Kiffin 'fortunate' to be on Saban's Bama staff
Lane Kiffin says his hire at Alabama wasn't a new idea
Lane Kiffin at Alabama wasn't something that was first thought of when Kiffin was fired at USC.
On Sunday, Kiffin met with the media for the first time this season. As coach Nick Saban's coordinators don't have regular media availabilities, it'll be before a potential bowl game before Kiffin has an availability again.
When asked about joining Alabama, Kiffin revealed that he first had conversations when Nick Saban joined the school in 2007.
"I don't think being here in December for the bowl practices had anything to do with this," Kiffin said. "Obviously you have to ask Coach Saban that. Knowing him before and just knowing what he's about, I thought this would be a great opportunity if it ever presented itself somehow -- there were actually some conversations a long time ago I guess, that were coach's first year when he first got here actually. Had some conversations on the phone with him about coming here at that time and decided to stay at USC at that time.
"So it was something that I had kind of always thought about because I think the more you can learn from more people obviously, the better you can become as a coach."
Can you imagine how the college football landscape would have changed if Kiffin had gone to Alabama then? Saban was officially hired at Alabama on Jan. 3, 2007. 20 days later, Kiffin was officially introduced as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, so it made sense for him to decline the offer.
But Kiffin was only in Oakland for two seasons before he was the head coach at Tennessee and faced Saban himself. And then it was off to USC to replace Pete Carroll, who he worked under as co-offensive coordinator.
Think of all of the fun we would have missed. Of course, there's no telling what Alabama would have done too. Would the Tide have been as successful as they have been under Saban with Kiffin? Possibly. But it's not a guarantee. Oakland's offer might be one of the most significant things in college football history.

Three Texas players suspended to start the season
As fall camp opens for Texas, three players are suspended.
The university announced Sunday that OT Desmond Harrison, WR Daje Johnson and S Josh Turner are suspended for the beginning of the season, though they will practice with the team. The length of the suspensions will be announced at a later date.
Turner was initially reported to be one of the Longhorns dismissed from the team in July, however it was reported this week that he was still a member of the team. Texas coach Charlie Strong also confirmed that RB Joe Bergeron, DB Chevoski Collins, and RB Jalen Overstreet had all been dismissed. The three players were released from their scholarships.
Harrison played in seven games last season. Johnson had 24 catches in nine games in 2013 and was suspended for the team's game against Texas Tech and did not play against Oregon in the Alamo Bowl. Turner, a senior safety, is a projected starter and had 37 tackles in 12 games last year.
The school also announced that WR Montrel Meanders and WR Kendall Sanders are no longer with the team and LB Kendall Thompson is no longer playing because of injuries. Thompson played in 11 games last season and suffered a concussion against Texas Tech.

North Carolina has an interesting caution sign in the hallway (Photo)
Welcome to our Dr. Saturday feature titled "Random offseason tweet of the day." With real games still weeks away, coaches and players will be tweeting about non-football-related things as the season approaches. In this space, we'll try to find the funniest and goofiest tweets of the day. If you see something, don't hesitate to send it to us.
No, no one puked in the hallway at North Carolina. And it's not freshly mopped, either. As you can see, it's carpeted.
Instead, it's a sign warning defensive backs of the talents of North Carolina's wide receivers.

It's a heck of a way to boost the confidence of your wide receivers, but we have to wonder if North Carolina has a similar sign for cornerbacks. Can the DBs in practices not cover the wide receivers?
While UNC lost TE Eric Ebron to the NFL draft (and Detroit Lions) after 2013, the team does return its next four productive receivers from last season including Ryan Switzer, who tied the NCAA record for punt return TDs in a season last season as a freshman.

Syracuse K Ross Krautman's career is over due to chronic hip condition
Syracuse K Ross Krautman's comeback is over.
On Saturday, Syracuse coach Scott Shafer said that Krautman's career is over because of a chronic hip injury. Krautman missed the final 11 games of the 2013 season but got a waiver for a fifth season to play in 2014. However, that won't be happening.
The hip condition is what sidelined him in 2013 as well.
"We were really hopeful he was going to make it back," Shafer said via Syracuse.com. "It's continued to be a bother to him. He's had a lot of pain with it.
"Ross is a great kid, one of my favorite kids on the team, and I really appreciate the effort he put into his time here at Syracuse and he'll be missed, he really will."
Krautman's was the Orange's starting kicker for his first three seasons at the school. In those three years, Krautman was 48-61 on field goals and 106-109 on extra points. Last year, he was 1-2 on field goals and 4-5 on PATs before the injury. After making 18-19 field goals his freshman season, his field goal percentage declined in subsequent seasons.
Ryan Norton kicked in Krautman's place last year, though he was suspended for the spring game for a violation of team rules.
