QB Jimmy Greenwood reportedly walks on at Texas
Texas has reportedly added walk-on QB Jimmy Greenwood.
Normally, that wouldn't be a story. But Texas could use another QB given its situation. Starter David Ash may never play again after concussions and sophomore Tyrone Swoopes is unproven. Yet he's the most experienced healthy QB on Texas' roster. That counts senior Miles Onyegbule, who moved to QB during spring practice.
Healthy and capable players are at a premium, especially at the QB position.
A rumor on the Orangebloods message board is that Greenwood was approached by the Texas coaching staff about walking on. SB Nation's Burnt Orange Nation couldn't confirm that with a source, but did say Greenwood has walked onto the team.
If Texas did approach Greenwood about joining the team, do you blame them? If you're struggling for quality, amassing quantity is a good way of approaching things. And besides, here's Greenwood's high school tape. Who knows what he could become. He could be just another body, or he could turn into Texas' Kurt Warner. It's a no-lose strategy, no matter who's choice it ultimately was regarding Greenwood joining the team.

Buckeyes' Spence suspended; failed drug test?

Report: Ohio State defensive end Noah Spence failed another drug test
Ohio State defensive end Noah Spence was supposed to make his 2014 debut on Saturday against Kent State, but now it looks like it will not happen.
According to a report from Eleven Warriors, Spence, who was suspended for the first three games of this season and last season’s Orange Bowl, failed a drug test. Spence’s initial suspension stemmed from testing positive for ecstasy before last season’s Big Ten Championship Game.
Spence’s family maintained that the defensive end took the drug “unintentionally” when he was given a drink at a party.
As a result of another failed drug test, Spence’s “status with the team is in jeopardy,” the report says. Additionally, Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch is reporting that Spence is “out indefinitely.”
Ohio State Jr. DE Noah Spence out indefinitely after second violation of Ohio State and Big Ten rules.
— Tim May (@TIM_MAYsports) September 12, 2014
The 6-foot-3, 252-pound Spence, a junior, was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2013 after leading the Buckeyes with eight sacks., good for second-best in the conference. He also registered 52 tackles and 14.5 tackles for loss.
Spence, a native of Harrisburg, Pa., was a five-star recruit in the class of 2012 that Rivals ranked as the ninth-best prospect in the country.

Wagner College coach changes date of game for daughter's wedding
What would you do to be at your child's wedding? Wagner College coach Walt Hameline moved one of his team's football games.
As you can imagine, football coaches aren't too keen on fall weddings. Dates were scarce at the venue Hameline's daughter Kelly wanted to have the wedding at. So with limited options available, she chose September 20.
"How can you do this?" Hameline told the AP when asked of what he told her when informed of the date. "What are you thinking about? It's football season. Ever since she was a baby she went to every football game."
Kelly is 28. Walt has been the coach at Wagner, an FCS school, for 34 years and also serves as the school's athletic director. However, Hameline said there were only one or two dates at the venue. So he went about trying to fix his team's schedule.
"There's always been a golden rule in our family," Walt Hameline said. "Once football season starts, my wife, my family, they go to the games and we do nothing else."
That had to change for the wedding. Sure, the likely alternative would have been for Hameline to miss the game that day to be in attendance. But Wagner was scheduled to play Monmouth on September 20 and thankfully, Hameline had become friends with Monmouth coach Kevin Callahan.
Wagner had an open date on September 13 and as Callahan was building his team's schedule, he was able to push the game up a week, meaning Hameline will be able to coach the game and be at Kelly's wedding.
The incompatibility was averted, and as all parents know, a set schedule isn't too set when it comes to children. Though scheduling conflicts like this don't happen too often.
"We had the flexibility to make it work. I was more than happy to do it," Callahan said.

Man hides in bathroom before proposing to girlfriend in office of Alabama coach Nick Saban (Video)
We’ve all seen in-stadium proposals, but how about a proposal from the office of your favorite college coach? That’s exactly what Drew Clayton pulled off for his now-fiancée, Kayla Posey.
According to Al.com, at the time of the engagement, Posey was finishing up graduate school at Alabama and was working in the Alabama Football office, eventually moving up the ladder to become an assistant of Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban.
With the help of Posey’s co-workers from the football office, Clayton was able to propose to her inside Nick Saban’s office. Best of all, the scene was captured on camera.
Clayton, an alum of Mississippi State, said that he hid in Saban’s private bathroom for about 30 minutes (Saban was out of town) after he replaced a 2012 BCS National Championship ring that was on the coach’s coffee table and replaced it with a custom engagement ring he had designed for Posey.
Meanwhile, Posey’s co-workers told her that a “very important guest” was coming to visit the facilities, so she “needed to shine the rings in Saban’s office.”
That was when she noticed that her ring was in place of one of Saban's rings.
“When I got into the office, one of the national championship boxes was closed,” she said. “I started cleaning it with my dress and I opened the box. I looked at it for a second, and I thought, ‘That’s my ring.’”
That was the moment when Clayton came out from the bathroom and got down on one knee.
“I was never the kind of guy that wanted to ‘go to dinner and go on a walk and then pop the question,’” Clayton said. “I wanted something that was very cool, and something we could always remember.”
Well done, Mr. Clayton. Well done indeed.

Miami DE Muhammed suspended, done for 2014

Miami DE Al-Quadin Muhammad suspended for semester by university
One of the more promising young members of the Miami defense won’t suit up for the Hurricanes this season.
According to the Associated Press, sophomore defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad has been suspended by the university – not the team – for an incident that occurred off-the-field.
The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson is reporting that Muhammad “is being punished for a confrontation with a roommate that left the roommate with a broken nose.” The incident reportedly took place “a while ago” and the decision to suspend Muhammad was made “above the athletic department.”
According to Jackson, Muhammad claimed self-defense, but there were “conflicting statements when witnesses were interviewed.”
Because of the suspension, the program announced that Muhammad is not currently enrolled at the university, meaning he cannot attend classes or participate in athletics, but he can choose to return for the spring semester.
Muhammad has not played for the Hurricanes so far this season, but he has been practicing while “university officials assessed whether he violated Miami’s code of conduct.”
As a true freshman in 2013, the 6-foot-4, 245-pound Muhammad registered eight tackles and two sacks while making appearances in all 13 games for the Hurricanes. Muhammad was a four-star recruit out of Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey and Rivals rated him as the No. 49 overall prospect in the 2013 class.
Since he did not play in a game this season, Muhammad will still have three seasons of eligibility remaining if he chooses to stay at Miami.

Spread Options: Dr. Saturday's week 3 picks against the spread
Fade these picks.
After a horrible week one, we followed it up with a carbon copy 1-9 in week two. You can do the math as to what our season total is. It's gross. Based off the limited evidence available, pick against us and you'll be rich.
Which picks will be wrong in week three?
Toledo at Cincinnati (-9.5), 7 p.m. ET FRIDAY: Here begins the Gunner Kiel era as Cincy's QB. The line here seems low because Cincinnati has had bye weeks the first two weeks. We don't know what the Bearcats are. However, they're a presumptive favorite in the AAC and we do know that Toledo QB Philip Ely is out for the season after tearing his ACL against Missouri. We'll go with a good start for the highly-touted Kiel.
Georgia at South Carolina (UNDER 59.5), 3:30 p.m. ET: As we mentioned yesterday, the games in Columbia, S.C. have tended to be low scoring. However, that doesn't have any tangible bearing on future results. What does is an 80 percent chance of rain. The game was likely going to be the Todd Gurley and Mike Davis show, but the focus could be enhanced and the tempo slowed down if the game is in the midst of a deluge.
Iowa State (+11.5) at Iowa, 3:30 p.m. ET: We're fully aware we went against Iowa State last week and they suprised us. Iowa, meanwhile, beat Ball State by four. This is an intense rivalry game, though the national cachet isn't too strong. Based off the fight Iowa State put up against Kansas State, we're not giving up on the Cyclones just yet and Iowa has been far from impressive.
Arkansas at Texas Tech (-1), 3:30 p.m. ET: Is this the biggest game in Bret Bielema's tenure at Arkansas? We ask this seriously too. After the disaster of last year, going to Texas Tech and winning would be a statement for the program, even if Tech has struggled in its first two wins. However, we're going to take the home team in a virtual pick'em game.
Kansas at Duke (-14), 3:30 p.m. ET: Kansas looked like a competent football team in the first half against Southeast Missouri State on Saturday. Then the second half came and the Jayhawks had to hold off a rally. Then during the week, Kansas coach Charlie Weis said his players should shut up instead of commenting about the crowd or the team's focus. Duke isn't the team that went to the ACC Championship game last year, but it's hard to be optimistic about the Jayhawks.
Illinois at Washington (-13), 4 p.m. ET: What a difference Cyler Miles makes. Washington's QB was suspended against Hawaii and the Huskies offense struggled in a 17-16 win. With Miles back, Washington scored 59 against Eastern Washington. There's just one problem, however. Washington's defense gave up 52. It's why the O/U on this game is so high (65), but we'll take a bounceback game from the Washington defense. EWU's offense is better than many FBS programs' offenses.
Purdue vs. Notre Dame (-27.5), 7:30 p.m. ET: Did anyone expect the beatdown Notre Dame put on Michigan? Well, the Wolverines are tiers above where Purdue is. The Boilermakers lost at home on Saturday to Central Michigan. The Irish may not shut out Purdue, but it's not going to be pretty. (The game is at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.)
Kentucky (+18.5) at Florida, 7:30 p.m. ET: We're not going to side with Kentucky RB Jojo Kemp and think the Wildcats are going to beat the Gators and end a 27-game losing streak, but we're buying an improved Kentucky team that can hang around with Florida. The Gators ultimately win the game, but it's not a blowout. Kentucky ends the streak next year in Lexington.
Tennessee (+21) at Oklahoma, 8 p.m. ET: Each team is 1-1 against the spread by a hair. Tennessee just msised covering against Arkansas State last week while Oklahoma missed against Louisiana Tech in week one. We're going to roll with the Volunteers here. Much like Kentucky, it's not an upset bid, but Butch Jones' team and its myriad of freshman should have the confidence to not be intimidated at Memorial Stadium.
UCLA (-7) vs. Texas, 8 p.m. ET: This is an incredibly enticing line on the surface. Texas has the cachet of its brand recognition working in its favor while UCLA has had two single-digit victories to open the season against Virginia and Memphis. But we're going with the Bruins because of the incredible advantage at QB. UCLA may not steamroll Texas like BYU did, but it'll finally cover a point spread.

After win over Northwestern, a Northern Illinois newspaper ad challenges Illinois (Photo)
This has to sting, Northwestern.
Less than a week after Northern Illinois beat the Wildcats, this ad supporting Northern Illinois from the school's alumni association issued a challenge to Illinois in Friday's Chicago Tribune.
The full-page ad from Northern Illinois in today’s Chicago Tribune sports section. #NIU http://ift.tt/1m05j0R
— Brian Hamilton (@BrianHamiltonSI) September 12, 2014
It's hard to argue with a little bit of crowing from the Huskies. Northwestern and Illinois haven't exactly been powerhouses recently and NIU is the Illinois school that's most recently been to a BCS Bowl. The Huskies lost in the 2013 Orange Bowl to Florida State. Illinois last BCS appearance was the 2007 Rose Bowl and Northwestern went to the Rose Bowl in 1995 before there was even a BCS.
(And this has to sting for Big Ten fans too. After a horrible game week for the conference, two of its schools are getting trash talked by a MAC school.)
Unfortunately, NIU won't get a chance to go for in-state supremacy anytime soon unless it's matched up in a bowl game against Illinois. (Which doesn't seem likely.) The Huskies aren't currently on Illinois' nonconference schedule in the future. Maybe this ad will make a future game happen?

What to Watch, Week 3: The doldrums of the nonconference schedule
While the first two weeks of the season offered a plethora of exciting games that likely will have an effect on the college football playoff down the road, this weekend isn’t nearly as exciting.
Sure, we have the SEC showdown between South Carolina and Georgia, but the rest of the schedule is bit of a dud.
That’s OK, though. We needed a minute to catch our breath after an exciting two weeks and this week will allow several teams that either lost those big games or have had rough starts to the season, a chance to rebound.
With that said, here’s a look back at what you might have missed in Week 2:
Apparently Notre Dame had this big win against Michigan or something that elicited this response from Irish defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder.
Stanford had some offensive issues against USC and suffered a rare early-season loss.
Meanwhile, rival Oregon had a come-from-behind win against Michigan State to become the new “it” team in the college football.
Speaking of the Big Ten, here’s how a lot of people are feeling after the conference’s rough two weeks to begin the season.
But few programs are sadder than Vanderbilt, which has been outscored 78-10 in its first two games against Temple and Ole Miss. So, coach Derek Mason, what has gone right for your team?
Mason: I thought our punting was excellent. In terms of our execution on offense and defense, it needs to be better.
— VandyFootball (@VandyFootball) September 9, 2014
I feel like this song is playing on a loop throughout the Vanderbilt football facility.
All right, I think that’s everything. Let’s look ahead to this week:
Game of the week:
No. 6 Georgia vs. No. 24 South Carolina, 3:30 p.m. ET
When the SEC schedule came out, this game was definitely circled as one of the more entertaining early-season contests. Of course, that was before South Carolina laid an egg against Texas A&M in the season opener. Still, this game could go a long way in determining an SEC East that has a lot of contenders who could turn out to be pretenders in the next couple weeks. Among those might be South Carolina, which probably can’t weather another SEC loss this early in the year and still come out with better than a nine-win season. As for Georgia, it needs to prove that running back Todd Gurley wasn’t just a one-hit wonder and that he has the durability to not only take the Bulldogs to an SEC title, but the College Football Playoff. And he should have his opportunities against a very suspect South Carolina defense.
Game to watch:
Tennessee at No. 4 Oklahoma, 8 p.m. ET
No one thought this would be a good game before the season started and, in all honesty, it probably won’t be when it’s all said and done. The key for Tennessee will be getting out of the first quarter with minimal damage. The Sooners have outscored their opponents 42-0 in the first quarter and 62-3 in the first half. Yeah, Louisiana Tech and Tulsa probably aren’t as good as the Vols, but this is a Sooner team that likes to put its opponents in a very deep hole. If the Vols can weather the first half, it might have a chance. But in Norman, with a fired-up crowd and Tennessee rocking a youth-heavy squad it might be a tall order.
Also check out…
UCF at No. 20 Missouri, 12 p.m. ET
This game is interesting because no one knows what to make of either of these teams so far this season. UCF lost on a last-second field goal to Penn State in Ireland and Missouri has defeated South Dakota State and Toledo. This will be a good chance to see how good the Missouri offense is against a tough defense like UCF. Similarly, UCF quarterback Justin Holman came into the second half of that Penn State game and re-energized the Knights. He will be a handful for a Missouri defense that hasn’t really been tested so far this season. If anything, this game should be one of the more entertaining choices among the early games.
Don't waste your time with:
No. 12 UCLA vs. Texas, 8:15 p.m. ET
Have you watched these teams play? Bad offensive lines and inconsistent quarterback play. Even the defenses, which provided a glimmer of hope in the first game, looked terrible in their second games. Even if this game did end up being a good game, it will either be a blowout as neither defense shows up, or a “defensive struggle” as neither offense shows up. And besides, Oklahoma-Tennessee will be a much better show.
Keep an eye on:
Hutson Mason, QB, Georgia
Mason didn’t have to be great in the season opener against Clemson because running back Todd Gurley — and the rest of the running game — took over. But he might not get so lucky against a South Carolina defense that appears to be better despite giving up a season’s worth of yards to Texas A&M in the season opener. And if that game taught Georgia anything, it’s that the passing game is Mason’s if he can take it. This is his first year starting, so we don’t quite know what he’s going to be longterm to the Georgia offense. This will be a good chance to find out.
Upset alert:
East Carolina (+10) at Virginia Tech
This sets up as the classic letdown game after the Hokies defeated Ohio State last week. East Carolina is a decent team. It gave South Carolina an early scare and has consistently played its in-state Power Five foes tough. Each of the past two meetings between these teams has been decided by a touchdown. So, while Virginia Tech will probably win this game, I think the Pirates will cover.

Florida coach Will Muschamp calls into radio show as 'Bill from Gainesville' (Audio)
Like a lot of coaches, Florida head coach Will Muschamp participates in a weekly radio show where he can take calls and questions from fans. Thursday night, Gators athletic director Jeremy Foley filled in for Muschamp on Gator Hotline and he got an interesting call from “Bill from Gainesville,” who sounded rather familiar.
Take a listen.
It was a pretty funny moment. Muschamp, or “Bill,” sorry, goes back and forth with Foley. They each get in some lighthearted jabs, with Foley saying that he falls asleep during Muschamp’s appearances on the show, then Muschamp had to get in a little dig about Foley’s favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox.
During last year’s 4-8 campaign, Muschamp certainly faced some heat from Gators fans. Foley acknowledged that and said it was much easier to answer to the fans after last Saturday’s 65-0 win over Eastern Michigan.
The Gators will look to get to 2-0 in this weekend’s SEC opener against Kentucky.
