Bo Pelini says Michigan State's defense was clapping before the snap
Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said Tuesday that Michigan State's defenders were clapping before snaps during Saturday's game and that he would report the matter to the Big Ten office.
Michigan State wasn't penalized for simulating the snap count. Defenders mimicking the snap count is a penalty as defenders are outlawed from trying to fake out offensive players. At times during Saturday's game Nebraska had issues with its center and QB expecting the snap at the same time. Plus, the Cornhuskers had three pre-snap penalties, including this epic false start by Jake Cotton.
"Our center heard a clap and he snapped the football," Pelini said during his weekly teleconference Tuesday. "The rule is you can't do anything intentionally to simulate a snap or a snap count. It didn't happen a lot, but it happened a few times, and it's not the first time this has happened. Michigan State isn't the first team to ever do that. But you hope that they would catch it. It went past it and when we made an adjustment to make sure that doesn't happen again, we have to be on the same page."
Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio maintained his team did nothing wrong and that it uses claps to make pre-snap adjustments. The Spartans won the game 27-22.
"There are different ways we have to move our front, and some of that is done with clapping and all kinds of hand signals," Dantonio said. "I think what happened is he heard a clap but the center wasn't looking at the quarterback when he snaps the ball. Maybe that's the way that we normally do it, but in an environment like we had here, you need to look at the quarterback I guess. I don't know. But from my perspective, we have the opportunity to move our people any way we want to move them."
Nebraska mounted a furious comeback during the second half that fell short. After trailing 27-3 at the start of the fourth quarter, Nebraska scored 19 points to cut the deficit to five points but tossed an interception on a potential game-winning drive with less than a minute left in the game.
Pelini said the team wanted to push the tempo earlier in the game like it did in the second half, but because of the rainy conditions in East Lansing, Mich., Pelini said officials wanted to make sure the ball wasn't getting soaked.
"I thought they were standing over the ball and marking the ball because it was wet," he said. "I guess they were trying to dry the football off and at times we were ready to go. When it wasn't ready to be snapped, we were lined up but we went a little bit slower to kind of get us in the right play. There's a lot to it."

Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville on QB Gunner Kiel: 'I don't see him playing'
Cincinnati could be without starting quarterback Gunner Kiel when it plays Miami on the road Saturday.
Kiel, a sophomore, suffered bruised ribs in the 2-2 Bearcats’ blowout home loss to Memphis over the weekend. Per Cincinnati.com, head coach Tommy Tuberville said Tuesday that though Kiel did not break any ribs, his status for Saturday is not promising.
“I don’t see him playing,” Tuberville said. “He’s not much better than he was. I’m not going to put him out there if he’s not close to 100 percent.”
The injury occurred on the final play of the first half Saturday night. When Kiel went down, senior Munchie Legaux filled in in the second half.
Kiel, the top pro-style quarterback recruit in the 2012 class according to Rivals.com, made his long-awaited debut this season. During his recruitment, Kiel made commitments to Indiana and LSU before finally signing with Notre Dame. He redshirted his first year on campus with the Fighting Irish, then transferred to Cincinnati in spring 2013. After sitting out another season per NCAA transfer rules, Kiel was finally able to suit up for the Bearcats. Through four games, Kiel has played well, throwing for 1,257 yards, 15 touchdowns and only three interceptions.
With it looking like Kiel will be sidelined against the Hurricanes, Tuberville said that either Legaux or junior Jarred Evans will start at quarterback.
Legaux, in his fifth season with the program, has seen significant playing time throughout his career. He was the team’s starter in 2013, but went down with a serious knee injury in Week 2. In all, Legaux has appeared in 33 games in parts of five season, throwing for 2,904 yards and 20 touchdowns while also running for 652 yards and seven scores.
Evans, a junior college transfer, has just one pass attempt this year but he has five rushing attempts for 22 yards.
In addition to Kiel’s injury, Tuberville said leading rusher Hosey Williams will be out for “at least a month” with a knee injury. Williams has 140 yards on 26 carries for the Bearcats this season.
With Williams out for a few weeks and junior Tion Green (28 carries, 118 yards, 1 TD) out for the season, Tuberville said 5-foot-10, 176-pound senior Rod Moore will start at running back moving forward. On 16 carries this season, Moore has 69 yards and two scores.

Report: Police called to stadium to break up fight between Florida players Monday night
Florida’s already tough week with law enforcement got a little worse on Monday evening when police were called to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium to break up a fight between quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg and defensive lineman Gerald Willis.
University police were called to the outside of the stadium around 7 p.m. after receiving reports of the fight. By the time the police arrived, only one player was still there. Neither player pressed charges and no arrests were made.
It is unclear what the fight was about or how it started.
Florida announced earlier Monday that freshman quarterback Treon Harris, who was the primary backup and contending for the starting role, was indefinitely suspended from the team pending an investigation for sexual battery. No arrest has been made.
Mornhinweg is currently the backup quarterback to Jeff Driskel for Saturday’s game against LSU while Will Grier continues to deal with back spasms.

Alabama FB Jalston Fowler said players were 'scared to lose' against Ole Miss
Since Alabama’s loss to Ole Miss last week, there’s been a lot of speculation about the future of the Tide and whether the domination Alabama has had over college football for the better part of the past five years is starting to fade.
While it’s probably too early to make such a sweeping generalization, it is clear that the mentality of Alabama players has changed.
Fullback Jalston Fowler put that mentality in the spotlight Monday when he was candid about the feeling of the Tide as the game against Ole Miss started to slip away.
"It's like we were scared to lose," Fowler said. "Everybody wasn't playing their A-Game, they were just 'Oh, if we escape with a win we'll be alright.'"
Fowler said the practices leading up to the game told the story as Alabama wasn’t as sharp as it needed to be going into a game against a tough Ole Miss team. And Fowler said the lackadaisical practices aren’t uncharacteristic, because "it happens in practice all the time."
"Everybody was just mad, everybody was just saying we should have played better and worked our tail off, we shouldn't have been bull-stuffing all week like that," Fowler said.
It’s hard to assert that Alabama isn’t one of the power brokers in college football anymore, but it’s possible that the success the program has enjoyed in the past has started to go to its head while the rest of the country has seemingly caught up.
Alabama can’t just walk onto the field and expect to win. It needs to put in the same dedication and preparation its opponents do.
Alabama lost two games last year for the first time since 2010, and last week’s loss was the earliest the Tide have lost a game since that 10-3 season. With so much parity in the SEC, especially the SEC West, every game needs to be treated as if it’s a championship and Alabama isn’t in that mindset right now.
"We're supposed to be grown men," linebacker Reggie Ragland said. "We're supposed to be Alabama football and we didn't play like we should have."

Florida State RB Karlos Williams, WR Rashad Greene could miss Saturday's game
Florida State could be without two of its top offensive playmakers against Syracuse.
Running back Karlos Williams and wide receiver Rashad Greene, both seniors, were injured in the Seminoles’ win over Wake Forest Saturday afternoon. Williams injured his ankle in the second half and Greene suffered a concussion. According to USA Today, FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday that Williams likely will not play against the Orange while Greene is considered day-to-day.
“Rashad’s response (on Monday) was really good,” Fisher said. “No lingering effects. He had the symptoms of concussion and now he’ll go through the protocol. And our doctor here, we have an expert here, and we feel very comfortable with the hands he’s in. He’ll make all of the decisions.”
Williams leads the Seminoles with 353 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Meanwhile, Greene, who has 38 catches for 576 yards and three scores, is just four catches away from breaking the school’s record for receptions in a career.
In addition to the injuries for Williams and Greene, starting center Austin Barron broke his arm in the win and could miss the rest of the season. Through five games, the injury bug has bit the Seminoles far more often than in last year’s national championship season.
"You're always concerned, but as a coach you plan for (injuries)," Fisher said. "That's why we practice, to get as many of those guys ready and play them as quickly as we can because the attrition of football now. We're playing more games and we keep adding games, we need to add players. It's a lot of them.”
On the subject of injuries, Florida State’s weekend opponent, Syracuse, will be without starting quarterback Terrel Hunt for Saturday’s noon contest at the Carrier Dome. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Fisher and the Seminoles to err on the side of caution against the Orange with Williams and Greene with a home game against No. 6 Notre Dame coming in two weeks.

When Purdue hosts eighth-ranked Michigan State Saturday afternoon, the Boilermakers will wear special helmets in honor of cancer survivors.
The “Hammer Down Cancer Game” is sponsored by the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research, which uses yellow “as its color to honor its work to cure cancer,” so the team will wear helmets with a neon yellow stripe, ribbon and Purdue “P” logo.

According to a release from Purdue, the team will also wear neon yellow shoelaces, socks and gloves while going with an all-white uniform combination.

Colorado's Mike MacIntyre reprimanded and fined for chasing after officials
Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre has been reprimanded and fined $10,000 by the Pac-12 for his conduct after the Buffaloes' loss to Oregon State on Saturday. MacIntyre was not happy with the officials after the game was over and attempted to follow them off the field while expressing his displeasure.
After the game, MacIntyre chose not to comment on the officiating or the specific reason he was mad at the officials.
“The public postgame conduct by Colorado head football coach Mike MacIntyre was completely unacceptable,” Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. “Such misconduct violates Conference policy and this behavior will not be tolerated.”
“The Conference assigns a high priority for administrators, coaches and student-athletes to support its officiating program. Chasing and confronting an official or officiating crew after the contest fails to meet these high standards.”
The loss was Colorado's second straight one. Colorado DL Juda Parker said he liked seeing MacIntyre be passionate on behalf of his team, though we'll go out on a limb and say MacIntyre won't chase after the officials again this season.
"Personally, I like seeing that, "Parker said via the Boulder Daily Camera. "I like a coach that will fight for his players, fight for his team. That just shows he has his heart on his sleeve. As football players, this is a tough game. This is a tough man's sports. When we play this game, we wear our heart on our sleeve because we give everything we've got every single down.
"So when we see our coach that can't be out there and play with us, when he's coaching and he's going after the guys and we can see him getting emotional, personally, as a player, I like to see that because he really cares for the team."

Georgia Southern wearing special 'Traditions' uniform on Saturday (Photos)
Georgia Southern's homecoming game will feature special uniforms.
The Eagles are wearing a gray "Traditions" uniform against Idaho on Saturday.
"For this year's Homecoming, we designed an alternate uniform that honors Georgia Southern University's traditions with a focus on the future," Georgia Southern athletic director Tom Kleinlein said in a statement. "In creating a new alternate uniform every year, we're building a new tradition."
Get hyped eagle nation!! #GATA http://ift.tt/1yJynPq
— GSU Equipment (@Gsu_equipment) October 6, 2014
According to the school's release, players will have the choice of five different colors of cleats. The best part of the uniform is the helmet. The metallic look is sharp, as is the logo on one side and the number on the other. It's almost enough to override the texturing that Adidas has on the gray uniforms. The pattern has become a (pretty ugly) Adidas staple.
The back of the helmet also says "One More Time." It's a phrase that Florida fans have not uttered about Georgia Southern.

Alabama's Ryan Kelly and Denzel Devall out against Arkansas
In addition to Kenyan Drake, who suffered a serious ankle injury Saturday in the Crimson Tide's loss to Ole Miss, two other key players for Alabama will miss the game against Arkansas because of injuries suffered in Oxford, Miss.
C Ryan Kelly and LB Denzel Devall are both out for the game. Alabama coach Nick Saban met with reporters on Monday and said Kelly was out a couple of weeks because of a sprained knee.
Devall, like Drake, had ankle surgery, but could return this season according to Saban.
"Kenyan ... is probably a little worse in terms of his injury and recovery time," Saban said. "Denzel not probably as bad. Possibility of maybe three to four weeks, having a chance to get him back."
"Ryan Kelly has a sprained knee which we talked about before. Probably going to be a couple weeks depending on how his rehab goes as to when we can possibly get him back.
Devall has seven tacklesin five games for Alabama. Kelly is Alabama's starting center and is the leader of the offensive line. He went down when he was rolled up on in a pile on a running play.
Kelly, a junior, became Alabama's starting center last season after the departure of Barrett Jones. Devall started three games last season and had 30 total tackles.

Former Kentucky lineman in serious condition after falling from stadium upper deck
Brad Durham, a former Kentucky offensive lineman, is in serious condition after he fell from the upper deck at Kentucky's Commonwealth Stadium while celebrating the Wildcats' win against South Carolina.
Durham had his back to the upper deck railing and stumbled backwards. A man near him tried to grab on to Durham but he couldn't keep him from falling three stories.
"I tried to pull him, but he's a big guy. I couldn't hold him," Dan Forcum told the Lexington Courier-Journal. "It was like slow motion. I watched him falling. I saw him hit. He didn't move. It was awful. Just awful."
Forcum also said that Durham's feet landed in the aisle and his head landed in seats and he didn't land on anyone below. According to Durham's family via Lex18.com, he suffered broken ribs and vertebrae and is out of a medically induced coma.
Lex18.com also published a summation of the UK police report:
According to the official report taken by University Of Kentucky Police, one fan told an officer he "warned Durham he was getting close to the rail" and that when Durham was "celebrating a football play, he began to jump up and down" and "fell over the railing in front of him and down to the section below." "Nobody had pushed Durham," that fan said. He also believed Durham was "pretty intoxicated."
Durham played for Kentucky from 2007-2010. Kentucky coach Mark Stoops was asked about Durham's fall during his Monday press conference.
"I'll just say that with the great support and energy we had in that stadium, it was sad to hear that somebody got injured, and definitely our hearts and prayers are with anybody that got hurt at the stadium," Stoops said.
