UCLA takes down Arizona 17-7

If you're looking for order in the Pac-12 South, UCLA's win over Arizona Saturday night didn't help your quest.

Brett Hundley passed for 189 yards and ran for 131 more as the Bruins stifled Arizona and moved into a four-way tie in the loss column for second-place in the division, joining the Wildcats, USC and the loser of the game between Utah and Arizona State.

As UCLA accumulated 461 total yards of offense, Arizona sputtered. The Wildcats had just 255 yards and were out of sync the entire night, especially in the passing game. QB Anu Solomon completed less than half of his passes and had a hard time going downfield consistently. He finished 18-47 for 175 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Though you can argue Arizona's passing struggles were intensified by the inability to run the football. The Wildcats finished with 31 carries for just 80 yards.

Oh, and there were special teams miscues too. Casey Skowron missed one field goal and with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter had a chance to pull Arizona within 17-10. However, his second field goal attempt was blocked, snuffing out any chance at a win for Arizona.

In addition to Hundley's 131 rushing yards, RB Paul Perkins added 78 yard and a touchdown and went over 1,000 yards for the season.

Spurrier explains OT loss in 54 seconds

Steve Spurrier's press conference was very brief after loss to Tennessee (Video)

After South Carolina squandered a 14-point fourth quarter lead with just a few minutes to go in its 45-42 overtime loss to Tennessee on Saturday, we anticipated some memorable quotes from South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier.

And, well, the press conference was memorable. But it may be for what Spurrier didn't say rather than what he actually did.

You can watch the press conference above, but don't worry, you don't need to get up and make a cup of coffee to enjoy during it. Unless you drink coffee, really, really, really fast.

The quotable coach was clearly frustrated by his team's performance and didn't take questions from the media after the game. After a rambling statement, Spurrier ended it with "So I don't need to take any questions. You guys watched it and I just need to get out of here. Thanks."

Tennessee scored with 1:50 remaining in the fourth quarter to cut South Carolina's lead to 42-35. Then after getting the ball back, the Volunteers scored with 11 seconds left to tie it after a 9-play, 85-yard drive.

Both teams combined for 1.270 yards of total offense. South Carolina, which started the season in the top 10, is now 4-5 and 2-5 in the SEC.

Oregon blows out Stanford behind Heisman-worthy performance from Marcus Mariota

Stanford has never been kind to Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Heisman frontrunner put an end to that Saturday night.

After Stanford ruined undefeated seasons for Oregon in the last two years , Mariota and the fifth-ranked Ducks featured a balanced, high-powered offensive attack to finally get over the hump in a blowout 45-16 home win. Mariota led the way, passing for 258 yards and two scores while also running for 85 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground. In all, the Ducks racked up 525 yards of offense – 267 rushing, 258 passing – en route to a big win.

The Cardinal defense stifled Oregon’s spread attack in years past, but the Ducks moved the ball with ease from the start. Though Stanford was able to hang around early with two field goals, two Mariota scores (one passing, one rushing) and a Thomas Tyner touchdown run allowed the Ducks to jump out to a 21-6 lead early in the second.

An Oregon field goal pushed the lead to 24-6, but Stanford was able to get in the end zone and cut the lead to 24-13 at halftime via a one-yard Patrick Skov touchdown run.

After Stanford’s Kevin Hogan and Mariota traded interceptions to start the second half, the Cardinal got within one possession, 26-14, with Jordan Williamson’s third field goal of the game. That was the closest Stanford would get.

Oregon’s next drive culminated with another Tyner touchdown run. This one was from 21-yards out and features a video game-like spin move inside the 10. Hogan fumbled on Stanford’s next drive, and it was all Oregon from then on out.

The win improves the Ducks to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-12 while also giving Mariota, the current Heisman favorite, a coveted win over Stanford. Oregon was ranked No. 1 in the country when the Ducks fell 17-14 to Stanford in 2012. Last year, the Ducks were undefeated again and ranked No. 3, but a hobbled Mariota and the Ducks fell to the fifth-ranked Cardinal 26-20.

With Ole Miss losing to Auburn Saturday night, the Ducks may be able to slide into the Top 4 of next week’s College Football Playoff rankings. A trip to Salt Lake City to square off with No. 17 Utah is next on the schedule.

Meanwhile, Stanford drops to a disappointing 5-4 with the loss.

Last-second field goal keeps TCU in the playoff hunt

TCU’s contest against West Virginia was not the Horned Frogs best game.

The poor weather combined with the hostile Morgantown, W.Va., crowd made for a very sloppy game. But somehow, the Horned Frogs managed to escape with a 31-30 win thanks to a 37-yard field goal from Jaden Oberkron as time expired.

While this game was touted to be a offensive showdown, it was the defense that made the difference for TCU. The Horned Frogs forced five turnovers in the game and three three-and-outs in the fourth quarter to overcome a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit.

Offensively, however, the Horned Frogs looked pedestrian.

After putting up more than 80 points against Texas Tech last week, TCU struggled to get any fluidity in its passing game. Heisman hopeful quarterback Trevone Boykin completed just 12-of-30 passes for 166 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 49 yards and a score. The Horned Frogs best offense came on the ground, led by B.J. Catalon, who had 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Still, that kind of offensive performance was part for the course for teams against West Virginia’s defense. It also made Baylor and Oklahoma State look pretty pedestrian and both of those teams lost. So, TCU should probably consider itself lucky.

The Mountaineers have to be the best three-loss team in the country with losses to Alabama, Oklahoma and now TCU, but it’s chances of winning the Big 12 title now drop considerably. Still, coach Dana Holgorsen should be commended for turning this team from a perceived cellar dweller into one of the most feared in the conference.

As for TCU, things don’t get any easier with a big game against Kansas State looming next week. While this contest will look good in the eyes of the College Football Playoff committee, all that good will could be gone with a flub against the Wildcats.

Hidden ball trick play helps Indiana State beat Missouri State (Video)

Indiana State reached into its bag of tricks during a home game against Missouri State Saturday afternoon.

After Missouri State went ahead 18-17 with a field goal with 42 seconds to go, the Sycamores were set to receive the kickoff. Instead of kicking it deep, MSU went with a shorter, squib kick and the ball was fielded by ISU running back Dimitri Taylor at the 28-yard line.

Taylor then immediately huddled together with four teammates and flawlessly executed the hidden ball trick. The ball somehow ended up in the hands of Aaron Killebrew, who took off for 32 yards to give the Sycamores great field position at the MSU 38-yard line.

The ISU offense moved the ball down to the 20-yard line and Eric Heidorn booted the game-winning 38-yard field goal.

The win improved Indiana State’s record to 6-3 on the season.

Washington State QB Connor Halliday carted off field (GIF)

Washington State’s Connor Halliday, the nation’s leader in passing yards, went down with what appears to be a serious right leg injury in the first half against USC.

The senior dropped back and hit Vince Mayle for a 14-yard gain, only to be hit and spun awkwardly by Trojans defensive end Leonard Williams.

Halliday was immediately writhing on the ground and yelling in pain. It looked like an air cast was placed on his leg before being carted off the field.

If the injury is as serious as it appears, it could end Halliday’s career.

Entering the game, Halliday led the country with 3,833 yards passing and 32 touchdown passes. Earlier in the season, he set an FBS record with 734 yards passing against Cal.

With Halliday out, redshirt freshman Luke Falk came on in relief at quarterback for the Cougars.

Florida scores touchdown against Georgia on fake field goal (GIF)

Maybe one of Florida's best offensive plays is the fake field goal?

The Gators tied Georgia in the first half at 7-7 thanks to a nifty run by WR Michael McNeely.

As you can see from the play, it was a designed fake and the Florida line executed the blocking perfectly. Georgia was not expecting the play and McNeely made a couple of cuts and was in the end zone from 21 yards out.

Later in the second quarter, the Gators got a 44-yard run from Kelvin Taylor to set up his 2-yard touchdown run for a 14-7 lead over the Bulldogs, who are the leaders in the SEC East.

It's clear that Florida's game plan in the first half has been to run the football. The Gators have run 33 plays and 28 have been runs.

Big 12 refs missed obvious (and violent) facemask penalty in TCU-WVU game (GIF)

The pivotal Big 12 matchup between TCU and West Virginia got a little chippy early after TCU defensive end Josh Carraway tackled West Virginia quarterback Clint Trickett by his facemask.

The strangest part of this open-field tackle?

There was no flag.

Nope. Nothing. Not even a second glance.

In the eyes of the Big 12 refs, this was a completely legal play and not the 15-yard facemask penalty it deserved.

The refs in the Pac-12 tend to get a lot of heat for some of their poor calls, but this one was so obvious, it’s hard to believe it was missed.

East Carolina damages New Year's bowl hopes with disastrous loss at Temple

Does Marshall now control East Carolina's New Year's bowl hopes?

Entering Saturday, the Pirates, despite a loss to South Carolina, were ahead of the undefeated Thundering Herd in the College Football Playoff Committee's standings. But that may change after East Carolina committed five turnovers – all fumbles – in a 20-10 loss to Temple.

Why is the spot in the standings so important? Well, the highest-ranked conference-winning team outside of a Power-Five conference receives an automatic berth to either the Cotton, Fiesta or Peach Bowl. Marshall's porous strength of schedule put the Thundering Herd behind ECU in the first rankings issued on Tuesday.

But now that ECU has two losses, the advantage could be negated. Plus, there's now five American Athletic Conference teams with a loss. Any advantage ECU had in its conference is now gone.

The Pirates' first fumble of the game turned into points for Temple. RB Breon Allen fumbled in the first quarter and the ball was picked up by Temple's Tavon Young, who sprinted 63 yards for a touchdown.

On ECU's next drive, Allen fumbled again. Yeah, it was ugly. If you had no idea who the team was, you would have taken a look at ECU's drive chart and thought the Pirates were a one or two-win football team. ECU had the ball 13 times and its first 11 drives included five fumbles, three punts, a turnover on downs, a missed field goal and a made field goal.

ECU's touchdown didn't come until there were two minutes left and the Pirates trailed 20-3.

QB Shane Carden was bottled up throughout the day by Temple's defense. Carden finished 24-41 for 217 yards passing and top target Justin Hardy had just four catches for 35 yards. Marshall was off on Saturday. With the Thundering Herd's toughest remaining game being against Western Kentucky, it could be an incredibly costly loss for East Carolina.

Not much has gone right for Northwestern Saturday afternoon against Iowa, but Wildcats’ wide receiver Mike McHugh hauled in one of the best catches of the year.

Trailing 38-7 in the third quarter, Northwestern quarterback Trevor Siemian looked for McHugh inside the 5-yard line. The ball was thrown high and toward the sideline, but that was no problem for the 6-foot-3 McHugh.

As you can see, he caught the pass with his right hand and managed to get his left foot inbounds for a 24-yard gain.

Here’s a better look:

Maryland captains refuse to shake hands with Penn State's captains (Video)

Maryland picked up a penalty against Penn State before the game even started.

ESPN’s broadcast showed a handful of Maryland players jawing at the Penn State players at the 50-yard line prior to kickoff where some shoves were exchanged, resulting in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Then, when it was time for the coin toss, Penn State’s captains went to shake hands with the Terps’ captains. They refused.

The 15-yard penalty against Maryland was assessed on the opening kickoff, which gave Penn State solid field position for its first drive that culminated in a field goal.

Now that Maryland is in the Big Ten, it is looking to establish a rivalry against with the Nittany Lions.

The animosity shown pregame certainly can’t hurt that effort.
