Maryland picked up a penalty against Penn State before the game even started.
ESPN’s broadcast showed a handful of Maryland players jawing at the Penn State players at the 50-yard line prior to kickoff where some shoves were exchanged, resulting in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Then, when it was time for the coin toss, Penn State’s captains went to shake hands with the Terps’ captains. They refused.
The 15-yard penalty against Maryland was assessed on the opening kickoff, which gave Penn State solid field position for its first drive that culminated in a field goal.
Now that Maryland is in the Big Ten, it is looking to establish a rivalry against with the Nittany Lions.
The animosity shown pregame certainly can’t hurt that effort.
