BYU receiver Devon Blackmon said he was suspended for wearing earrings, an honor code violation
BYU transfer wide receiver Devon Blackmon tweeted Monday night that he will miss the Aug. 29 opener against UConn because of a rule violation.
Rules are rules.. Abide by them or suffer the consequences.... Looking forward to the Texas game
— DevonBlackmon (@AshantiBlackmon) August 11, 2014
Blackmon’s offense? Well, it appears to be wearing earrings.
@drewjay yea, We have team standards, and there's consequences if you don't follow them, I shouldn't wear earrings But I'll bounce back..
— DevonBlackmon (@AshantiBlackmon) August 12, 2014
While earrings might be commonplace among many football players around the country, it is an honor code violation for any man at BYU to wear them.
“A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained. Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, revealing, or form fitting. Shorts must be knee-length or longer. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extreme styles or colors, and trimmed above the collar, leaving the ear uncovered. Sideburns should not extend below the earlobe or onto the cheek. If worn, moustaches should be neatly trimmed and may not extend beyond or below the corners of the mouth. Men are expected to be clean-shaven; beards are not acceptable. Earrings and other body piercing are not acceptable. Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas.
Earlier this month, star running back Jamaal Williams was suspended after being arrested on suspicion of underage drinking, also an honor code violation. Like Blackmon, he’ll miss the UConn game, but expects to be back for the contest against Texas.
Also like Blackmon, Williams owned up to his mistake and made it publicly known. Coach Bronco Mendenhall has a policy of not discussing in-house disciplinary issues.
Blackmon seemed introspective about his suspension. While many players might have been furious about getting suspended for something as trivial as earrings, Blackmon acknowledges the rules at his school and seemed OK with the discipline.
I'm feeling so good right now.. like at peace for some reason...

N.C. State linebacker M.J. Salahuddin suffers knee injury, could miss season
N.C. State’s projected starter at middle linebacker, junior M.J. Salahuddin, suffered a knee injury in practice last week and could miss the whole season.
Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren said Sunday that the injury will require surgery, but would not comment on the severity of the injury. Per the Fayetteville Observer, Doeren did not say definitively that Salahuddin would not play in 2014, but he also pointed out that the junior still has his redshirt season available.
“Whether or not he’s out for the season, we’ll see,” Doeren said. “The silver lining for him is that he hasn’t used a redshirt. But I really hated to see this happen to M.J., like I do any player, but he is one of the better workers on the football team.”
Doeren said the injury occurred when Salahuddin was taking on a block during practice.
“It was really just a routine play. There was nothing crazy about it. He’s done it 1,000 times, a linebacker taking on a block. This time the knee didn’t react the same way. It was one of those things that sometimes you scratch your head about,” Doeren said.
The 6-foot-2, 231-pound Salahuddin started five games for the Wolfpack in 2013 and registered 25 tackles. He also appeared in 12 games on special teams as a true freshman in 2012.
Salahuddin, a native of Fayetteville, N.C., was a three-star recruit in the class of 2012.
Coming off a 3-9 season in 2013, Doeren’s squad opens the 2014 against Georgia Southern at home on August 30.

Penn State tight end Adam Breneman 'out indefinitely' with injury
One of the more promising young members of Penn State’s offense could be out for a considerable period of time.
Penn State announced Monday that sophomore tight end Adam Breneman will be “out indefinitely with an injury,” though the program declined to offer specifics on the injury or the severity of the injury. Breneman saw significant playing time in his true freshman season and caught a 68-yard touchdown in Penn State’s win over Wisconsin in the final week of the season.
In total, the 6-foot-4, 243-pound Breneman started five games for the Nittany Lions, making 15 catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns.
Blue White Illustrated is reporting that Breneman injured his left knee Monday morning and will miss “an extended period of time.” The former four-star recruit, who committed to the program amid NCAA sanctions, missed his senior year of high school due to an ACL tear in his right knee. He has his redshirt season available.
Luckily for Penn State, tight end is one of the positions on the team with the most depth. The team returns juniors Kyle Carter and Jesse James, along with redshirt freshman Brent Wilkerson and true freshman Mike Gesicki on the roster.
Carter, a 6-foot-3, 241-pound redshirt junior, was a first team All-Big Ten selection in 2012 after catching 36 passes for 453 yards and two touchdowns. He caught 18 passes for 222 yards and one score in an injury-plagued 2013 season.
The 6-foot-7, 254-pound James has 40 career catches for 609 yards and eight scores and is the team’s leading returning receiver (25 catches, 333 yards, 3 TDs in 2013).

Auburn commemorates Iron Bowl victory on wall of athletic complex (Photos)
Auburn’s last-second triumph in the 2013 Iron Bowl over Alabama will certainly go down as one of the greatest moments in program history. To commemorate Chris Davis’ game-winning 108-yard field goal return for touchdown and the ensuing celebration, the program added some fitting decorations to the wall in the school’s athletic complex.

That was definitely one of the most memorable scenes in college football last season – storming of the field and all. It’s only fitting for the program to remember that moment for years to come, especially when it comes at the expense of a bitter rival.
The Tigers will look to make additional Iron Bowl memories, but the 2014 will be played in Tuscaloosa on November 29 – the final weekend of the regular season.
We can’t wait.

NCAA seeks clarification in O'Bannon case injunction
The NCAA said on Sunday it planned to appeal last Friday’s ruling in the Ed O’Bannon antitrust lawsuit, but on Monday, it started to get into specifics, mainly asking U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken to specify when her injunction becomes effective.
On Friday, Wilken ruled that NCAA limits on what Division I football and basketball players could be paid for playing violated antitrust laws. She also issued an injunction, separate from her 99-page ruling, that would prevent the NCAA “from enforcing any rules or bylaws that would prohibit its member schools and conferences from offering their FBS football or Division I basketball recruits a limited share of the revenues generated from the use of their names, images, and likenesses in addition to a full grant-in-aid."
Wilken's ruling said the NCAA couldn’t stop student-athletes from selling the rights to their names, images and likenesses, but it would apply only to athletes who enroll after July 1, 2016, at the beginning of the next recruiting cycles.
However, the NCAA thinks the term “next recruiting cycle” is ambiguous and has asked for clarification in writing.
"Under existing NCAA rules," the NCAA wrote in its brief, "student-athletes in the next recruiting cycle (i.e., student-athletes who would first enroll in college in Fall 2016) may receive offer letters from colleges starting on August 1, 2015. ... NCAA seeks to confirm that the existing NCAA rules can remain in force until August 1, 2015."
Essentially, the NCAA is asking Wilken to specifically state that her ruling does not apply to athletes enrolled before July 1, 2016.
“Colleges are in the midst of the offer letter process for prospective student-athletes planning to start college in 2015," the NCAA lawyers wrote. "Budgets and financial aid for the coming academic year are already in place or being finalized. The status of the rules governing current and 2015 enrolling student-athletes needs to be clear as soon as possible. And as to student-athletes starting college in or after 2016, the NCAA member colleges may need to adopt new rules to address a variety of matters raised by the injunction and the Court's opinion ... As the Court's Findings appreciate, it takes time for the hundreds of Division I colleges to consider and adopt new rules."

Report: Former USC QB Max Wittek will join Hawaii later this month
After months of speculation, it looks like former USC quarterback Max Wittek will finally join Hawaii’s roster later this month. The Honululu Star-Advertiser is reporting that Wittek will be added to the Warriors’ roster as a walk-on on August 25, when rosters can expand past 105 players.
It has been a tumultuous offseason for Wittek, who announced his intent to transfer from the Trojans back in January. He had originally planned to utilize the NCAA graduate transfer rule to gain immediate eligibility to play his final two seasons at another school. The University of Texas appeared to be Wittek’s landing spot after multiple visits, but a delay in his graduation from USC altered those plans.
Instead, it appears that Wittek, if does indeed join the program, would have to sit out the 2014 season since he won’t be a graduate transfer and will eligible to suit up for the Warriors as a redshirt senior in 2015.
Wittek told the Star-Advertiser back in July that he had established a good relationship with Hawaii head coach Norm Chow.
“I feel great with coach Chow,” Wittek said at the time. “He’s awesome. He’s been so helpful through this whole process.”
Wittek, a former four-star recruit in the 2011 class, entered the 2013 in a competition for the starting quarterback role at USC but was eventually beaten out by Cody Kessler. He completed 14-of-26 passes for 212 yards and an interception in backup duty.
Additionally, Wittek saw playing time in 2012 when Matt Barkley, now with the Philadelphia Eagles, went down with an injury. He threw for 388 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions that season.

Florida State DB Jalen Ramsey tossed from practice after knocking down QB Jameis Winston
Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey, one of the Seminoles’ best players, is in hot water with his coach after a series of altercations led to him being kicked out of practice Sunday.
Ramsey got into it with several Florida State players, including knocking quarterback Jameis Winston to the ground, which prompted coach Jimbo Fisher to toss his freshman All-American out of practice.
"It ain't typical. It's not what we're going to do," Fisher told media after practice. "He was told not to do something and he defied me. So we'll judge from there. And I'm very upset with him. It's lack of leadership. It's lack of character.
"He'll decide if he wants to play at Florida State."
Prior to knocking Winston over, Ramsey got into a tussle with starting running back Karlos Williams and shoved receiver Kermit Whitfield in the back after a play. Also, during a non-tackling period, Ramsey took out tight end Ryan Izzo.
Winston hit the turf after a blitzing Ramsey pushed Williams into the Heisman Trophy winner’s legs.
That was the last straw for Fisher, who yelled at Ramsey while he exited to the locker room through the stadium tunnel. Florida State practices are usually closed to the public, but this practice was open to fans because it was the annual media/fan day, which includes a meet-and-greet and autograph session.
"You're going to do things my way or they're not going to play here," Fisher said. "When I tell somebody to do something and they don't do it, it's serious. That's how you have problems."
Last season, Ramsey, who started 14 games, became the first freshman to start at cornerback for Florida State since Deion Sanders. He finished the year with 49 tackles, a sack, an interception, a fumble forced, a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry on the nation’s No. 1-ranked pass defense.

VOD: Les Miles downs a grass smoothie in new ESPN commercial
Earlier this month we showed you some pictures of Les Miles mixing grass in a smoothie for an upcoming ESPN commercial.
Well, that commercial is now out, and while Miles isn’t the main focus of the spot, he’s definitely the star.
The commercial is for the new College Football Playoff and features teams such as Ohio State, USC, LSU and… Tulane (yes, Tulane) as the programs that are “in” for the new brand of college football.
It’s a fun commercial that features the USC band practicing in a swimming pool, a guy painting the Iowa visitors’ locker room pink, Jerry Jones (sans his lady friends) declaring Arkansas the new national champions and, of course, Miles drinking a grass smoothie.
It’s also a good reminder that college football is just a couple short weeks away.

Auburn QB Nick Marshall apologetic in first public comments since marijuana citation
Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall is not shying away from his mistakes.
In his first public comments on Sunday, Marshall admitted his faults, apologized to Auburn and said he’s working hard to regain the trust of coaches, teammates and fans.
"It was tough because when that happened it was like the whole team was in that car with me, and also the coaching staff," Marshall said. "I felt bad about it but then again I came up here and I apologized and I told them it wouldn't happen again. They accepted me back with open hands.”
Marshall was cited for marijuana possession in July after he was stopped for a window tint violation and officers smelled marijuana in the car. They searched the car and found marijuana residue.
Marshall’s mother paid $1,100 in fines to clear her son.
The citation cost Marshall, who helped lead the Tigers to the BCS National Championship game last season, a trip to SEC media days and his starting spot for the season opener against Arkansas on Aug. 30.
It wasn’t the first time Marshall had been in trouble. The whole reason Marshall found himself at Auburn was because he was dismissed from Georgia after he and two teammates were caught stealing from another teammate.
Marshall has worked hard to get away from the stigma that Georgia incident caused, but knows the police citation was a step in the wrong direction.
"What happened in Georgia, that's in the past," Marshall said. "I'm not worried about that right now. I'm trying to gain my trust back from my team and my coaches and also the Auburn fans."

UCF names redshirt freshman Pete DiNovo starting quarterback
With Blake Bortles off to the NFL, Central Florida has big shoes to fill at quarterback, and head coach George O’Leary let us know who will fill those shoes.
Following Sunday’s practice, O’Leary said that Pete DiNovo has been named the Knights’ No. 1 quarterback, with sophomore Justin Holman and Boise State transfer Nick Patti just behind.
"I'm naming (DiNovo) the No. 1 quarterback going into the first game with Holman and Patti 2A and B and (Tyler) Harris three,” O’Leary said, per UCFSports.com. “I'm still undecided on two, but (DiNovo) from a management standpoint, from the sidelines to the field, had the consistency that I was looking for. I thought Pete elevated himself this past week."
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound DiNovo redshirted his first season on campus in 2013 and was named the team’s Scout Team Player of the Year for his contributions in practice. DiNovo, a three-star recruit out of Tarpon Springs, Fla., was a part of the same 2013 recruiting class with Holman, the team’s primary backup who appeared in three games last season. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the race came down to those two players, with DiNovo ultimately coming out on top of the depth chart moving forward.
“We ran a lot of evaluation. (DiNovo) just seemed to manage the team the best with the type of team we have. It's not a dead issue, but right now he's the No. 1 quarterback and he'll take the No. 1 reps,” O’Leary said.
O’Leary said DiNovo’s calmness under pressure and the way he managed the huddle was what separated him from the rest.
“He handles sideline to huddle, management huddle, the best of the four as far as I was concerned. That was really the deciding factor as far as what he does,” O’Leary said. “I think the defensive line put a lot of heat on the quarterbacks with people in their face more than they should have been. I think he reacted the best.”
Offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe said the decision is not “set in stone forever,” but if the season opener against Penn State in Ireland was tomorrow, DiNovo would be the starter.

USC linebacker Jabari Ruffin out for season with knee injury
A potential starter on USC’s defense went down with a season-ending injury during a weekend practice session.
USC confirmed that redshirt sophomore linebacker Jabari Ruffin, who was in contention to start at outside linebacker, tore a ligament in his knee during practice Sunday morning. The injury occurred after Ruffin intercepted a pass and was tackled during the interception return.
“This is very unfortunate news about Jabari, but I know he will rehab well and come back strong next year,” said head coach Steve Sarkisian. “And, I know our team will step up in his absence.”
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Ruffin appeared in 13 games for the Trojans in 2013, his redshirt freshman season. In total, he registered 22 tackles and recorded his first career sack against Utah. A native of Downey, Calif., Ruffin was the top-rated outside linebacker prospect in the 2012 class according to Rivals. Overall, he was rated four stars and the No. 40 prospect in the country.
According to USC’s website, senior J.R. Tavai and sophomores Scott Felix and Quinton Powell will look to fill the void at outside linebacker in Ruffin’s absence.
Ruffin is the second potential starter for USC to suffer a season-ending injury this offseason. Defensive lineman Kenny Bigelow went down with a torn ACL in July during a voluntary player workout.
The Trojans’ season opens up at home against Fresno State on August 30.
