Ajayi leads Boise State past Fresno State, 37-27
FSU: No indication Winston accepted money
Fourth quarter trick play helps Boise State hold off Fresno State 37-27 (GIF)
Boise State reached into its bag of tricks to pull out a home win over Fresno State Friday night.
Boise led most of the way, but a fumble on a kickoff allowed the Bulldogs to tie the game at 27 with 1:57 to go in the third quarter. On Boise’s next possession, senior quarterback Grant Hedrick led a methodical 17-play, 75-yard yard drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock and culminated in the eventual game-winning score.
On a first-and-goal play from the Fresno 9-yard line, Hedrick took a shotgun snap and handed the ball off Jeremy McNichols, who was in motion pre-snap, McNichols then gave the ball to wideout Thomas Sperbeck on a double reverse. Sperbeck saw a Fresno defender closing and fired off a pass to Hedrick who had ventured out from the backfield toward the end zone.
Hedrick was wide open and hauled the pass in with ease for the go-ahead touchdown, making it 34-27.
The Broncos defense stiffened when Fresno regained possession, forcing two punts and a late interception. Boise added a short field goal and was able to run out the clock with a 37-27 win.
The win improved Boise State’s record to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West while the loss dropped Fresno to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Broncos will host BYU at home next Friday night and Fresno will host Wyoming next Saturday.

Houston QB Greg Ward Jr.'s helmet flies off on hard hit (GIFs)
On its methodical first drive of the night against Temple, Houston drove down inside the Owls’ 10-yard line. On a third-and-goal, the Cougars’ 14th play of the drive, quarterback Greg Ward Jr. saw no one open and looked to run.
Ward Jr. a sophomore, sprinted left toward the goal line and was met with a hard hit from Temple’s Avery Williams just short of the goal line.
Ward Jr.’s helmet went flying at least five yards. Here’s another look.
Ward Jr. was fine after the hit, but Williams was shaken up and hobbled off the field.
Williams’ hit forced the Cougars to settle for a short field goal to go up 3-0.
Though Temple turned the ball over twice, a touchdown with under a minute to go in the first half allowed the Owls to cut Houston’s lead to 17-10 at halftime.

FSU: We're investigationg Winston autographs
Florida State releases statement on Jameis Winston autograph investigation
Florida State athletic director Stan Wilcox released a statement Friday afternoon regarding the investigation into autographs allegedly signed by Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jameis Winston.
The statement, in its entirety, reads:
Our Athletics Department compliance staff is reviewing issues raised by the media related to autographed items attributed to Jameis Winston. At this time we have no information indicating that he accepted payment for items reported to bear his signature, thereby compromising his athletics eligibility. The fact that items appear on an Internet site bearing the signature of a student-athlete does not singularly determine a violation of NCAA rules. We have kept both the conference office and the NCAA apprised of our efforts on this matter. The University takes very seriously any and all allegations of potential rules violations and processes them in accordance with ACC and NCAA policies and procedures.
The statement comes on the heels of multiple ESPN reports that said more than 2,000 Winston autographs had been authenticated by the James Spence Authentication website. Though the website will not reveal the identity of customers who submitted the items for authentication, Spence did tell ESPN.com that the company believes the purported Winston signatures are real.
Spence also said no one at his company knows whether or not Winston was ever compensated for signing any of the authenticated items.
Florida State said earlier in the week it was investigating if Winston ever accepted money for signing memorabilia. FSU’s investigation comes after Georgia running back Todd Gurley was indefinitely suspended for allegedly being compensated for his signature.
Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher maintains that Winston, who also is a pitcher for FSU’s baseball team, was not paid for signing any items.
“Never taken a dime,” Fisher said, via Warchant.com. “He’s signed thousands of things. The guy sits for an hour-and-a-half before a baseball game and signs, an hour-and-a-half after a baseball game. I mean, there are thousands of things out there with his name on there. He is very accommodating.”
No. 2 Florida State (6-0) will host No. 5 Notre Dame (6-0) at home Saturday night. Winston is expected to play.

Spread Options: Dr. Saturday's Week 8 picks against the spread
Another week, another week under .500. Should we put the fade alert back on? After going 4-6 last week , Spread Options is a healthy 26-43-1. Ugh. Let's see what's in store for Week 8.
Western Kentucky (-4.5) at Florida Atlantic, Noon ET: It's been a weird season for WKU. The Hilltoppers beat Bowling Green (the team that beat Indiana, the team that beat Missouri) by 28 in the first week of the season. But since then the only other win is against Navy, a team that's also pretty good. And of the three losses, one was to Illinois (where a pick-six turned the game) and another was in three OTs against Middle Tennessee. We'll take the Hilltoppers as they're the better team.
Baylor (-7.5) at West Virginia, Noon, ET: Should we expect a repeat of the 2012 game in Morgantown, W.V., where West Virginia won 70-63? And last year, Baylor won 73-42 in Waco, Tex. So there's a reason the over/under is set at 80. We're going to go out on a limb and say that the winner of this game does not hit 70 and that Baylor wins it by 10. TCU's offense is a tick above West Virginia's, and it's defense is better too.
Iowa at Maryland (+5), Noon, ET: Will we have another offensive explosion from Iowa? The Hawkeyes scored 45 against Indiana last week after a previous season-high of 31 against Northern Iowa. We're going to chalk that up to Indiana's defense. But even if Iowa continues its high-scoring ways, Maryland QB C.J. Brown is healthy after a bye and the Terps have a great chance of pulling the upset.
UCLA (-6.5) at Cal, 3:30 p.m. ET: Another road favorite? It looks dicey, but we like the Bruins by more than a touchdown. Cal was throttled by Washington at home last week and while a bowl game may be in the offing this year for the Bears, win No. 5 isn't happening on Saturday.
Clemson at Boston College (OVER 45), 3:30 p.m. ET: Cole Stoudt is making his first start for Clemson since he was replaced by Deshaun Watson against Florida State. Will he take advantage of his second crack at the starting gig? Boston College has scored 30 or more points in four of its six games. This is a low number, and while the Clemson offense without Watson isn't as potent, Stoudt plays well as a counter to BC QB Tyler Murphy.
Georgia at Arkansas (+3.5), 4 p.m. ET: Here's the upset special for the week. Not only are we taking Arkansas and the points, the Razorbacks will beat the Bulldogs straight up. And who will run the ball more? Will Georgia give RB Nick Chubb over 40 total carries? We're going with no. Arkansas will jump out to a lead and force QB Hutson Mason to throw downfield, something he hasn't been good at this year.
Oklahoma State at TCU (-10), 4 p.m. ET: Oklahoma State has teetered a little bit in its last two conference games, both of which were against the two worst teams in the conference. The home game against Iowa State was close before the Cyclones started making mistakes and the Cowboys simply didn't put Kansas away last week. Cast or not on his left wrist, Trevone Boykin is a superior QB to Daxx Garman and TCU wins by two touchdowns.
Missouri (+5.5) at Florida, 7 p.m. ET: Florida coach Will Muschamp says his team is going with a two-QB system Saturday night. It's hard to feel optimistic about it. And while it's hard to feel optimistic about Missouri QB Maty Mauk after a five-turnover game against Georgia, Mauk won't play that poorly two weeks in a row. Couple Missouri possibly being a better team straight up and Swamp that's not as intimidating as it used to be and we'll take the points.
Notre Dame (+12) at Florida State, 8 p.m. ET: There are questions about Notre Dame's defense after the Irish gave up 43 to North Carolina last week. But this isn't the same caliber of Florida State defense that the Seminoles had last year, either. There's no over/under for the game posted, but we expect a pretty high-scoring affair. Even if Everett Golson turns the ball over once or twice, Notre Dame should be able to hang with the Seminoles.
Stanford at Arizona State (+3.5), 10:30 p.m. ET: Could Arizona State QB Taylor Kelly play? He's been making progress from a foot injury he suffered in September against Colorado, but it looks like Mike Bercovici will get the start again. Arizona State's defense hasn't played well, but can Stanford take advantage of it? With or without Kelly, we like ASU to spring the upset at home.

Notre Dame safety Eilar Hardy invited back to roster after academic fraud investigation
One of the five Notre Dame players investigated for academic fraud could return to the field for the Fighting Irish this season.
Head coach Brian Kelly said Thursday that Eilar Hardy, a reserve safety, may be able to return to the practice field when the team returns from the bye week that follows this weekend’s matchup with No. 2 Florida State. Whether he returns is dependent on whether he gets his academics in order.
“I met with Eilar, we have some work to do in terms of some of his academic work he’s working on right now in terms of trying to get that organized,” Kelly said. “But if we’re able to get some of those things organized, we’re going to bring him back to practice after we get back from the bye.”
Unlike the four other players – cornerback KeiVarae Russell, receiver DaVaris Daniels, defensive lineman Ishaq Williams and linebacker Kendall Moore – Kelly received word that Hardy is eligible to return to the roster this season. Russell and Williams plan to return to the team for the 2015 season, while Daniels and Moore won’t return.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Kelly said Hardy is the “olny one that I have talked to that would be back on the roster.”
“We have some things to work on, he’s working on right now. Some of his classes and things of that nature. But I’ve invited him back on the roster to practice and then we’ll take it from there,” Kelly said.
Hardy, who appeared in 10 games in 2013 and registered 26 total tackles, became the fifth player to be held out of practice back in August when the investigation into academic dishonesty began.

Drug, larceny charges for Sooners chaplain
Chaplain for Oklahoma football arrested on drug, larceny charges
The man who serves as the chaplain for the University of Oklahoma football team was arrested Wednesday, according to the Oklahoman.
Kent Bowles, a regional representative for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), was arrested on “complaints of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, larceny, concealment of stolen property and obtaining cash or merchandise by bogus check or false pretenses.” The charges stemmed from an incident in which the 45-year-old Bowles “allegedly lured a man from his house by offering a bogus vehicle test drive.” When the man was gone, Bowles then allegedly stole prescription medications from the man’s home.
Police were called to the home Wednesday evening where they found the man and Bowles. When asked if he had anything concealed on him, Bowles “admitted that he had taken pills from the home.” An officer found Oxycodone and Hydrocodone in Bowles’ pockets.
Bowles told police he was in the man’s home as “part of a fundraising event” for the FCA.
Per the Oklahoman:
Bowles, who identified himself to police as an FCA representative, explained that he was at the home because the owner had agreed to test drive a GMC vehicle as part of a fund-raising event for the organization. Bowles claimed that for every 100 test drives, the Ferguson GMC dealership would make a donation to the FCA.
When contacted, a representative from the GMC dealership told police that the dealership “made a vehicle available to the FCA, but that no test-drive fundraiser existed.”
Before the man took the test drive, he told his wife that he was leaving Bowles alone in their home. She was able to monitor Bowles “using a security live stream on her phone.” When she saw Bowles “wandering through the house,” she contacted her husband and he returned home.
Bowles is not an employee of OU, but has worked in Norman for the last nine years and for the FCA for 21 years total. When reached for comment by The Oklahoman Friday, the FCA said Bowles is still an employee of the organization.
Bowles posted $5,000 bond and was released Wednesday after being booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center.

USC RB Tre Madden won't play this season
After getting off to a fast start in 2013, USC running back Tre Madden has been plagued by injuries and now the junior won’t see the field again until 2015.
With a painful turf toe injury lingering, Madden, his parents and USC head coach Steve Sarkisian met Thursday and decided to hold him out for the rest of the 2014 season and focus on his health for 2015.
“We’re moving forward,” Tre’s father, Curtis Madden, said to the OC Register. “It’s disappointing that he’s not going to be able to contribute this season. But there’s next year and the year after that.”
Last year, after running for 583 yards and six touchdowns in the Trojans’ first five games, Madden hurt his hamstring and wasn’t able to produce at the same level for the rest of the season. This time around, Madden suffered a turf toe injury in preseason camp and hasn’t played a down for the Trojans this season.
Additionally, Madden missed the entire 2012 season with a knee injury after making the transition from linebacker to running back. He took a redshirt that season, so he has one more season of eligibility. He also fits the criteria needed to apply for a medical hardship waiver, which would give him a sixth season.
At 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, Madden showed an impressive combination of power and speed while running for more than 100 yards in four of his first five games. After hurting his hamstring against Arizona in Week 6, Madden gained just 92 yards in five games the rest of the season.

What to watch, Week 8: Will outside distractions be too much for Florida State?
After two crazy weeks where ranked teams were losing left and right, we finally come down to Earth a little bit this week with an exciting, but less pressure-packed slate of games. Here’s what to watch in Week 8:
Game of the week:
No. 5 Notre Dame at No. 2 Florida State, 8 p.m. ET
The anticipation for this game has been marred somewhat by all of the off-field issues surrounding Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, still, this is a game that could decide whether the Seminoles are part of the inaugural playoff. FSU needs this win more than Notre Dame because the rest of its schedule isn’t nearly as strong as some of the other teams in the playoff mix. The Seminoles defense, which has been mediocre compared to last year, will have to be on the top of its game against Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, who will try to make this contest his signature Heisman moment.
Game to watch:
No. 14 Kansas State at No. 11 Oklahoma, 12 p.m. ET
Kansas State has faded into the shadows since its loss to Auburn, but that game has nothing to do with the Wildcats prospects in the Big 12. KSU is still one of the undefeated teams remaining in the conference and a win against Oklahoma could knock the Sooners out of championship contention. Oklahoma has struggled the past couple weeks. Quarterback Trevor Knight, who had such a hot start to the season, has cooled as he’s faced better defenses. Moreover, Kansas State’s defense has had an extra week to prepare for Oklahoma’s high-powered offense. These two teams got into a shootout last season and it will probably be much of the same this year. One note: Kansas State’s win in Norman two years ago is the only home loss against a ranked opponent for the Sooners during Bob Stoops’ tenure.
Also check out…
No. 4 Baylor at West Virginia, 12 p.m. ET
Two years ago, West Virginia defeated Baylor 70-63 in Morgantown, the highest-scoring game in Big 12 history. Expect more of the same in this contest, especially since both teams are riding high after come-from-behind victories that ended with game-winning field goals. While West Virginia is in the hunt for a bowl game, Baylor is trying to hold on to the top spot in the Big 12 and one of the top spots in the national rankings. Quarterback Bryce Petty had what many believe was his Heisman moment last week when he led the Bears back from 21 points down against TCU with just 11 minutes remaining. But he’ll need to continue to put up gaudy numbers if he wants to stay in the Heisman hunt and keep his team in the playoff hunt.
Don't waste your time with:
No. 21 Texas A&M at No. 7 Alabama, 3:30 p.m. ET
OK, OK, OK. Before everyone tells me I’m dumb for saying we shouldn’t waste our time with a game between ranked teams, hear me out. Have you watched either of these teams in the past two weeks? It’s been excruciating. Texas A&M QB Kenny Hill has been a turnover machine and Alabama has made more mistakes on special teams than I think I’ve seen them make in the past three seasons combined. These are not good football teams right now. Still, this game might be worth a watch if you want to see one teams reach its breaking point. Texas A&M has never lost three consecutive games under coach Kevin Sumlin and Alabama hasn’t had two losses by mid-October since 2007. Alabama’s defense is still one of the strongest in the country and it will have its hands full against an A&M offense that still ranks in the top 10. As for Alabama’s offense, well, if it can’t wake up against a pretty bad A&M defense, there are going to be a lot of questions in Tuscaloosa.
Keep an eye on:
Everett Golson, QB, Notre Dame
Against Stanford two weeks ago, Golson converted a fourth-and-11 from the 23 for a touchdown to give his Irish a 17-14 win. As of right now, that’s his signature moment. But a win against Florida State this weekend might be his Heisman moment. Florida State is certainly not the best defensive team the Irish have faced this season, but it’s considered the best overall team. Golson, who missed all of last season after violating Notre Dame’s academic rules, has come back with a vengeance and has emerged as a legit Heisman contender. He will be the best quarterback the Seminoles have faced this season and tough challenge. Golson, who is completing 62.5 percent of his passes for 1,683 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, has already lived up to expectations. A win against Florida State would surpass them.
Upset alert:
No. 10 Georgia at Arkansas, 4 p.m. ET
There weren’t many games that had upset potential this weekend and even this one is a little iffy. The only reason it’s out here is because Georgia had such an emotional win against Missouri last week following the suspension of running back Todd Gurley that might be a difficult act to follow. Arkansas was a blocked extra point away from tying and possibly beating Alabama. The Razorbacks are right on the cusp of getting their first SEC win under coach Bret Bielema and snapping 15 consecutive SEC game losing streak, the longest streak in the conference. Beating Georgia will not be an easy feat, especially since the Bulldogs are good at stopping the run and Arkansas is a run-first offense, but the game is at home and the Razorbacks could win on emotion alone.

Baylor starting guard Desmine Hilliard out for season
Baylor will be without a starting offensive lineman for the rest of the season.
The school confirmed Thursday night that guard Desmine Hilliard will undergo surgery on his wrist. Hilliard hurt the wrist late in the Bears’ 61-58 win over TCU last weekend.
The 6-foot-5, 340-pound Hilliard, a redshirt junior, started all 13 games at right guard for the Bears in 2013 for the Big 12 championship squad. With his season ending prematurely, junior Jarell Broxton is expected to fill in.
Broxton, a junior college transfer from Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., actually started and split time at right guard with Hilliard against TCU. The 6-foot-5, 330-pound Broxton has seen action in every game for the Bears this season, so it should be a relatively smooth transition into the starting lineup.
Now 6-0 and ranked fourth in the nation, Baylor faces West Virginia at noon in Morgantown.

Todd Gurley does not travel to Arkansas with Georgia
Georgia willl be playing its second-straight game without RB Todd Gurley Saturday.
Gurley did not board the team bus to travel to Arkansas, where the Bulldogs will play Saturday. The RB is currently suspended as Georgia investigates reports that he received money for signing autographs.
The news of Gurley's Arkansas absence is not unexpected. Earlier in the week coach Mark Richt said he didn't anticipate Gurley being able to play. The NCAA said Thursday evening it had not received Georgia's request for reinstatment for Gurley, and according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia officials continue to decline comment on Gurley's situation.
UGA officials on Friday continued to decline comment about the ongoing eligibility issue facing their star tailback. However, the NCAA reinstatement process and Georgia’s current place in it makes it evident that Gurley could not be cleared in time to play against Arkansas on Saturday even if it wanted.
Gurley reportedly accepted $400 for signing 80 items.
No Gurley means that freshman RB Nick Chubb will be the bellcow back for Georgia. RB Keith Marshall is also injured and against Missouri in a 34-0 win, Chubb had 38 carries and 42 total touches for 174 total yards.
Georgia plays Arkansas in Little Rock, Ark., at 4 p.m. ET Saturday. Gurley has 93 carries for 774 yards and eight touchdowns in five games this season.

Georgia's Gurley doesn't make trip, won't play
Bobby Bowden says Jameis Winston does things 'kids in grammar school would do'
Add Bobby Bowden to the list of notable people who believe Jameis Winston needs to grow up.
The former Florida State coach said Winston does things kids younger than him would do and that he needs to draw a line for himself to not do immature things any longer.
"He's got to grow up. He's got to grow up," Bowden told ESPN. "He does things that kids in grammar school would do, or kids in junior high would do, you know it. And I think once he draws the line and says I'm not going to step below this another time -- and I think he can do that -- but if he don't he's going to make it mighty tough on himself. I think his draft status has already dropped way down, but you know what's amazing to me about him? I don't care what goes on off the field, once he gets under the center he blocks everything else out."
Almost impossibly, scrutiny on Winston has increased over the past month as he's been suspended for Florida State's game against Clemson for saying an obscene phrase in the student union, the school has looked into reportedly over 2,000 autographs of his on an authentication website and as Florida State has proceeded with a disciplinary hearing against Winston. Winston's lawyer, David Cornwell, told ESPN that he's cooperated with the school and has already contacted FSU's Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Last Friday, Winston was notified of an informational hearing to precede a code of conduct hearing where he might be charged with violations of Florida State's code of conduct. He had five school days to respond and schedule the informational hearing.
A former Florida Supreme Court Justice will hear Winston's case and both Winston and the accuser had the right to strike one of the three possible candidates from consideration before the hearing is held and a judge is selected.
Winston is expected to play for Florida State against Notre Dame on Saturday. Earlier in the week, former Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson, who grew up in the same hometown as Winston, said that he gave the 2013 Heisman winner advice before he was cited for shoplifting crab legs and crawfish. He hasn't talked to Winston since.
Bowden is officially recognized as the winningest coach in FBS football history with 377 wins.
