Wisconsin QB Joel Stave isn't hurt, he's just not mentally ready to play

Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave isn’t hurt.

Forget the statement the school issued Tuesday that said Stave would miss time due to an injury to his throwing shoulder, coach Gary Andersen and Stave insist an injury isn’t the issue; Stave is the issue.

Stave is dealing with confidence issues that are causing him to second-guess even the simplest of throws. He doesn’t know what caused this mental issue and he’s not exactly sure how to get rid of it. All he knows is that it’s effecting his play and Andersen thought it was best for him to step away for awhile.

One reporter even asked Stave if he thought he had the “yips,” which is defined as a loss of fine motor skills without any explanation.

"Maybe on some level," Stave said of the suggestion. "I've heard of that, too. The yips, a golfer who can't hit it straight and stuff like that. I know I can throw the ball. That's something that since I've been a kid, not even just football, I've been good at throwing things. I could throw a baseball. Give me a volleyball, I can chuck it across a gym.

"I've just been good at throwing things since I've been young. It's not a lack of confidence. It's not a lack of preparation or anything like that. It's just a matter of getting back to feeling comfortable and feeling like the ball's coming out the way it should."

Added Stave: "I'll be throwing it good, throwing it good and then all of a sudden I feel like I hang on to it too long. One will sail, one will slip and then you start thinking, 'Oh I've got to hang on to it longer.' That's what happens when you start thinking too much.”

Stave's overthinking could have started when Andersen decided to open up the quarterback competition despite Stave having a pretty decent season a year ago. He threw for 2,494 yards and his 22 touchdowns were second-most in school history behind Russell Wilson. However, he did struggle with inconsistency and Andersen wasn’t pleased about his 13 interceptions.

Andersen said on the Big Ten teleconference that he started noticing the issues during the Badgers’ second scrimmage on Aug. 18. Before that, Stave was leading the competition to be the team’s starter against LSU. However, his mental hangup more or less forced Wisconsin to go with Tanner McEvoy, a player who demonstrated against LSU that he was not ready to lead the team against a big-time opponent.

Stave has not missed practice and is still attending meetings. However, he has not participated in team drills, only individual work.

So, until Stave works through the mental side of the game, Wisconsin is going to have to lean on McEvoy to at least manage the team through Saturday’s game against Western Illinois and perhaps through the rest of the nonconference schedule, which includes Bowling Green and South Florida.

Perhaps there’s some silver lining that it’s not a structural injury considering Stave did injure his AC joint during the Badgers’ bowl game against South Carolina. But, on the flip side, getting over this kind of mental hurdle might prove far more challenging.

And until Andersen can see Stave is ready to be the quarterback he was, he’s not going to play him.

"All I can do is look at Joel and try to help a kid through the process of where he goes and how he's practicing," Andersen said. "But in Joel, we've just got to get him back where he needs to be. So my timeline doesn't really matter by performance or any timeline I'm sitting at. I'm looking right now to say how do we get Joel to say I'm ready to go? That's the timeline I'm looking for right now that's important to me."

Former BYU QB Max Hall arrested for suspicion of shoplifting, drug possession

Former BYU QB Max Hall was arrested Friday after allegations of shoplifting and drug possession.

Per the Arizona Republic, police said Hall had stolen items from Best Buy and Wal-Mart in his backpack as well as a "personal use quantity of cocaine." He was released after his arrest, which happened at a Best Buy.

Hall, 28, is an Arizona native and transferred to BYU from Arizona State after he served his mission. He's BYU's second-leading passer with 11,365 career passing yards. (Ty Detmer is first with 15,031.)

Hall played for BYU from 2007-2009. In his three years as a starter, BYU was 33-7 and finished 11-2, 10-3 and 11-2. He's thrown for the most career touchdowns of anyone in the Mountain West Conference.

He signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent following the 2010 NFL draft. He played in six games that season and started three. He hasn't played a game in the NFL since.

According to the Republic, he was serving as the offensive coordinator at a Phoenix-area high school.

Bryce Petty is optimistic he'll play Saturday against Northwestern State

Baylor QB Bryce Petty does not want to miss the Bears' next game even if it may not be the most practical thing to do.

Petty cracked two transverse processes in his back on Sunday against SMU. The transverse process is the bony points that stick out on each side of a vertebra. As back injuries, especially ones with the word "cracked" in them, it's not a terrible injury and one that can heal on its own. Petty says he's going to try to play through it Saturday against Northwestern State.

“That’s my goal towards the rest of the week,” Petty said via the Dallas Morning News. You can’t do anything worse to it, so if it’s bearable, I’ll do it.”

Petty compared it to a little finger injury. According to the AP, he said he field "great."

“It’s like a pinkie,” Petty said. “You can’t do much except just brace it up and wait for it to heal. Football is football, you have pain. Might as well get rewarded for it. I’ve watched for too long, put on the headset too many times for me to sit if I can be out there.”

We see Petty's thinking here. It's his senior season and he doesn't want to miss anything. But even if it's not an incredibly serious back injury, it's a back injury. You do not mess with back injuries.

He was in obvious discomfort against SMU and left the game early as it was well in hand. Against Northwestern State and even the rest of Baylor's nonconference slate, there's no sense in Petty risking the chance of delaying the healing prcess. WIth a hit or two the cracks could take much longer to heal. Is risking being less than healthy for conference play more importantant than missing games against weaker opponents?

It shouldn't be. As we said yesterday, here's to hoping pragmatism prevails.

Kliff Kingsbury says Texas Tech was 'embarrassed' after narrow win Saturday

Texas Tech's 42-35 win over Central Arkansas was not supposed to be close.

The Red Raiders were almost a five touchdown favorite before Saturday night's game. However, the game was nowhere near a blowout. Central Arkansas led 16-7 at one point in the first half and Texas Tech's largest margin was 14 points.

It was not a scenario where Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury wanted to apply the "a win is a win" cliché.

"It was embarrassed, I'd say, after the game," Kingsbury said Tuesday when asked about what it was like after the game. "We'll meet with them today, but after the game, embarrassed."

Tech committed 15 penalties for 113 yards. Kingsbury also used the e-word when he was asked about fixing the penalties.

"We'll work on it this week," Kingsbury said. "Yeah, we'll have some more punishments and see where it goes. But that's just embarrassing to watch your team go out and do those things. As a coaching staff and head coach I have to get it right this week."

Tech also committed the game's only two turnovers. Both were interceptions by QB Davis Webb and came on back-to-back drives in the first and second quarters. The first was in the end zone and led to Central Arkansas' first score of the night and the second was returned all the way to the Tech 2-yard-line, where UCA opened up that 16-7 lead soon after.

"Yeah, just early on (Webb) just wanted to make every play," Kingsbury said. "He throws the one in the end zone on first down, and throws one coming out on first down that basically goes for a pick six. Just got to go through your reads and get the ball to the playmakers. He doesn't have to do it all with the group he has around him. (Webb) did a lot of nice things, lot of throws, lot of completions, but once again, a couple crucial errors that he's got to cut out of his game."

Syracuse QB Terrel Hunt won't face further punishment after throwing a punch against Villanova

Syracuse quarterback Terrel Hunt will not receive further discipline from the ACC after throwing a punch during Friday night’s 27-26 double overtime win against Villanova.

Hunt was running a draw play when Villanova linebacker Joey Harmon met him. Harmon drove Hunt backward and into linebacker Dillon Lucas, who made helmet-to-helmet contact. Luces brushed his hand across Hunt’s facemask, which prompted Hunt’s reaction to punch. Hunt received an automatic ejection.

An ACC spokesperson told Syracuse.com that the league office had reviewed the play and determined it didn’t warrant further punishment.

There also won’t be any team punishment as coach Scott Shafer actually excused Hunt’s behavior and chalked it up to a heat-of-the-moment reaction.

"It's an emotional game and if you've never played it, you don't know what it's like to get frickin' pummeled," Shafer said. "There are people on your back and people talking to you and you react. We've all done it."

Hunt should be available for Syracuse’s next game against Central Michigan on Sept. 13.

Georgia RB Todd Gurley’s game against Clemson commemorated with graffiti wall (Photo)

Georgia running back Todd Gurley started the season in grand fashion by rushing for 198 yards and three touchdowns and adding a 100-yard kickoff return for a score.

So what better way to memorialize Gurley’s Heisman campaign kickoff then to spray paint the achievement on the side of a brick wall in Atlanta.

Gurley posted a picture of the artistry on his Instagram account thanking Broken Window Theory Clothing, an urban clothing shop in Atlanta, for the shout out.

This isn’t the first graffiti art Broken Window Theory Clothing has done, but — at least from the photos on its Tumblr page — it looks like the company’s first Georgia-football centric art.

While we think this looks awesome, we have one small correction: Gurley actually had 293 yards of total offense because he had a catch for -5 yards. But, you know, who cares? It still looks cool.

Three Florida players suspended for terminated Idaho game will play Saturday

For three suspended Florida players, the terminated game against Idaho will count as their suspension.

Before Saturday's scheduled game against the Vandals, coach Will Muschamp announced that DT Jay-nard Bostwick, DT Darious Cummings and WR Demarcus Robinson were all suspended for the season opener. Bostwick and Cummings were suspended for what Muschamp said was a violation of team rules and Robinson was suspended for a university sanction.

However, heavy rains prevented Florida and Idaho from playing. Well, OK, they kicked the game off after a lengthy delay, but as water was still standing on the field, the decision was quickly made to abort the attempt at trying to play.

A kickoff is apparently good enough to fulfill a game suspension. Monday, Muschamp said the players would be reinstated for the September 6 game against Eastern Michigan.

"We did have Darious Cummings and Jay-Nard Bostwick suspended for the first game for a violation of team rules," Muschamp said Monday. "They will be back this week with us. They’ve not just as far as a suspension of a game but they’ve had a lot of other things from me as well as Demarcus Robinson who had a university sanction that’s been resolved. Thomas, you asked me last week if he had handled all of his business from the year before and he had. This is a totally separate issue. Moving forward having those three guys back."

Muschamp clearly feels bringing the players back is the right decision. But it looks funny to see players suspended for a game, the game not happen, and the players be reinstated. If the terms of the suspension were simply a week or a time period, the justification for bringing them back is exponentially easier.

Maybe a happy medium would have the players serve the suspension whenever the two teams play again? Both Idaho and Florida have an open date on October 25, but the Gators play Georgia the week after the bye. Would Florida want to give up a bye week before the World's Largest Cocktail Party?

"Well I think both teams have a bye week so it’s important for both teams, but again, other than having an opportunity to prepare extra for an Eastern Division opponent, nothing more than that."

CSU coach Jim McElwain was not happy after Denver Mayor forgot his name

Following Colorado State's win over Colorado Friday night, the Rams and coach Jim McElwain were presented with the Centennial Cup by Denver Mayor Michael Hancock.

When giving the trophy to McElwain, Hancock forgot McElwain's name and stumbled for the right pronunciation. He was in the same zip code, but not on the same street.

(Video via KUSA)

The stumbling resulted in an awkward moment of McElwain taking the microphone from the emcee to say his name for Hancock.

During his Monday press conference, McElwain still wasn't over the slip. He wasn't even asked about it and brought it up himself. From The Denver Post:

"I will say one thing," he said. "I do understand where we are on the food chain from a relevance standpoint because the mayor doesn't even know my name.

"The guy needed help, man. Somebody pointed that out, that nobody thinks much of us, even though how many alums do we have in the Denver area? Like the most of any university there is? And yet the mayor doesn't even know the head ball coach's name.

"I guess that really shows where we are and where I am as a program. . . Boy, that makes a guy feel good. Guy giving you the trophy and can't spit your name out. Shows you how much they care about Colorado State, right?"

The disrespect card can be easy to play when you're a non-Power Five team in a rivalry game against a Power Five conference team, but after a two-touchdown win, it's this seems like the type of thing that can be a motivator for an entire season.

After Hancock learned that McElwain was still offended by his flub, he apologized on Twitter Monday evening.

honest mistake in exciting moment, tripped over my words & apologies 2 @CoachMcElwain. Don't want 2 distract from Rams' big win @DPostSports

— Michael B. Hancock (@MayorHancock) September 2, 2014

McElwain chimed in a short time later.

.@MayorHancock On behalf of Ram Nation, thanks for your message. Really proud of our team - looking forward to next year's game in Denver!

— Jim McElwain (@CoachMcElwain) September 2, 2014

We'll guess that Hancock will never forget McElwain's name ever again.
