Five-star recruit CeCe Jefferson takes back FSU commitment, claims teammates took his phone
CeCe Jefferson, a Rivals.com five-star recruit in the class of 2015, took to Twitter on Monday to announce his verbal commitment to Florida State. The decision was considered a bit of a surprise for the No. 12 prospect in the country, who is thought to be favoring Florida and Ole Miss more than the Seminoles.
Five-star DE and #OleMiss target. RT @cecejeferson7: Just commited to Fsu, thank you lord for the opportunity. #GoNoles
— Davis Potter (@DPotterOE) November 3, 2014
Fans of those the Gators and Rebels could exhale a few minutes after the initial tweet (which was deleted) was sent. In a follow-up tweet, Jefferson claimed his teammates got ahold of his phone and sent the tweet. He added that his official commitment would wait until national signing day on Feb. 4.
I swear my teamates play entirely too much, I have not committed, im commiting on National Signing day!
— Beowulf (@cecejeferson7) November 3, 2014
Jefferson, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound defensive end from Glen St. Mary, Fla., is considered the second-best strongside defensive end in the country and the fifth-best prospect in the state of Florida by Rivals.com.
In addition to considering Florida, Ole Miss and Florida State, Jefferson visited Alabama Oct. 17 and also has visits to LSU, Georgia, and UCLA scheduled before the end of the year.

Les Miles would like to take a moment to remind you of your civic duty
Les Miles, as he is wont to do, issued a public service announcement Monday — get out and vote.
Miles used the opening statement of his weekly press conference to remind everyone of their civic duty and to remind folks that Election Day was different than other days lest there be any confusion.
"Just recognize that it's Election Day coming up, where all those model citizens will get off and take care of their duties to their country," Miles said. "This is not Columbus Day; this is not just for the Italians. This is certainly not St. Paddy's; it's not just for the Irish. It's for all of those who have the ability to vote in our country, so get out and do that please."
A year ago, Miles took a moment out of his press conference to remind us all the value of Columbus Day, and he borrowed some of that message for Monday’s opening statement.
Here at Dr. Saturday, we commend Miles for being a walking, talking date book. If Miles didn’t keep reminding us of these important events, we as a college football nation might very well be lost.

Tweet from WSU QB Connor Halliday after career-ending leg injury will break your heart
Lost in the shuffle of the drama of Saturday’s evening games was the season-ending broken leg suffered by Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday during the first quarter of Saturday’s 44-17 loss to USC.
Halliday, the nation’s leader in passing touchdowns, passing yards and completions per game, had his right leg caught under USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams after completing a 14-yard pass on third down.
The injury actually ended Halliday’s Washington State career.
After coach Mike Leach broke the news, Halliday’s Twitter feed was filled with well-wishes from friends and fans, but one response from Halliday stood out more than others.
@PappaMeighen 22 years of hard work I was 3 god damn games away from my dream 3 freakin games away from being drafted and living my dream
— Connor Halliday (@c_halliday12) November 2, 2014
Halliday was lightly-recruited pro-style quarterback from Spokane, Wash. The Cougars were his only major offer and in four years with the program, especially the past two, he became a must-watch player even if his team was a less-than-desirable draw.
While he’s only been to one bowl game — a 48-45 loss to Colorado State in last year’s New Mexico Bowl — he leaves Washington State as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks (record-wise) in college football history.
He owns a multitude of Washington State records. Last season, he tied the NCAA Division I record for completions and broke Drew Brees’ NCAA Division I record for pass attempts. He tied NCAA bowl game record with six touchdown passes.
The way his career ended was sad. He was a good player, a good kid, who deserved to go out by setting as many records as he could in what was already another lost season for the Cougars.
Still, if his Twitter feed was any indication of the impact he had on Washington State during his time with the program, it’s clear the fans appreciated his work even if it didn’t result in a lot of wins.
And if Halliday has one thing going for him — other than his arm strength — it’s his toughness. Throughout his career, Halliday has played through a multitude of injuries, including a lacerated liver against Utah, which ultimately required hospitalization. The road back from a broken leg will be difficult, but it’s not something he can’t overcome.
However, Halliday’s future in football is uncertain. Even before the injury, there were questions about whether his style of play could translate at the NFL level. Leach-coached quarterbacks have had a tough time making the transition to the NFL game and while some have gotten some looks, few have stuck. Former Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel, Halliday’s predecessor, is on the Buffalo Bills practice squad.
It’s also unknown whether Halliday’s leg will heal before the NFL draft and whether he’ll be able to either participate in the NFL combine (if he gets an invite) or a pro day.
It would be a shame if he didn’t get an opportunity to at least show he’s worthy of an NFL roster spot.

UCLA QB Brett Hundley admits pressure of improving for NFL affected early season performance
UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley took his time in the offseason before opting to return to school instead of heading to the NFL. He still had his accuracy and decision making to work on, plus he wanted to lead the Bruins to a national title.
Having lost two games so far, it’s unlikely the Bruins will reach the College Football Playoff, and Hundley admitted after Saturday’s win over No. 12 Arizona that the perceived flaws in his game affected how he has played so far this season. He hadn’t been running the ball as much, but that changed against the Wildcats when he racked up 131 yards on 24 attempts.
“I think at the beginning of the season, there was a lot of thought, and I think it even got to me as far as not to run,” Hundley said, per the Los Angeles Times. “But I think after last week, I really reflected on all this stuff. Everything happens for a reason, and for me, it’s all about winning games now. Focusing on the now. Doing that has gotten me to this point anyway, so why change? At this point, it’s all about winning and doing what I have to do as a quarterback to lead the team to wins.”
Hundley, a redshirt junior, conceded that he “changed his game” in attempts to improve his draft stock. Instead, he said worrying about how he will project at the next level negatively impacted his performance. Additionally, Hundley said friends and family have noticed differences in his body language because he is afraid of getting hurt or making a mistake.
“I think that’s part of it, when you want to go to the next level, you want to show people you can do things,” Hundley said. “Sometimes it changed your game, honestly. People don’t realize how much pressure there is, but at the end of the day, when you think about what got you to this point, you have to stay on your foundation. Even though there’s a future ahead that you want to get to, you cant focus on that, honestly, because it will really throw your game off.”
The win over Arizona improved UCLA’s record to 7-2. Hundley wants to keep the team’s momentum going and the NFL side of things will come with time.
“I know what got me here, and that’s running the football, throwing the football and having a good time. And not focusing on all that other stuff,” Hundley said. “You have to tell yourself that other stuff will come, all that other stuff will take care of itself.”

Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs receives standing ovation in class for 5 TD performance
Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs made his first start of the season over the weekend and had a career day, throwing for 301 yards and two touchdowns while also running for 166 yards and three more scores. Dobbs’ effort helped the Volunteers pull out a comeback 45-42 win over South Carolina in overtime.
His classmates certainly noticed his effort and gave Dobbs a standing ovation in class on Monday.

Highlight of my day: standing ovation for Dobbs in circuits class
— Jessie Barb (@jess_barb) November 3, 2014
We wrote about Dobbs a few times last year for his demanding class schedule in the aerospace engineering program, as well as his ability to recite the first 28 digits of pi, so he’s impressive in the classroom as well as on the field.
Tennessee head coach Butch Jones planned to redshirt the sophomore this season, but he was forced to put Dobbs in last week against Alabama due to an injury to senior Justin Worley. Dobbs started the Vols’ last four games in 2013, so it wasn’t the first time he saw the field, but Saturday’s performance was certainly the best of his young career.
Dobbs should continue to start for the 4-5 Vols moving forward. Three games remain on the schedule – home games with Kentucky and Missouri and a road game at Missouri.
Can Dobbs lead the Vols to bowl eligibility?

Auburn's Kris Frost says Laquon Treadwell's strength and momentum led to injury
Auburn linebacker Kris Frost said Laquon Treadwell’s strength and momentum contributed to the unfortunate injury that left Treadwell with a broken leg and a dislocated ankle.
Frost told media he felt fortunate to be able to catch up to Treadwell before he reached the end zone, but at the point where he caught him, the only thing he could do to stop his momentum was grab him by the waist and try to yank him back.
While it worked and Treadwell fumbled the ball before reaching the end zone, it also pulled Treadwell’s leg underneath both players, which resulted in the season-ending injury.
“He’s a strong guy and all that momentum he had moving towards the end zone, just really tried to do everything I can to stop him from going into the end zone,” Frost said. “That’s all I’m thinking about, just trying to get him on the ground the best way I can. And with him being as strong as he is, I did kinda have to dig in and try to lean back on him and pull him back. And I pulled him back by the waist and unfortunately that’s when he kinda fell back on it and I kinda rolled up on him.
“And then when he fell to the side, I felt the ball, I felt I kinda hit the ball, but I didn’t know the ball was out actually until I saw Cass (Cassanova McKinzy) jump on it.”
Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze told media Monday that Treadwell’s recovery should be about four months and that he might be ready to play again by spring football.
Frost said the team was praying for Treadwell’s recovery and that he would reach out to him when he felt like the time was right. He said he’s been getting a few hate tweets from Ole Miss fans, but he’s not sorry for the way he approached the play.
“Really just, that’s the nature of the game,” Frost said. “You know, it’s unfortunate that things happened that way. I hope that he has a speedy recovery.”

Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah has MCL sprain, could return for Wisconsin game
Nebraska fans breathed a collective sign of relief when learning that star running back Ameer Abdullah’s knee injury was not considered to be serious.
Per the Omaha World-Herald, head coach Bo Pelini said the injury, which occurred on the second offensive drive of the Huskers’ 35-14 win over Purdue, was a “mild” MCL sprain. The injury also includes a contusion where he was hit on the left knee. Additionally, in a bit of good timing, the Huskers (8-1, 4-1 Big Ten) have a bye this week, which will give Abdullah the ability to possibly heal up without missing any gametime.
“We’re very optimistic,” Pelini said of the chance Abdullah would be ready to play at Wisconsin on Nov. 15. “I’m optimistic. I can’t say for sure.”
Pelini said the injury was serious enough that he was unable to return to the game. Without him, Imani Cross and Terrell Newby put up a combined 108 yards with an average of 3.72 yards per carry – far below the 6.7 yard average Abdullah has put up so far this season.
A Heisman Trophy candidate, Abdullah led the country in rushing yards – 1,249 – coming into the Purdue game. Pelini would obviously like him back for a Wisconsin (6-2, 3-1 Big Ten) game where first place in the Big Ten West could be on the line. If he’s not ready to go, Pelini has confidence that the rest of the offense can pick up the slack in Abdullah’s absence.
“Ameer’s a great player, but he’s not Superman,” Pelini said. “I don’t think that affected our other guys. If anything, it should make them want to rise up and play that much harder and rally around each other when a great player goes down”

Chris Davis' 'Kick Six' Auburn helmet sells for more than $47K at auction
The helmet Auburn kick returner Chris Davis wore during the infamous Kick Six against Alabama last year reportedly sold at auction for $47,190, according to ESPN.
Ken Goldin, the owner of GoldinAuctions.com, confirmed an Auburn fan won the auction, but didn’t reveal a name.
"This helmet, from one of the most historic and notable plays in college football goes down as one of the highest-priced pieces of collegiate sports memorabilia ever sold, and certainly the most valuable that has been auctioned from a player or event that occurred within the past 20 years," Goldin told ESPN.
During last year’s Iron Bowl, Davis fielded a missed 57-yard field goal and returned it 109 yards for the game-winning touchdown as time expired. The win not only gave the Tigers a win over their rival, it also solidified a spot in the SEC title game.
Harris, who autographed the helmet, also wore it in the SEC Championship and the BCS National Championship.
According to ESPN, Davis’ helmet appears to be the highest-selling helmet ever at auction. Earlier this year, an Archie Griffin game-used Ohio State helmet from his 1974 and 1975 Heisman-winning season sold for $28,680.

Ole Miss WR Laquon Treadwell posts positive message on Instagram following grisly injury (Photo)
Laquon Treadwell’s season ended in sad, grisly and disappointing fashion on Saturday when he suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle in the final minutes of a loss against Auburn.
While the Ole Miss community mourned Treadwell’s injury, the sophomore receiver tried to remain upbeat by using Instagram to post an inspirational message next to him being carted off the field.
“Not everything in life is set out to be easy, & not every plan we have for ourselves work out in our favor. Even the greatest & most powerful people we praise or look up to have huge downfalls, but it takes a strong person & an even stronger mindset to prepare for that major come back. It didn't kill me, so watch as I become stronger. Thanks for the prayers everyone, God bless.”
Treadwell was injured while he was trying to score what could have been the game-winning touchdown. Auburn linebacker Kris Frost pulled Treadwell backward by his jersey and Treadwell’s leg and ankle rolled underneath him. Treadwell dropped the ball before he crossed the goal line and Auburn fell on it in the end zone.
The loss was Ole Miss’ second and likely knocks the Rebels out of contention for the College Football Playoff.

Florida's Mike McNeely grocery store shift was a bit different day after TD on fake FG
Florida wide receiver Mike McNeely lived every walk-on’s dream on Saturday afternoon when he scored a touchdown in the Gators’ 38-20 upset win over Georgia. McNeely, who holding for a field goal, took the snap in the second quarter and took off 21 yards to the end zone to tie the score 7-7.
Twenty-four hours later, McNeely had a different uniform on – as a cashier and bagger at a Publix supermarket in Gainesville.
Gators fake kick hero Mike McNeely working at Publix today as scheduled. http://ift.tt/1DNkLA1
— Jeff Barlis (@JeffBarlisESPN) November 2, 2014
ESPN.com’s Jeff Barlis was on the scene with McNeely during his usual 1 to 8:45 p.m. Sunday shift. This one was a bit different than usual.
McNeely took photos with fans and signed autographs on tickets, pictures and even receipts. He gave some high-fives and some hugs and, of course, bagged groceries, helped customers to their cars and collected shopping carts.
McNeely, a fifth-year senior who plays primarily on special teams, said his first career touchdown worked exactly like it did in practice.
“It was a great call,” McNeely said. “It was drawn up perfectly. The guys blocked. I know Tevin (Westbrook) had a great climb and Clay (Burton) kicked out. (Kicker) Frankie (Velez) faking helped. All the linemen blocking, it was perfect. All I had to do was run. It worked just like it did in practice, so I knew where to hit it.”
Head coach Will Muschamp praised McNeely, who was put on scholarship in preseason camp, after the game. Muschamp, himself a walk-on at Georgia during his playing career, appreciates what McNeely brings to the team.
“Walk-on or scholarship, it doesn’t matter to me. The guy is a good football player,” Muschamp said. “I mean, he’s earned his scholarship now. But he’s a hard-playing, quick, good athlete. I mean, he can line up and play receiver as well as some of our guys. That’s the type of guy he is. I didn’t even blink putting him back there.”
McNeely said he will continue to work at Publix until he begins studying at UF’s medical school next August. But for now, he’s focused on Florida, now 4-3, stringing some wins together.
“It’s great to get the ball rolling in the right direction. I’m looking forward to going back to work on Monday,” he said.
