Eastern Washington's Tevin McDonald hits QB and makes interception in same play (Video)

It's way too easy to say that Eastern Washington DB Tevin McDonald made the play of the season on Saturday against Sam Houston State. The FCS season consists of just this game. So we'll go with the play of the game.

McDonald, a senior defensive back, came on the blitz late in the third quarter. He hit the arm of Sam Houston State QB Jared Johnson as Johnson went to pass and the ball fluttered into the air.

McDonald didn't give up on the play and after the ball bounced off a lineman and he caught it before being enveloped in a scrum.

It was an incredible display of hustle an awareness. Not only did McDonald not quit after hitting Johnson's arm, he had the awareness to try to find the ball and it fell right to him. The turnover led to a score that put Eastern Washington up 14 on SHSU.

VOD: Ricky Williams reads a poem in new Longhorn Network commercial

This Longhorn Network commercial allows Ricky Williams to show off his love for spoken-word poetry.

The former Texas RB and Heisman Trophy winner is the star of the new promo which features a poetry circle with a Texas cheerleader, a Texas band member and some Texas fans.

The poem sounds like something you would hear at an open mic night. Well, if there was a sports poetry open mic night.

In case you were wondering, when the University of Texas was founded, 40 acres were designated for its construction. Hence the 41st acre angle.

(Yes, the Longhorn Network is still around, and no, you probably don't get it unless you have AT&T or Dish.)

Airspace closed over Iceland volcano as it starts to erupt

Some of Iceland's airspace has been declared a no-fly zone after the Bardarbunga volcano started to erupt on Saturday.

The volcano's eruption hasn't hit the surface yet, but if it does and ash starts to fill the sky, it could delay or cancel thousands of flights, including the flights of Penn State and Central Florida. The teams are scheduled to play in Ireland on Saturday, Aug. 30.

According to the AP, the threat level in Iceland is red, the highest it can go. It means a "significant emission of ash into the atmosphere" is possible. Airspace 100 nautical miles by 140 nautical miles around the volcano is now restricted. The volcano is approximately 200 miles from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

Officials in Iceland knew the Bardarbunga volcano was erupting when seismic data indicated that magma was melting the ice above it. It's unkown if or when the eruption will be able to break through the ice, some of which is 1,300 feet thick.

Earlier in the week, each school said it was aware of the possiblily of the volcano's eruption. Both teams are scheduled to arrive in Dublin on August 27.

When the Eyjafjallajokul volcano erupted in 2010, approximately 100,000 flights were affected. However, a seismologist told the BBC that "We're nowhere near that point at the minute."

Kentucky WR Jeff Badet to miss two games after taking tennis ball to the eye

Kentucky WR Jeff Badet is out for the first two games of the season because of an eye injury.

The injury happened during a hand-eye coordination drill. Players catch tennis balls fired to them at a fast speed and Badet got hit in the eye with one on August 16. On Friday, coach Mark Stoops said he would miss "at least" the opener against Tennessee-Martin and the game against Ohio.

"I hope right after that, yeah," Stoops said. "It is getting better. It's not as bad as it could have been, and it's getting better. From what I understand, these injuries take some time, and we have to be very careful with that, that that type of injury."

Kentucky offensive coordinator Neal Brown said the team had been preparing without Badet. He had 22 catches for 285 yards and a touchdown in nine games as a freshman in 2013.

"It hurts. Not that this is a positive, but the good thing is we've been preparing without him," Brown said via CatsIllustrated.com. "He has not practiced since I want to say the fourth or fifth day in camp, so we've been preparing without him. He was coming back from the foot injury, we were taking him lightly. He was never out there making a whole bunch of plays, so it's not a let down from a team standpoint. I'm disappointed for him because he put in a lot of work to come back from the ankle injury he suffered in the spring, but he'll be ready."

Last season, WR Javess Blue, Kentucky's leading receiver, suffered an eye injury when he was hit in the face with a football. If things come in threes, Kentucky's receivers may want to wear goggles and helmet visors next year.

Can the Pac-12 catch the SEC?

Not yet, but they're getting closer -- and here's why From ESPN.com - College Football - Can the Pac-12 catch the SEC?

Steve Spurrier is larger than life outside of Williams-Brice Stadium (Photo)

Welcome to our Dr. Saturday feature titled "Random offseason tweet of the day." With real games just days away, coaches and players are still tweeting about non-football-related things as the season approaches. In this space, we'll try to find the funniest and goofiest tweets of the day. If you see something, don't hesitate to send it to us.

Steve Spurrier is watching you as you enter Williams-Brice Stadium this fall.

South Carolina has put up a giant banner of the coach outside the stadium.

— Sara Jane Harris (@SaraJaneHarris) August 23, 2014

Is the banner by itself intimidating? For the full Spurrier effect, the banner should talk trash in the hours leading up to gametime. A loop of trolling Spurrier comments would work, right? Hell, they could all be comments about beating Clemson. South Carolina fans never get tired of them. Spurrier certainly doesn't.

Virginia Tech names Texas Tech transfer Michael Brewer starting quarterback

Michael Brewer has won the Virginia Tech starting quarterback job.

The Hokies announced Saturday that Brewer, a transfer from Texas Tech, would start under center for Virginia Tech against William and Mary.

"I'm extremely honored to be labeled the starter at a program like Virginia Tech," Brewer said in a statement. "I'm very thankful for my teammates and the coaching staff for entrusting me and giving me this opportunity. I'm looking forward to this season."

Brewer, a junior, was competing with senior Mark Leal for the right to succeed Logan Thomas, who is now with the Arizona Cardinals.

“Both of the guys gave great effort and played very well in preseason, making it a very difficult choice,” Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. “It was a very close race and we’re proud of both of them.”

Brewer came to Virginia Tech in the offseason after graduating from Texas Tech. He had originally asked the university to transfer within the Big 12, but his request was denied. He was in line to be Texas Tech's starting quarterback in 2013 but injured his back before the season and after Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb each took turns playing well at QB for Tech, Brewer didn't get much playing time. He threw 10 passes last season.

Will Brewer be the focal point of the offense? During his career at VT, Thomas tantalized and frustrated Hokie fans, especially in his last two seasons. Last year, Virginia Tech finished 8-5 thanks to a traditionally great defense, but the offense couldn't keep up.

If Tech is to be the second-best team in the ACC after Florida State, Brewer will have to play well. While Virginia Tech's secondary is one of the best in the country, the team lost a lot of talent along the defensive front seven.

Five Cal Poly players charged with 23 felonies in alleged robbery

Five Cal Poly San Luis Obispo players who were arrested in connection with an August 10 alleged robbery at the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity house were formally charged Friday with 23 felonies.

The players are Cameron Akins, Jake Brito, Cortland Fort, Kristaan Ivory and Dominique Love.

From the San Luis Obispo Tribune:

Even though police have said that Akins was the only suspect to brandish a handgun and demand money or drugs from residents at the frat house, all five defendants have been charged with multiple felony counts of conspiracy to commit residential robbery, attempted residential robbery, attempted burglary, and false imprisonment, as well as several enhancements for using a firearm during a crime.

Akins was also charged with three additional charges of resisting arrest, a felony.

Police were alerted to the alleged robbery around 2:30 a.m. on August 10. When police arrived, according to the police report, Akins was confronting a member of the fraternity with a gun outside the house. As police asked him to drop the weapon, he fled and another fraternity member knocked the gun from Akins' hand and the two tumbled down a stairway.

Akins also tried to resist arrest, allegedly biting an officer. Fort was arrested in a car attempting to leave the fraternity house and the three others were arrested later.

The maximum sentence for residential robbery is 4.5 years while the sentence for using a firearm can be up to 10 years.

After the robbery happened, the school said cost would not be a factor in moving forward with expanded drug testing among athletes. According to the Tribune, Cal Poly had spent $2,000 testing 41 athletes, mostly football players, over the last year. Cal Poly has 540 athletes.

According to San Luis Obispo Police Chief Steve Gesell shortly after the robbery, at least one witness mentioned a possible relation to Xanax.

In 2013, a former Cal Poly player was shot in a drug deal involving Xanax.

Akins was projected to start at wide receiver in 2014. Ivory was the team's leading rusher in 2013 and the team MVP. Fort and Love are cornerbacks while Brito was likely to be a backup running back, according to the Tribune. Cal Poly is a member of the Big Sky Conference in the FCS division.

Louisville's DeVante Parker suffers foot injury at practice

Louisville WR DeVante Parker is headed to Charlotte, N.C., for further evaluation on a foot injury he suffered Friday night during practice.

The school said Parker injured his left foot and would visit Dr. Bob Anderson in Charlotte after he was evaluated by Louisville team physicians.

Parker tweeted Friday night that he was fine.

I appreciate all the love. I'm fine.

— Devante Parker (@TalentedYoung9) August 23, 2014

If Parker is out for an extended period of time, his absence is a huge blow to the Louisville offense that is beginning life after QB Teddy Bridgewater. As a junior last year, Parker was Louisville's leading receiver and had 55 catches for 885 yards and 12 touchdowns. In his career he has 113 catches for 1,920 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Redshirt freshman Will Gardner is expected to start at QB against Miami on September 1 as Louisville begins life in the ACC. If Parker can't go against Miami, Kai De La Cruz, who had 15 catches for 271 yards last year, is listed as his top backup.
