Deshaun Watson to miss at least two games with a broken finger

Clemson freshman QB Deshaun Watson suffered a finger injury against Louisville on Saturday and is expected to miss at least two games and maybe more.

According to coach Dabo Swinney, Watson broke a bone in a finger on his right hand. Swinney said the broken bone is at the tip of Watson's finger and the QB will have four screws put into it. When asked Sunday if Watson would be back for the Tigers' game against Georgia Tech on November 15, Swinney said it was possible.

"I think that's a possibility," Swinney said. "That's well within the time frame. He's out for Boston College, Syracuse, then an open date, and then we'll play Wake and then Georgia Tech. It's not out of the question. It may be sooner or later. The one positive is that it's a quicker healing bone and because of what they're doing, they will be able to splint it and do some rehab with him. Hopefully that will speed up the process. We'll get Cole [Stoudt] back in practice this week. It's difficult when you don't get reps. Nick [Schuessler] got a lot of work last week, so that'll happen again this week and it'll be good for his development."

Stoudt is a senior who started the year as Clemson's QB. He has been nursing a left shoulder injury but replaced Watson on Saturday when he had to leave the game. Swinney said Stoudt had a shot in his left shoulder to play.

Watson replaced Stoudt against Florida State and has held on to the starting QB job since then, throwing for 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. In his time as Clemson's QB, Stoudt hasn't been as effective as Watson. Counting his statistics against Louisville, he's 62-of-109 for 649 yards passing and one touchdown and two interceptions. Watson is 75-of-112 passing for 1,176 yards.

Mississippi State ascends to No. 1 in AP and coaches polls

After starting the season unranked, Mississippi State is now No. 1 in the AP and coaches polls.

Thanks to the Bulldogs' win over Auburn on Saturday, Mississippi State vaulted over Florida State for the top spot in the polls. FSU had taken the No. 1 slot last week after Ole Miss beat Alabama.

Mississippi State's five week ascension from unranked to No. 1 is the fastest ascension to the top spot in the history of the AP poll. Here's how it went week by week:

In the coaches poll, the Seminoles got more first place votes (31 to 26) but are No. 2 to Mississippi State by a single point. While MSU has beaten LSU, Texas A&M and Auburn, all top 15 teams at the time of the game, Florida State has played only one ranked team, No. 22 Clemson in the fourth week of the season.

The top five in each poll was the same. After MSU and FSU, Ole Miss was third, Baylor was fourth and Notre Dame was fifth. Here are the complete polls:
