LB Brian Bell, named in wrongful death lawsuit, will not sign with Florida State

(via Rivals) There was a name missing off Florida State’s signee list on Wednesday.

Brian Bell, a three-star linebacker out of Valdosta, Ga., had his scholarship offer revoked last week after Florida State decided it was in its best interest not pursue him. Bell was named last month in a $100 million wrongful death lawsuit that centers around Kendrick Johnson, a 17-year-old who was found dead inside a rolled-up mat in the Lowndes High gym in January 2013.

Johnson’s parents allege Bell, his brother and three other students were responsible for the death of their son.

The Lowndes County Sherriff's Department ruled Johnson’s death an accident, stating Johnson died of positional asphyxia after he got stuck in the mat while trying to retrieve his sneakers that were stored in the mat.

Bell was never charged with a crime or listed as a suspect during the investigation.

Lowndes High School coach Randy McPherson released a statement to the Valdosta Daily Times explaining the situation.

"Last Wednesday morning Coach Jimbo Fisher told me that the FSU Athletic Director and the President would not let him give Brian Bell a scholarship. We went to meet with the FSU President the next day. The next morning, Jimbo called me and told me that they still were not going to let him give Brian a scholarship."

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher declined to comment about the situation, referring all questions to his administration.

Bell also had offers from Cincinnati, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Louisville. It is unknown whether the Bell family has been in contact with any of those other programs.

Cordell Broadus, son of Snoop Dogg, commits to UCLA

Snoop Dogg's loyalties are now with UCLA instead of USC.

The rapper's son, Cordell Broadus, a four-star wide receiver from Las Vegas, made his college decision on Wednesday. While the Trojans were in the mix, Broadus picked UCLA, USC's cross-town rival.

"I just felt like that was the best place for me," Broadus said. "I have a great connection with the coaches and I want to play in front of my family out on the field and get a great degree."

Snoop's USC fandom has been well-documented, though it appeared to wane at the end of Lane Kiffin's tenure with the school. After Cordell announced his intentions to go to UCLA, Snoop appeared next to the podium wearing a UCLA jersey and said "we Bruins now."

Broadus went to Bishop Gorman High School. Bishop Gorman's coach in 2014, Tony Sanchez, is the new coach at UNLV.

"UCLA just presented the best platform for him that we thought as a family that was going to look out for him when his career was over with," Snoop said. "And that's what's important, to make sure he gets a degree and gets an education. Football is not going to be there forever, but life is, so you've got to make sure that you prepare for life."

How will Broadus fit in at UCLA. Here's Rivals.com recruiting analyst Adam Gorney's take:

"Broadus is a little bit of an enigma. He has all the physical tools to be a real special wide receiver, and at times at Bishop Gorman, he really did stand out. He's a good route runner, he has good speed and athleticism and if you throw the ball up, he's got very long arms and good hands. But he doesn't deliver all the time. That's the thing he needs to work on is his consistency. He needs to come on the field every time wanting to dominate, and he has the physical tools to do it, it's just sort of a mental thing that he needs to go out there and want to control the game."

Snoop also said he'd get rid of all his USC apparel. He had joked on the ESPN series chronicling Cordell's recruitment that he may still wear some USC drawers from time to time.

"I'm going to back him up 1,000 percent so I'm going to throw my USC drawers away," Snoop said. "I'm going UCLA 100,000 percent."

UCLA DC Jeff Ulbrich reportedly heading to the Atlanta Falcons

While UCLA is gaining some highly-regarded recruits on National Signing Day, it may also be losing its defensive coordinator.

According to Fox Sports, Jeff Ulbrich has been hired by the Atlanta Falcons and will be the team's linebackers coach. A former NFL LB himself, Ulbrich coached with new Falcons head coach Dan Quinn in Seattle before he came to UCLA.

Ulbrich, known for his backwards baseball hat on the sidelines, was UCLA's defensive coordinator for a season after he was the team's linebackers coach for two seasons.

In 2014, UCLA was No. 63 in total defense, giving up just under 400 yards per game. The Bruins allowed 5.17 yards per play and were No. 75 in scoring defense at just over 28 points per game.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, the Bruins had commitments from four four-star defensive recruits and five-star linebacker Keisean Lucier-South. And the total doesn't include four-star Georgia LB Roquan Smith, who committed to UCLA Wednesday morning but apparently hasn't signed his letter of intent.

According to UGASports.com, Smith said he entered as a slight lean to Georgia and chose the Bruins because it felt right at his signing ceremony and that his head was telling him to try some place new. There is no timetable on Smith's final decision.

Wake Forest assistant insults UNC on Twitter, deletes tweet

National Signing Day can certainly bring out those competitive juices in coaches. A tweet sent by Wake Forest tight ends and special teams coach Adam Scheier is a prime example of that.

Scheier fired off this feisty tweet on Wednesday and aimed it squarely at North Carolina, Wake’s in-state and ACC rival.

Scheier, of course, is referring to the academic scandal that has permeated at North Carolina over the past few seasons. Not surprisingly, Scheier’s hot take was deleted pretty quickly after it was sent.

For those keeping score at home, Wake Forest’s 2015 class is ranked 11th in the ACC and 52nd nationally, according to Rivals while North Carolina’s 2015 class is ranked fifth in the ACC and 27th nationally.

BYU coaches write and perform rap songs for each signee (Video)

While most schools have been celebrating their signees with tweets and phone calls, BYU has taken its celebrations just a step further — with custom rap songs.

That’s right, sign with BYU, get your very own rap song.

Running backs coach Mark Atuaia and a couple of the teams GAs have been producing original songs for each signee and putting them up on YouTube.

Shockingly, some of them actually aren’t bad. We’re especially fans of the one for Motekiai Langi, a 410-pound lineman from Tonga.

I guess if you’re trying to set yourself apart on National Signing Day this is definitely one way to do it. Not sure it’s a big selling point on the recruiting trail, but hey, it’s a nice touch.

And we shouldn’t be too surprised. This is the program that once had a lip sync battle that included hits from Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Recruit flips coin to announce he's signing with Texas (Video)

Chris Warren apparently viewed his college choices as a 50/50 proposition and had no overwhelming desire for either option.

The four-star running back from Rockwall, Texas, was down to Washington and Texas for where he'd play football. He said he chose the Longhorns on National Signing Day because of the flip of a coin, which he performed on stage at his signing ceremony.

He said after his ceremony that the coin flip was real.

Warren said the coin flip was a real thing. If it landed tails? "I'd be wearing purple and gold right now."

— Michael Florek (@michaelflorek) February 4, 2015

To help prove it, there was Washington stuff ready if the coin had landed on the other side.

Chris Warren's purple and gold balloons had the coin flip gone the other way. http://ift.tt/1AsJXz9

— Michael Florek (@michaelflorek) February 4, 2015

It's certainly a unique way to pick a school, and if Warren is truly serious about the coin flip deciding his choice, we applaud the authenticity. We're not a fan of prolonged awkward fake drama during signing ceremonies. Be original, be efficient and be authentic. Warren looks like he was all three of those on Wednesday.

Top defensive tackle recruit Terry Beckner Jr. picks Missouri

Defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr., is staying close to home.

The four-star recruit from East St. Louis chose Missouri, spurning Auburn, Ohio State and Florida State. Beckner is considered the nation's fifth-best player at his position.

"My heart told me Missouri," said Beckner who teared up during his announcement. "I looked into my heart and I felt Missouri was the best place for me in the end.”

Beckner is a key addition to a Missouri defensive front that has produced NFL-caliber talent year after year. Beckner's versatility and speed work well with Missouri’s line, which often values speed over bulk. Beckner is 6-foot-4, 293 pounds, but is strong enough to play nose tackle. He also runs 4.89-second 40-yard dash. During his senior season at East St. Louis, Beckner had 116 tackles, three sacks and an interception that he returned for a touchdown.

Beckner said he wasn’t solid on his choice until late in the process and the fact that high school teammate Naterace Strong also was attending Missouri helped in his decision.

"It's fair to say that I went back and forth with it (the decision),” Beckner said. “The other schools gave me a lot to consider. I just feel like I have the best of everything with Missouri."

Richmond is the fourth five-star recruit to sign with Tennessee, joining defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie (No. 6 overall) defensive end Kyle Phillips (No. 32 overall) and former Alabama running back Alvin Kamara, who played one season at Hutchinson Community College after transferring from Alabama.

Top TE recruit Chris Clark chooses UCLA over Michigan

Jim Harbaugh's arrival at Michigan didn't ultimately persuade tight end Chris Clark to choose the Wolverines.

Clark, a native from Avon, Conn., chose UCLA over Michigan.

He's a four-star recruit according to Rivals and the top TE in the country. He told BruinSportsReport.com why he chose UCLA.

"I just felt at home when I went on my visit," Clark said. "Clearly it’s different, I’m an east coast guy but it was pretty easy to get adjusted to what it’s like here in California. The coaching staff is unbelievable. I have an unbelievable relationship with Coach Mora. I haven’t been this close with a coach ever and we’ve only been talking — he started recruiting me earlier this year. It hasn’t been that long of a relationship but we’ve just gotten really close really fast."

Michigan has TE Jake Butt returning, though with the loss of Devin Funchess, Clark could have been a contributor right away had he chosen Michigan.

He wasn't the only top player to choose UCLA Wednesday morning either. Five-star running back Soso Jamabo from Plano, Texas, chose the Bruins. He's a five-star running back and the top player in Texas according to Rivals. He seems excited about his choice.

UCLA simplifies signing day by offering e-signature option for recruits

(Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports) On one day each year, the fax machine lives on.

Despite the countless forms of technology that are at the tips of our fingers on a daily basis, the fax machine still reigns supreme on the first Wednesday of every February in the college football world – National Signing Day.

High school prospects across the country will make their verbal commitments official on Wednesday, and most will do so by sending their National Letter of Intent (NLI) via fax to their future university.

One school is encouraging a better method.

For the second straight year, UCLA is providing its football recruits the option to submit their NLI using Barracuda SignNow, an application that allows users to sign documents via their computer, cell phone or tablet.

Chris Hawkins, GM and Founder of Barracuda SignNow, says the process is simple.

“With Barracuda SignNow the recruits get a unique secure email containing the link to their NLI,” Hawkins told Yahoo Sports. “From there the areas that they need to complete are designated, and they’re able to complete the NLI with signature on their phone, tablet, or laptop. Schools get the documents back instantly with detailed audit logs that track every action including date, timestamps and IP addresses.”

Responses have been positive from both the recruits and the UCLA football staff.

“The football staff at UCLA is enthusiastic about electronic signatures and using technology to the fullest,” Pat Girardi, UCLA Football Director of Player Personel, said in an email to Yahoo Sports.

Girardi says there haven’t been any issues using the technology. In fact, the process is far smoother than the traditional fax.

“The electronic signature option actually provides a much quicker platform to correct mistakes with the signing process,” Girardi said.

Girardi said UCLA is always looking for “a better way” to get the job done. When it came to National Signing Day, adapting to this new technology and offering it to recruits seemed like the natural thing to do.

“It is in UCLA’s DNA to be on the cutting edge of technology, try new things and look for a better way to accomplish our objectives,” Girardi said. “By embracing the electronic signature option for our recruits and their families, we have provided a straightforward and efficient method for them to finalize one of the most important decisions of their lives.”

Hawkins said most recruits who had the option to sign electronically did so. Additionally, Hawkins there were recruits who even “pulled out tablets on their local TV broadcasts” to sign their NLI.

With UCLA in its second year offering this service, Girardi thinks more schools will follow suit.

“As with most strides forward, there are early adopters. And then the rest catch up down the road,” Girardi said.

Hawkins says it’s a “no-brainer” and that other schools throughout the country have reached out Barracuda SignNow about potential signing day partnerships.

“At this point college-aged students have grown up with the internet, they never lived in a world that wasn’t connected,” Hawkins said. “Modern services like Barracuda SignNow provide advantages of speed and security that fax machines can’t offer, and will never run out of ink or get paper jams.”

One-time middle school USC commit David Sills signs with West Virginia

Four-star quarterback David Sills made his letter of intent with West Virginia official on Wednesday.

Mountaineer nation welcome 2015 commitment & early-enrollee David Sills to the football team http://ift.tt/16yQGv5

— Dana Holgorsen (@Holgorsendana) February 4, 2015

Sills is the No. 15 pro-style quarterback in the country according to Rivals, though he's known for more than that. He was the quarterback who committed to USC in 2010 when the Trojans were coached by Lane Kiffin and Kiffin offered him a scholarship. Yes, Sills was a seventh-grader when he made that commitment.

He had a personal coach in middle school and the coach, Steve Clarkson told ESPN in 2010 that "His skill set is off the chart. I've never seen anyone at his age do what he's been able to do."

And yes, Clarkson said Sills was breaking down NFL tape as a kid still more than two years away from being able to drive.

Sills held his commitment until 2014 when he decommitted from USC. He took a visit to Alabama, where Kiffin is now the offensive coordinator, but settled on West Virginia and coach Dana Holgorsen soon after decommitting from USC.

“Everything I looked for in a college … all pointed right back to West Virginia,” Sills said shortly after choosing West Virginia via Delaware Today. “I have two former teammates there—one that I’m very, very close with. The coaches were always straight and upfront with me, and said I could come in as a freshman and compete for the starting job.”

5 Ways to a Get a Guy By Valentine’s Day

Left Shark 'commits' to play at Boise State

Left Shark knows the blue turf at Boise State's stadium is not water, right?

Coach Bryan Harsin posted that the shark, famous for it's uncoordinated dance moves during Katy Perry's halftime performance at Super Bowl XLIX, had committed Tuesday, one day before National Signing Day.

GO BRONCOS! Welcome our biggest catch #LeftShark of 2015! HAHA #EnjoyTheProcess tomorrow is a great day! @katyperry http://ift.tt/16mzrfD

— Coach Bryan Harsin (@bryanharsin) February 4, 2015

No word on Left Shark's Rivals rank, but we're going to guess it's somewhat like a baseball player had has severe water/land performance splits. We're also assuming that since Left Shark is a shark, the NCAA's social media commitment guidelines don't apply to it. Coaches can't mention a recruit by name on Twitter until the letter of intent is officially signed.

There's also no word on if the commitment will change Perry's college football allegiance. She's an Ole Miss fan (one of her managers went there) and was in attendance at the Alabama-Ole Miss game in Oxford in 2014.
