Illinois coach Tim Beckman says academic standards are hurting the Illini's recruiting

Illinois coach Tim Beckman has been known to make some perplexing statements from time to time.

After getting blown out 44-19 on the road to Washington on Sept. 13, Beckman offered this brilliance: “You take out 21 points on three plays and we’re in this football game. If you look at the second half, we won.”

A few weeks later, after losing at home to Purdue, Beckman told reporters “if we take out ten plays in that football game, it’s a different game.” He also reporters that his team could end up at nine wins if it “run(s) the table.”

Well, that hasn’t happened as the Illini sit at 4-5 with games against Iowa, Penn State and Northwestern remaining. Despite an upset over Minnesota two weeks ago, Beckman is firmly on the hot seat and on Tuesday’s Big Ten coaches’ conference call, Beckman was asked why he has not been able to land more talented recruits from the Midwest. Perplexingly, Beckman cited Illinois’ academics as a major factor.

Beckman says academic standards at Illinois are higher than other B1G schools. He says it's the biggest issue in recruiting for Illini.

— Dan Murphy (@DanMurphyESPN) November 11, 2014

@CheersHeavy He was asked why Illinois wasn't getting more good recruits from Midwest, cited academics as top reason.

— Dan Murphy (@DanMurphyESPN) November 11, 2014

You don’t have to look far to find another Big Ten school that would laugh at that assertion. Northwestern, who Beckman has hyped up as an in-state rival, has academic standards comparable to Ivy League schools. Illinois is certainly no slouch. The U.S. News and World Report rankings has Illinois ranked No. 42 nationally – third best in the Big Ten behind Northwestern (No. 13) and Michigan (No. 29). With that said, schools with similar rankings like Wisconsin (No. 47), Penn State (No. 48) and Ohio State (No. 54) haven’t had the trouble Beckman has had in recruiting.

Beckman’s 2014 class was ranked 75th nationally by Rivals.com – the worst in the Big Ten. His best class was his 2013 class (No. 47 overall), which was seventh best in the conference.

Beckman’s predecessor, Ron Zook, had three classes in Rivals.com's top 30 during his tenure.

At this point, Beckman just seems to be making excuses for his sputtering program. It will be a struggle for the Illini to reach bowl eligibility, but that starts this weekend with Iowa coming to Champaign for a noon kickoff on Saturday.

“As I said to the team Sunday, we have played extremely well in the fourth quarter and we have to continue that trend,” said Beckman. “The way I see it, we’re in the fourth quarter of our season. Our seniors have set goals and we have to get to six wins to be bowl eligible. “

Baylor and TCU create the first real controversy in the CFP rankings

One of the biggest debates prior to and after the release of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday centered around Big 12 foes TCU and Baylor.

Both teams are 8-1, both are coming off strong wins against Kansas State and Oklahoma respectively and now both are fighting for one of the coveted Top 4 spots in the playoff.

TCU is ranked No. 4 this week, Baylor is No. 7 and both teams have three games remaining. Of the two, Baylor has the tougher remaining schedule, but it still might not be enough to place the Bears ahead of the Horned Frogs if both teams finished 11-1. Of course, Baylor still holds the advantage in head-to-head after coming from behind to beat the Horned Frogs 61-58, but College Football Playoff committee chairman Jeff Long said that doesn’t necessarily matter.

“We're going to look at the total body of work... if they're the same, the head‐to‐head comes into effect,” Long said during his teleconference Tuesday night. “But for example, TCU's loss is to No. 7 Baylor, and Baylor's loss is to West Virginia who's not ranked in the Top 25.

“All those things are brought into the discussion and weighed and then decisions and votes are made.”

Here’s the Catch-22 of the way the committee is measuring teams: Long noted that TCU has two wins over teams in the Top 25 and Baylor has one. Baylor doesn’t get the credit for beating a then-Top 25 Oklahoma team because, by virtue of the Bears victory, the Sooners were knocked out of the rankings (TCU doesn’t get that Top 25 win either, by the way). Also, Long mentioned that TCU had an advantage because it lost to a team in the top 10 (Baylor) while Baylor lost to a team outside the rankings (West Virginia). So, if you’re following along, Baylor is actually getting punished somewhat for both its win against Oklahoma and its win against TCU.

A conference title game might be the solution to all this, but since the Big 12 doesn’t have one, that’s a moot point. In fact, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby maintained that because every Big 12 team plays every other one, that should be just as good as a title game.

"You don't have to guess how teams would play against each other," Bowlsby said Sunday. "In other conferences, maybe you have missed the top teams in the other division. This year, the SEC West is carving each other up, but we go through that every year."

If Baylor and TCU finish deadlocked, the conference designates the winner by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker, but the College Football Playoff committee isn’t bound by those same rules. While Long said it would take into account the conference winner, it still might determine TCU is the better team.

However, none of this debate will matter if one or both teams don’t win out and, in TCU’s case, win convincingly. Since TCU's final three games consist of teams without winning records (as of now), the Horned Frogs have to make pretty strong statements against those teams.

TCU coach Gary Patterson knows all too well the ups and downs of the final month. During the Horned Frogs undefeated 2010 season, a season in which they defeated Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, they defeated No. 5 Utah by 40 points and had to rally for a win against San Diego State the following week. That win dropped TCU behind Boise State in the rankings and nearly cost the Horned Frogs a shot at a BCS game.

"We thought it was over, then Boise gets beat in Reno, then we're back in the Rose Bowl," Patterson said. "What I learned out of that experience was you just better take care of you, because that's all you have.

“We've just got to be able to be the best football team we can possibly be, especially knowing that nobody even thought about us eight weeks ago, maybe even four weeks ago."

Report: Court docs liink NCAA in Freeh probe

Georgia welcomes RB Todd Gurley back, but will it hurt team chemistry?

Georgia running back Todd Gurley has missed four games while serving an NCAA-mandated suspension for accepting money for his autograph, but that hasn’t diminished the esteem in which coach Mark Richt holds his star running back.

“First offensive play, you’ll see Gurley; I can promise you that,” Richt said on his radio call-in show Monday night. “Todd Gurley is the starting tailback.”

Gurley was listed at the top of the Bulldogs depth chart for Saturday’s game against Auburn, ahead of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, allowing the former Heisman frontrunner to pick up right where he left off before he was suspended on Oct. 9.

Prior to his suspension, Gurley had 773 yards and eight touchdowns. He was leading the SEC with 154.6 yards per game.

Georgia was so excited about his return to the lineup that the Bulldogs even released a hype video.

But how will Gurley fit in with the new-look Bulldogs?

Prior to his suspension, Gurley was the bulk of the offense. The passing game struggled and freshmen Chubb and Michel were still getting their feet wet (before Michel was injured).

In Gurley’s absence, the Bulldogs have rallied. Chubb has rushed for 671 yards, including four consecutive games of 143 or more yards, and five touchdowns. Similarly, the passing game has seemingly come alive with 573 yards and six touchdowns in the past two games. The passing game had 851 yards in the games where Gurley was available.

“We did that without Todd,” Chubb said of the Bulldogs' effort in a 63-31 win against Kentucky last week in which they amassed 305 yards rushing and 559 total yards. “So I’d think there’s a lot more we can do.”

If Georgia can wrap Gurley into this new offense that is seemingly more confident and well rounded, the Bulldogs could still win the SEC East and provide a formidable challenge in the SEC title game. However, if the team goes back to its earlier ways and becomes dependent on Gurley, it won’t be nearly as strong as it’s become in the past four weeks while rallying around Gurley’s absence (Florida game excluded, of course).

This week’s game will be a huge test for the Georgia offense considering Auburn has been able to seemingly score at will against most of its opponents this season. Also, the Tigers are going to be eager to get back into the win column after losing to Texas A&M last week and falling out of the College Football Playoff Top 4.

Georgia has the offense to keep up with the Tigers, but keeping the diversity that has made them successful in the past four weeks will be key not only this weekend, but moving forward.

Emails show NCAA worked with Louis Freeh in Penn State investigation

NCAA President Mark Emmert responds to a question during an interview Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, in Indianapolis. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings) Court documents filed in Pennsylvania this week revealed that the NCAA “worked closely” with the firm hired by Penn State to conduct an independent investigation of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal, according to ESPN’s “Outside the Lines.”

The firm, led by former FBI chief Louis Freeh, released a report on July 12, 2012 that the NCAA used as its basis to levy unprecedented sanctions against Penn State. Those sanctions, handed down on July 23, 2012, included a four-year bowl ban, significant scholarship losses, vacating of the PSU football team’s wins from 1998-2012 and a $60 million fine.

Court documents show that the “correspondence between Freeh and the NCAA began less than two weeks” after Penn State hired Freeh’s firm. Documents show that NCAA president Mark Emmert requested to speak with Freeh by phone on Nov. 30, 2011. From then on – from Dec. 2011 up until the release of the Freeh Report – the two parties communicated on a fairly regular basis.

These documents have come to light as part of a lawsuit filed by Pennsylvania Sen. Jake Corman and state treasurer Rob McCord. The basis of the lawsuit is the allocation of the $60 million fine against Penn State. Corman and McCord aim to use the fine for programs in Pennsylvania, while the NCAA intended to spread the fine money to organizations across the country.

The Penn State Board of Trustees accepted the findings of the report and then-president Rodney Erickson signed the consent decree accepting the sanctions in July 2012. The sanctions have since been lessened, but the validity of the report has long been questioned.

“Clearly the more we dig into this, the more troubling it gets," Corman told "Outside the Lines." “There clearly is a significant amount of communication between Freeh and the NCAA that goes way beyond merely providing information. I'd call it coordination ... Clearly, Freeh went way past his mandate. He was the enforcement person for the NCAA. That's what it looks like. I don't know how you can look at it any other way. It's almost like the NCAA hired him to do their enforcement investigation on Penn State. At a minimum, it is inappropriate. At a maximum, these were two parties working together to get an outcome that was predetermined.”

In addition to communications between the Freeh group and the NCAA, documents also showed that the NCAA “provided proposed search terms to help Freeh’s investigators better search emails.”

When Freeh announced the details of the report during a press conference the day of its release, he said the university “concealed critical facts” and did not report Sandusky in order “to avoid the consequences of bad publicity.” This covered areas the NCAA asked Freeh's investigators about from the beginning of the inquiry: lack of institutional control and Penn State’s “culture.” Freeh’s criticism centered on longtime PSU head coach Joe Paterno, former president Graham Spanier, former athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz.

Corman asserts that the NCAA aimed “to improve its own image at the expense of Penn State.”

"I'm angry. When you read the other communications we've seen, the NCAA is saying we have an image problem. So it looks like the NCAA was looking to improve its own image at the expense of Penn State. And to do that, they were orchestrating an outcome with Freeh to make it happen ... A lot of people were hurt by the sanctions brought down by the NCAA, and to think it was achieved possibly by this coordination by Freeh and the NCAA makes me very, very angry."

Shep Cooper, an administrator for the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions, admitted in another email disclosed in court this week that the NCAA’s leadership is “extremely image-conscious.”

“If they (NCAA leadership) conclude that pursuing allegations against PSU would enhance the association's standing with the public, then an infractions case would follow. I know that Mark Emmert has made statements to the press indicating that he thinks it could fall into some sort of LOIC (loss of institutional control) case," the email read.

As the investigation took place, Freeh maintained publicly that his investigation was entirely independent and would include “no favoritism,” per Outside the Lines. Penn State paid Freeh’s firm $8.2 million for the investigation.

Previous emails, released as part of Corman’s lawsuit last week, showed officials from the NCAA questioned their authority to sanction Penn State. Former NCAA vice president of enforcement wrote in an email dated July 14, 2012: “I characterized our approach to PSU as a bluff when talking to Mark (Emmert) yesterday afternoon after the call. He basically agreed b/c if we make this an enforcement issue, we may win the immediate battle but lose the war when the COI (NCAA Committee on Infractions) has to rule."

Additionally, NCAA Vice President of Academic and Membership Affairs Kevin Lennon wrote in another email from July 14 that the NCAA was “banking on the fact the school is so embarrassed they will do anything” before Erickson signed the consent decree.

The newly released emails can be read here.

Alabama auctions off press box seats for Western Carolina

If you’ve ever wanted to see how the media watches an Alabama football game, now is your chance.

Alabama is auctioning off a chance to watch next week’s game against Western Carolina from the perch of the press box. The package includes four reserved press box seats, pregame meal, all of the materials the press gets, four gameday programs and a chance to meet Eli Gold and the other members of the Tide’s radio crew.

Currently, one fan is ready to pay $475 for the experience.

Here’s are details from the listing:

Have you ever wanted to experience a football game from the press box? This is your chance to experience the Western Carolina game as a media guest. On November 22, 2014 you and three guests will be able to watch the game from press level, receive all pre-game press materials, and eat with the media in the Bryant-Denny Stadium Press Room.

The media is probably super excited to share this space with some fans. Kinda flies in the face of the whole no cheering in the press boxes tenet. I’ll be the first to say there’s nothing particularly exception about the press box except that it’s away from the elements. But hey, if you have several hundred dollars to spend on a game against Western Carolina then why not try something different?.

Florida State center Austin Barron expected to play vs. Miami

Florida State center Austin Barron is expected to return when the third-ranked Seminoles (9-0) take on Miami (6-3) on Saturday night. Barron, a senior, has missed the last four games with a broken arm and could even return to the starting lineup this weekend, according to Warchant.com.

“That’s the plan,” head coach Jimbo Fisher said. “He’s on the active roster. We’ll get him in the game. We’ll see. He can play, but (Ryan) Hoefield’s still doing a great job. So we’ll see how we go.”

Barron was injured against Wake Forest in early October and it was feared that he could miss the rest of the season. Redshirt freshman Ryan Hoefeld has filled in while Barron was out, but the senior returned to practice Monday and the Fisher plans to work him in to some degree against Miami.

“Austin’s been great. He’s ready to roll. He’ll be right back and ready to play,” Fisher said.

Though this was the first year Barron was named FSU’s full-time starter, he started several games previously in his career and saw significant action on special teams.

Fisher said Barron was playing great before the injury occurred.

“He really was,” Fisher said. “He got three or four games under his belt and was just starting to get into the groove of playing. You just don’t immediately, because you start, go in there and play great. Not everybody does that. He was really becoming very solid.”

Miami running back Gus Edwards (7) celebrates a touchdown with offensive lineman Ereck Flowers, right, during the first half against Virginia Tech. (AP Photo/Steve Helber) Meanwhile, Miami could also see a starting lineman return to the field, though head coach Al Golden is less optimistic than Fisher is about Barron.

Left tackle Ereck Flowers returned to the practice field this week for the Hurricanes. The 6-foot-6, 322-pound junior underwent minor knee surgery two weeks ago and Golden said Flowers is “making progress.”

“I wouldn’t say we’re cutting him loose yet,” Golden said, per the Palm Beach Post.

Flowers started 21 straight games for Miami before injuring his meniscus against Virginia Tech on Oct. 23. He missed the team’s most recent game against North Carolina on Nov. 1 and though he was not listed on the team’s depth chart on Tuesday, Golden didn’t rule him out for Saturday.

If Flowers can’t play, Golden said true freshman Trevor Darling and fifth-year senior Jon Feliciano would start and that the two can play on either side of the line.

Saturday night’s game will kickoff at 8:00 p.m. ET. at Sun Life Stadium.

Nebraska's Vincent Valentine was unhappy with Huskers' CFP drop

Lost in the jumbling of the top 10 in Tuesday's College Football Playoff rankings is the drop that the Nebraska Cornhuskers suffered.

Your first reaction is probably that Nebraska lost on Saturday, right? No. But the Huskers didn't win, either. Nebraska was off and fell from No. 13 to No. 16. It's a drop that undoubtedly doesn't sit well with Nebraska fans and even with some players like defensive tackle Vincent Valentine, who has 27 tackles and two sacks this season.

Dang I didn't know bye weeks count as losses smh. Disrespect.

— Vincent Valentine Jr (@TheRealVRVJ) November 12, 2014

Saturday can't come fast enough now. Time to go get it.

— Vincent Valentine Jr (@TheRealVRVJ) November 12, 2014

While four teams above Nebraska lost last week, only one, Notre Dame, fell below the Huskers. Auburn, Kansas State and Michigan State all stayed ahead of Nebraska, even though Nebraska has one loss and each of those three teams has two.

Plus, three teams below Nebraska made moves ahead of the Cornhuskers. UCLA, Arizona and Georgia all moved up despite also each having two losses.

Was Nebraska punished because it's loss came to Michigan State, who lost to Ohio State on Saturday? It's not out of the realm of possibility.

We'll be blunt. Nebraska has little, if any, chance of making the College Football Playoff. But not all hope is lost for making a New Year's Bowl game. If Nebraska beats Wisconsin Saturday and goes undefeated and wins the Big Ten, the Huskers will likely finish the season inside the top eight of the rankings.

But given the movement in this week's rankings, the only thing we're entirely sure of is that we're not sure of anything.
