Gary Andersen might know who the starting quarterback is for Wisconsin, but he has no plans to make that announcement public.
Andersen told media following Monday’s scrimmage that the starter would be revealed when the Badgers took the field for their season opener against LSU.
“We may know who the starter is, but we’re not going to say who the starter is until we jog out onto the field for the LSU game,” Andersen said. “There’s no big announcement. We don’t make a big announcement for the right tackle, don’t make a big announcement for the starting nose guard, so we’re not going to do that for the quarterback either.”
Joel Stave and Tanner McEvoy have been splitting reps throughout fall camp. Stave started all 13 games last season and led the Badgers to a 9-4 record. He set a single-season school record with 336 passing attempts and his 208 completions was the third-highest in school history. His 22 touchdown passes trailed only Russell Wilson, and his 2,494 passing yards were the top mark set by a sophomore.
But Stave also threw 13 interceptions and lacked consistency, which didn’t sit well with Andersen and is what caused Wisconsin to open up the quarterbacking job in the first place.
McEvoy started his career at South Carolina before ending up at Arizona Western College. After he lost out on the backup role to Curt Phillips last season, McEvoy moved to receiver and then, after suffering a wrist injury that required surgery, we was moved to safety where he started three games.
Even though Stave should be the clear leader in this race — he has the experience and the better arm — McEvoy has made it interesting because of his ability to make plays with his feet.
Andersen has said all along that the starter would be the player that moved the team down the field with consistency and gave the Badgers the best chance to win. However, whom he might think that is will remain a mystery at least for the next couple weeks.
