Chaplain for Oklahoma football arrested on drug, larceny charges

The man who serves as the chaplain for the University of Oklahoma football team was arrested Wednesday, according to the Oklahoman.

Kent Bowles, a regional representative for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), was arrested on “complaints of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, larceny, concealment of stolen property and obtaining cash or merchandise by bogus check or false pretenses.” The charges stemmed from an incident in which the 45-year-old Bowles “allegedly lured a man from his house by offering a bogus vehicle test drive.” When the man was gone, Bowles then allegedly stole prescription medications from the man’s home.

Police were called to the home Wednesday evening where they found the man and Bowles. When asked if he had anything concealed on him, Bowles “admitted that he had taken pills from the home.” An officer found Oxycodone and Hydrocodone in Bowles’ pockets.

Bowles told police he was in the man’s home as “part of a fundraising event” for the FCA.

Per the Oklahoman:

Bowles, who identified himself to police as an FCA representative, explained that he was at the home because the owner had agreed to test drive a GMC vehicle as part of a fund-raising event for the organization. Bowles claimed that for every 100 test drives, the Ferguson GMC dealership would make a donation to the FCA.

When contacted, a representative from the GMC dealership told police that the dealership “made a vehicle available to the FCA, but that no test-drive fundraiser existed.”

Before the man took the test drive, he told his wife that he was leaving Bowles alone in their home. She was able to monitor Bowles “using a security live stream on her phone.” When she saw Bowles “wandering through the house,” she contacted her husband and he returned home.

Bowles is not an employee of OU, but has worked in Norman for the last nine years and for the FCA for 21 years total. When reached for comment by The Oklahoman Friday, the FCA said Bowles is still an employee of the organization.

Bowles posted $5,000 bond and was released Wednesday after being booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center.
