Louisville QB Will Gardner might not be available for Wake Forest game
Louisville quarterback Will Gardner is questionable for Saturday’s game against Wake Forest after suffering a knee injury during the third quarter of last week’s win against Florida International.
FIU linebacker Treyvon Williams hit Garner below his left knee, which caused Gardner’s knee to buckle. Gardner was able to walk off the field under his own power, but he was not able to return. Senior Brett Nelson, who is usually the third-string quarterback, finished the game since backup Reggie Bonnafon was attending the funeral services of his father, who died earlier in the week.
On Monday, coach Bobby Petrino said he wasn’t sure whether Gardner would be able to play against Wake Forest and that he was still sore from the hit. On Tuesday, the school released a statement that continued to keep Gardner’s status undetermined.
"Will Gardner continues to undergo evaluation and treatment on his lower extremity injury. We will monitor his symptoms and progression from treatments on a daily basis and see how he responds throughout the week."
Gardner has already undergone surgery on both knees in the past and wears a brace on his left knee.
If Garner can’t go, Bonnafon, a freshman who has already played this season, would likely play in his stead.

Central Michigan RB Thomas Rawls agrees to plea deal, placed back on active roster
A week after being suspended indefinitely following an arrest, top Central Michigan running back Thomas Rawls was placed back onto the active roster Tuesday a few hours after he reached a plea deal.
Rawls was suspended prior to CMU’s home game against Syracuse following his Sept. 14 arrest for an April incident where he and two others stole a purse from a Michigan casino. Initially, per the Mount Pleasant Morning Sun, Rawls was charged with three felonies stemming from the incident. Tuesday, Rawls reached an agreement to “enter a guilty plea to one count of attempted larceny in a building,” a misdemeanor.
Additionally, the judge “allowed an exception for ‘travel related to team activities,’” which allows Rawls to travel with the team. As part of the agreement, Rawls agreed to testify against “any co-defendants in the case.”
The incident in question reportedly took place April 8. Police say Rawls and another man “conspired to steal a purse left on a table in a sub sandwich shop inside the casino.”
Rawls, who transferred to CMU from Michigan, said he did not take the contents of the purse, but he did admit that he assisted his friend “in doing it.”
Though the program reinstated him, it is not known if he will play Saturday in the Chippewas’ MAC opener at Toledo.
The offense has struggled without Rawls in losses to Syracuse and Kansas. In the two games with Rawls – wins over Chattanooga and Purdue – Rawls ran for 276 yards and three touchdowns on 56 carries.

Former Michigan QB Michael Taylor not happy with state of Wolverines
Former Michigan QB Michael Taylor didn't hold back on the radio in Detroit on Tuesday.
Taylor, who played QB for Michigan from 1986-1989 and won conference championships in his final two seasons, was on WMGC-FM and talked about everything from Michigan's coaching situation to the "miscommunication" that resulted in a promotion on Michigan's campus that gave away tickets to Saturday's game against Minnesota with the purchase of two Coca-Cola products.
Michigan is 2-2 after being shut out to Notre Dame on the road and losing to Utah at home.
"Sad. It's very, very embarrassing," Taylor said when the promotion was brought up via the Detroit Free-Press. I would never have thought, in my lifetime, that you couldn't give away Michigan tickets because folks wouldn't buy them. That is due to the leadership going on in the athletic department. ... As a former player, we're not treated any better. They try to come in and treat us like glorified fans years ago and now can't get guys to come back. Now there's so many gimmicks that you see and now they want us to come because they're having trouble filling up the stadium. That's a sad state of affairs, in my opinion."
A picture of the sign was tweeted by a member of Michigan's student paper. Monday night, the school's athletic department issued a statement that said the sign was erroneous because of a miscommunication surrounding the promotion's approval process.
(You can read the full text of Taylor's comments here. If you're a Michigan fan, you'll especially want to read them all. Taylor also calls Michigan a "propaganda" football team.)
Taylor said that when he was at Michigan he wanted to be an engineer but was steered towards the business school. In 2007, former Michigan QB and now San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh made similar comments, noting that the school steered players towards easier degrees.
Since the retirement of Lloyd Carr after the 2007 season, Michigan has hired two coaches, Rich Rodriguez and current coach Brady Hoke. Harbaugh and LSU coach Les Miles have been mentioned in connection with the openings because of their Michigan ties. Taylor said that neither Harbaugh or Miles were considered "because of too many other guys who had direct links to making sure they didn't get an offer and a job here."
He also said Harbaugh should have been hired as the team's coach in 2011.
"We didn't get the coach who should have been our coach here (Harbaugh) because we insulted him in the first place. So then look who we get. It's nothing personal; Brady's a nice guy, I'm sure all you guys agree. I'll agree to that. Really nice guy, very personable guy. However, his pedigree did not deserve to be a $4-million coach here at Michigan."
The man who hired Hoke? Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon. Taylor saved his most scathing comments for Brandon when asked about Hoke's job status potentially changing after the season.
"After the season? I'll put it this way. Didn't Dave Brandon come out and say he'd judge Rich Rodriguez on red-letter football games? ... If you judge Brady Hoke on red-letter football games, where do we stand? That's all I'm saying, is that the treatment given to Rich Rodriguez should be given to Brady Hoke. He preached toughness, he preached the downhill running game, the Michigan defense. The proof is in the pudding. And 12 games, 4-8, mediocre completion, it is what it is. I'm not here to say whether the man is going to be fired; I don't make that call. All I do know is Dave Brandon should not be let to make another decision at Michigan. Period."

Clemson center Ryan Norton received threats on social media after bad snap vs. FSU
There were a number of plays that contributed to Clemson’s loss to top-ranked Florida State over the weekend, but one that has been singled out is the errant snap from Tigers’ center Ryan Norton.
Late in the third quarter with the game tied at 10, the Tigers were facing a second-and-goal from FSU’s 1-yard line when Norton snapped the ball over quarterback Deshaun Watson’s head. The ball bounced all the way to the 24-yard line for a loss of 23 yards and struggling kicker Ammon Lakip missed a 40-yard field goal attempt two plays later.
(You can view the play at the 1:50 mark of the video above)
In the hours after the devastating overtime loss, some upset Clemson fans took things way overboard by threatening Norton on social media.
Things got so out of hand, that Norton felt the need to delete his account just to avoid the abuse from his own fans.
Via ESPN.com:
"Coach [Chad] Morris told me [about the threats] last night," Swinney told reporters. “That's disappointing. I think he deleted his account. It's a shame that young people have to deal with that kind of stuff. Nobody wants to make a bad snap. I think most of it was people mad and venting, but it was threatening to Ryan is what I was told. Those aren't fans -- those are people with issues."
I don’t think I need to explain how absurd it is that people would threaten a college kid over a play from a football game. When you reach that point, it might be time to reevaluate your own life.
Not a good look, Clemson fans.

Decisions involving Notre Dame players in academic fraud investigation expected soon
It has been over a month since Notre Dame announced it would be launching an internal investigation into suspected academic fraud involving five football players. The future of those five players – KeiVarae Russell, DaVaris Daniels, Ishaq Williams, Kendall Moore and Eilar Hardy – could be decided relatively soon.
Head coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday, according to IrishIllustrated.com, that hearings on the matter could conclude “by the end of next week.”
“Friday of last week, I was informed that the academic committee has been formed officially, and that they will – if all things move in the manner that they’re hoping and that they’re able to get through all the information – get their hearings concluded by the end of next week,” said Kelly at his Tuesday press conference.
The five players have not practiced with the team since mid-August when it was discovered that there was evidence others had written papers and completed homework assignments for them. The players have been held out of all three games so far this season too and will also be held out Saturday against Syracuse.
Kelly said he has been in conversations with Notre Dame officials, including vice president and director of athletics Jack Swarbrick, throughout the process, but would not offer any specific updates. He did say, however, that conversations about improving the way similar situations would be handled in the future have taken place.
“These are dialogues that Jack and I are having not after the season; we’re having them as they occur,” Kelly said. “There are clearly ways that we believe, internally, that we need to get better. We don’t wait until January to have those conversations. We’re having them right now.”
Kelly said he was not sure if the NCAA would get involved or potentially vacate wins from past seasons.
“I do not have any knowledge of vacating wins or NCAA implications. I have not been informed of that, and whether that is impending, I think I would have been informed of all those things if we were in that kind of immediacy,” Kelly said.
“What I do know is that a committee of this fashion has not, in my understanding, been set up before. It’s a very complicated situation. There are a lot of pieces. We’re probably going down a path that (Notre Dame) has never gone (down) before.”
Notre Dame president John Jenkins said last week that the investigation involves a student who “served for a brief time as a paid student employee of the athletic department.” Jenkins added that he did not think any members of the athletic department’s full-time staff had any involvement.
Three of the five players involved – Daniels, Russell and Williams – were listed as starters on the Irish’s depth chart during preseason camp. Moore and Hardy were reserves.
Daniels, a wide receiver, caught 49 passes for 745 yards and five touchdowns in 2013. Russell, a defensive back, registered 51 tackles and had one interception in 2013, while Williams, a defensive lineman, had 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks last season.
Moore is a backup linebacker who played in all 13 games and had 17 tackles and one interception. Hardy was not listed on the team’s 2014 two-deep depth chart, but he started two games in 2013 and recorded 26 tackles.

SMU will likely start a fourth-string walk-on at quarterback vs. TCU
SMU has been outscored 146-6 in its first three games, all losses. In the process, four quarterbacks have seen action for the Mustangs and after the dust settled from Saturday’s 58-6 loss to No. 6 Texas A&M, a walk-on emerged as the best option for the team moving forward.
Interim coach Tom Mason, who is filling in for June Jones, who resigned on Sept. 8, said Tuesday that junior Garrett Krstich will likely start Saturday against TCU. Krstich, a walk-on who started the season fourth on the depth chart, came on in relief of Kolney Cassel against A&M and completed 13-of-24 passes for 137 yards.
“I don’t care if he’s a walk-on,” Mason said, per the Dallas Morning-News. “I don’t care if (Krstich) was fourth string going into fall camp. To me, quarterback is like any other position. You play the guy that’s playing the best right now. Right now, he’s playing the best.”
Sophomore Neal Burcham won the starting role coming out of preseason camp, but he went down with a season-ending elbow injury against North Texas. Cassel played most of the North Texas game after Burcham went down, but was ineffective in the first half against the Aggies. Sophomore Matt Davis has also seen snaps.
“Right now, it’s probably going to be Krstich then Cassel then Davis,” Mason said of the QB depth chart. “I hate revolving quarterbacks. We’ve got to get this thing settled down where we’re playing one or two guys, but the kids are rallying around Krstich, and that’s important because that tells you who the kids want right now.”
Before being brought into the game against A&M, the 6-foot-3, 199-pound Krstich played in just one other game in his career – last season when he completed a pass for 13 yards and threw an interception against UCF.
He’ll face a tough task against TCU Saturday and things won’t get any easier after that. The Mustangs will play No. 23 East Carolina on the road in the following week.

Kennedy Estelle becomes ninth player dismissed by Charlie Strong at Texas
Kennedy Estelle was dismissed by Texas Tuesday for a violation of team rules, becoming the ninth Longhorns player to get the boot under head coach Charlie Strong.
#Longhorns #HookEm squad has dismissed OT Kennedy Estelle from the team for violating team rules. Another one bites the dust
— Anwar Richardson (@AnwarRichardson) September 23, 2014
Estelle, a former starter at tackle, hasn’t seen the field since he was suspended in the days following the Longhorns’ season opener against North Texas. Estelle was suspended along with senior Desmond Harrison, the team’s other projected starter at tackle. Strong said Monday that he expected both to return to practice this week, but something must have changed in Estelle’s case.
Daje Johnson has been practicing. Strong says he expects tackles Kennedy Estelle and Dez Harrison to practice this week.
— Mike Finger (@mikefinger) September 22, 2014
In parts of three seasons with the program, the 6-foot-7, 290-pound junior saw action in 16 games. Of those 16 games, he started nine at right tackle.
Estelle started his sophomore season as a reserve, but he came on and started eight games after Josh Cochran went down with an injury. Additionally, Estelle made appearances in three games as a true freshman in 2012.
Estelle was a four-star recruit in the 2012 class and was rated as the No. 67 overall prospect in the nation by Rivals.com.
In addition to Estelle, under Strong, senior fullback Chet Moss, senior safety Leroy Scott, senior running back Joe Bergeron, redshirt freshman safety Chevoski Collins, sophomore running back Jalen Overstreet, redshirt freshman wideout Montrel Meander, junior wideout Kendall Sanders and redshirt freshman linebacker Deoundrei Davis have all been dismissed.
The 1-2 Longhorns play Kansas on the road Saturday afternoon in its Big 12 opener.

David Cornwell tweets Jameis Winston will cooperate with FSU's Title IX investigation
David Cornwell, a lawyer advising Florida State QB Jameis Winston's family, tweeted Monday morning that he was going to tell Florida State that Winston would cooperate with the school's Title IX investigation.
The school is investigating Winston after the allegations of sexual assault against him in December 2012 by a woman who was a student at Florida State at the time. By Title IX rule, the school is required to investigate all cases of alleged sexual assault.
Today, wIll advise FSU that JW will cooperate with Title 9 investigation. Looks forward to clearing his name.
— David Cornwell (@wmdavidcornwell) September 23, 2014
The investigation had previously been suspended. In April, the Department of Education opened an investigation into Florida State's handling of the case to see if the school had violated Title IX protocol. Winston had reportedly been questioned in January where he declined to offer much, if any, information.
Florida State has consistently declined comment on the Title IX investigation citing privacy reasons. Earlier in September a lawyer for the accuser said he expected the university to bring conduct charges against Winston. The lawyer said the accuser was interviewed by the school in August.
Winston was not charged with sexual assault by Florida state attorney Willie Meggs after Meggs cited a lack of evidence in the case. The incident became public in November 2013 after an 11-month delay in the case.
Winston's Florida State teammates Ronald Darby and Chris Casher were present in the apartment when the incident occurred. Both signed affadavits saying they believed the sex between Winston and the accuser to be consensual. Both Darby and Casher faced conduct charges for violating the university's code of conduct for their role in the matter. Casher was reportedly charged with recording images without consent.
The hearings for both players wrapped up over the summer.
It's possible Winston could be charged under Title IX laws without the presence of criminal charges. Oklahoma LB Frank Shannon was suspended for the 2014 season after a Title IX investigation into an alleged sexual assault. Oklahoma prosecutors declined to file charges against Shannon.
Winston was suspended for Florida State's win over Clemson for shouting an obscene phrase in the student union the Tuesday before the game. He was initially suspended for a half and then had the suspension extended to an entire game after he reportedly downplayed his role in the incident to FSU officials.
On Monday, coach Jimbo Fisher said a miscommunication was to blame for WInston wearing his pads and warming up with the team before being told to remove them.

Former USC player sues school and Lane Kiffin
Brian Baucham, a former USC CB, is suing the school and former coach Lane Kiffin as he claims he was forced to play in a game while already ill.
The lawsuit was filed Monday in a Los Angeles circuit court. Baucham played for USC from 2008-2012. He was academically ineligible in 2011 as a redshirt junior and played four games in 2012 with six tackles. The fourth game of the season was against Cal, the game that Baucham references in the lawsuit. He didn't play again the rest of the season.
Baucham claims he suffered ''cardiopulmonary damage'' and ''brain injury with neurocognitive deficits'' after he played against California at the Coliseum on Sept. 22, 2012. Baucham's lawsuit claims he was ill and dehydrated before the game, but was ''forced'' to play by Kiffin.
''USC and head coach Kiffin were clearly negligent and acted with conscious disregard for Brian's welfare and safety by forcing him to play ... despite his verified medical history and seriously ill condition,'' said Bruce M. Brusavich, Baucham's attorney.
Kiffin, now Alabama's offensive coordinator, was removed from his duties as USC's head coach after a loss to Arizona State in 2013.
USC responded to the lawsuit, which doesn't name damages, Monday night. Baucham also says USC tried to revoke his scholarship.
''It wouldn't be appropriate for us to comment on this lawsuit, and due to privacy laws we cannot comment on the specifics of this case,'' USC athletic director Pat Haden said. ''I will say that I am confident that we provide excellent medical treatment to our student athletes and that their health is always our primary concern ahead of any athletic competition."
USC and a former strength department employee were sued by former RB Stafon Johnson in 2011. Johnson was hurt in a weight room accident when his throat was crushed while bench pressing in 2009. The lawsuit was settled in 2012.

Georgia Tech students could win stormtrooper helmets at Miami game
Is Georgia Tech setting up its students for Star Wars showdown against Georgia at the end of the season?
The Yellow Jackets are asking all fans to wear white for its home game on October 4 aganst Miami. As part of the all-white promotion, five students have the chance to win "authentic" stormtrooper helmets.
.@GTStudents: Claim your ticket now for the #GTWhiteOut game vs. Miami Oct. 4 (7:30p) at http://t.co/Hivqfv72Jb. http://ift.tt/1og4Dju
— Georgia Tech Sports (@GTAthletics) September 22, 2014
To be eligible, students have to claim a ticket for the game and go to the game. The five helmets will be given away after the game. This website, which claims to make Star Wars stormtrooper costumes from the original maker and original molds sells stormtrooper helmets for approximately $500.
2,500 students will be able to get into the Star Wars theme as well via masks that will be given away at the game. But those aren't nearly as cool as helmets.
We reference an impending Star Wars showdown because of Georgia WR Chris Conley. Conley made a 26-minute Star Wars fan film that took place on the Georgia campus and featured an appearance from Georgia coach Mark Richt. Maybe the sequel can revolve around the game between the Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs on November 29.
