played from 2000-03, blamed the losing mentality the Vols had seemingly adopted on Dooley’s inability to foster a winning attitude.

"I just want to see some fight,” Larkins said. “I've seen our guys for the last few years not only get beat to the ground, but then the other players push up off their chest to go back to the huddle and our guys just got up and walked back to the huddle. I want to see some guys with some fight and defend the program. That mentality came from the guy we had before Coach Jones. Derek Dooley was a loser. He'll always be a loser and he rubbed off on the program and created a losing attitude."

If there’s a positive, it’s that these former players think Jones can turn the program around. However, they might not want to be holding their breath for that to happen this season. Just about half of Tennessee’s team this season is new and with key positions, including quarterback, undecided heading into fall camp, the growing pains will be numerous.

But if some of the high-level recruits Jones has brought in pan out, the future for Tennessee could be very bright and perhaps the vitriol toward Kiffin and Dooley will subside.

Two LSU freshmen arrested in separate incidents

Two LSU true freshmen were arrested in separate incidents on campus last week.

Trey Lealaimatafao and Davon Godchaux, both defensive linemen, will be “disciplined internally” and have already met with head coach Les Miles, LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette told NOLA.com.

LSU police said that Lealaimatafao, a defensive tackle from San Antonio, Texas, was arrested for stealing a bicycle. The incident allegedly took place on July 1 when the bike was stolen near the Middleton Library on campus.

Per NOLA.com:

Investigators identified Lealaimatafao from surveillance footage in the area and made contact with him on Thursday. He admitted taking the bike and told investigators he thought it was permissible if the bike was not secured, Lalonde said. The bike was returned to the victim Thursday.

This is the second incident involving the 17-year-old Lealaimatafao in his short time on campus. Last week, Lealaimatafao was hospitalized after punching a glass window in the Tigers’ weight room, severely injuring his arm. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday. Lealaimatafao, a three-star recruit, is expected to miss the season due to the arm injury.

Elsewhere, Godchaux, 19, was arrested July 21 for criminal mischief. The 19-year-old defensive end was identified as a suspect in an incident where firecrackers were thrown “into a unit at LSU’s West Campus Apartments.” Police said that Godchaux admitted to throwing the firecrackers, which started a small fire and damaged a sofa.

Godchaux, a four-star recruit from Plaquemine, La., said throwing the fireworks was supposed to be a prank.

Several question marks exist on offense for Wisconsin

Everyone knows about Melvin Gordon.

The Wisconsin running back mulled leaving for the NFL, but the 1,600-yard rusher is back in Madison for his redshirt junior season. He’s ready to tear up the Big Ten again, but for second-year head coach Gary Andersen, he’s one of a few known commodities on the Badgers’ offense heading into the 2014 season.

The offensive line is stout like most Wisconsin lines in past seasons have been, but wide receiver, with Jared Abbrederis (78 catches, 1,081 yards, 7 TDs) out of the picture, is the offense’s weakest link.

“Offensively – there’s lots of questions. Wide receiver is a big question mark and it’s been talked about a lot. We need a couple young men to step up,” Andersen said Monday at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago.

It’s not easy to replace a player as productive as Abbrederis, a recent draft choice of the Green Bay Packers. One player is not going to do it, but Andersen pointed to a few different guys who can collectively fill the void.

“We have to replace Jared with two or three players,” Andersen said. “Now, there's some young men in that program that Wisconsin football means a lot to. Kenzel Doe has had an unbelievable offseason, a very good spring, became dynamic at the end of the year in the return game. He'll be a presence for us in that situation. Jordan Fredrick has had his role. Alex Erickson has had his role. The challenge is for the youth to step up.”

In addition to Doe (7 catches, 57 yards in 2013), Fredrick (10 catches, 106 yards) and Erickson (9 catches, 127 yards), Andersen also named sophomore Robert Wheelwright and redshirt freshman Jazz Peavy as two guys who “need to be ready to step up.”

Another question on offense is who exactly will be delivering the ball to these untested receivers.

Joel Stave, who started all 13 games for the Badgers last season, returns, but Andersen hardly offered him a vote of confidence Monday. In fact, Andersen said the position is “an open competition” between Stave and Tanner McEvoy.

McEvoy started his career at South Carolina, but transferred to a junior college before landing with the Badgers in the summer of 2013. He arrived on campus as a quarterback, but then moved to wide receiver when the season began. Soon after, a wrist injury moved him over to safety, where he started three games. With the wrist healed, the 6-foot-6, 222-pound McEvoy is back in the picture at QB.

“Joel Stave and Tanner McEvoy will come in and split the reps. It’s going to be interesting to watch,” Andersen said. “The kids are handling it very well amongst themselves and they're also handling it very well amongst the team. It’s no different than the battle that may be taking place at a wide receiver position. It works itself out.”

Stave injured his throwing shoulder in the Capital One Bowl, which limited him in practice and allowed for McEvoy to take a significant portion of the reps in the spring. On top of that, McEvoy’s athleticism allows for Andersen to implement more spread formations into the offense, similar to what he ran during his time at Utah State.

“I would say he's an elite athlete,” Andersen said. “But the way he moves around in his size, his ability to ‑‑ the speed he runs with, I think he runs very, very well. He's elusive and he's smart. He allows you to do some things offensively to force defenses to understand that if you make a mistake, he's more than willing to take off and make you pay.”

Andersen said there’s no timetable in terms of naming his starter for the season opening matchup against LSU in Houston. It will certainly be one of the more intriguing position battles in the Big Ten to monitor.

Utah QB Travis Wilson cited for underage drinking

Utah quarterback Travis Wilson was cited for possession and consumption of alcohol by a minor Friday night.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the 20-year-old Wilson was attending a Tim McGraw concert in Salt Lake City, was cited into West Valley Justice Court and subsequently “released at the scene.”

Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham released a statement acknowledging the incident.

“We are still in the process of gathering information on the incident,” Whittingham said. “Once we have all the facts, we will handle the situation internally and determine any disciplinary action that should be taken.”

Wilson, a junior, recently was given the thumbs up to continue his playing career after an intracranial artery condition was discovered following a concussion sustained against Arizona State last season. Wilson had thrown for 1,827 yards, 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions before the injury sidelined him for the rest of the season.

His career was thought to be in jeopardy, but he was cleared to participate in non-contact drills in February. After further examinations, Wilson received final medical clearance in June to continue his career with the Utes moving forward.

Despite starting 16 games over the past two seasons for the Utes, Wilson’s starting role is not set in stone heading into the 2014 season. His injury history, plus the addition of Oklahoma transfer Kendal Thompson, could result in a bit of a quarterback battle once fall camp begins.

Coming off a 5-7 season, the Utes open up the 2014 season against Idaho State at home on August 28.

Marshall dismisses star running back Kevin Grooms after arrest

Marshall running back Kevin Grooms has been dismissed from the team following a Saturday arrest.

Grooms, C-USA’s Freshman of the Year in 2012, was arrested Saturday on charges of misdemeanor domestic assault by threat, felony burglary and daytime breaking and entering, misdemeanor petit larceny and fleeing on foot. The Marshall athletic department confirmed Grooms dismissal to the Charleston Daily Mail, saying he had been dismissed for a “violation of team rules and policies.”

Grooms time with the Marshall program hasn’t been great off the field.

According to the paper, Saturday’s incident was Grooms’ third arrest since April 2013.

On April 21, 2013, Grooms was arrested on misdemeanor charges of underage drinking and obstruction. He also was one of five people named in a civil suit filed in May seeking damages after a pedestrian claimed Grooms was in a car that struck him “while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, operating said motor vehicle at excessive speed.”

Grooms also was arrested on Nov. 30, 2013 on misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and obstruction.

Grooms rushed for 737 yards in 2012, but struggled with an ankle injury in 2013. He shared carries with Essray Taliaferro and Steward Butler in 2013, and finished with 91 carries for 503 yards and six scores.
