Minnesota QB Mitch Leidner still tops depth chart, not ruled out for Michigan game
With starting quarterback Mitch Leidner sidelined with a knee sprain and turf toe, Minnesota completed just one pass against San Jose State but still managed to beat the Spartans 24-7 at home to improve to 3-1.
Chris Streveler started in Leidner’s place and threw for a measly seven yards on 1-of-7 throwing, but the redshirt freshman did run for 161 yards and a touchdown in his first career start.
Despite Streveler’s running prowess, head coach Jerry Kill said Leidner, a sophomore who has thrown for 362 yards and run for 51 this season, is still the starter. Leidner’s status for Saturday in the Gophers’ Big Ten opener at Michigan, however, is still unclear.
“He hasn’t done anything. I wish I had the answer,” Kill said. “I’m controlled by our training staff. We’ll have to see throughout the week.”
Kill said Leidner’s injury status is a fluid situation that could change as the week progresses.
“He’s got turf toe. He had an MRI, all that stuff, on top of what he’s had before. We’ll see how he progresses, see what happens,” Kill said. “I certainly won’t count him out, but I won’t know till the week goes.”
The Gophers have always been a run-first team under Kill – but never quite to the extent showcased against San Jose State. The Gophers ran the ball 58 times for 380 yards (6.6 yards per rush) compared to just seven passing attempts. Though Michigan has struggled to a 2-2 record thus far, the edge could go to the Wolverines if Minnesota presents itself as a completely one-dimensional offense once again.
Of course it won’t be easy for the Wolverines to stop workhorse senior David Cobb. He put up 207 yards on 34 carries against SJSU and has already racked up 539 yards on the ground this season.
Kill knows stopping Cobb will be a key for the Wolverines defense, so generating production through the air is crucial.
“They're going to come up, try to stop the run,” said Kill, who has never beat Michigan during his tenure. “There's no question that we have to be able to throw the ball and throw it well. We're smart enough to know we're going to have to do some good things in the throwing game to be able to win on Saturday.”

NCAA prez Mark Emmert says domestic violence incidents should be handled by universities
NCAA president Mark Emmert said Tuesday the NCAA will stay away from involving itself with incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault on college campuses. Instead, Emmert says the schools should handle these incidents individually.
“If a student-athlete engages in bad behavior, they have to be subject to the same standards of conduct as everyone else,” Emmert said, per the Associated Press. “The most important thing to the NCAA membership has always been that students aren’t treated in any privileged or disproportionate fashion.”
The NCAA released a new handbook in August that details its recommended ways of handling instances of sexual abuse and domestic violence to serve as a guideline of sorts for athletic departments.
The association has also been apart of an initiative with the White House called “It’s On Us.” The campaign, which launched last week, “is designed to get young men and women to take responsibility for themselves and their behavior.”
While these issues have plagued the NFL in recent weeks, these incidents aren’t foreign to college campuses either. The question Emmert wants to address is whether or not a student-athlete should be held to a different standard than the average person.
“I don’t know that we need to hold (student-athletes) to a higher standard,” Emmert said. “They are in many cases highly visible people and they have to know that there are certain responsibilities, and they need to be handled accordingly.”
Emmert said that, for the most part, schools take the right measures in dealing with these serious situations appropriately. Part of that includes measuring the public’s perception of the university.
“Most universities understand that’s a reflection of the university. Universities have a lot more at stake in holding students accountable for their behavior,” Emmert said. “I wouldn’t say it’s done right all the time but it is done right most of the time.

It’s a sharp look that the team previously wore in 2012 in a home loss against Louisiana Tech. The Cavs, 2-2, will look to come out on the winning end this time around against an 0-3 Kent State squad.
Virginia is a much-improved squad this season compared to last year’s 2-10 record. The team’s non-conference slate was one of the toughest in the country. The Cavs lost by eight to BYU and UCLA – both ranked squads – but they managed to upset No. 21 Louisville 23-21 at home.

Lawyer of alleged victim in Jameis Winston case says Winston's attorney tried to pay off accuser
A lawyer representing the woman who accused Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of rape released a statement Wednesday afternoon saying that Winston’s attorney offered to pay the alleged victim to stay silent about the incident. This statement contradicts what Winston’s attorney, David Cornwell, wrote in a letter to Florida State that surfaced on TMZ Wednesday morning.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, John Clune, a Title IX lawyer who represents the alleged victim, issued the statement in response to Cornwell’s claim that Patricia Carroll, a lawyer for the accuser, asked for $7 million to “never hear from (the accuser) or (Carroll) again – in the press or anywhere.”
The lengthy statement says that Cornwell leaked the letter to TMZ himself “at a time when Mr. Winston is suffering from the negative attention of his own continuing misconduct of last week.”
In reference to Florida State’s continuing Title IX investigation into the alleged incident from December 2012, Clune also says “Cornwell appears to know that Mr. Winston is about to be charged by Florida State with sexual assault and this letter seems to be his final attempt to prevent FSU from complying with federal law.”
Clune then goes on to say that it was Cornwell, not Carroll – the accuser’s former counsel – who discussed “paying off” the accuser.
The statement continues:
“Patricia Carroll didn’t even know who David Cornwell was until he called. Mr. Cornwell then himself flew down from Atlanta to negotiate with Ms. Carroll. Settlement discussions were immediately unproductive as Cornwell was crude and insulting going so far as to say ‘your client likes to [expletive] football players.’ When told that the client’s main concern was not money but that Winston be held accountable for his actions, Cornwell threatened to sue our client and her parents for civil racketeering in an effort to intimidate them into staying quiet."
Clune goes onto to say that Cornwell misrepresented the timeline in which the accuser reported the incident.
“Mr. Cornwell additionally and inaccurately portrays that our client chose to file a complaint ‘two years later.’ The truth is that the University approached our client in October of 2013 and asked her for the first time whether she would cooperate with disciplinary charges against Mr. Winston after the school received a second report of sexual misconduct by another woman.”
After a 11-month delay in the case, Winston was never charged due to a lack of evidence.
Florida State interviewed Winston in January as a part of the ongoing Title IX investigation. Clune said previously that the woman was interviewed by FSU in August and that he expected FSU to bring code of conduct charges up against the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback.
Meanwhile, Cornwell maintains that Winston will continue to cooperate with the investigation and that he “looks forward to clearing his name.”

Emmitt Smith apologizes for saying Florida QB Jeff Driskel should be benched
Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel struggled mightily in the Gators’ 42-21 loss to Alabama over the weekend. His lackluster play has drawn criticism from Florida fans and even led Florida and NFL legend Emmitt Smith to tweet that Driskel should be benched.
“Put Jeff Driskel on the bench please, I have seen enough,” Smith wrote in a tweet that was later deleted.
Though many fans agree with Smith’s assessment, the longtime Dallas Cowboys running back apologized to Driskel and head coach Will Muschamp.
“To me, to Jeff Driskel and our football team,” Muschamp said, per the Orlando Sentinel. “He was frustrated. He wants us to win. He wants us to be successful. He’s a great Gator. Everybody’s entitled to their opinion. And I appreciate Emmitt calling and saying the things he said, I really do. He’s a class individual, and he’s about all the right things.”
The junior completed just 9-of-28 passes for 93 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, but the 45-year-old Smith evidently regretted calling out Driskel for his play.
Driskel has had an up-and-down season for the 2-1 Gators. Overall, he has thrown for 636 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions at a 56 percent completion percentage in three games.
Muschamp continues to back Driskel publically, despite clamors to give freshman Treon Harris a shot.
"Jeff gives us the best opportunity to win the game," Muschamp said, via InsideTheGators.com. "But Jeff needs to play better. He understands that."
The Gators have a bye this week, so Driskel will have to wait until Oct. 4 to get back on track in a road game against Tennessee.

Arizona takes you inside the stadium for Hail Mary win over Cal (Video)
The best finish of the college football season so far was Arizona’s last-second win over Cal at home late Saturday night.
For those who missed it, Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon hit Austin Hill on a 47-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass as time expired to cap off a 26-point second half comeback.
The play is still being talked about days later and Arizona put together a cool video compilation of fan videos to give viewers a glimpse into what the atmosphere was like when Hill improbably came down with the pass. Take a look.
The win improved the Wildcats’ record to 4-0 heading into this week’s bye. The team’s next game – a Thursday night road contest at Oregon – will be a big challenge.

Sen. Mary Landrieu tells any LSU keg-stand critics to 'get a life' (Photo)
During a tailgate for Saturday's Mississippi State-LSU game, Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) held the spigot for an LSU fan doing a kegstand.

The photo of the LSU keg stand with @SenLandrieu you've all been waiting for. #RollCallontheRoad #LASen http://ift.tt/1tMPcoz
— Bill Clark (@clarkshadows) September 21, 2014
Landrieu was making the rounds at tailgates as she's in the midst of a re-election campaign. She's facing U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy (R) in the general election in November.
If you're somehow unfamiliar with a keg-stand, it's exactly what the picture looks like. Someone is held upside down drinking a, uh, beverage from a keg. According to Mother Jones, it was Landrieu's first kegstand.
"My first keg stand," Landrieu says, as we walk away. "He wanted me to do it, but I said absolutely not—at least not in front of the national press." What if it would've won her some votes? "That's all right—I'm not that desperate."
Naturally, since this is an election cycle, Landrieu, a three-term senator, felt the need to publicly defend herself on Monday. According to Roll Call, she said the following about anyone wanting to criticize the keg stand.
“They need to get a sense of humor, and they need to get a life — it’s just the way we roll,”
She also said that the man doing the stand was a 28-year-old with a master's degree.
The photos are simply not a big deal. While keg-stands may not be viewed in the most flattering of lights, when you consider the host of controversies we've come to expect from politicians, this is something that barely registers a blip. If Landrieu loses to Cassidy, it won't be because of the photos. If it's related to Saturday at all, it's because LSU fans believe she was a jinx to the Tigers as Mississippi State won in Baton Rouge for the first time since 1991.

Drew Stanton and Brock Osweiler have sent messages to ASU's Mike Bercovici
Mike Bercovici is set to make his first career start for Arizona State on Thursday night and he's getting some support from a couple NFL QBs.
Bercovici, a redshirt junior, said he's received messages from the Arizona Cardinals' Drew Stanton and the Denver Broncos' Brock Osweiler. Stanton has started in place of the injured Carson Palmer the last two weeks.
"Yesterday I received a text from him. It was awesome," Bercovici said. "He said 'Hey it's Drew, just wanted to let you know I've been in your shoes before, good luck this weekend, I've got all the confidence in you.' I just was so ecstatic that he would take the time to do that because obviously there's kind of a unity you have with backup quarterbacks stepping in for a role. But shoutout to him, just kind of making my day and giving me that extra confidence."
Osweiler, Peyton Manning's backup, played at Arizona State. He and Bercovici were at Arizona State together in 2011. Bercovici was a three-star recruit according to Rivals out of Los Angeles in 2011.
"Brock Osweiler texted me some of the greatest words of encouragement that I've ever really gotten,'' Bercovici said via the Arizona Republic. "Obviously, I had a great relationship with him my freshman year. He was in a lot of huge games. Basically, he just told me, 'Be the person that I am and (just focus) on completions. That's the way to get going. Just completions, completions, completions.' That really stuck with me."
ASU starting QB Taylor Kelly injured his foot against Colorado and after Kelly left the game, Bercovici got some playing time in the fourth quarter. With the Sun Devils holding on to a second half lead, Bercovici only attempted four passes, completing two for eight yards. Arizona State coach Todd Graham said Sunday that Bercovici should simply trust the offensive players around him.
"I think what gives me the most confidence in having a back up quarterback out there is who it is," Graham said via ASUDevils.com. "Mike's skill set is very unique and we're very confident in him. And then the line and the people he has around him. I think Mike just needs to use the people he has around him and run the offense. He's looked good against our defense."

Florida State DT Nile Lawrence-Stample out for season
Florida State will be without a starting defensive lineman for the rest of the year.
Head coach Jimbo Fisher said Tuesday that Nile Lawrence-Stample suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Saturday night’s win over Clemson. According to Warchant.com, Lawrence-Stample, a redshirt junior, played throughout the game with the injury, but the severity wasn’t known until early this week.
Lawrence-Stample was one of three FSU d-linemen who went down with a leg injury during the Seminoles’ win over The Citadel on Sept. 6. He took advantage of the team’s bye week and was able to return against Clemson, but he’s now done for the year after the injury bug bit again.
“We found out (Monday) he’ll be out for the year. It’s the tendon down in there and you can’t chance that, can’t rehab that,” Fisher said, per ESPN.com. “It’s a shame because to nettle back and get healthy like he did and play a heck of a football game (and) he’ll have surgery now.”
The 6-foot-1, 314-pound Lawrence-Stample had nine tackles through three games.
While Derrick Mitchell Jr. will probably start opposite Eddie Goldman at defensive tackle with Lawrence-Stample out of the lineup, Fisher said that senior Desmond Hollin and freshmen Demarcus Christmas and Derrick Nnadi will see increased reps.
The 3-0 Seminoles will face 4-0 N.C. State on the road Saturday.

Lawyer for Jameis Winston reportedly says accuser's lawyer asked for $7 million
Did a lawyer for Jameis Winston's accuser ask for $7 milliion to never talk about the case again? Per TMZ, that's what David Cornwell, a lawyer for Jameis Winston, told the school.
Cornwell tweeted Tuesday that he would be advising Winston to cooperate in the school's Title IX investigation into the accused sexual assault against him. TMZ said it obtained the letter Cornwell sent to Florida State, and in it, he says that Patricia Carroll, a lawyer for the accuser, asked for $7 million and "If we settle, you will never hear from my client or me again -- in the press or anywhere."
After the accusations resurfaced after an 11-month delay in the case, Winston wasn't charged due to a lack of evidence in the case. The woman also had a second set of DNA on her shorts. The presence of the second set of DNA is applicable to another statement that Cornwell reportedly wrote that Carroll made.
In January, Carroll said that the woman would be filing a civil suit against Winston and that she wanted "heads to roll." It's unclear when the demand for the settlement was allegedly made to Cornwell.
The school interviewed Winston in January and is resuming a Title IX investigation into the matter. According to another lawyer for the accuser, she was interviewed by the school in August. That lawyer, John Clune, said he expected the school to bring code of conduct charges against Winston.
In April, the Department of Education opened an investigation into Florida State's handling of the case.
"Mr. Winston will cooperate with the Investigation," ends Cornwell's letter, via TMZ. "He looks forward to clearing his name. But Mr. Winston will not walk into a honey trap. The Investigation must be a legitimate investigation."

Nick Saban says he's been wanting offensive coordinators to open up offense
Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin has rightfully been praised for his play-calling in the Crimson Tide's 42-21 win over Florida on Saturday. Not only did Kiffin have QB Blake Sims take effective shots deep (like on the first play of the game when Florida was expecting a run or short pass), but the Tide used the run game with incredible effectiveness as well.
Wednesday, Saban was asked if Kiffin, a former coach at Tennessee, the Oakland Raiders and USC, had more responsibility for the offense than previous coordinators under Saban. Saban passionately said no.
"No, not at all," Saban said. "I've been begging the offensive coordinators around here to open it up ever since I've been here. [Current Florida State coach] Jimbo Fisher was the best offensive coordinator I ever had that ever did what I wanted to do and everyone wants to run the ball. And we've always had a very good team to run the ball. And we had a very good defense. And it was really smart to play the way we played. And now we have more skill players that are good perimeter players and I think we are doing what we need to do on offense to take advantage of that."
No returning Alabama player with previous significant playing time has benefitted more from Kiffin than WR Amari Cooper. Cooper's statline through four games is crazy. He has 43 catches for 655 yards and five touchdowns. Yes, Alabama's schedule will get tougher, but extrapolated out to 12 games, that's 129 catches for 1,965 yards and 15 scores.
While you may chuckle at the thought of Saban and a high-powered offense together given his disdain for quick-tempo offenses, a vertical offense doesn't always have to run 90 plays per game. And look at the offensive linemen and running backs Saban has had in his time at LSU and Alabama. Running the ball has been his teams' strength as he said.
But now with Cooper, TE O.J. Howard and the emergence of Blake Sims, Alabama can be just as scary throwing as it can be running. If you panned Saban's hire of Kiffin, it's an offense that you probably didn't expect.
However, Saban isn't satisfied with his team's offensive performance. The Tide had seven "administration" penalties as Saban calls it (pre-snap penalties), against Florida and turned the ball over three times.
"Lane does a really good job of taking advantage of what players can do," Saban said. "And I think that has benefitted us so far this season. But there are a lot of things we need to do better on offense. The offensive line needs to play better with more consistency, we need to be a better inside running team ... We have made a lot of explosive plays, we haven't always been as consistent as we need to be. And that's what we really want to focus on doing."
"My philosophy hasn't changed at all. I've always asked for this. 'Why don't we throw the ball on this look instead of running this play where we can't block everybody?' Which is what we do now. It's a pro philosophy. And Lane's got experience as a pro coach. That's his background, that's what he does. And he does a really good job. I think he utilizes the players really well and presents problems for the defense by formation and adjustment ... but in my opinion, we have not arrived as an offense. He would be the first to tell you that. And I will tell you that too."
