Texas Tech defensive coordinator says former coach is giving away signals
Texas Tech interim defensive coordinator Mike Smith says the man he replaced – Matt Wallerstedt – is giving Texas Tech’s defensive signals to opponents.
“They have been passed around. I know other coaches have called and our signals have been passed around the whole time. All I know is karma’s a bad deal, “ Smith told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on Monday.
Wallerstedt resigned as Texas Tech’s defensive coordinator due to “personal reasons” on September 18, less than a week after the Red Raiders’ defense gave up 438 rushing yards in a 49-28 home loss to Arkansas.
During Saturday’s 42-30 loss to Oklahoma, Texas Tech staff members were seen holding towels around the coach giving defensive signals to players in order to shield signals from OU coaches in the press box. TTU head coach Kliff Kingsbury said after the game that the team’s signals had been “passed around” after “the situation we had earlier in the year.”
According to the Avalance-Journal, Kingsbury was referring to Wallerstedt’s resignation.
“I don’t want to get into what’s going on with all that, but it’s not right and, to me, it’s not fair to the kids,” Smith said. “So if that’s how that person wants to handle business, they can handle business that way. I sure hope I don’t run into him anytime soon.”
The Red Raiders’ defense has struggled mightily through 10 games, ranking No. 123 (out of 125 FBS teams) in scoring defense (41.6 points per game), No. 120 in rush defense (259.4 yards per game), No. 119 in total defense (503.6 yards per game) and No. 92 in pass defense (244.2 yards per game).
Smith, who was hired as co-defensive coordinator by Kingsbury prior to the 2013 season along with Wallerstedt, said the issue of other teams knowing their signals arose two or three weeks ago. He wasn’t exactly sure to what extent it has impacted the team’s defense.
“I think it affects you,” Smith said. “I hate having excuses. I won’t have excuses, but when somebody knows when you’re in a certain coverage every time, so I’m sitting there thinking, ‘How the heck are they attacking our corners?’ ‘How do they know we’re not in quarter-quarter-halves?’ ‘How do they know we’re not in cover two?’ I mean, it’s ridiculous. I just thought we’re having a string of bad luck.”
Now 3-7 on the season, the Red Raiders will look to get back in the win column at Iowa State on Saturday.

Tennessee players subject of sexual assault investigation
Two Tennessee players are the subject of a sexual assault investigation, according Knoxville television station WBIR.
Jimmy Hyams of Knoxville radio station WNML reported that two Tennessee players were reportedly involved in an alleged rape and coach Butch Jones confirmed that there was an ongoing investigation involving football players, but declined to elaborate.
Linebacker A.J. Johnson was one of those named, according to WBIR.
"We have so much positive momentum and positive energy right now,” Jones told media on Monday. “We can’t let that (allegation) derail us."
Jones also said he had not suspended anyone yet and that the school was still looking into the matter. But noted that he’s shown in the past that he takes allegations like this seriously.
According to Hyams, the incident occurred Sunday after a party following the Vols 50-16 win against Kentucky. One of the alleged victims said she would press charges while the other said she will not, according to Hyams.
Johnson was one of two players arrested back in February for provide alcohol to minors and resisting arrest. He was placed on 90 days probation as part of a plea agreement.
Johnson is Tennessee’s top tackler and second in the SEC with 101.

Northwestern's players were excited for Chick-fil-A after beating Notre Dame (Video)
Northwestern picked up its biggest win of the season when it came from behind to beat Notre Dame in overtime. The Wildcats were extremely excited as they walked off the field and into the visiting locker room at Notre Dame Stadium.
The excitement level then went up a notch when the players saw that they were getting Chick-fil-A for dinner.
(Warning: Explicit language)
One player even shouted, “And we got Chick-fil-A! This is the best day ever!”
It’s pretty funny how enthusiastic these guys are to eat some chicken for their post-game meal. I can’t blame them. Chick-Fil-A is definitely in the upper echelon of fast food establishments.
The upset improved Northwestern’s record to 4-6 on the season. With two games against Purdue and Illinois to go, the Wildcats have a chance to reach bowl eligibility with wins over the Boilermakers and Illini.

Report: Georgia increased Todd Gurley's insurance policy before he was injured
Georgia increased the insurance policy belonging to running back Todd Gurley in the past two weeks, according to a report by ESPN.
The policy was upped to $10 million — $5 million for total disability if Gurley was injured and never played again, and $5 million in loss of value insurance if he slipped in the NFL draft. Gurley’s previous policy, which was written by International Specialty Insurance, had $5 million in total disability and $2.5 million in loss of value insurance.
The timing couldn’t have been better after Gurley suffered a torn ACL during last weekend’s game against Auburn and will miss the rest of the season. Gurley had missed the previous four games while serving a suspension for taking money for signing memorabilia.
According to ESPN, Georgia paid in between $50,000 and $60,000 for the policy, which is allowed by the NCAA. Gurley could collect on the policy if he falls out of the first round or if he fails to be drafted.

Notre Dame QB Everett Golson suffers sprained shoulder in Northwestern loss
Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson suffered a sprained AC joint in his right throwing shoulder during Saturday's 43-40 loss to Northwestern.
Coach Brian Kelly said he was not sure if the injured shoulder affected Golson during the game, but Golson did play the entire contest. He completed 21-of-40 passes for 287 yards with three touchdowns. Golson also threw an interception and fumbled once. Golson has had at least one interception in each of his last seven games.
The Irish have lost three of their last four games and likely will be out of the College Football Playoff rankings this week.
Kelly said he was not sure whether Golson would miss any time because of the injury, but noted during his Sunday teleconference that Golson said he could throw Sunday if he needed to.
"I don't know," Kelly said. "I haven't gotten a chance to talk to him about it. There were certainly a couple of throws when he first did it where he put the ball into the ground. You could see that it affected him then. He said he was fine after that but obviously we missed some throws, especially in overtime. But he said it didn't affect him."
Golson’s injury will only make the calls for backup Malik Zaire that much louder. Golson and Zaire competed for the starting role in the spring before Golson emerged starter. However, Golson’s turnover issues have become a major frustration for Kelly and could open the quarterbacking competition again even if Golson is available to play.

Clemson QB Deshaun Watson does not have torn ACL, could return this year
Clemson fans feared the worst when Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson went down with a knee injury during Saturday’s loss to Georgia Tech. However, after being evaluated by Clemson’s medical staff, it was determined that the standout freshman does not have a torn ACL, as initially feared.
According to a release from the program, Watson has a sprained LCL and a bone bruise. Additionally, guard David Beasley’s injury is also considered minor. The senior, who has started much of the last three seasons, was diagnosed with Patellar tendon inflammation.
“We received some great news tonight,” head coach Dabo Swinney said Sunday night. “Both players are not seriously injured, something we feared Saturday. They are listed as day-to-day and their status will be evaluated later this week.”
Watson has thrown for 1,197 yards and 12 touchdowns in seven games – including four starts – for the Tigers this season. Before returning to the starting lineup against Georgia Tech, Watson missed three games with a broken bone in his hand.
After senior Cole Stoudt started at the beginning of the season, Watson, a Rivals.com five-star recruit in the class of 2014, took over as full-time starter in the Tigers’ fourth game against North Carolina.
Watson led the Tigers to wins over the Tar Heels and N.C. State before injuring his hand against Louisville on Oct. 11.
Clemson, now 7-3 after Saturday’s loss, hosts Georgia State this weekend at 3:30 p.m. ET.
