Eastern Illinois QB Jalen Whitlow's pooch punt went three yards (Video)

Facing a fourth-and-six from near midfield on the road early in the second half at Minnesota, Eastern Illinois head coach Kim Dameron sent out his offense, but opted for an attempted pooch punt by quarterback Jalen Whitlow.

The plan was for the Panthers to pin the Gophers deep in their own territory, but things did not go as planned.

Instead, Whitlow’s punt went three yards. For real. Three whole yards.

Whitlow transferred to Eastern Illinois this offseason after two seasons at Kentucky and his first game with the Panthers was a rough one. Minnesota won in a rout, 42-20, and Whitlow threw for 110 yards and one interception while splitting snaps with senior Andrew Manley. Whitlow also gained 77 yards on the ground on 19 carries.

Whitlow started 15 games in his two seasons at Kentucky, including seven as a true freshman in 2012. With the Wildcats, Whitlow threw for 1,834 yards and eight touchdowns while also running for 663 yards and nine scores on the ground.

Whitlow and the Panthers, an FCS squad from the Ohio Valley Conference that went 12-2 in 2013, will play its next game against Southern Illinois next Saturday.

Vanderbilt prints email to prove to referee that special jerseys are legal (Video)

Not deleting emails saved Vanderbilt from four timeouts on Thursday night against Temple.

The Commodores wore special jerseys with the words "Anchor Down" (the team slogan) on the back instead of the players names. The letters of the names were in black on the black jerseys and it was a slogan, which is prohibited by NCAA rules. Before the 2014 season, the NCAA instituted a rule that the numbers on players' jerseys must be a contrasting color from the jersey and just recently, South Florida's efforts to put "The Team" on the back of its jerseys was rebuffed.

The numbers on Vanderbilt's jerseys were gold. They were good to go. The contrasting color rule specifically mentions the numbers on a jersey and not the lettering.

There was some apparent confusion among referee Ken Williamson and his officiating crew and Vanderbilt was penalized a timeout in the first half for the slogan on the back. The penalty for not having contrasting numbers and/or a slogan is a loss of a timeout per quarter unless the team changes out of its uniforms.

(Last year, Arkansas State was penalized twice for having non-contrasting numbers on its jerseys against Auburn. The penalty was upped to timeouts in 2014.)

However, Vanderbilt knew the jerseys had been approved. (The letter re-enforcing the no-slogan rule was sent out August 6.) During the game, school officials got an email it had gotten when submitting the uniforms that said they were approved. After showing Williamson the email, Vanderbilt was awarded its timeout back.

Take note, all other college football programs, you can have lettering on the back of your jerseys that blends in. But you should keep any documentation proving their legality just in case.

No. 18 Ole Miss pulls away from Boise State

Bo Wallace threw four touchdowns passes in a sloppy season opener, and No. 18 Mississippi pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Boise State 35-13 on Thursday night. From College Football News : CBSSports.com - No. 18 Ole Miss pulls away from Boise State

Vandy's uniforms cause confusion for refs

Vanderbilt's new uniforms already are creating confusion -- and not just because the gray lettering on black jerseys is difficult to read. From ESPN.com - College Football - Vandy's uniforms cause confusion for refs

Ole Miss pulls away from Boise State late to win 35-13

Don't let the final score of Ole Miss' 35-13 win over Boise State fool you. It was not a convincing win, at least for the first three quarters.

Hell, those first three quarters – the first half, especially – were the perfect example of why college football should have a preseason. Mind you, we're not advocating for a preseason in college football. But anyone who is in favor of it and doesn't use the first two quarters of Thursday night's game isn't making the best argument possible.

In the first 30 minutes, Ole Miss QB Bo Wallace and Boise State QB Grant Hedrick combined for six interceptions. The teams combined for 13 penalties, including seven Ole Miss false start penalties. It was brutal.

Through three quarters, Ole Miss led 7-6. But finally in the fourth, the Rebels looked like the team that could be a sleeper in the SEC West as Wallace threw three fourth-quarter touchdowns in the span of three drives and three passes to pull away.

The third TD was a simple short pass to Cody Core that Boise's defenders just utterly whiffed on.

Can Ole Miss be that sleeper team? Well, based off Texas A&M's performance against South Carolina, finishing fourth in the SEC West is tougher than it looked 24 hours ago. But let's take A&M's game out of the equation and still pose the question. It's a yes, but it's certainly not unequivocal.

Entering Thursday, the prevailing thought was that the Rebels would go as far as Bo Wallace carried them in 2014. And that thought was proved true. As Wallace was throwing interceptions, Ole Miss looked like a team hardly capable of beating a Boise State team clearly not playing its best. When Wallace was throwing touchdowns, well, it was easy to bring A&M back into the picture and look ahead to October 11 when the two teams meet.

As for Boise State? Well, the Broncos were spoiled with Kellen Moore. Hedrick finished with four interceptions and simply didn't look comfortable all night, though it didn't help that he could smell Robert Nkemdiche's pregame meal wafting from his breath for most of the first half. The five-star recruit was constantly in what was supposed to be the pocket for Hedrick.

All isn't lost for Boise State, however. Winning the Mountain West may be enough for a New Year's bowl bid in one of the College Football Playoff bowls. But to do that, Hedrick will have to play much better.

Eastern Illinois player ejected after hitting Minnesota lineman in a sensitive area (Video)

When you play for Eastern Illinois, unless you make some sort of amazing highlight play, you’re probably not going to get a whole lot of publicity – especially when your team is getting trounced on the road at Minnesota.

This is an exception.

Facing a big second half deficit, EIU junior linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill was apparently not too thrilled with the play of Minnesota senior guard Zac Epping, so he gave him a little nudge in a place where no man wants to be hit.

Grugier-Hill was promptly ejected by the officials, and rightly so. Usually that kind of cheap shot comes with some sort of subtlety, but not in this instance.

Even though a starting lineman had a sore groin, Minnesota went on to win the game, 42-14.

Paul Finebaum broke the SEC Network halftime set (Video)

SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum predicted before Texas A&M's win over South Carolina that A&M QB Kenny Hill would have a hard time adjusting in his first SEC game.

Hill did not, setting A&M's single-game passing record in the Aggies 52-28 blowout win. Perhaps Finebaum took out the frustration of his missed prediction on the SEC Network's halftime set.

(GIF via MockSession.com)

After Finebaum's mishap, it was clear that the tabletop of the SEC Network set is in four pieces for easy setup, removal and transport. And we'll call the unsecure section a product of a new network. There are bound to be some things go wrong in the first actual game broadcast, and if that was the only thing that went wrong at Williams-Brice (outside of South Carolina's performance), it's a good telecast.

Watch Tim Tebow's hilarious impression of Steve Spurrier (Video)

Now that Tim Tebow is working as an analyst for the SEC Network, we’ll get to see a lot of the former Florida quarterback in our lives.

So far, he’s been a natural on camera, and in the pregame coverage of Thursday night’s game between Texas A&M and South Carolina, Tebow blessed his loyal viewing audience with an impression of Gamecocks’ head coach Steve Spurrier.

It’s amazing.

Tebow’s impression was prompted by a candid pregame chat between Spurrier and A&M coach Kevin Sumlin on the field while the teams warmed up. Tebow was recruited by Spurrier, so he is certainly familiar with his small talk.

We’ll be waiting anxiously for Spurrier’s response – a response that hopefully includes his own impression of the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback.

Former Michigan lineman Elliott Mealer does a great Brady Hoke impression (Video)

Former Michigan offensive lineman Elliott Mealer played in 26 games in two seasons for Brady Hoke after Hoke was hired away from San Diego State in 2011. Mealer was a backup for Hoke in 2011, but was inserted into the starting lineup at center for his fifth-year senior season under Hoke, so it’s safe to say he knows his former head coach pretty well.

I think this video that Mealer posted onto his Instagram account gives further evidence of that,

That is an extremely accurate impression. For reference, here’s a clip from a recent Hoke press conference.

Pretty well-executed, right? I think so.

Mealer, who currently plays for the San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League, had a brief stint with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He was also featured in an episode of ESPN’s E:60, which chronicled a tragic car accident that resulted in the death of his father and girlfriend and the paralysis of his brother.

Ole Miss LB Serderius Bryant got ejected for targeting (GIF)

Ole Miss LB Serderius Bryant was ejected for targeting in the first quarter of the Rebels' game against Ole Miss Thursday night.

It was not a borderline hit, either. While Bryant protested the call, he lowered the crown of his helmet into Boise State QB Grant Hedrick's helmet.

The call was upheld after review. Had it been overturned, not only would Bryant have been able to stay in the game, but the 15-yard penalty for the foul would have been removed as well. Last year, the first season of the targeting rule, if a foul was overturned, the ejection went away but the yardage was still applied to the foul.

Bryant's post-foul absence is a costly one as well. He led Ole Miss with 78 tackles last season.

Bryant's ejection is not the first this year in college football. Georgia State's Tarris Batiste was ejected for targeting in the third quarter of the Panthers' game against Abilene Christian Wednesday night.

Fifth Notre Dame player, safety Eilar Hardy, to be held out amid academic investigation

Two weeks after Notre Dame announced that four players would be held out of practice and competition amid an internal investigation into suspected academic fraud, the school released a statement Thursday that said a fifth player would also be held out.

The school did not name the player in the statement, but a spokesman subsequently confirmed that senior safety Eilar Hardy will not participate with the team as the investigation continues.

“As Notre Dame’s internal investigation relating to potential NCAA violations reaches its conclusion, a decision has been made to hold a fifth football player out from practice and competition,” the statement read. “As with all cases of suspected academic dishonesty, the matter will now be subject to the University’s honor code process.”

Hardy started two games at safety, but mainly played as a reserve in 10 total games for the Fighting Irish in 2013. He recorded 26 tackles and one tackle for loss. According to Irish Illustrated, Hardy was not listed on the team’s two-deep depth chart at safety.

The school confirmed on August 15 that KeiVarae Russell, DaVaris Daniels, Kendall Moore and Ishaq Williams would be held out of practice while the investigation took place. Head coach Brian Kelly had previously ruled those four players out for Saturday’s season opener against Rice.

When Notre Dame originally announced the investigation, it said that there is “evidence that students had submitted papers and homework that had been written for them by others.” The school notified the NCAA of the situation on the same day.

UNC defensive tackle Ethan Farmer cleared to play

A day after North Carolina suspended four defensive players for violating team rules amid hazing allegations, the Tar Heels received good news about the eligibility of a defensive starter.

After his eligibility was in question due to “an academic question,” senior defensive tackle Ethan Farmer was officially cleared on Thursday to play in the team’s season opener against Liberty on Saturday.

“We are thankful to have Ethan cleared to play and I know he’s excited to have this behind him,” head coach Larry Fedora said. “Ethan is our only experienced player and we’ll be counting on him for senior leadership in that group. He has practiced hard during the preseason and has not let this situation affect his preparation for the season.”

The 6-foot-3, 295 pound Farmer is the only returning starter for UNC along the defensive line, and according to Tar Heel Illustrated, the team was “completely in the dark” about Farmer’s status “until not long ago.”

Farmer will be a big boost for the Tar Heels’ defense, but with the coaching staff unsure if Farmer would be able to suit up, Tar Heel Illustrated described his repetitions in practice as “somewhat limited” while others prepared for potentially filling in for Farmer.

Farmer, a native of Tabor City, N.C., started all 13 games for the Tar Heels in 2013. He registered 30 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Farmer was a three-star recruit for the Tar Heels’ 2010 class.

Former USC QB Matt Leinart to join Pac-12 Networks

A familiar face will join the Pac-12 Networks as a studio analyst for the 2014 season.

It was announced Thursday that former USC Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Matt Leinart has joined Pac-12 Networks and will make his debut on Saturday, August 30. Leinart, who suited up for the Trojans from 2001 to 2005 under head coach Pete Carroll, will join the panel for pregame, halftime and postgame coverage.

According to a release, Leinart, who recently retired from the NFL after eight seasons with four different teams, will also appear on “Pac-12 Football Weekly” and “will be featured in the Networks’ bowl game and spring football coverage” moving forward.

Leinart was a three-year starter for the Trojans from 2003 to 2005. In those three seasons, Leinart tallied 10,693 passing yards for 99 touchdowns and 23 interceptions and led USC to a 37-2 record and two BCS National Championship appearances, winning in 2004.

Following his standout college career, Leinart was selected tenth overall in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He played for the Cardinals for four seasons before stints with the Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders and Buffalo Bills.

Leinart certainly knows the Pac-12 well, so this seems like a natural fit.

Alabama OC Lane Kiffin will coach against West Virginia from the sidelines

Coordinators on the sidelines aren't an endangered species. They're just not very common. Most coordinators sit upstairs in the coaching box to get a good look at how plays develop and the formation habits of the opposing team.

Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin isn't going upstairs. He's going to be on the sidelines for the Crimson Tide's game against West Virginia.

"We're going to put him on the field," Alabama coach Nick Saban said Wednesday.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart coaches from teh sidelines too. But previous Tide offensive coordinators have been upstairs. When Kiffin was head coach at USC, he called the plays. He was obviously on the sideline while doing so,

"I always let the coordinators be where they want to be," Saban said. "But in this case, even though he felt more comfortable being in the press box, I think it's important that he's on the field. He has the greatest impact and effect on players."

Kiffin's presence on the sideline will also allow him to interact face-to-face with both Blake Sims and Jacob Coker. Saban has said both quarterbacks would play against the Mountaineers, and being up close could give Kiffin a better perception of how each player is handling the game.

Given the criticism Kiffin has garnered throughout his coaching career, you can bet that he'll become the target (fairly or not) for blame if Alabama's offense starts slowly in 2014. And if Alabama's instantly successful with Sims and/or Coker, well, the amount of praise probably won't be equal to the criticism if the situation was reversed.

What to Watch, Week 1: Welcome back college football, we missed you

Let's do this thing, yo!

It’s been a long eight or so months, but the new season is here and with it a new way to crown a champion. College football will forever be changed when the season kicks off with the game between Texas A&M and South Carolina at 6 p.m. ET (OK, technically it kicked off Wednesday with Georgia State's thrilling 38-37 win against Abilene Christian), the first of many contests that will ultimately parse out the top four teams and create the first-ever College Football Playoff.

But before we start looking ahead, it’s important to remember how we got here. So, here’s your 2013 refresher:

This guy won the Heisman, but created a lot of off-field drama while doing it (and after doing it). His team also won the national title and many people think it can do it again.

Even though the SEC’s streak of national championship ended, it did have two of the most miraculous plays in college football history courtesy of national championship runner-up Auburn.

Sorry Georgia.

Sorry Alabama. And by the way, this play made Chris Davis a rockstar for pretty much the rest of his life.

This trophy is now gone

Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde & Graham Watson discuss who will emerge victorious when Auburn & Florida State collide for the BCS National Championship game

And we've replaced it with this

The wait is over. We've seen the College Football Playoff Trophy for the first time. Campus Insiders' Ray Crawford, Doug Chapman and Pete Fiutak give you instant reaction to the trophy every player will strive for.

And, sadly, this guy has moved on to the NFL.

Former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel (TMZ)

I think that’s everything, so let’s look ahead to this week.

Game of the week:

No. 16 Clemson vs. No. 12 Georgia, 5:30 p.m. ET

This was Dr. Saturday’s game of the week to open last year and it didn’t disappoint. We’re expect similar greatness in 2014. Both of these coaches have downplayed the importance of this game, but the winner will have the inside track to the new four-team playoff. Both of these teams will introduce veterans at quarterback in Cole Stoudt and Hutson Mason, but neither guy has a lot of experience. Both teams also have been dealing with some major injuries, which could play a role as well. Clemson needs this game more than Georgia simply because the rest of its schedule isn’t as strong, but it’s going to be tough for the Tigers to go between the hedges and come out with a win. This is going to be an entertaining game, but Georgia should come away victorious.

Game to watch:

No. 14 Wisconsin vs. No. 13 LSU, 9 p.m. ET

This game has to be the most anticipated of the opening weekend simply because of the gameplay between the two coaches. Neither team has named a starting quarterback, though the popular opinion is that Wisconsin will start former safety Tanner McEvoy. What we hope McEvoy brings to this game is that dual-threat ability that will keep LSU from stacking the box to stop running back Melvin Gordon. Some pistol offense could keep LSU off balance and make this a tighter game than many expect. Of course, it’s always difficult to win in Death Valley and LSU coach Les Miles has been quietly confident about the prospects of his team this year. LSU should win this game, but if Wisconsin pulls off the upset, it could go undefeated with its favorable schedule.

Also check out…

No. 21 Texas A&M vs. No. 9 South Carolina, Thurs., 6 p.m. ET

There are a couple reasons to tune into this game. Of course there’s the “Life Beyond Johnny Football” storyline, but for me, I want to see if South Carolina is the real deal. If the Gamecocks are really a national title contender, which many think they are, they should blow A&M out of the water. The A&M defense was abysmal last season and it doesn’t have Johnny Manziel to bail it out this year. South Carolina quarterback Dylan Thompson might be a new starter, but he’s veteran player and with Mike Davis healthy in the backfield, they should be able to pick apart the Aggie defense. On the flip side, A&M quarterback Kenny Hill has created a lot of intrigue, especially since coach Kevin Sumlin has shown that he knows how to pick his QBs, but with six players returning from a defense that was one of the best in the country last year, Hill might have a tough welcome to college football.

Don't waste your time with:

No. 1 Florida State vs. Oklahoma State (Arlington, Texas), 8 p.m. ET

I know everyone is excited to see Jameis Winston and the defending national champion, but I have a tough time seeing this game be competitive. Oklahoma State returns just four players from a defense that allowed 242.5 passing yards per game last year. Florida State is going to be motivated to show that it’s ready to defend its national championship and perhaps even its Heisman Trophy. While this game might be close early, I think Florida State runs away with it.

Keep an eye on:

J.T. Barrett, QB, Ohio State

No quarterback has been talked about more this week than Ohio State redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett, who steps in as starter for the injured Braxton Miller. While many don’t believe Navy will give Ohio State much of a game, I do think this is a going to be a good test to see whether Barrett is ready to lead what many thought was a playoff-possible team this season. There are going to be some ups and downs, but how Barrett and Ohio State weather them will be telling. On the flipside, this also will be a good chance to see Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds, a true dual-threat that gives Navy a legit passing threat, something that had been lacking in the offense before he came along. Reynolds has been heralded as a darkhorse for the Heisman, but he’ll have to have a good game against the Buckeyes to make that dream a reality.

Upset alert:

Utah State (+6) at Tennessee, Sun., 7 p.m. ET

There’s no team in the country that will have more new players on the field than Tennessee and playing against a Utah State team that many believe will win the Mountain West is going to be a challenge, even at home. USU veteran quarterback Chuckie Keaton is back after missing last season with a knee injury and while the Aggies don’t have a lot of starters returning, they do have a lot of players with playing experience. Tennessee is green in so many positions and its quarterback is iffy. This game could be close and Tennessee definitely has a bit of an edge because it’s at home, but Utah State will keep this under the number and possibly even leave with a win.

Spread Options: Dr. Saturday's Week 1 picks against the spread

Spread Options is back and we're setting the bar higher than last season.

Thanks to a 4-6 final week, we finished the season at 75-65-2. Ten games over .500 is doable, but not great. However, I think it gives us license call ourselves betting experts, right? We're going with it. We are betting experts now.

Let's see what Week One looks like.

Texas A&M at South Carolina (-10.5), 6:15 ET (Thursday): We're so convinced about this game that it's starting to worry us. South Carolina QB Dylan Thompson has starting experience. Texas A&M QB Kenny Hill doesn't. Williams-Brice Stadium is going to be rocking. Last year, South Carolina was 3-2 at home ATS when there was a double-digit line. One of those games was North Carolina last year. It's a two-touchdown win for the Gamecocks.

Boise State (+11) vs. Ole Miss, 8 p.m. ET (Thursday): This isn't Chris Petersen's Boise State. And it isn't even Chris Petersen's great Boise State. But the Broncos are the class of the Mountain West Conference and need this game to have any chance of sniffing the College Football Playoff. Ole Miss is also this year's trendy non-Alabama/Auburn/LSU pick in the SEC West. While the Rebels could live up to that billing, a double-digit cover on a neutral site doesn't seem likely.

Rutgers at Washington State (-8), 10 p.m. ET (Thursday): Rutgers has a beat up defensive secondary. Rutgers also has Gary Nova. While the presence of Ralph Friedgen as the Scarlet Knights' offensive coordinator may make Nova a better quarterback, do you want to take Nova in a shootout against Mike Leach's offense in the first game of the season?

Ohio State vs. Navy (+16.5), Noon ET: The J.T. Barrett era is going to begin with a win for Ohio State. And it very well could be a convincing win. But the best quarterback on the field is going to be Navy's Keenan Reynolds, who had 31 rushing touchdowns last year. Navy controls the ball and controls the clock relatively well, preventing Ohio State from stretching the lead.

Cal at Northwestern (-11), 3:30 p.m. ET: Northwestern faltered significantly down the stretch last season, but Cal went 1-11 and challenged Purdue for the title of "worst Power Five team in 2013." Each team returns nine starters on offense and Northwestern won last year's game by 14 at Cal. It's setting up to be a repeat in 2014.

North Texas (+25.5) at Texas, 8 p.m. ET: There's some Texas optimism built into this line. The Mean Green were a bowl team in 2013 and played Georgia tough before ultimately losing by 24. Yes, North Texas only has nine returning starters (total), but Texas isn't as good as Georgia was and the Charlie Strong bump may not be immediate.

Florida State (-18) vs. Oklahoma State, 8 p.m. ET: The (Oklahoma State) Cowboys are back in AT&T Stadium for the second time in eight months, which means they've played more meaningful games there in that timeframe than the Dallas Cowboys have. Florida State and Jameis Winston is out to prove that it's once again the best team in college football and a beatdown of a Big 12 team will help prove just that.

Wisconsin vs. LSU (-5), 9 p.m. ET: Les Miles doesn't lose nonconference games to Power Five opponents. He's not going to on Saturday. If this line was at 7, Wisconsin is tempting. However, the Tigers are the better team and will wear down the Badgers as the game goes on. This is going to be close, but it's not going to go in Wisconsin's favor.

Utah State (+6) vs. Tennessee, 7 p.m. ET (Sunday): Upset special of the week. We're on the Chuckie Keeton bandwagon. Utah State wins this straight up. The Aggie offense lost a ton of talent, but we're going to go with the best player on the field, especially given Tennessee's QB problems last year.

Miami at Louisville (-3.5), 8 p.m. ET (Monday): The return of Bobby Petrino starts off wonderfully for Louisville fans. Miami is starting a true freshman at QB and has RB Duke Johnson off a severe ankle injury that he suffered against Florida State last year. Yes, there's no Teddy Bridgewater, but Will Gardner will do just fine.

Dish reaches agreement with Fox Sports 1 to carry college football games

If you have Dish, you're not going to miss any college football this weekend.

The satellite company announced it will carry all four of Fox Sports 1's football games for college football's opening weekend. The games were in danger for Dish customers after the two parties were in a disagreement about the cost to carry the games.

“We are proud to deliver the most college football anywhere, at the best possible value," Dish vice president of programming Josh Clark said in a statement.

Fox Sports 1's first game of the weekend is Thursday night between Rutgers and Washington State. Games between Colorado State and Colorado (Friday), North Dakota State and Iowa State (Saturday) and SMU and Baylor (Sunday) are also on the network. Dish said customers' guides should have updated with the new information overnight.

The carriage dispute was only between FS1 and Dish. No other carriers were involved.

Fox Sports 1 recently celebrated its first anniversary on August 17. The network was rebranded from the Speed Channel and will carry a number of Big 12 and Pac-12 football games this year.

Navy shows off white uniforms for Saturday's game against Ohio State (Photos)

Navy will have special uniforms for its game against Ohio State in Baltimore on Saturday.

The Midshipmen will be wearing their "Navy Summer Whites." Each uniform is going to be custom to the player, "with each athlete wearing their specific rank on the field, depicted in the shoulder and pant leg design of each uniform" per the release from Under Armour.

Navy's helmets will also be mostly white, much like the special helmets its worn in the past.

For comparison's sake, here's what the traditional Navy away uniform will look like this year.

These are great looking uniforms. The matte white Navy helmet has been one of the best in college football and it's good to see it return. If Navy upsets Ohio State, these uniforms may become a mainstay this season.

College football student attendance down about 7 percent per report

We've written about how college football programs are trying combat declining student attendance with promotions like free tickets, advanced wireless connections and giveaways, but there hasn't been an indication of just how much attendance has declined in recent years.

A report in the Wall Street Journal has tried to put a number to the trend.

Through Freedom of Information Act requests, the WSJ analyzed student ticket data from 80 colleges, including 38 schools from Power Five conferences. Based on that information, the Journal says the average student attendance at games is down 7.1 percent since 2009.

From the WSJ:

Average student attendance at college football games is down 7.1% since 2009, according to an analysis by The Wall Street Journal of stadium turnstile records from about 50 public colleges with top-division football teams. The decline was 5.6% at colleges in the five richest conferences.

The decrease even at schools with entrenched football traditions and national championships stands in contrast to college football's overall popularity. Total turnout at home games of top-tier teams hit a record in 2013, while average attendance has slipped just 0.8% since 2009.

The reasons for the decline? Television and, well, performance. Alabama's football attendance has increased in the time period. UCLA's has too. Florida and Colorado's attendance has declined. Look at the records of those schools.

According to the WSJ, 74 percent of student tickets at Kansas were unused last year. (Student combo tickets at Kansas include both football and basketball.)

Michigan's ticket plan is also cited in the report. The Wolverines raised the price of student tickets from $205 to $295 last year and made the student section general admission instead of based off class year. According to a survey, 76 percent of students disapproved of the change.

"There are students who are being priced out," says Michael Proppe, Michigan's student-body president last year, told the WSJ. "People are looking to trim costs, and for a lot of folks, football is an easy thing to cut. It's not essential to going to college."

We're biased; we think it is essential. However, a good gameday experience is also essential. It's why schools are actively combating the allure of bars with high-definition televisions.

Maryland selling 1.5 pound pretzel at football games this year (Photo)

Have you ever gone to a sporting event and thought the soft pretzels at the concession stands weren't big enough? Here's Maryland's new 1.5 pound pretzel.

The Terrapins will sell "The Chessie" at all home football games this year. It's 24 ounces of a pretzel baked with crab dip and cheese. It will sell for $17.50 according to the Washington Post.

New this season at Byrd Stadium: a melted-cheese-and-crab soft pretzel that weighs 1.5 pounds http://t.co/Jt7uFvMiw8 http://ift.tt/1AXoOub

— Dan Steinberg (@dcsportsbog) August 27, 2014

The official description of the pretzel:

The ‘Chessie,’ named after the Loch Ness Monster’s less famous Chesapeake Bay cousin, is a monster-sized 24-ounce hot soft pretzel smothered in back fin crab dip and melted cheddar cheese, then topped with a dusting of Old Bay for two to four hungry fans.

I'm all for trying this monstrosity, but I would share it with Graham and Sam. Three seems to be the sharing sweet spot. Two to four people is a pretty wide margin, but it totally wards off the feeling of gluttony if you split it with just one person. If you choose to be selfish and eat the pretzel yourself, you probably deserve the guilt that comes with eating it all as well as the stomachache that's sure to follow.
