Western Michigan helps wheelchair-aided boy score touchdown during practice (Video)
Western Michigan has spent the past two weeks preparing to better last season’s 1-11 campaign, but took some time out of that preparation to provide a special moment to one of the Broncos biggest fans.
Last Thursday, as the team was doing situational drills in practice, quarterback Zach Terrell was joined by a new running back, wheelchair-bound John Mulhearn. Mulhearn is the son of Sean Mulhearn, a linebacker on Western Michigan’s 1988 Mid-American Conference championship team.
Terrell took the snap and handed it off Mulhearn while his father weaved him through Western Michigan defenders and into the end zone.
The entire team joined in the end zone for the celebration.
It was definitely a fantastic moment for a team that called the touchdown "the most meaningful points of the year."

Ohio State's betting odds of winning the national title drop significantly
On Monday, Ohio State was among the betting favorites to win the national championship.
By the time reports surfaced that quarterback Braxton Miller would miss the season with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, those betting odds changed dramatically.
According to Bovada.lv, the Buckeyes were 10/1 to win the national title, behind Florida State (4/1), Alabama (5/1), Oregon (7/1) and Auburn (9/1), to start the week. On Tuesday, those odds dropped to 40/1, tying the Buckeyes chances to win a national title with Ole Miss and Stanford.
"Ohio State was a major contender at 10-1 to win the National Championship and considering Braxton Miller was a frontrunner for the Heisman at 15-2, this injury has impacted their odds drastically going from 10-1 to 18-1 amidst the rumors of the injury and now are confirmed at 40-1,” said Kevin Bradley, sports book manager at Bovada.lv. “Michigan State and Wisconsin will now surpass them as favorites for the Big Ten and only time will tell if we are over-adjusting on the Buckeyes, even though they still have a fairly easy schedule."
As Bradley noted, there might still be some value in the Buckeyes, The schedule is relatively easy and even though new starting quarterback J.T. Barrett has no collegiate experience, he was a four-star dual-threat quarterback coming out of high school. That only thing that perhaps prohibited him from taking the backup role a year ago was that he was coming off an ACL tear from his senior season.
Reports from Rivals’ BuckeyeGrove.com say Barrett has a strong, accurate arm and the ability to make plays with his feet. The site also said Barrett had good leadership skills, which will be a must if he wants to move the Buckeyes forward from the devastating loss of Miller.
A 40/1 bet seems risky, but Ohio State might not be as bad off as many believe it to be. Even with Barrett at the helm, Ohio State could still go 11-1 with its lone regular season loss at Michigan State in early November. The rest of the schedule, with Ohio State’s talent, should be manageable.

Today’s Video of the Day might be the cutest thing you’ll see all season.
North Carolina punt returner Ryan Switzer is apparently a big fan of the Disney movie Frozen and we’re not sure whether that’s by choice or whether it’s because he has a little sister who happens to enjoy it, too.
In either case, Switzer sang a sweet duet of “Love Is An Open Door” with his young sister and it is totes adorbs. (Isn’t that what all the kids are saying these days?)
As noted in the video, there’s no doubt that once this gets around, Switzer will be quite popular with the ladies (and probably ridiculed by his teammates).

Wisconsin will keep quarterback starter a secret until opener against LSU
Gary Andersen might know who the starting quarterback is for Wisconsin, but he has no plans to make that announcement public.
Andersen told media following Monday’s scrimmage that the starter would be revealed when the Badgers took the field for their season opener against LSU.
“We may know who the starter is, but we’re not going to say who the starter is until we jog out onto the field for the LSU game,” Andersen said. “There’s no big announcement. We don’t make a big announcement for the right tackle, don’t make a big announcement for the starting nose guard, so we’re not going to do that for the quarterback either.”
Joel Stave and Tanner McEvoy have been splitting reps throughout fall camp. Stave started all 13 games last season and led the Badgers to a 9-4 record. He set a single-season school record with 336 passing attempts and his 208 completions was the third-highest in school history. His 22 touchdown passes trailed only Russell Wilson, and his 2,494 passing yards were the top mark set by a sophomore.
But Stave also threw 13 interceptions and lacked consistency, which didn’t sit well with Andersen and is what caused Wisconsin to open up the quarterbacking job in the first place.
McEvoy started his career at South Carolina before ending up at Arizona Western College. After he lost out on the backup role to Curt Phillips last season, McEvoy moved to receiver and then, after suffering a wrist injury that required surgery, we was moved to safety where he started three games.
Even though Stave should be the clear leader in this race — he has the experience and the better arm — McEvoy has made it interesting because of his ability to make plays with his feet.
Andersen has said all along that the starter would be the player that moved the team down the field with consistency and gave the Badgers the best chance to win. However, whom he might think that is will remain a mystery at least for the next couple weeks.

Maryland unveils lifetime scholarship guarantee for all athletes
Scholarship athletes at Maryland will now have lifetime scholarships.
The school announced the "Maryland Way Guarantee" on Tuesday. The provision means that all athletes who finish their eligibility or leave the school under good standing prior to graduation will receive tuition, books and fees paid for until they graduate.
The provision applies to athletes in every sport at Maryland. Previously, Maryland's scholarships had been one-year financial aid agreements renewed annually.
“Our vision is to be the best intercollegiate athletic program while producing graduates who are prepared to serve as leaders in the local, state and global communities,” Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said in a statement. “We are confident ‘The Maryland Way Guarantee’ will further demonstrate our commitment to our student-athletes’ pursuit of a college degree.”
The program begins in November 2014 with all incoming athletes. As part of its student athlete "bill of rights" announced in June, Indiana introduced multi-year guaranteed scholarships for athletes and financial support for tuition, books and fees for athletes who wanted to finish their degrees.
Earlier this summer, USC announced it would provide four-year scholarships for football, men's basketball and women's basketball.
Maryland's announcement comes after the NCAA's Board of Directors approved autonomy reforms for the Power Five conferences. The top five conferences will now have the ability to make rules that apply to themselves including provisions to provide scholarships that provide the full cost of attendance for athletes.
While the NCAA still permits schools to have one-year renewable scholarships, expect other schools to follow the lead of Indiana and Maryland and go above USC's four-year scholarship announcement. Schools continue to receive a lot of scrutiny regarding collegiate athletic reform, especially on the heels of U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken's ruling in the O'Bannon vs. NCAA case.
Changing the way scholarships are handled is not only a move that's beneficial to athletes and their futures but one that can help change public perception as well.
The NCAA is currently appealing Wilken's ruling.

Report: Ohio State QB Braxton Miller out for the season
Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller will miss the 2014 season after reinjuring his surgically repaired right shoulder, according to ESPN.com’s Brett McMurphy.
Miller suffered the injury during the closed afternoon session of Monday’s practice. According to Ohio State site Eleven Warriors, Miller was making a routine throw when he dislocated his shoulder and collapsed to the turf. He was scheduled to have an MRI on Tuesday.
Ohio State cancelled all interviews for Tuesday and said it would have an update on Miller’s status as soon as it became available.
Miller originally injured his throwing shoulder during the Orange Bowl against Clemson. He had surgery in late February and missed all of spring football. He was cleared to throw in July, but did so very gingerly. He had also be used sparingly during fall camp while he worked through soreness issues.
Miller met with the media for the first time following Monday’s morning practice and said that although he was sore, he felt like everything in his shoulder was fine.
"I'm doing fine," said Miller, who sparingly threw during the morning session. "It's just a progression in my shoulder, just a precaution. I don't want to overdo it before the first game and then I've got to sit out the first game because my muscle is too sore back in the back. It's part of the plan. We just talk about it every day and I do exercises to get the strength back up. I'll be good."
Miller was scheduled to throw more during the afternoon session.
ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell noted Tuesday morning that Miller does have a $1 million insurance policy that safeguards his financial future should he not be able to play again. The premium was paid for by Ohio State.
The Buckeyes now will turn to redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett as the started. Barrett moved ahead of sophomore Cardale Jones on the depth chart last week. Barrett has no collegiate game experience and Jones has played in just three games, completing one pass for three yards.

JaMarcus Russell joins Leinart, Bosworth and Shuler in commercial sequel
The second commecial featuring former Oklahoma LB Brian Bosworth, former USC QB Matt Leinart and former Tennessee QB Heath Shuler is out and they're joined by former LSU QB JaMarcus Russell.
Russell joins the trio grilling in a backyard in the new Dish Network spot. The first commercial was set in a diner.
Russell was the highest-drafted of the four players. He went No. 1 overall in the 2007 NFL draft to the Oakland Raiders after his LSU Tigers went 11-2 and demolished Notre Dame in the 2007 Sugar Bowl. However, he only played in three seasons with the Raiders and threw 10 fewer touchdown passes (18) in those three seasons than he did in his final year at LSU (28).
He slimmed down last summer in an attempt to come back but wasn't signed by an NFL team.
While Russell's appearance is certainly unexpected, the best part of the commercial may be Leinart looking back fondly on USC while holding a bratwurst and saying "Glory, back in our hands."
No Matt, it's a piece of processed meat.

Here's what Kentucky's Matt Elam looks like next to Jared Lorenzen (Photo)
Welcome to our Dr. Saturday feature titled "Random offseason tweet of the day." With real games just days away, coaches and players are still tweeting about non-football-related things as the season approaches. In this space, we'll try to find the funniest and goofiest tweets of the day. If you see something, don't hesitate to send it to us.
Kentucky freshman Matt Elam is one big dude. The DT is listed at 6-7, 375 on Kentucky's official roster.
So what does he look like standing next to former Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzen? The Hefty Lefty answered that question for us on Monday.
Yes I wanted to be in front of him. Dude is big but as nice as they come. Good luck to ya @FballIsLife69. http://ift.tt/1qmGOq8
— jared lorenzen (@JaredLorenzen22) August 18, 2014
Lorenzen, who was, uh, conservatively listed at 6-4, 260 on his Kentucky player page, may be shorter than Elam but he's not losing a size battle by much. Lorenzen made a football comeback in the Continental Indoor Football League earlier this year and was listed at 320 pounds. We're going to guess that may not be accurate at the moment.
Elam was a three-star recruit according to Rivals and the No. 5 prospect in the state of Kentucky.

Notre Dame's new Under Armour uniforms don't stray far from tradition (Photos)
Notre Dame’s new Under Armour uniforms have arrived — and they look almost identical to the old Adidas uniforms.
Not that this should be a surprise.
Notre Dame’s uniforms are classic and rarely messed with, so keeping to the clean look of blue and gold and white and gold was pretty much a given.

Notre Dame and Under Armour inked a 10-year partnership that officially began on July 1.
If you’re disappointed that Notre Dame didn’t go with one of Under Armour’s more outlandish designs, don’t fret. The Shamrock Series uniforms will be revealed later today and as we’ve seen in the past, Notre Dame has no problem breaking away from tradition for those uniforms.
Let’s just hope Under Armour stays away from reflective helmets and giant fighting leprechauns in its approach.

Iowa State and Purdue name starting quarterbacks
Sam Richardson will be Iowa State's starting quarterback and Danny Etling will be Purdue's. Both schools made the decisions public on Monday.
Richardson started eight games for 3-9 Iowa State in 2013 but was injured towards the end of the season and Grant Rohach took over as the Cyclones' starting quarterback. The battle to start throughout the spring was between the two, and Richardson will start the season again as Iowa State's QB.
"Sam has displayed great leadership and that certainly includes poise in the pocket where he has been very much in control of our offense and of himself," Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said via CycloneReport.com. "His understanding of the scheme and his decision making has really grown in the last two weeks, and maybe as much as anything, he is throwing a great ball, an accurate ball, a tight ball and a catchable ball."
Richardson was 121-219 for 1,397 yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2013.
Etling started seven games for Purdue, 1-11, last season and was 149-267 for 1,690 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. But he wasn't guaranteed the starting job at the beginning of the season and was in a competition with sophomore Austin Appleby, who attempted six passes last season. The other QB to get playing time last year for Purdue was Rob Henry, who was a senior and also switched to safety during the season.
"I think the biggest thing is coming out of the spring, [Etling] was a little bit ahead," Purdue coach Darrell Hazell said via GoldandBlack.com.
