BYU receiver Devon Blackmon said he was suspended for wearing earrings, an honor code violation

BYU transfer wide receiver Devon Blackmon tweeted Monday night that he will miss the Aug. 29 opener against UConn because of a rule violation.

Rules are rules.. Abide by them or suffer the consequences.... Looking forward to the Texas game

Blackmon’s offense? Well, it appears to be wearing earrings.

@drewjay yea, We have team standards, and there's consequences if you don't follow them, I shouldn't wear earrings But I'll bounce back..

While earrings might be commonplace among many football players around the country, it is an honor code violation for any man at BYU to wear them.

“A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained. Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, revealing, or form fitting. Shorts must be knee-length or longer. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extreme styles or colors, and trimmed above the collar, leaving the ear uncovered. Sideburns should not extend below the earlobe or onto the cheek. If worn, moustaches should be neatly trimmed and may not extend beyond or below the corners of the mouth. Men are expected to be clean-shaven; beards are not acceptable. Earrings and other body piercing are not acceptable. Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas.

Earlier this month, star running back Jamaal Williams was suspended after being arrested on suspicion of underage drinking, also an honor code violation. Like Blackmon, he’ll miss the UConn game, but expects to be back for the contest against Texas.

Also like Blackmon, Williams owned up to his mistake and made it publicly known. Coach Bronco Mendenhall has a policy of not discussing in-house disciplinary issues.

Blackmon seemed introspective about his suspension. While many players might have been furious about getting suspended for something as trivial as earrings, Blackmon acknowledges the rules at his school and seemed OK with the discipline.

I'm feeling so good right now.. like at peace for some reason...
