N.C. State’s projected starter at middle linebacker, junior M.J. Salahuddin, suffered a knee injury in practice last week and could miss the whole season.
Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren said Sunday that the injury will require surgery, but would not comment on the severity of the injury. Per the Fayetteville Observer, Doeren did not say definitively that Salahuddin would not play in 2014, but he also pointed out that the junior still has his redshirt season available.
“Whether or not he’s out for the season, we’ll see,” Doeren said. “The silver lining for him is that he hasn’t used a redshirt. But I really hated to see this happen to M.J., like I do any player, but he is one of the better workers on the football team.”
Doeren said the injury occurred when Salahuddin was taking on a block during practice.
“It was really just a routine play. There was nothing crazy about it. He’s done it 1,000 times, a linebacker taking on a block. This time the knee didn’t react the same way. It was one of those things that sometimes you scratch your head about,” Doeren said.
The 6-foot-2, 231-pound Salahuddin started five games for the Wolfpack in 2013 and registered 25 tackles. He also appeared in 12 games on special teams as a true freshman in 2012.
Salahuddin, a native of Fayetteville, N.C., was a three-star recruit in the class of 2012.
Coming off a 3-9 season in 2013, Doeren’s squad opens the 2014 against Georgia Southern at home on August 30.
