Mack Brown on Charlie Strong's dismissals: 'He has right to do whatever he wants'

In his role as an ESPN analyst, Mack Brown hasn't talked about Texas a lot.

In August, he even said he had made an agreement to not talk about his former program with new Texas coach Charlie Strong.

But on Wednesday, Brown talked at length about Texas and its new coach. Brown was on the Paul Finebaum Show and was asked about the transition from him to Strong. Since he started at Texas, Strong has dismissed nine players including OT Kennedy Estelle, the latest Longhorn to leave the program.

Brown compared the transition of regimes to a marriage involving stepchildren and said that since Strong is now the coach, he has the right to do what he needs to do and that Brown hasn't talked to any of the nine dismissed players. The Austin American-Statesman reported Tuesday that Strong had upped Texas' drug testing program.

"When a coach comes in and takes over a new program, he's adopting 125 new stepchildren," Brown said. "Some of them love the place but a lot of them love the coaches, they came for a different offense, they came for a defense, and every coach is different. All have some similarities but all are different."

"The other thing I've always thought is that when the coach leaves the program he's like the ex-wife. He's gone. He's out. 'She was nice, we liked her, had some great moments and it all worked, but now she's gone' and everyone's excited about the new wife. And that's the way it should be. When you've got a program like Texas or one like USC, every little thing is scrutinized. Charlie had two players leave in the spring. And now that he's had some leave in the fall, it's gotten a lot more attention than it would, say, in a transition at a lot of the other schools that don't get as much attention. But there were kids that left when I came here, there were kids who left when Nick went to Alabama. That's part of it, you're just going to have that. And one thing about Texas, it's the good and the bad."

Brown continued, and brought up Florida State's treatment of Jameis Winston, who was recently suspended for the Clemson game after he shouted a lewd remark at FSU's student union.

"It is a lightning rod," he said. "When I asked coach (Darrell) Royal, what's the best thing about coaching at Texas, he said '27 million people care about what you do every day of your life.' I said what's the worst thing about coaching at Texas, and he said '27 million people care about what you do every moment of your life.'"

"So I've turned all of these thoughts over to Charlie Strong. It's his team, he has a right to do whatever he wants and I have not had an opinion of those. I have not talked to the parents, I haven't talked to the kids. I do know, and I think Charlie would tell you the same thing, no coach ever wants to run off a kid. You want to save him, just like Jameis. You want to give him a second chance, maybe even a third chance because you're talking about a life here. And when you do run one off, you've lost him. It's hard to help him from that standpoint. I'm sure if you talked to Charlie he would say it hurts him to have a kid leave the team as well."

You can listen to the entire interview here, it's well worth it.

Brown also talked about the number of rumors surrounding college football and his role as a former insider with knowledge of specifics. Earlier Wednesday, a Texas spokesperson said there were no plans for a meeting between Strong and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, a possibility that was reported earlier in the day.

Spokesperson for Texas says a meeting between Charlie Strong, Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith has not been set #Longhorns #HookEm

UCLA marked its territory on Arizona State's midfield logo (Photos)

In case Arizona State wasn't sure who its opponent was Thursday night, UCLA wanted to remind the Sun Devils.

As Bruin players were on the field for pregame warmups, "UCLA" got scratched into the middle stake of the ASU trident logo at midfield.

Naturally, Arizona State didn't take too kindly to the graffiti and repainted over the markings.

And then, of course, someone got to guard the logo after it was repainted to make sure that it wasn't defaced again.

— Edward Lewis (@EdwardLewisBSR) September 26, 2014

It's Arizona State's blackout game, so the black paint on the field made any markings on it rather visible. And while we don't condone vandalism, this harmless fun in this instance made us chuckle. Well done, UCLA. It's a good way to get under the Sun Devils' skin, though it'll mean more if UCLA wins.

Cincinnati freshman RB Chamoda Kennedy-Palmore dies in motorcycle accident

Just over a year after the tragic car accident that killed Cincinnati offensive lineman Ben Flick, another UC player has passed away.

According to multiple reports out of Cincinnati, Bearcats redshirt freshman running back Chamoda Kennedy-Palmore was killed when a vehicle struck the motorcycle he was riding. Kennedy-Palmore, a native of Liberty Township, Ohio, was 19.

Per WLWT, the incident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon, just two days before the Bearcats are set to face off against Ohio State in Columbus.

From WLWT:

Police said a motorcycle was southbound on Vine when a sport utility vehicle going west on Forest turned north on Vine, then left across the southbound lanes into a parking lot in the path of the motorcycle.

Following the accident, Kennedy-Palmore was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The 5-foot-8, 180-pound Kennedy-Palmore was a walk-on who had not seen the field in his short time with the program. His death comes one year and four days after the 19-year-old Flick was killed in a single-car accident while driving home from UC’s road win over Miami (Ohio) on September 21, 2013. The driver of the car, 18-year-old Sean VanDyne, passed away a few days after the accident. VanDyne was a Miami (Ohio) student who had been Flick’s best friend since elementary school.

Cincinnati receivers Mark Barr and Javon Harrison were also injured in the crash that killed Flick. UC head coach Tommy Tuberville announced in July that neither player would play again, but both would remain on full scholarship.

The university is expected to release a statement at some point Thursday evening.

Navy DC Buddy Green coached Saturday after spending morning in hospital

Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green did not want to miss his team's game against Rutgers.

Green was sick and didn't go to work on Friday. According to the Capital-Gazette, he was admitted into Anne Arundel Medical Center with flu-like symptoms. On Saturday, doctors wanted him to stay at the hospital. But the game against Rutgers was at 3:30 p.m. so Green checked himself out in time to make the game.

He coached from the sidelines and after the game went back to the hospital. He was discharged Monday and after working from home, returned to practice Wednesday.

Navy had a contingency plan in place if Green didn't make it to the game, but it wasn't needed. However, the Midshipmen lost 31-24.

From the Capital-Gazette:

"It's great to be back. I'm better now and just glad to be out here," Green said after practice. "Hats off to Anne Arundel. They found the problem, I had some good care and now I'm good to go."

Niumatalolo said Navy's defensive players were pumped to see their leader back on the practice field and overseeing meetings.

"Our kids recognize who Buddy is. Here's a guy that basically went from the emergency room to the game then back to the emergency room again. The guy sold out!" Niumatalolo said. "He's very demanding and is going to coach hard, but this guy will give anything for our football program."

And guess what? While in the hospital, Green, who is in his 13th season at Navy, was watching game film from the Rutgers game and preparing for Navy's next game against Western Kentucky. Goaches gonna coach, even while in the hospital.

Pac-12 is already worried its parity will keep it out of the playoff

Arizona place kicker Casey Skowron (41) reacts after losing to Arizona 49-45 during an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, in Tucson, Ariz. (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri) Is the Pac-12 already starting to worry about its spot in the College Football Playoff?

After Oregon struggled to beat Washington State last week and Cal nearly upset Arizona, there’s a fear brewing among Pac-12 coaches that league parity might be to the conference’s detriment.

When the season started, all of the talk was about the dominance of Oregon and UCLA. How those teams had the best quarterbacks, dominant lines, defense and should be carry the banner for the rest of the league.

Well, while both teams are undefeated, neither has looked especially good doing so. UCLA has struggled offensively, especially on the offensive line, and now could be without starting quarterback Brett Hundley. Oregon needed a come-from-behind effort to beat Michigan State at home and also had to stave off a threat from a lowly Washington State team. Meanwhile, teams such as Washington, Oregon State, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah also are undefeated creating concern that the upcoming Pac-12 gauntlet could become a situation where teams are knocking each other out of playoff contention.

"Every game is scary," Shaw said. "No one had a lot of expectations for Cal, and there were moderate expectations for Arizona. And then you turn their game on and you say, 'Wow.'"

This situation isn’t unique to the Pac-12. The SEC seems to face a similar crisis on a yearly basis, but it’s become a hot topic among Pac-12 coaches more because the increased level of competition in the conference has come as a surprise. For many years the Pac-12 has been top heavy. Oregon or Stanford have often been in positions to compete for a national title and then lost a game that would knock them out of contention. However, this year there’s fear that the Pac-12 best team might not have one loss, but even two losses considering the schedules.

"That's what we don't know," Shaw said of how the committee will view the Pac-12’s parity. "To me, that's the biggest unknown. It all hinges, as we all know, on the committee. Imagine a two-loss Pac-12 champion that played a hellacious schedule. Do they get bumped for a one-loss or undefeated team that did not play the same type of schedule? That to me is going to determine where this playoff goes."

Right now, considering the way some of the nation’s top teams are playing, it would be difficult for the Pac-12 to make a case for one of its two-loss teams to get in, especially with Notre Dame surging and possibly taking one of the playoff spots.

"I can guarantee you there will be 12 coaches going to the commissioner and saying, 'Hey, we need to change our schedule,'" Shaw said. "If we're going to beat each other up and get left out, we need to do what everybody else is doing, schedule-wise, or at least what some other people are doing schedule-wise."

If Shaw is talking about getting rid of the Pac-12’s nine-game conference schedule, he’ll meet resistance because eliminating the nine-game schedule means getting rid of some of the historic rivalries. It also would force Pac-12 teams to replace that game with another from one of the Power Five conferences just to keep pace with other leagues.

Of course, all of this is still speculation. The Pac-12’s seven undefeated teams are more than any other major conference so there’s a strong possibility at least one could get through the conference schedule unscathed or with just one loss. That weeding-out process will begin Thursday night when undefeated UCLA faces undefeated Arizona State.

"I would rather everyone we play not be good," Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said this week. "Let's be honest. I don't like these tough games. I'd rather be really good in a crappy league, but it's not going to happen. That ship has sailed."

Old Dominion says Middle Tennessee didn't consent to Monarchs wearing white at home

Old Dominion's "white-out" game is Friday night against Middle Tennessee. Fans are encouraged to wear white to the game, which is the school's first Conference-USA home game and first Friday night game.

However, the football team will not be wearing white jerseys.

According to Old Dominion, Middle Tennessee didn't consent to Old Dominion's request to wear white at home. Traditionally, teams wear colors at home and white on the road, so for a team to wear white at home, the road team must give written permission

From the Virginia Pilot:

“Our administration reached out to Middle Tennessee and their leadership,” Wilder said. “We asked Middle Tennessee permission and they denied our request."

Wilder said that when he's been asked by a home team to wear dark, the Monarchs have always said yes.

“My personal philosophy as a head coach is that if anyone asks us to wear dark on the road because of a promotion, I would 100 percent agree to do that to help a university promote a white-out," he said.

“We’re all trying to attract fans to games. We’re all trying to promote a sense of community and school pride.”

A spokesperson for Middle Tennessee told the Pilot that he was unaware of a request to wear white and would contact administrators.

If Middle Tennessee denied the request, it seems like an odd choice. Did they already have the uniforms for 2014 planned out and not want to change? The school has new Nike uniforms and the Blue Raiders have worn white tops and blue tops for its first two road games this year. According to this picture, all-white is an option. Was it planned?

We have a bright idea, what if home teams get to determine the color of jerseys? Let's abolish the colors at home rule and let home teams pick. The choices could be submitted to the NCAA offices a month before if they're different than normal, giving the road team ample time to choose. That seems like an easy solution to tie into promotions, don't you think?

Nebraska marching band plans 'Fear Ameer' tribute at halftime (Photo)

Nebraska’s Heisman push for running back Ameer Abdullah is in full swing and now the marching band is even getting in on the action.

Doug Bush, director of the Cornhusker Marching Band, tweeted out this tease Wednesday of how the band plans to celebrate Abdullah during halftime of this weekend’s game against Illinois.

Is this real life? Yes, for reals! Happening this Saturday's Halftime. @UNLBands #FearAmeer #Huskers http://ift.tt/1t02A4u

— Doug Bush (@DougBush2) September 24, 2014

Here’s a look at what is should look like in motion:

The Fear Ameer moniker is what Nebraska has used in its promotional material and the hashtag the school uses on social media. The school also has a website called fearameer.com to promote Abdullah’s accomplishments.

Abdullah currently has rushed for 625 yards and five touchdowns through four games this season. He already has two games with more than 200 yards rushing and three games with more than 100 yards.

However, it’s an uphill climb for a running back to win the Heisman.

Quarterbacks have won the award in 12 of the past 14 years and the two running backs that have won during that span, including Reggie Bush who had to give his Trophy back, were on teams that combined to go 23-0 during their regular seasons.

Nebraska isn’t considered a national title contender despite its 4-0 record, so Abdullah would need remarkable games from here on out to get the votes necessary for trip to New York.

And hey, a little love from the marching band doesn’t hurt.

David Ash writes letter thanking Texas fans

Texas QB David Ash wrote a public letter to Texas fans after he was forced to retire from playing football after the school said he suffered concussion symptoms after the season opener against North Texas.

Ash missed 10 games last year because of a concussion.

Here's the letter in full.

Dear Longhorn Nation,

Being the quarterback at The University of Texas has been a huge blessing and one of the biggest reasons is our fans. Throughout my career, you have been awesome in the good times and the tough times. I've recently fallen on some harder times and am just so grateful that you have continued to support me. I can't thank you enough. The words of encouragement in tweets and messages, and the prayers -- just know that they really matter. I am really appreciative of how y'all have treated me, as well as the opportunity to be a part of this great football program.

Growing up, I wasn't necessarily a Longhorn. My parents didn't go to school here so we didn't have any connection to The University of Texas. Now that I have been welcomed into the family, it's a part of who I am, a part of my identity. I wouldn't have it any other way. It's a huge blessing to be a part of the Longhorn family.

I'll always be a supporter of The University of Texas. The alumni and the people that make up the Longhorn family are going to be huge for me in the future. As I get older, I can pass along that special feeling of being a Longhorn.

So a big 'Thank You' to all of Longhorn Nation!

Hook 'em!

David Ash

Ash met with the media on Monday for the first time since had to end his playing career and said he had no regrets and knew he shouldn't continue playing football.

In his career, Ash was 385-of-613 passing for 4,728 yards with 32 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Tyrone Swoopes is now Texas' starting QB.

Mullins returned to Ole Miss and graduated in 1990. He died a year later at 21 because of a pulmonary embolism.

The helmet decals aren't the only part of a celebration of Mullins' life. Ole Miss is renaming Coliseum Drive on campus "Chucky Mullins Drive" in a ceremony on Friday.

In 1990, the Phi Beta Sigma faternity established the Chucky Mullins Courage Award, which has been given to an Ole Miss defensive player since 1990. According to the Clarion-Ledger, all 25 of the award's recipients are expected to be in attendance at the ceremony honoring Mullins.

His No. 38 is one of two numbers retired by Ole Miss. The other is Archie Manning's No. 18. The recipient of the Courage Award is allowed to wear Mullins' number and in 2014, Deterrian Shackelford is wearing it. He's the first two-time Chucky Mullins Courage Award winner after missing the 2011 and 2012 seasons because of knee injuries.

Iowa State prepares for Baylor a year after the worst loss in Cyclone history

Paul Rhoads doesn't want to harp on it too much. He knows his team is well aware.

"It" is what happened to Iowa State against Baylor last season. The Cyclones went to Waco, Texas and were thoroughly demolished 71-7. It was the biggest win against an FBS opponent Baylor had all season and the biggest loss in Iowa State history.

"You don't have to tell them much," Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said after the game last year. "They know they just got whipped and I know I just got whipped."

Rhoads is sticking to the theme as Iowa State prepares for Baylor on Saturday, believing its not necessary to constantly relive a game in which Iowa State only avoided a 71-0 shutout by scoring with 47 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

"I don't think you over-beat that drum," Rhoads said this week. "A good bit of them were there a year ago in Waco and knew what took place."

LB Luke Knott certainly knows.

"That score still sticks in a lot of our heads," Knott said via CycloneReport.com. "It's definitely a motivational piece heading into this week. You kind of get embarrassed looking back at that game. That's not the team that we are and not the way we want to represent this university and sports program. It definitely adds a little bit of excitement to this game."

A night game at home may not be enough to flip the outcome in the other direction Saturday night, but the Cyclones played well against Kansas State, a team who played Auburn tough in week four. Anything may not be possible, but the odds on a second straight 64-point game are slim to none.

"You look at the Kansas State game, which is a game we should have won, and then they go play Auburn in a game they should have won," QB Sam Richardson said. "I don't think we're behind in the pack at all. We just missed out on opportunities. It's a great measure for us playing against Baylor and a great test for our offense to shoot it out with theirs."

Baylor had 714 yards of total offense against the Cyclones last year. This year, Iowa State has had an off week to prepare for the Bears. Rhoads said he's wanting to avoid his players chasing Baylor's receivers with their backs to Bryce Petty.

"You've got to get more one-on-one opportunities on the practice field and we got that because of two weeks practice time," Rhoads said. "That's important. You've got to become an offensive player. You have to put yourself in the best situation to see the football. If you end up playing blind with your back to the defender, the odds favor them. Bryce Petty throws the ball so accurately and they have so many acrobatic receivers that can make the great catch."

"The short stuff that comes so easy to them, because you give them so much respect, sets you up for the double moves and stuff that goes down field. You've got to train those guys to be able to handle both."

Father of former Auburn TE Philip Lutzenkirchen spoke to Georgia about decision-making

Georgia had a special guest at Wednesday's practice to talk about making good decisions.

Mike Lutzenkirchen, the father of former Auburn TE Philip Lutzenkirchen, spoke to the team. Philip Lutzenkirchen was killed in a car crash in June along with Ian Davis, a former Georgia baseball player.

Police believed that alcohol played a role in the crash, which happened when the car Davis was driving missed a stop sign, hit two ditches, flew into the air and overturned. Philip Lutzenkirchen was in the back seat. According to toxicology reports, both were legally drunk and Davis' blood-alcohol level was 0.17. The legal limit in Georgia is 0.08.

"He just wanted to talk a little bit about the legacy of his son and the fact that he made a massive amount of good decisions in his life and that he did a lot of great things on and off the field, really a guy that most people would look up to if you took his life in totality,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said Wednesday via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But there was a moment where he made a bad choice, and that bad choice cost him everything. I don’t think his father wanted that to happen to anybody else.”

The idea to have Mike Lutzenkirchen speak to the team was QB Hutson Mason's. Mason and Philip Lutzenkirchen were friends growing up in Georgia and Mason wears a No. 43 pin in honor of Lutzenkirchen in interviews.

Lutzenkirchen caught 14 touchdown passes in his Auburn career, which ended after the 2012 season.

“They were probably best friends in high school,” Richt said “He also knew Kolton Houston and Michael Bennett and Watts Dantzler; they competed against him in basketball. There was some familiarity with a lot of our guys in the room that the father identified with a little bit."

“Sometimes when you hear stories from a coach or just a speaker who is random it doesn’t hit very close to home. But when a father walks in there and talks to you about a guy that we all knew of and competed against and some knew very well … he did a nice job. I appreciated him doing that.”

Mason said this summer that he credits Lutzenkirchen with his recruitment to Georgia. The two knew each other since they were 7.

“Philip really helped me with the recruiting process,” Mason said this summer. “Once he was done (with recruiting), he got me in touch with all his recruiting contacts. He helped me get my highlight tapes and my name out there.

“He really was the older brother I never had.”

Brian Kelly says Everett Golson's running game impact dictated by defensive looks

Through three games, no Notre Dame player has over 30 carries, yet four players have at least 22 carries. QB Everett Golson is one of those players.

Golson has 29 carries, the second most on the team. (In college, sacks are worked in to rushing totals.) Against Purdue in Notre Dame's last game, Golson was the team's leading rusher, both in terms of carries and yardage. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says that Golson is getting the opportunities because teams are spreading out to defend the Irish's offense.

"No, I mean, it's pretty clear the way teams are playing us," Kelly said. "We're getting a lot of six for five, six defenders for five blockers, and your quarterback has to be involved in the run game. So if we're going to stay in our detached spread sets, the quarterback is going to have to be involved in the run game.

So there's probably four or five of those runs that should have been passes, and there should have been four or five hand offs that should have been runs. So we need to get better in the option game with Everett, as well. So he'll still be central to what we do in the running game."

The clarity in defending the Notre Dame passing game is a compliment to Golson. In 2012, he completed less than 59 percent of his passes for just over 2,400 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. Through three games in 2014, his completion percentage is near 65 percent and he's already thrown seven touchdowns. His yardage totals are on pace to improve as well.

If Golson continues to lead the Irish in rushing attempts and yardage, it likely means that teams are paying much more attention to how his arm can beat them.

The increased efficiency through the air means that Notre Dame doesn't have to run as much as it did during the 2012 BCS Championship Game-appearing season. Though Kelly obviously doesn't want the decrease in quantity to affect the quality.

While Notre Dame has spread the carries around this season, Greg Bryant is the Irish's leading rusher with 119 yards on 22 carries. With the exception of Malik Zaire, who has four carries, Bryant is the only Notre Dame player to average over five yards a carry in the games against Rice, Michigan and Purdue.

"Oh, it's a different team," Kelly said. "We were trying to protect a young quarterback. We knew we had to run the football. We're much more of a spread offense where our running game can be dictated by what defenses do. Where in 2012, we ran with a lot of two tight ends, and it didn't matter what you did defensively; we were going to run the football"

"That doesn't mean we cannot run or should not run for 200 yards as an average. And I think in the original question that was asked, one of the things from an offensive perspective that we've got to get better at is running the football, even in our detached sets."

Mark Richt says Malcolm Mitchell could resume practicing next week

Could Georgia WR Malcolm Mitchell be practicing soon? It's possible, according to coach Mark Richt.

Mitchell has been plagued by knee issues throughout his Georgia tenure. He tore his right ACL celebrating a touchdown against Clemson in the first game of the season last year. He then missed spring practice this season with what the school said was a left leg injury. And before fall camp started, Mitchell had a "cartilage" issue" in his right knee.

Practicing would be great news. Playing in a game would be even better.

"He's getting better. I can tell you that. I'm getting more and more encouraged," Richt said via UGASports.com. "I think we're hopeful for Justin, Rumph and Malcolm next week. I'm not 100 percent sure, but I think they will all practice and if they practice well enough they'll play."

Justin is Justin Scott-Wesley. He's missed time with an ankle injury this season and was cited for marijuana possession last year after he was out for the season with a knee injury. Rumph is Jonathon Rumph, another receiver who has been dealing with a hamstring issue.

No, this isn't like the injury mess that Georgia had last season. The Bulldogs' impressive depth at running back has helped take pressure off the receiving corps. But getting the three of them back would only be good news for QB Hutson Mason. Mitchell had 40 catches for 572 yards in 2012. In five games last year, Scott-Wesley had 16 catches for 311 yards.

Because of his injuries, Mitchell hasn't been in an official practice in over a year. While Richt wondered about Mitchell's conditioning to be able to play a full game without having to manage his workload, there's another factor that's a little more pressing. Mitchell can apparently run straight. But cutting, an ability imperative to a wide receiver, may be another issue.

"I betcha he could run a takeoff right now," Richt said. "If you knew he could just run by everybody, catch it on the dead run and not touch anybody, I would put him in. But I'm not sure we can do that."
