Boise State reached into its bag of tricks to pull out a home win over Fresno State Friday night.
Boise led most of the way, but a fumble on a kickoff allowed the Bulldogs to tie the game at 27 with 1:57 to go in the third quarter. On Boise’s next possession, senior quarterback Grant Hedrick led a methodical 17-play, 75-yard yard drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock and culminated in the eventual game-winning score.
On a first-and-goal play from the Fresno 9-yard line, Hedrick took a shotgun snap and handed the ball off Jeremy McNichols, who was in motion pre-snap, McNichols then gave the ball to wideout Thomas Sperbeck on a double reverse. Sperbeck saw a Fresno defender closing and fired off a pass to Hedrick who had ventured out from the backfield toward the end zone.
Hedrick was wide open and hauled the pass in with ease for the go-ahead touchdown, making it 34-27.
The Broncos defense stiffened when Fresno regained possession, forcing two punts and a late interception. Boise added a short field goal and was able to run out the clock with a 37-27 win.
The win improved Boise State’s record to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West while the loss dropped Fresno to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Broncos will host BYU at home next Friday night and Fresno will host Wyoming next Saturday.
