UCLA scores late to beat Texas
South Carolina quarterback Dylan Thompson
Boston College beats USC 37-31 for first top-10 home win since 1989
It’s hard to get excited about USC because every time we think the Trojans might be reverting back to their early 2000’s form, they go and lose a game they probably should have won.
Case in point: Boston College 37, USC 31.
It’s easy to say this was a case of a young West Coast team travelling to the East Coast after an emotional win, but Boston College deserves a heap of credit for this victory because it flat-out beat the Trojans, pure and simple. This is a Boston College team that hadn’t defeated a ranked team since 2007 and hadn’t beaten an AP Top 10 team at home since 1989. So how did they work their magic against the Trojans? By making USC one-dimensional.
The Trojans running game, which had been a staple of its victories in its first two games, was held to just 20 yards by a Eagles defense that allowed more 300 rushing yards to Pittsburgh just a week ago.
Meanwhile, offensively, Boston College hit USC with the option, an offensive scheme it doesn’t see often and for which it clearly wasn’t prepared. USC had no answer for quarterback Tyler Murphy who led the Eagles to 506 yards of total offense while rushing for 191 yards and a score.
This loss isn’t the end of the world for USC, but I think any shot at the College Football Playoff is probably out, especially since the Trojans don’t face Oregon on the regular season schedule. But winning the Pac-12 South is not out of the cards with a South Division that has looked a little rickety through the first three weeks, and if the Trojans could get to the Pac-12 championship and perhaps beat Oregon, well, then, that might be a different story.
This is a disappointing loss, but this is also a young USC team still learning a new coaching staff. There were bound to be highs and lows and there probably won’t be a bigger emotional swing than the one from the Stanford win to this loss.

In Brett Hundley's absence, UCLA's Jerry Neuheisel tosses game-winning TD against Texas
There isn't a QB controversy brewing in Westwood, Calif., but if UCLA's Brett Hundley is out for an extended period of time, UCLA now knows it can win a big game with Jerry Neuheisel at QB.
Hundley injured his left elbow early in the first quarter of Saturday's game against Texas and was replaced by Neuheisel, the son of former UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel. And in three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Neuheisel tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Payton to give the No. 12 Bruins a 20-17 win over Texas.
Hundley's elbow was hurt on a QB run. As he fell to the ground on top of a Texas defender, his left elbow took the brunt of the impact as he braced himself with his left hand. He immediately jogged to the sidelines and was pushed down by coach Jim Mora for an injury timeout.
At halftime, Hundley was ruled doubtful for the game and spent the second half with a bag of ice on his elbow.
For most of his time replacing Hundley, Neuheisel leaned on a running game that racked up 217 yards. Though Texas quickly realized the lack of downfield passing and keyed on the run game.
Texas took a 17-13 lead with over five minutes left in the fourth quarter and on UCLA's next drive, forced a fumble. A few first downs or a score could have ended the game.
Instead, UCLA forced Texas to punt and Ishmael Adams returned a 58-yard punt 45 yards to the Texas 33-yard-line. That's when UCLA broke out the deep play. With Payton one-on-one against his defender, he got separation and Neuheisel hit him for the touchdown.
It's unknown how long Hundley, a preseason candidate for the Heisman Trophy, will be out. Mora said after the game that Hundley would be re-evaulated when the team returns to Los Angeles.
Jim Mora said QB Brett Hundley will be reevaluated tomorrow. Will have an MRI. Said Hundley "begged" to enter game.
— Jack Wang (@thejackwang) September 14, 2014
If he's out more than just Saturday night, it's Neuheisel's team. Any potential wins with him at QB may not be pretty, but nothing much has been pretty about UCLA's season so far. Yet the Bruins are undefeated at 3-0 and that's about all that matters.

Thanks to a close call on a sneak, South Carolina holds off Georgia 38-35
We'll never know where the football in South Carolina QB Dylan Thompson's hand really was when he was down on the ground under a mass of linemen in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game against Georgia.
But the spot he got was enough as South Carolina converted a fourth-and-inches with 1:22 left in the fourth quarter to hold on for a 38-35 win and guarantee the Bulldogs wouldn't get the ball again.
How close was it? Officially, it was this close.
Spotting the football can be an inexact science, especially when it comes to QB sneaks. The ball was at midfield and Thompson simply needed to get part of the ball to Georgia's side of the field for a first down. While he was wrapped up in the backfield, Thompson didn't lose yardage. But he didn't gain much either, at least what officials could tell from the pile.
When the measurement was done, Georgia thought it had stopped South Carolina while South Carolina got the first down.
It's not a bad call by any means; QB sneaks are successful more often than not, and are virtually guaranteed for such a short distance like that as long as the snap is clean. It just was incredibly decisive. Georgia had been able to move the ball very well against South Carolina's defense in the second half. Getting into field goal range would have been no big deal with over a minute remaining.
Making the field goal might have been a big deal. In the first half, Marshall Morgan set the SEC record for consecutive field goals made at 20. But after he set the record, Morgan missed two field goals, including one from 28 yards away with just over four minutes remaining that would have tied the game at 38-38.
The attempt was set up by an interception by Georgia's Damian Swann, who read the eyes of Thompson and returned the ball to the South Carolina six. After an SC penalty put Georgia officially at the four, an intentional grounding penalty by Hutson Mason on first down effectively killed any opportunity for a TD as South Carolina's defense made a crucial stop.
While Georgia scored three touchdowns in the second half, South Carolina was able to keep the Bulldogs behind the entire second half. Until the missed field goal, the Gamecocks had moved the lead back to two possessions every time Georgia crept within a touchdown.
With a win, Georgia would have assumed clear favorite status in the SEC East while South Carolina, at 0-2, would have been hoping for madness among the division to have a shot at making the SEC East championship.
Now, both teams have a loss and South Carolina could have the advantage. Both teams travel to Florida and the Gamecocks have Missouri, last year's SEC East winner at home while Georgia has to go to the other Columbia (Mo.) and face the Tigers.
It's also worth pointing out that the winner of this game has not won the East in each of the past three seasons.
The victory was South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier's 201st SEC victory, tying him on for second on the SEC career victories list with longtime Georgia coach Vince Dooley.

Texas goofs on coin toss, UCLA will receive ball to start both halves
The coin toss for a college football game is a fairly simple thing. A captain from the visiting team calls heads or tails and ordinarily, if he wins the toss, he gets to choose whether his team will receive the kickoff to start the game or he can defer that choice to the second half.
Apparently one of Texas’ team captains Saturday night against UCLA had trouble understanding this.
The Bruins won the toss and elected to defer their choice to the second half. At this juncture, Texas was given the opportunity to choose whether to receive the opening kickoff or go on defense. When this happens, 99.9 percent of the time, a team will choose to receive the ball to start the game since it will not have the opportunity in the second half, but inexplicably, Texas chose to kick.
So UCLA wins the toss and elects to defer. And then Texas chooses to kickoff. So UCLA will get it twice.

Jim Mora was seen on the big screen mouthing "We get the ball twice?"
— Bruin Report Online (@BruinReport) September 14, 2014
The ref even turned the microphone off to explain to the Texas captain what he was doing. And they still chose to kick.
— Bruin Report Online (@BruinReport) September 14, 2014
Texas coach Charlie Strong wasn't pleased.
Fortunately for Strong, his defense was able to stop the Bruins to start the game, but the Bruins will have an extra possession because of the gaffe. It remains to be seen if it will cost the Longhorns.

Louisville and Virginia scuffled at halftime of the Cavaliers' win (video)
Louisville and Virginia were a bit chippy as the teams entered the locker room for halftime.
They both headed to the tunnel at the same time as Virginia led 10-7, and players started exchanging words. It went from there, as one Virginia player grabbed a Louisville player, who looks like he started swinging.
Officials quickly got into the middle of the brouhaha and threw flags. But the penalties offset as the second half kickoff was from the usual spot.
The teams were acting like long-time ACC rivals in the skirmish though this was the first time they had played each other as members of the ACC and the first time the teams had played each other since 1989, or before any of the players on each roster were born.
This will be a meeting that happens annually from now on though. The two teams are set as rivals in the ACC's 14-team format. Virginia won Saturday's meeting 23-21 and its fans stormed the field after the game.

Rutgers is very jazzed about its first Big Ten home game and its fans are expressing their joy in some interesting ways.
The Scarlet Knights hosted Penn State on Saturday. The most, uh, prolific fan was a shirtless man with a cowboy hat. He spelled out "Hello Big Ten" on his chest in tan lines.

How long do you think it took to spell that out? And do you think someone helped him? Otherwise he's doing it upside down or in the mirror. (We're also not going to rule out the possibility that this isn't his first time embarking on this type of endeavor.)
He wasn't the only one in being creative. The actions from Rutgers fans make sense; the school wants to establish a rivalry with Penn State, located the closest Big Ten state to New Jersey. There are 15 New Jersey players on Penn State's roster, so this sign addressed that fact.

Virginia coach Mike London honors military with four different hats in each quarter (Photo)
Virginia knocked off a ranked team for the first time since November 2011 when it beat No. 21 Louisville at home Saturday afternoon. Throughout the ballgame, Cavaliers head coach Mike London found a simple and effective way to honor America’s military.
September 11 was just two days ago, and many college football programs around the country have been showing signs of patriotism to commemorate those who passed away. London’s way of showing respect was to wear the hat of a different branch of the military in each quarter of the game.
#UVA coach Mike London wore a different service branch cap in each quarter today http://t.co/lAtJ0XQ9vJ
— Cork Gaines (@CorkGaines) September 13, 2014
It was a very cool tribute by London, whose Cavaliers improved to 2-1 and won an ACC game for the first time since November 10, 2012. Virginia won just two games in 2013, so London’s team is off to a good start in 2014.
The Cavaliers will play BYU on the road next Saturday.

East Carolina notches first upset against Virginia Tech since 2008
East Carolina is no stranger to upsetting power conference teams, but no win was bigger than Saturday’s 28-21 triumph against Virginia Tech.
The Hokies had just come off what was perceived as a monumental victory against Ohio State and were garnering national headlines as a possible team to watch in the ACC.
However, all of that disappeared early during Saturday’s game against East Carolina, as the Pirates struck first and fast with two touchdowns in the first 5 minutes of the game. They added another score before the end of the first quarter and that looked good enough to pull off the upset until late in the fourth quarter when the Hokies tied it with 1:20 remaining.
But East Carolina answered the drive with a touchdown to seal the victory with 16 seconds remaining.
It was East Carolina’s first win against Virginia Tech since 2008 and just the sixth win in the 19 games they’ve played. Each of the past three games has been decided by a touchdown.
While East Carolina deserves a lot of praise for its ability to go into Blacksburg and win, we also have to step back for a second and realize that Virginia Tech’s win against Ohio State really wasn’t as great as many made it out to be. That’s not an indictment on Tech — any win at Ohio State is a good win — but that is not a good Ohio State team regardless of its 66-0 drubbing of Kent State on Saturday.
Virginia Tech might be good enough to win the ACC Coastal, but that’s not saying a lot. It’s not good enough to win the entire conference. Ohio State might be battling for the top of the Big Ten, but is that really an accomplishment?
Quite honestly, East Carolina might be the best out of all three of these teams and might have the best chance at winning its conference. The American Athletic Conference hasn’t exactly been a juggernaut and East Carolina’s win Saturday is the best the conference has had to offer so far.
It’s surely one of the best upsets we’ve seen so far this season simply because of the hype Virginia Tech had coming into the game.

Virginia Tech's Isaiah Ford corrals TD catch with one-hand against East Carolina (GIF)
Isaiah Ford's TD catch was about the only thing that went right for Virginia Tech in the first half against East Carolina.
Ford made an incredible 21-yard grab with a defender draped all over him late in the second quarter as the Hokies trailed 21-0. However, look closely at the GIF, we're not sure it was complete.
We're not taking anything away from Ford's effort. The defender on the play was called for pass interference (a penalty that was ultimately declined), but the ball appeared to hit the ground as Ford brought it into his other hand.
After a replay review, the call on the field stood due to a lack of conclusive evidence.
Inconclusive may be a good descriptor of the Hokies this season after the first half against East Carolina. A week after beating Ohio State on the road, the Virginia Tech looked flat out incompetent against ECU for most of the first half. The defense that stifled the Buckeyes and QB J.T. Barrett struggled against ECU's Shane Carden. Carden threw for nearly 300 yards in the first half and compiled all three of ECU's scores.
And if it wasn't for three failed drives inside the Tech 20, it could have been worse. Virginia Tech's offense was brutal too. Until the 73-yard scoring drive that ended with Ford's TD, VT had 75 yards of offense.

UMass scores touchdown on fake punt against Vanderbilt (GIF)
When a team is punting near midfield on an easily achievable fourth down distance, you've always got to be aware of the possibility of a fake punt.
Against UMass in the first quarter, Vanderbilt was not paying attention.
On a fourth-and-five, UMass competed a fake punt pass for a 53-yard touchdown. Punter Brian McDonald faked like he was going to punt the football and found a wide-open Rodney Mills who simply outraced everyone to the end zone for the score.
As Vanderbilt went to block the punt, the failure to cover Mills looked like a miscommunication. Two players ran visible pass patterns from the inside of UMass formation. One player was picked up. Mills was not.
The TD gave UMass a 14-0 lead over Vandy, who started freshman QB Wade Freebeck. Freebeck became the fourth Vanderbilt QB to see time in the Commodores' first three games this season, though he was pulled in the first half after he was 1-2 for three yards and an interception. He was replaced by Patton Robinette, who started the season as Vanderbilt's QB.
